    I always liked that Kat wasn't 'cold and uninterested' towards dating not because that trope of not wanting to be a popular girl or some school power struggle like in most other teen movies; its because something traumatic happened to her. So she put up walls and with those walls protected her sister from the same fate.

    • @Aelffwynn
      @Aelffwynn ปีที่แล้ว +257

      I think it also shows that deep down, her father's concerns mean something to her. He takes it to a silly level because it's a comedy, but he has a point that most kids aren't prepared for the consequences if BC/condoms fail. That, combined with Joey 🤢, led her to the conclusion that it's not worth the risk.
      (Don't get me wrong, I'm all for teens having access to whatever sexual health resources they need. But there are so many reasons why having sex that can lead to pregnancy is just not worth it for underage girls.)

    • @maddiemcnugget1076
      @maddiemcnugget1076 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Yeah and while it feels a little cliche or predictable, I know the other trope you bring up is the "asexual" trope (I put asexual in quotes because most asexual people aren't like that, but it's how they are portrayed in the media) of "I don't want to focus on dating. I want to focus on my grades/science/more important things" is also cliche but worse because it's misinformation. At least with someone withholding from dating because of a bad initial relationship is something realistic.

    If I had a nickel for every time that Heath Ledger had to publicly embarrass himself for the love of a woman in a movie, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

    • @AverageWagie

      In a Rolling Stone interview, Heath implied he thought this movie was trash but it was what the American audience liked so when he was starting he had to take these kind of roles to move up in his career. He compared romcoms to cocacola which is unhealthy and tastes like crap but everyone gobbles loves it. He sounded relieved when he got his role in Four Feathers which was more like the type of projects he would like to work in.

    I cringe as well at those 'public displays of affection' in movies, and usually really hate it, especially between people who don't know each other well. However, this one never really did secondhand embarrass me, and I think it's because, similar to a comment I saw on a different video, he's not really declaring his love, he's making a public fool of himself. He's showing to her he doesn't mind being seen as silly to let her know he likes her, and is willing to put the work in for that.
    It shows in the scene, most of these scenes are very serious and 'romantic', and in this movie he's clearly aware it's kind of silly what he's doing.
    But that's just my take, I totally understand when something like that makes you cringe.

    • @ronniejc
      @ronniejc ปีที่แล้ว +281

      Yeah I also saw it like this. It's not supposed to be romantic but funny, and it was an apology more than a romantic scene. Also, he did something Kat would like that is showing how he doesn't care how other people are seeing him.

    • @shotinsarajevo
      @shotinsarajevo ปีที่แล้ว +190

      Yep, that's exactly what Cameron tells him to do, "sacrifice yourself on the altar of dignity and even the score". Kat put herself out there and got humiliated, and Patrick had to do the same.

      @mau.04_ ปีที่แล้ว +51

      omg yeah, like i love it here bc it's the literal point, to prove he can do the cringiest think and won't be embarrassed as long as she can see how much he wants her attention and how far he's willing to do

    • @AverageWagie
      @AverageWagie ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Those big shows in affection in movies are extremely cringe because that shit doesn't work in real life. If you watch one of those "public proposals" youtube compilations, they often end with the woman walking away in embarassment without giving an answer or they awkwardly tell the guy "can we talk about this in private for a minute?"

    • @rowanjoy419
      @rowanjoy419 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Actually, the reason why people hate it, is because usually is when 2 people don't know each other or they are just friends and the guy does not want to be rejected so ask the girl out in public, but what Patrick did was different, he ask her to go out with him normally but she said no, so he decided to just sing a song to her, he did not ask her anything, did not put her in a position to say yes in front of everyone, he just sing to her like whatever, and he actually got detention.

    I love this analysis! One thing I always thought is that Bianca is actually very smart. Both Stratford sisters are actually whip smart but I think Bianca chose to hide that part of her due to popularity (the trope that you're too cool for school/trying hard is for nerds etc.) It's the second library scene with Cameron when she gets mad he hasn't asked her out. Bianca knows more French (not hard to do compared to Cameron ha) but spits it out like it's nothing. Needing a tutor might not actually be necessary or maybe her father feels her grades aren't high enough because she's too focused on popularity and not school - we'll never know. But for as vapid as she comes off, I always assumed Bianca is just as smart as her sister.

    No hate towards masculine women (all women are cool just the way they are) but I really appreciate how the movie doesn't demonize her hyper-fem style like a lot of other teen shows do.

    This movie is great. Not only it tackles the women's side but the men's side too, as Cameron and Patrick are opposites and both learn what the other lacks.
    Cameron learns to be more confident and self assertive while Patrick learns to be more vulnerable and emotional, but this happens in a subtle manner that perhaps a lot of people don't notice, especially since the focus are Bianca and Kat.

    Underlying Kat's personality is a fear of rejection informed by her experiences. It's not talked about much but i think their mum leaving had a huge affect on the girls and their family dynamic because Kat was coming of age and thrust into these terrible experiences with boys while having no guidance and no adults or older people in her life who could understand.
    With her mum rejecting her, then Joey, it makes sense that she's so hurt when Patrick doesn't kiss her after the party.

