There's quite some misinformation here. They are delivered in icepacks, not warm conditions (as mentioned in a comment below). Also, Jarrow does not differentiate itself much from let's say Renew Life. So yes, do your own research. Don't just trust a random youtuber with 1M subscribers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought refrigeration slows the bacteria's metabolism down to increase the product's shelf life. At 97°F where they function normally they would probably reproduce like crazy and then die (because they eat all their food or drown in their own waste products).

I work in the Probiotic R&D industry. Interesting to see this take. From my desk microencapsulation is just one of many technologies that has been pioneered to help gastric survival, and it may not be the best one.. though it does increase survival in acid/bile challenge tests. I'm curious what made Cassandra so convinced that this was the only way to go? Most clinical trials haven't used microencapsulation, and also there are actually several different types of microencapsulation. different biopolymers are used in various microencapsulations, sometimes with milk proteins like casein, others with alginate from seaweed. Also the difference between refrigerated and non-refrigerated products comes down to the packaging mostly. It's all about keeping the bacteria in a dormant state by keeping them dry and/or cold. You can make the exact same formula shelf stable by putting the capsules in a hyper-desiccant bottle or a blister tray. Most vendors do not ship their products cold to the retail stores by the way, but some do.

      @brucetopping248 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

@@jermaineholmes3531 So I'll say right off the bat that there are many products that will likely help you. I work for a brand called Probulin and I've fallen in love with their technology, I do think it is superior to typical microencapsulations or enteric coatings, (but I also believe many microencapsulated products also help people.) I used to work for a different large brand, called Garden of LIfe and I think their products are of good quality as well) If it were me, I'd try the "Colon Support" formula from Probulin, I think it is among the best. But whatever brand, I would look for a formula that emphasizes the bifido genus more than the lacto genus. The scientific literature paints a compelling picture that bifido strains are typically more helpful for IBS symptoms compared to high-lacto formulas. (and usually most formulas lacto strains dominate) but any good "colon" type of blend usually emphasizes bifido strains. I also like having even small amounts of prebiotic fibers in the formula such as FOS, inulin, XOS, (these refer to different types of sugars that specifically feed the bacteria) so I'd look for that. Cell count should be over 10 billion CFU, but it seems like the industry has gone wild with incredibly high cell counts and to me it's probably more marketing than science as it does seem like diminishing returns where having ten times more cells often does not produce any better response in the trials.

    L. acidophilus effectively helps reduce the symptoms of constipation and diarrhea.
    L. rhamnosus can work to combat eczema (atopic dermatitis)
    L. plantarum demonstrates its effectiveness at preventing pathogenic bacterial adhesion by both competitive exclusion and the release of anti-bacterial factors called bacteriocins.
Lactobacillus casei may help improve cognitive function by easing symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndromeoften accompanied by anxiety. L.casei reportedly quickens the rate of recovery for those suffering from pneumococcal pneumonia by using various cytokines. The cytokines play a role in elevating the immune response.
Bifidobacterium churn sugars into lactic acid. B. longum helps to alleviate constipation and stress. It is best to take this strain of probiotic with milk or yogurt.
    B. bifidum plays a vital role in helping the innate immune system respond to an infection. fighting off pathogens
    B. lactis helps the immune system by stimulating the production of antibodies.
Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A close relative, Saccharomyces boulardii, is a particularly effective probiotic yeast when it comes to decreasing intestinal stress, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Because S. boulardii is a probiotic yeast, it assists the body in fighting off diarrhea caused by antibiotics, since it is unaffected by antibiotics. Further, it is best known for preventing or treating diarrhea in adults and children.

The most important thing to look for in a quality probiotic are strains that have been tested to survive the digestive system, which means they need to survive outside the refrigerator as well. There is also a lot of different research coming out about Enteric Coating and how it might not be so good. I used to work at Whole Foods, so I know that probiotics are delivered in a container with ice packs unless they are shelf stable. WholeFoods keeps all their probiotics in the fridge, whether they are shelf stable or not just to keep it all together for easy shopping.

If you found this video helpful, you may also want to know that there are advantages and disadvantages to taking soil-based probiotics. For example, soil-based probiotics are more spore-forming. The spore creates a protective barrier so that the microorganisms are more likely to travel through the stomach without being destroyed by stomach acid. So they are more likely to attach in the gut, and be effective. On the other hand, this can be a negative if the microorganism causes an infection, because it is then more resistant to an antibiotic that may be needed to treat the infection!

They are refrigerated to keep the probiotics in a dormant state, otherwise they will get activated by heat and eat up all the prebiotic(food for probiotic) in the capsule, then starve and die off. You are suppose to keep them in your refrigerator at home. Now some brands also have shelf stable products which does not require refrigeration. Some probiotics specialists debate the efficacy of the shelf stable ones.

