I love Jane Eyre I have read over a dozen times. The part at the beginning about the Lowood school always makes me sad. Also when she is locked in her dead uncles room always causes me to cry.
I'd watch another if it were authentic to the Jane's work, and done well. I'd also be just as happy rewatching 1995 BBC with Jennifer and Colin forever.
If you can get your hands on the 1996 "The Tennant of Wildfell Hall" it is well worth watching. It's quite faithful to the source material and Tara Fitzgerald is perfectly cast as The Tennant. For me, if they want a Bronte (and please NOT a Blonde Jane Eyre!), then "Villette" might be worth a shot - though they might have to do something about the unreliable narrator/central character... While they are at it, it's been quite a while since we had any George Elliot adaptations and something like "Silas Marner" would offer potentials for either a straight adaptation or a modern retelling featuring a former American Evangelical in the title role...
That adaptation of the Tenant of Wildfell Hall is amazing. You will love it. Also everything you said could be done for Mansfield Park was already done around the year 2000. I love that one too. A little racier, a little more politicized, but not too much of either.
I think there's nothing wrong with having multiple adaptations of beloved works... however, after the Netflix Persuasion I don't have high hopes for this one.
yes! we definitely need a more powerful version of Mansfield Park than the watery insipid versions thus far created; and Northanger Abbey likewise, could be so much more fun - a teen romp, like Clueless.
Thanks a lot for this video. I would humbly add that they can pick classics from countries and traditions other than England's. We have a big variety of countries and communities to choose from :)
Recently I tried to rewatch Persuasion to see if it was as bad as I remembered. It was worse and I couldn't finish it. Totally agree about being overdue a good Mansfield Park adaptation. I would also love to see a modern Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
I was horrified when the 5 x 50 min 1980 version was cut down to 3.5 episodes for video release. I was so happy to find BBC America released the 5 episodes on DVD. The cast was perfectly chosen, love the production.
OHMYGAWDYES!!! Carmilla!!!! How in the world are there no movie adaptations of that yet? That would be excellent! A problem with many adaptations, IMO, is that classic/Victorian novels tend to be long, and so a lot of the story gets sacrificed. It's a major reason why I've hated all movie versions of The Woman in White -- although a multi-part TV series might be able to do it justice. Same with Count of Monte Cristo - I think you just have to read the book, which granted at 1200+ pages will seem daunting to many people. But Carmilla is an excellent choice: whopping good story in a relatively short novella. By the way, if you do have Disney channel, several months ago they did a show called "Renegade Nell" - some of the people behind it also did "Gentleman Jack." I don't know if it is based on a book (and if so, it is a modern one), but it was a fantastic show. Set in late 1700s, about a woman who becomes a "highwayman" and crusader for revenge/justice. It had a bit of a fantasy element to it. It's kind of like a fantasy fanfiction of history. Really good!
I already saw four period-piece Pride and Prejudice movies. The one with Colin Firth and the one with Lawrence Olivier are the ones I liked the most. Bride and Prejudice 2004, I will give an honorable mention because it is a musical and that it takes place in three different countries in a modern setting. (I love musicals, favorite song in Bride and Prejudice is "No life without Wife". The four sisters singing this song together.)
OMG, I definitely need to see all the adaptations you’ve suggested! If only they find male actors appealing enough. A huge problem of the Netflix Persuasion version (on top of everything else) was the lukewarm Captain, imho. Any chemistry between the lead characters and it would have been a different film altogether.
This was such a fun video, Claudia! I’m a bit P&P’d out, but I do love your concept for a Bridgertonesque version of Northanger Abbey. I’m currently reading NA, and agree that it would readily lend itself to such a retelling. Catherine Morland is much more likely to break the 4th wall, and sass the viewer, than Anne Elliot.
IMO, yes, we can always use another. Maybe, just maybe, it will be good. If not, their loss, I'll keep reading the books and watching 1995. Perhaps it will combine the character accuracy and costume accuracy from 1995 with the correct ages and cinematography of 2005? There's always a chance.
I'd love a new Pride and Prejudice adaptation as I wasn't satisfied with either editions so far BUT only if it's done right. I really hope Nettflix learnet their lesson from Persuasion and doesn't repeat the same mistakes in this one.
