    In my opinion this is quite possibly the best video you’ve made. Given the rarity of Tundra redesigns, many people including myself were eagerly awaiting the 2021 model. All points you made were spot on, especially the ones identifying real truck deficiencies that the Toyota possesses.
    I don’t know how other folks feel and it matters not but I sort of wish Toyota would have updated the interior technology within the old tundra and simply installed the new 10 speed automatic transmission to the old 5.7 L V8. In so doing, they could of reduced the rear axle ratio down to something more reasonable that I bet would of yielded very similar gas mileage without the overall complexity of the twin turbo V6.

    • @MeliorIlle
      @MeliorIlle ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If ford can get 17 city 24 highway on their V8 Toyota can too.

    • @MrChadx1
      @MrChadx1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very much agree that it would have been nice to keep the V8. I have a 2013 with the 4.6L V8 and already get 19 - 20mph at 75mph on long trips. If that engine was paired with a 10 speed, it would be even better.
      I'll note that the push for small displacement turbos is more than just for mpg ratings. It's mainly driven by emissions and making the V8s meet emissions is getting tougher, more expensive and making the V8s less reliable (cylinder deactivation, complicated valve trains, etc.) and it's hard for them to justify spending money to research and modify V8 engines to meet emissions when only a few models can use those engines.
      The turbo V6 can be used and share parts across more models than the V8 engines and that helps their bottom line.
      I don't necessary like it, but understand it. I usually keep my pickups 10 years, which is coming up for my 2013 Tundra, but perhaps I'll change my mind and keep this one 15 or 20 years. I'll see what pickups are out there in a year or two and decide then.

      After my last 2 Gm disappointments(I have loved and driven GM trucks for 22 years!) Id steer clear of a GM if you're looking for a long-term truck. This guy can afford a new one every year because it's wrapped into his business costs. Gm still has the lifter issue (that will cost you 5k when it happens) 16 years later and has no fix except it to fail out of warranty so they can take more of your money. Gm transmissions are also still terrible. Ask me how I know. I had one of each in the last 10 years with 2 different GMs. Both out of warranty at just over 100k miles with perfect maintenance. I bought a Tundra in 2019 and its had 0, count them, 0!!! issues towing 6 days a week for almost 50k miles. I'm not sure I can go back to having a truck in the shop every couple of months again. Gm has a long way to go to gaining my trust again. The 3.0l duramax might be ok? but any gas truck engine gets a big fat no

    Tim. You are right on point. I WANTED a Tundra. I waited an extra two years to see what the new Tundra was going to do. I was able to swallow the design. But when the fuel economy came back to be on par with the existing F-150 and the Tundra didn't push any envelopes except the cooler button for the tailgate, I looked elsewhere. I really appreciate the Toyota design engineer Mike Sweers and his honest candor in interviews at the Tundra releases, but the one item he mentioned that I shook my head in disbelief was that: "their focus groups complained about fuel economy but Toyota showed it didn't change buying decisions." Next time you talk to the Toyota Team, tell them to get a new focus group. I put in an order on a late '22 1500 Sierra Duramax (LM2) AT4 and have enjoyed my upper 20's to low 30's fuel economy on the highway. I look forward to hearing what you find with the LZ0.

    I really like your channel. Unfortunately, you’re in for an experience with the GM. My last two trucks were a 3500 HD Sierra (single rear wheels) Denali and a Silverado 1500 with the diesel. The 3500 HD was an okay vehicle. Uncomfortable, but I needed it for towing. Unreliable because the injectors had to be replaced after 7000 miles. And again after 13,000 miles.
    My towing requirements changed and I got the Silverado 1500 diesel. Great mpg’s. But constant electrical gremlins from day 1. Push button start failed after a week. HVAC controls died after 3 months. Windshield wiper motor died after 6 months. Then on month 8 I had a loss of power issue while driving down the road. Limp mode. Was told I needed a new engine. Truck sat for 3 months waiting for an engine. I sold it and bought a 2023 Tundra last week. I love the Tundra. I don’t have the window trim gap. It drives down the road better than the Chevy. I’ll take the Toyota over the GM products any day. I had a 2018 Tundra and wish I’d never sold it.

    Excellent video, Been a 2022 Tundra owner since May and you are spot on about everything. The only thing that you missed is that the factory spray on bedliner is about as durable as tissue paper. I'll be keeping mine since none of these are deal breakers for me but I will be adding/changing things as they come to market to make up for the deficiencies. Hopefully Toyota is watching and makes some changes in an early refresh. I love that you called out the Hybrid as a "Diesel Replacement" that's put it in a half ton truck that is not a "HD truck replacement". The regular twin turbo has plenty of power to haul or tow up to the 1/2 ton capacities. For a half ton the hybrid should be getting you more mileage and features, it does not need the torque. Either that or make a heavy half to make use of it. Thanks for your truthful and straightforward commentary.

    I couldn't have said it better myself. I have ONLY had Toyota trucks for the past 35+ years. I started with a 1985 Toyota Extra Cab SR5 and never looked back. I currently own a 2007 Tundra Crewmax that was one of the first Gen 2 off the line in Indiana. It has been flawless for a first year model.
    I was all set to buy the gen 3. I followed and read many articles over the years about the "new refresh". In summary, I was shocked by the launch and what I saw. I really tried hard to like it and even tried to convince myself.
    Long story short, I ordered a 2023 GMC Sierra AT4 with the Duramax. I kind of feel like I have to go to confession and talk to my priest for what I have done.
    I am sure that Toyota will have to do a redesign but I do not see that happening any time in the next 5 years.
    I have photos of the new Tundra at the dealership, Platinum, TRD Pro and it is really sad to see how poor the fit and finish really is. My 2007 is put together with tighter tolerances than the 2022 I drove.