Love this video, but I think they are kept in fridges to keep the bacteria “asleep”. Heat will make them grow. (This is why you can put agar plates with bacterial colonies in the fridge for awhile and keep them before growing them out again). There are also refrigerated trucks out there for transport, so hopefully they use them!
Definitely agree that most people don’t need them. Unless you wiped out your gut bacteria with antibiotics (which in this case, probiotics would be good or the much researched “fecal capsule”), your intestines is already colonized by a certain set of bacteria. Probiotics will have to compete with bacteria that have already colonized and that is hard for new bacteria coming in to do. (Perhaps prebiotics would be more useful in this case? i.e. food for already currently existing bacteria)

I just bought the Bio K at wholefoods. 1 shot was over $5. I just finished 2 miserable weeks of antibiotics from a stomach bacteria(h pylori). I been eating extremely clean. Drinking cranberry juice, homemade cabbage juice. Sourcraut, Kiefer, plenty of fruits and vegetables. I never tried probiotics shots until now. Hopefully they help. Yogurt is refrigerated and we still get the beneficial bacteria when we consume it right?

try nancy's brand yogurt and cottage cheese. Its great for snacking and have a ton of probiotics. Kimchi is also a fantastic source of probiotics and can be a nice side to any Asian-style dish. I have found that Braggs brand apple cider vinegar makes fantastic apple cider vinegar lemon aid, which is a good prebiotic. All these can be found at Whole foods or your local food co-op.

Are you a nutritionist to be talking about probiotics? Majority of people suffer with over growth of bad bacteria, IBS, IBD. Adding prebiotics like FOS, GOS or Maltodextrin (which are all isolated from their natural environment) is a big no no! You get most of your prebiotics from your diet by eating different coloured fruit and veg that provide you with different type of fibre which is food for your gut bacteria. Also important to have carbohydrates and resistant starch. Consuming probiotics on regular bases in high doses can cause SIBO. Plus how do the bacteria in fermented food survive stomach acid?

I stopped taking mine, used to take the Garden of Life ones I see in the background there. I noticed after years of taking it that it was actually making my stomach WORSE. For years it helped me and without it my IBS was out of control. I'm proud that my gut microbiome is FINALLY in balance after years of destruction from antibiotics. My vegan diet is full of plenty of veggies that helped support the good bacteria and help them thrive.
Also, they are refrigerated because the bacteria are freeze dried and they only wake up when the temperature (our natural body heat) is warm enough. I used to work in WFM and asked the GOL representatives ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS. They account for die off and guarantee that most bacteria will survive until the colon. BUT I am thankful I don't need them anymore because they are expensive and most are a huge scam

I have been told a few times by different people that when buying probiotics, they should be out of a fridge rather than on the Shelf. I tell you something that's really good and natural that I use. You probably already know this. Refrigerated sauerkraut. Helps me. I just get it at one of the health food grocers. Pretty sure sauerkraut in a can does not have any probiotics. I think that's mostly just made for people that eat hot dogs or whatever. See what you were doing is something that I have never heard of before. I don't go around taking surveys but I haven't ever been told to take probiotics for a long time. I had always been told that when we take antibiotics, it takes about one year to build the floor back up within the gut. So I was also told that you just take probiotics to work as a bridge between the ending of the antibiotics and a year when the floor has built up again. I've even heard that if a person takes probiotics, it can actually do more harm than good if its long-term. Not saying that with the case review but obvious never heard of anyone taking it long-term like a multivitamin or something. From what you said, sounds like you were having to take probiotics so long because you were getting prescribed antibiotics more than once a year for a while. What are the symptoms of IBS? My stomach used to give me a lot of problem before I started taking digestive enzymes and eating sauerkraut on the side of practically every meal

If you found this informative, you may also want to know that when buying a probiotic, it's important to look for probiotics that have genus, species, and strain on the bottle. This is important because two different strains can provide two different health benefits! So how do you know that you're taking the probiotic most applicable to your personal health if you don't have all of the information?!

Micro encapsulation is not necessary if probiotics are encapsulated into capsules. If you look for probiotics powder then yes they either need to be micro-encapsulated OR they can just be very resistant strains like spores. Bottom line, microencapsulation is not mandatory.

    • @raizacalderon4327

Yes, this one is a hard one to figure out. The one she grabbed that she likes is the Ultra Jarro-Dophilus Refrigerated Probiotic - 10 Billion CFUs. It does say in the front of the box "Acid Resistant" and "Delayed Release Capsule". In the back, it says "Delayed Release Capsule
: For protection against stomach acid, DRcaps™ (delayed release capsules) are used instead of regular vegetarian capsules." THe DRCaps™ capsule consists of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose. Still don't know if that is the ingredient we should be looking for because I haven't seen a probiotic directly say it is microencapsulated. Got a few more questions? Like are we to assume that if it is is vegetarian capsule that it is not microencapsulated?

Cassandra, could probiotics help this condition... I have flaking skin on my ankles and parts of my feet and legs, occasional swelling of the feet and ankles which require me to wear compression socks during the day to stop the swelling. I had an ultra sound done on my legs and there was nothing wrong. The doctor wanted to do an upper ultra sound, but said that if it's a circulation problem related to the upper body, that would probably require surgery that I don't want to go through. I have a bladder that no longer functions, so I had to have a stoma installed at Cleveland Cllinic. Maybe this is all related?
If you think there's a particular probiotic that can help me, please let me know. Thanks.

I’m not quite sold on the refrigeration idea. I always thought it was to prolong shelf life. What’s the point of refrigerating our produce our condiments etc if it’s going in our body that has high temp conditions? It’s to preserve the life of those products so that when we finally eat them we will be able to get the nutrients that we would not have gotten if the products were not in the fridge.
