  • I thought I would try something new out... here's a step-by-step breakdown going through a small little training loop near my house. I did my best to talk about what I am looking for, seeing and doing throughout the ride. I hope some people find it interesting or helpful! If you have questions beyond this or want to see more of these kinds of videos let me know!

Solid Gold! You make an excellent instructor! I just learned I need to start my pivot later than I think I should! I have to make some "harder" practice trails like this!
If I could request a future video it would be about how to properly load the flywheel and dump the clutch to get up something big like you pros do all the time. We see them use the technique (Quick high RPM"s and dump the clutch) constantly but I've never seen a good step by step breakdown of it.

Thank you, that's cool to hear that my ramblings work for you! Haha. Yeah I could explore the idea of some more "how-to" style videos with the flywheel loading technique being involved :D

I just recently found your tube channel (solid content in ig too) .. We call this engineering enduro where you plan every step ahead and analyze how it wen't - I'm big fan of this type of riding and breakdowns.
Will be following future videos for any tips to implement in my middle aged hard(ish) riding .. I have one tip for you coming from big heavy adventure bikes when you need to push the bike - in situation where even super gentle revs just don't maintain traction, try to hit full gas with clutch pulled then release both together. Revs going lower and lower create great traction and usually the only method to get out of pot hole with ease. Best traction is when bike comes near to stall but is still gently pulling so you can just let it stall and start again for another go if needed.

Awesome video. Love the full technical breakdown. Man, wouldn't it be nice if GoPro footage showed the true steepness of the terrain? I can tell, because I know how to look for it... but the footage is such a rip off sometimes lol. Nice work!!

Thanks for the walk through Jason! I have a few follow up questions about your video; at 3:26 when you remind to “check the rear wheel” (assuming meaning that tire is in a location for optimal traction upon application of throttle? LOL) are you physically looking down EVERY time in a hare scramble or race environment? This seems quite tedious, but do you do it?
Breathing and resting after the obstacle and after the hill climb seems intuitive but makes more sense after you break it down.

At 7:06, the off camber “S” pivot at the tom of the hill climb looks SUPER technical! I would love to work up to that particular obstacle. There are so many variables in that one obstacle!
At 9:09, I think we’ve (“we” the noobs and entry level gumbies) have all been in the ‘everyone is watching me from the sidelines, people passing, holding people up in the race so THROTTLE over the boulder/roots.’! Then a huge feeling of fatigue 5-7min later.
10:05 a look at obstacles in your line and how they relate to throttle and clutch activity is great insight, again, some seems intuitive, but to some adults like my friends and I who just started riding two years ago, maybe not intuitive!
At 16:50, is that where you intended to land when you chose your line?
At 19:50 you show how you previously explained that you are using the clutch as a “rear brake” with minute manipulation. This is the first time I’ve heard this instead of riders saying that is where a LHRB (Left hand rear brake) would be useful. I like how you use the abilities of the bike instead of bolting on another part.
Your 21:40 “drop in” was super scary looking!
    #rearwheelplacement!

    • @JasonHamborg
      @JasonHamborg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

(3:26) I check my rear wheel a LOT haha, it's less necessary in a hare scramble situation compared to something more technical... but a half-second lookdown saves way more energy than even a single time where you don't and your rear wheel slides out when you dump the clutch.
(9:09) Yup, slow and steady with constant force is way more efficient that trying to spin your way through (when riding OR pushing)
(16:50) Yeah, hard to see but again... just needed to get the rear wheel up above a big nasty root! I was able to do that and then slowly creep it away from the root to safety (so I didn't roll back below it)
(19:50) Yeah, so you can keep your clutch right at the engagement point with a slight amount of throttle and it will prevent the bike from rolling backwards on an incline. Thank you for noticing that!
      (21:40) You are correct! LOL

    • @JasonHamborg

This jetting is probably on the lean side for how warm my bike was getting... typically I would do this loop in about half the time without all thr starting and stopping to talk... thats my guess.