I respect your opinions and agree with some, like some people with the horrible mpg. I've noticed that if I start my truck with the keyfob instead of remote start and let it run for a let's say 5-10 minutes, the computer takes that and computes that into your mpg. So the display will tell you you're getting 11-15 mpg on the highway but look at your real time guage beside that number and you'll see your true mpg. I get 21-23 on highway consistently with the trd air filters. Hope that's the case with a lot of those complaints. Currently have a 22 F150 that I will be keeping for as long as I can. XLT with the 3.5 and max tow. I get 24mpg on the highway and 21 in town. Definitely takes a hit while towing, but don't know of any vehicle that doesn't. Only regret with the F150 is I didn't get the Powerboost, but we had to replace the totaled truck and inventory was non existent. The Silverado is a nice truck, well built and I actually really like the look of it. But the 19 I had I couldn't get comfortable on long drives. The dead petal was an issue for me, my left leg would go numb. Other than that, it was a fine truck. The Ram is a good truck. The previous model Tundra was a fantastic truck but boy was it thirsty. This new Tundra, though, I just can't behind. Not only is it ugly, but the reported fuel economy, issues with the infotainment and consistent QA issues make it DOA for me. I used to love Toyota, but they're not the company they once were.

Long story short I am very close to jumping back into a GM truck as soon as it comes in and I have a brand new appreciation for all of the little things I took for granted previously. This is a fantastic video and completely agree with everything you said. Toyota is a fantastic truck just not for me. As an enthusiast, I need to love what I own and have that emotional connection. Just don’t “love” this new Tundra.

Quiet and solid drive feel on highway. Better fit and finish (It’s true). Better turning radius and easier to park. Shorter front end so not nearly as much good glare, rugged appearance with 2 in lift and all terrain tires from factory. Easier bed acces with bumper steps. STEEL BUMPERS. auto 4x4. @@Salvitrojan7 Yeah the air vents blow way better in the Silverado. The seating position is better. Operation of climate control system is easy with hard buttons. The heated steering wheel button is ON THE STEERING WHEEL. Has tow hooks. 2nd row has an almost flat floor. You have the multiflex or multi pro tailgate option. The window seals seat with no gap or popping out. The center armrest console don’t squeak every time you put your arm on it. The fuel fill is cap less. There’s no warped trim pieces or trim pieces popping off. Infotainment system easy to navigate. There is storage on under sides of center console that convenient. The front windshield is larger (taller) providing better visibility. The cup holders don’t have a death grip on beverages making them easier to use and clean. WOW !! I think this was your best video. I think you fully understand what the average truck owner likes, and how they use their vehicles. You just let it loose, and you hit the mark with an outstanding analysis. I own a older Chevy truck and was planning to buy a new "Class Leading" 2022 Tundra. What we learned was that there was nothing "Class Leading". It's exactly as you stated, yeah it will probably be reliable but that's it. I didn't buy. I began looking at the F150 but dealers were selling above MSRP. I decided to wait. I'm not a diesel guy. I love the features with the Chevy, and we thought out design, but wish they had a twin turbo larger than the 2.7. Although the 2.7 matches the power of the 5.3L , how durable will that engine be?
    On another topic , you've mentioned several times that the 3.0 is not a heavy duty diesel engine like the bigger displacement engines. When ever you say that I think of smaller diesel engines from the 90's that were cheaply made and didn't last long. I know it's hard to predict but how long will that engine last but do we know anything about its reliability?

I agree with most of your comments about the Tundra although some of the issues you mentioned like the heated seats and steering wheel have not been a problem with my Tundra. Maybe because mine was built many months later than yours. I spent many thousands of $$$ fixing a host of problems with my Sierra --especially the fuel injectors-- so I could never give GM one more dime no matter how good their trucks may seem. Still wasn’t impressed and knew I’d pass. Hate the direction all the half tons went with turbo V6 engines, start stop, cylinder deactivation etc. just not interested in all that. So I went to a HD. I think you hit the nail on the head. It is all about the little details. Which of those details matter most is a very personal thing. You have a unique view since your are doing this as a business. Probably any brand will last an adequate amount of time if treated well. Different brands and models may have different issues along the way but none of them are perfect and really none of them are trash. I tend to keep my vehicles about the average amount of time and early this year I chose a RAM with the etorque HEMI. I am happy with my choice but I have had experiences with Fords, GMs and Toyota products along with some others. They are all good and it looks like GM is making some real headway with the latest models. I didn't like the GM trucks that were available when I was in the market because of the little details. I think they have corrected much of that with the latest updates. And yes if you are going to be towing heavy or frequently you should indeed have an HD truck.

But Ford, GM, and Ram have decades and decades of experience and they do indeed listen to their customers. Whether it was GM listening to their customers demanding improved interior environments, Ford listening to their customers in NOT taking away the Coyote, and Ram needing overall quality improvements, they all respond.
    Toyota has had a long fascination with being a big nanny in their vehicles. I'm reminded of the lawyer screen on the old Lexus products that wouldn't even allow music to play unless you accepted the terms EACH time you started the vehicle.