    13:41 something that always frustrated me with her English teacher though is that he never brings up classism or racism to encourage other students, especially the black students, to also fight against discrimination that they face or to look into the lack of racial diversity in their syllabus. He only ever uses it as a "gotcha" moment to shut Kat up as a girl speaking out about misogyny.

    I never thought the singing scene was embarrassing. Patrick had a good singing voice, and he really doesn't care what most people think about him anyway.
    The saddest scenes in the film (in no particular order) are:
    Kat's poem recital.
    Bianca on the tire swing.
    Cameron when Bianca walks right past him with Joey.
    Kat confronting Patrick outside of the prom.

    8:58, An unfortunate aspect of them just speeding past this bit of drama is how much Cameron mainly likes Bianca because she's attractive until finally opens up to her (and to himself, you could say) her negative qualities, and they then end up together.
    Had the argument been more of a back and forth, her calling out his shallowness being just like hers despite him not being a truly terrible person like Joey, and him having to acknowledge he did ignore those bad qualities she has mainly because he got to spend time with someone he found attractive (a relatable motive, but not a justifiable one for ignoring the red flags she wasn't interested in him or a good person to be in a relationship with) and the argument could have ended with him agreeing they should just stay away from each other because of how tainted their relationship.
    But if the movie were to end on a romantic note, they could meet up and propose a fresh start and endeavor to actually learn something personal about the other, build a relationship based on mutual understanding than one of base attraction.
    13:30, On the other hand, props to the movie for calling out the disparity between social groups in regards to countercultural movements, but more importantly, that the character representing liberation from societal norms can still be wrong about things and has room to grow, which is often not the case in mainstream media products involving social justice themes, in which the same kinds of characters can be treated as persistently flawless and correct, even when they are actually not, and in the process lack nuance or anything else to make them memorable besides them being lesser versions of actually well-written characters with social justice themes. Basically, it's a great idea to explore, that being social justice doesn't automatically make someone a good or wise person, but the courage and humility to acknowledge negative experiences along with the possibility for good ones is a step towards being a good person.

    I feel you so much about the singing scene! I think it's so embarrassing because it SHOULD be embarrasing, given how they establish the world and characters. It's entirely diegetic while no one else is singing or sings in the movie. It also feels a bit too over the top and unrealistic for the characters, given how they previously express embarassment or regret towards other public acts. The characters are socially aware enough to know what the status quo is (whether they go with it or not), so the fact everyone in the scene has a positive reaction to the singing feels too far out of the expected range of behaviours of most present, especially Kat. Whereas with HSM, there are multiple characters who sing both diegetically and non-diegetically and it's frequently reinforced as expected, natural and accepted.

  • @amapola9202
    @amapola9202 ปีที่แล้ว +213

    Something that has always bugged me about the cringy singing scene is that this stupid public display of “affection” seems like the opposite to what Kat would find endearing/romantic. It feels like something that someone like Bianca would find romantic, but Kat seems like she would be able to see through the performativity and shallowness of the act. They don’t really know each other well at that point either so it comes across as a bit like he’s mocking her imo, or maybe I’m projecting because that’s what I would think if I guy I barely knew asked me to go out with him in this way. In any case it just seems like there’s such a disconnect between who Kat is and her finding this attractive or charming.

    • @Mrawgan25
      @Mrawgan25 ปีที่แล้ว +279

      A big part of it is that he was meant to embarrass himself to even the playing field. So it wasn’t necessarily for pure romance, but to even the scales after she put herself out there and he rejected her. He had to do something big to show he was willing to embarrass himself for her.

      @yayagldz ปีที่แล้ว +81

      That's bc that's not what it's supposed to be. If you watch the scene, you'll notice that Patrick doesn't take it seriously - it's not a public, ultraromantic gesture but a guy making a fool of himself to prove to a girl he cares more about her than what people think or how they see him (a quality that Kat explicitly admires). No one even knows he's singing to Kat!

    I agree with you - this movie is very underrated and not just a love story. I think that stands for a lot of Shakespeare's works too though, in the sense that the love stories aren't just love stories. Romeo & Juliet is really a story about tradition, legacy, and rivalries more so than it is about love. In my opinion at least. I also watched this movie for years not realizing that Cameron was played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt lol. Today wasn't the day of realization, but I'm 27 and it was only a few years ago, so...

    There was a commenter that talked about why they didn’t find the bleacher scene cringe and I agree. I actually had more embarrassment when she cried in class 😅 I think vulnerability should only be shared w/those that genuinely care for you. So crying in front of essentially strangers makes me veeeeeery uncomfy 💀 just me airing out my issues w/displays of “negative” emotion in public, BUT great analysis vid! There was more I got from Bianca my last rewatch, about two hours ago, and hearing more from you makes so much sense and I understand her more. I never really understood why Bianca wants to go to Prom cause even though she kissed Cameron she still just kinda seemed done with boys in a way but it makes more sense now with just having more autonomy and being able to make her own decisions in the little ways she can. Love this movie and the humor is on point.
    On a side note I also sometimes get second hand embarrassment in shows but only from drunk kid that doesn’t drink and admits embarrassing stuff, like in Everything Sucks or S3 or 2 of Sex Education.
