Do Probiotics Really Work?

  • Well - to be frank, our poop and all the bugs that live in there are the great new frontier in medicine. Who knew!? The health of the 100 trillion bugs in your gut (which outnumber you 10 to 1) is one of the biggest things that impacts your health. Is it as simple as just taking a few probiotics or eating some yogurt? Not really - we have to learn how to tend the gut flora of our inner gardens by being selective of what we eat and how we live; feeding the good bugs and avoiding gut-busting drugs and habits- like eating too much sugar and starch, or consuming too much alcohol, or not managing our stress (yes, your gut bacteria are eavesdropping on your thoughts).

Thanks Mark for this wonderful and informative speech!
I did laboratory and field research on Probiotics in 1998, for the first time. I should say Probiotics have been there for thousands of years there in Asia and ME region. The apparent health and promotional effects of Yogurt and fermented milk would be the long healthy life of those seniors that take these magic super foods on a regular basis. Media for some reasons do not show that but people who live longer than 120 are very considerable in that part of the planet....

Probiotics do work - and quite effectively. Especially when they are consumed in the form of foods containing them naturally - like fermented vegetables. I started experiencing symptoms of mild Crohn's (most likely Crohn's), and within a day of eating sauerkraut, I noticed the systems lessening. Almost a month later, and most of my symptoms are gone...although, I also immediately stopped eating dairy and gluten...
I also noticed significant reductions in inflammation in other parts of my body - like my eyes (which were often inflamed - red blood vessels in the white's of my eyes for no apparent reason). My chronic back aches and pains (probably from AS) was also significantly reduced. I am not out of the woods yet, but I am well on my way...

I think that’s wonderful and yes sauerkraut that’s what I’m taking. I believe it’s helping you tremendously too. I think you’re on the right track for permitted food like sauerkraut and kimchi specially, sauerkraut is number one.

If you liked this video, you may also want to know that it's hard to compare probiotics between soil-based probiotics and non soil-based probiotics. The more important factor to look for is the genus, species, and strain listed on the bottle. Some strains are good for certain issues, and other strains are helpful for other issues! So it depends on your individual health needs! The power of personalized nutrition!

After I turned 50, I noticed severely reduced in my gut function which leads me to obesity, constipation then leads to minor depression since I really that I am getting older which heavier weight brings joint pain etc. Perhaps working remotely from home has some contribution to my weight gain since I was eating more than I was working outside and less physical exercise or movement. I started eating yogurt that has live probiotics which is from Activia by Danone. When I felt I need more support on my constipation, then I take Costco brand probiotics capsule. After I changed my diet which is cutting down my food consumption and increase physical movement. I was able to drop my weight little over 15 pounds in about 6 weeks. I feel better than before and I intend to continue until I reach my normal range in BMI. Thank you for your informative health information and guidance.

If you liked this video, you may also be interested to know that there are advantages and disadvantages to taking soil-based probiotics. For example, soil-based probiotics are more spore-forming. The spore creates a protective barrier so that the microorganisms are more likely to travel through the stomach without being destroyed by stomach acid. So they are more likely to attach in the gut, and be effective. On the other hand, this can be a negative if the microorganism causes an infection, because it is then more resistant to an antibiotic that may be needed to treat the infection!

Seven months ago, I started eating a primal organic diet, and started a new method of taking probiotics. Instead of taking them as capsules, I mix them with bananas, nuts and berries in a bowl. I've had amazing results. A drop in body fat and no reduction in muscle mass every month.

Thanks Mark, great content. And it clarifies a mystery I've had. I'm on a wholefood organic zero packaging (everything made from scratch) pegan diet in the UK (Scotland, where sun exposure ican be limited unless you look for it). Following a stressful season a few years ago, I made different health choice mistakes (now identified and back on track) and started developping odd symptoms. Diagnosed last winter with M.S. after an acute flare-up. I don't know if it's M.S. or the disease modifying treatment (course of steroids initially, and ocrelus since) but the gut has been misbehaving, mildly. Could be the tube of steroids I get with every course of treatment! Perhaps. I'm currently working on the probiotic intake. Got a collection of jars bubbling away in the cupboard. Now need to integrate them into my life and observe the results.

It was the age back then when we grew all our food : from vegetables, to meet, eggs, fish from the nearby river, fruits. Mushrooms the forest. Nothing spoiled.

