    What i would like to see is not a top power/torque spec hybrid truck. Take something like either 2.7 from ford or GM which are already very potent engines and pair it to a hybrid for fuel economy and you’d still have something like 350hp and 480lbft.

    • @richardhouvener6423
      @richardhouvener6423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is exactly what all these manufacturers should be making. A truck that will get 26-28 MPG while being able to tow 7-8000 lbs is just what a lot of us are looking for. Not the most powerful truck with a hybrid motor grafted on or a hybrid solely designed for maximum fuel economy with no towing capability. Middle ground, people! That is what we all need.

    If you happen to find yourself with another Powerboost F150, I’d love to see the same route done in that to compare, considering they both have similar torque, power, and similar sized batteries - yet ford claims 24 mpg combined. Why didn’t Toyota benchmark that?

    • @MrFordguy73
      @MrFordguy73 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that would be interesting. That being said I only 21 Powerboost, I can easily get 26 in the city and on occasion have gotten 29, just depends on what type of highway you're running on but that's very easy to get, it's also finicky in the wind, but it's pretty big and heavy so it's to be understandable, but it has tons of power. To be able to run my RV for a week off the back of my truck, and turn around and weld a repair out in the field is very awesome.

These two are nearly idenical, same displacement, similar weight, same fuel injection type, same hybrid setup. Something is off on the tundra.

  • @gwot
    @gwot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Just another reminder to the viewers, the Tundra is NOT, i repeat, NOT made to have better fuel economy, the motor is there to give it an extra umph of power (you know, to do truck stuff), to the exact same engine. Vast majority of better fuel economy hybrids have downsized engines or detuned, that is the biggest factor, not so much the electricity part of it. That being said, the more often the engine shuts off, and the more the motor regenerates, it's gonna be better, but that's just a bonus, not directly intended in this Tundra.

      Except for its much slower than Fords Power boost and even GMs 6.2.
      Combined power numbers on hybrids are a bit of a shell game. The electric motor isn't giving you a boost at wide open throttle. It will give you a boost from a stop and slow speeds. Throw any of these hybrids on a dyno, they won't put more power to the ground than the Gas version.

    The most important part of the hybrid Tundra is not fuel efficiency, but the development of the hybrid system. New technology always has a few bugs to work out of the system. However, in a few years, this hybrid system will improve and become more efficient more powerful and more reliable for off road use. I think this hybrid system is very elegant because it mounts between the engine and transmission. This technology has the potential to convert any vehicle to a hybrid by mounting this system between the engine and transmission. When Top Gear reviewed the McLaren P1, they said that the electric motor filled in the gaps in power from the gas engine.

    Like the Tundra I believe GM needs to add on an inline Hybrid motor power train.
    This is the better move than BEV trucks for people who actually use trucks as Intended to haul and tow any distance out of town.
    I have been considering the Toyota but I am finding out that service and repair on them is going to be very expensive. They are going to need to lift the cab off just to change a turbo.

    For Toyota to do so poorly making this tundra hybrid is pretty shocking to me.
    They have over two decades of experience making hybrids across nearly all of their cars and now SUVs.
    Yet they somehow forgot how to do that with this truck.
    The pricing on this and what you get is frankly pathetic for Toyota.

    I can get this kind of mpg on my conventional non-hybrid V6 RAM with a bit of effort. But I think where hybrid really shines is at hypermiling techniques like pulse and glide. Where I'd really struggle to hit anything over 28mpg on a conventional V6 RAM, hybrid tundra owner could quite easily hit 30-35mpg if they really try.
    It won't help you on the highway, but if you know hypermiling techniques, you will gain massively off the highway.
    Just like regular people driving rav4 hybrid getting 30-40 mpg, or prius 40-50mpg while hypermilers getting ~50-60mpg on rav4 hybrid (off the highway) and 70-80 on prius. And it's not really slower, it's just a lot bigger following distance, so that you rarely have to touch brakes (biggest mpg killer). It does require some getting use to, as it's much more challenging, but when it comes to speed you basically want to always run at ~40-50 mph for maximum fuel efficiency which isn't all that slow.
    And when you accelerate, you must ensure your engine running at the optimal RPM for fuel economy which is somewhere between 1.6k and 2k RPM usually. Run it higher than 2k = lose mpg, run it lower than 1.6k during "pulse" - also lose mpg. For Toyota hybrids it's upper end of "eco" zone.
    For optimal results your driving should only consist of two "modes" = "Pulse" and "Glide". Pulse always between 1.6k and 2k RPM and Glide always with the engine off. Rince repeat.

    One thing I didn't hear you mention was your speed. Your fuel economy was good because of the B roads you. were driving. In Ontario Canada that is up to 80kph. So maybe you were doing 88kph max. This the US magic 55mph. Cars get great milage at this speed. Problem is, when you get out on the highway you're not going this slow. Even just upping your speed to 100kph , your milage will drop.

    I bet the 3.5 turbo is pretty much the same as what Ford engineered. As I recall Toy/Ford are sharing technology. Toy using Ford's eco tech and Ford using Toyota's hybrid tech. Getting 25 MPG's on a full size body on frame is impressive. This is the end of the road one could expect for hybrid design. Only way to improve on that is going full EV or a plug in hybrid design.

    • @JIPlatium
      @JIPlatium 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      EV would be the worst truck choice. Check out TFLtruck channel and see how poorly the Ford Lightning did. Imagine if that truck had to pull a trailer... EV in a truck to work like a gas truck is laughable. Tech for EV needs to greatly improve.

    • @HiPlains1
      @HiPlains1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JIPlatium I agree. The best they could do would be a plug in hybrid. You still need an ICE motor to charge the batteries. Otherwise I expect your right. Range would be abysmal if you started towing. All the oems think they can switch over to EV but there is many issues that have not been sorted out. One, lithium is not an element that is easy to mine in the qualities "they think" they can do. Plus battery oems like Panasonic have capacity issues. Lastly nobody wants to work together on infrastructure. Once you leave your urban environment charging stations become scarce. None of that has been thought out. Not even remotely so.