I didn't notice any change when I took probiotics. However, I noticed changes when I started eating fermented foods and drinking fermented drinks. I drink Kefir water daily. What I noticed particularly with it was when I would go out for a big meal, I'd come home feeling stuffed. But, after drinking some kefir water after about 20--30 mins, I'd notice that stuffed feeling was gone. I don't go to bed feeling stuffed anymore. I decided to try fermented foods. Saur kraut is great and an easy one to start with. What I've noticed is on the weeks when I'm still waiting on the foods to finish fermenting and I'm out of any that are ready to eat, on these weeks, I don't feel as good as normally do. I simply notice a change.

I’ve had a major problem with my gut now for about 6 years. Started with getting sick more often, then alopecia, then major bloating and acid reflux. I had to drastically change my diet and decided to take a high grade probiotic supplement. I did that a few times over the past couple of years, mostly after a dose of antibiotics. Anyway, mixed results. I definitely get sick less and feel much better but sometimes the same symptoms come and go. The probiotics seem to work though. However, i just finished a two month dose of probiotics about a month ago. I’ve had diarrhea and stomach bloating ever since. It could have been my diet that messed things up. I wasn’t nearly as strict as i should probably have been. I’m considering taking the probiotics again but I’m concerned there’s a negative effect on the body after going off them. Could this be true? I just read an article on the BBC that talked about probiotics and how they were found to hinder the gut healing process significantly. It was a 2019 article.

dont bother with them, bunch of hypeola that Health Supplement Manufacturers want you to believe in! I took some for 2 months and got quite sick had extreme nausea and insomnia most days for those 2 months and even taking them with food didnt get rid of it so called herx reactions they talk about only suppose to last 2 to 7 days I had to take Buffered Vitamin C to alkalise my body again and only now Im starting to feel better they inflamed my lungs as well, but theres recent studies showing they can be quite harmful and some peoples body rejects the good bacteria and can even take 5 months for your normal gut flora to come back unless given a antiobiotic which gets it back in just a matter of days, The problem also is most manufacturers add crapola to them like Prebiotics like Inulin/Chicory Root which some people can be allergic to and also different Maltodextrins and Maltodextrin is coming under fire more recently for feeding bad bacteria (SIBO) but also spikes your insulin levels I try to avoid all foods with this! really defeats the purpose of taking 1 in the first place, also certain strains can make Histamine Intolerance worse and also create D-Lactic Acidosis which is never a fun thing to have and can also cause Gene Transfer and overstimulate your immune system... Zinc, Vitamin C and Magnesium works lot better for me and they are safer things to cure Leaky Gut issues/Histamine issues as they Stabalise Mast Cells etc as we,ll as boosting your immune system without overstimulating it... Zinc will also take care of GERD and SIBO. Zinc's responsible for activity of over 300 enyzmes in your body while Magnesium is also responsible for 300....

I agree I have an immune system problem and I’m sure I have leaky gut from celiac and I got Addison’s disease which is horrible and I did fasting for three days to clean out my gut and now I’m going to be eating, sauerkraut and kimchi for some good natural probiotics

Can excess probiotic over the years build up push some microbes out of bowel to places where the should not be? Can excess get eliminated by other strains or moves out to other places (in a leaky gut scenario)? Any research done on that yet?

You never mentioned dairy kefir which I make and eat every day. What's your opinion of kefir - I often use goat milk too....

The probiotic supplement is helping me keep track of how many days I've quit drinking

I quit drinking almost 12 months ago and started taking Align probiotics today. Years of alcohol abuse i believe has screwed up my gut. I always feel extremely fatigued, extreme constipation, and just other small things. I do feel much better since I don’t drink anymore but I believe it could be MUCH better if my gut wasnt so screwed up from alcohol. Which probiotics were you take? You feel like they helped? Also, I truly hope you are still NOT drinking. Alcohol is horrible for the body. I cant believe i damaged my body that much for so many years with stupid alcohol

I started making my own kefir with real kefir grains. It stopped the gassiness.

I have two questions. Do the bacteria in the probiotics survive the acid in the stomach? If most fermented foods are pasteurized killing all live bacteria, are they being eaten only as a prebiotic?

If you liked this video, you may also be interested to know that probiotics are microorganisms that are shown to provide a health benefit to the host, when provided in adequate amounts. So dosage is important!