The problem with "Do we need another adaptation of" videos is that we don't know if we need it until we actually get it. Did we need another The Thing movie? The original 1950s version was actually really good. Did we need another The Fly? The eighties versions of both became the one everyone thinks of. I'll bet most people didn't know the Curt Russel The Thing was a remake. If it's well cast, well adapted, and says something that the previous adaptations do not, then this one may supplant the 1990s version of Pride and Prejudice. If any of these aspects are lacking, then it will come out and quickly be forgotten as most people will gravitate back to the 1990s TV show or the 2000s movie. (Or maybe --gasp-- read the novel.) Personally, I don't see a problem with new adaptations. Have fun with them if they're good, or toss them in the proverbial dumpster if they aren't.
Tbh I agree that this would be a good time for a Mansfield Park adaptation, but for different reasons and with a different preferred focus: I think the potential is there for a sensitively-handled narrative about surviving abuse. Because in modern parlance, 'abuser' absolutely *is* the role which Mrs Norris plays towards Fanny, and to a greater or lesser extent, all of the Bertrams bar Edmund (who consistently defends Fanny against Mrs Norris if nothing else) are Mrs Norris' enablers at some point.
The only things I'd want from another adaptation are a) Greta Gerwig at the helm, and b) Anna Popplewell (Susan from Narnia) and Georgie Henley (Lucy) being reunited as onscreen sisters as Jane and Lizzy respectively. Anna would be a great Jane and after seeing bits of Georgie on _The Spanish Princess_ I'm convinced that girl is a hugely underrated actress and actually has the range to pull off a great Lizzy. Yes, we're all ancient and she's old enough to play the part now. I know it's too much wishful thinking on my part though especially since Greta's too busy (coincidentally) fighting with Netflix to let her release her Narnia reboot in theaters
Agree Tenant of Wildfell hall would be great for tv. Glad you mentioned Harlots,I loved that series,it was so good and I've never found anyone who watched it. Yes,we don't need another P&P but obviously we would all watch one!
I liked that Tenant of Wildfell Hall movie. I remember when I first watched it on A&E (back when they showed a lot of those movies). I would be OK with a new one though. But yes, while I love Austen, there are so many other works that could be made into movies/series. P&P (1995) was perfect don't mess with it. Unlike previous P&P adaptions it doesn't look like the 60s etc pretending to be Regency England. Whatever they do make, just don't mess with it trying to make it about a girl boss etc like the latest Persuasion mess
I was onboard until you said Dolly Alderton 😂 my favourite definitely the 1995 bbc mini series but my best friend’s favourite is the film with Keira Knightly, so I feel like a new adaptation will be someone’s favourite!!!
Yes ('Fire Island' which should've had a theatrical release) and no (Netflix has too many misfires). As a Gen Z Queer South Asian, I've had 'Bride and Prejudice' and 'Fire Island' (alongside the classic Keira Knightley period drama where a hot guy is down bad for her).
To be fair, that describes most films Keira Knightley has ever been in 😅 (lovely to hear from you btw - I sent you an email earlier this month and was wondering whether you got it)
Sanditon was pretty good, but it was a great shame that Theo James chose to leave after only one series. Mind you his character was a bit of an arse and would probably have made her unhappy. The one she ended up with would have treated her better.
The 1995 version is perfect and my favorite. But I love the 2005 one too. Both were made before I was born lol. Saying this as an 18 year old! Some of us don't want another one!
I wouldn't say need, as it was an essential for keep on living. But we can always have one more to compare and say that 2005 was so much better and that none will ever beat 1995 BBC. Same goes for the actors casted for Lizzie and, primarily, Darcy's role.
Good to see you Claudia. I guess each generation wants their own version of P&P - but please let it not be made by the folks that made that awful version of Persuasion (my favorite Austen). I would like to see an updated adaptation of some of these novels: The Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann Therese Racquin by Emile Zola The Golden Bowl by Henry James A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton Sunset Song by Lewis Gribbon
I had my 2005 P&p which launched my love for Jane Austen. Gen Z & Gen Alpha deserves a good adaptation of a Jane Austen novel that will let them discover her fabulous writing and characters.
I only saw the 2 last BBC series. I should look for the first 4. I admit I am part of those who stopped going to the movies. I used to have a subscription and go a lot. I switched to a streaming subscription. I could not stand anymore being in a room with smartphone screens lighting up every few seconds somewhere in the theater catching the eye. And also with people answering to the same smartphones and having their conversations just as in their living room.
New subscriber here. Very much agree with you! Highly recommend the BBC adaptation of “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.” Hope you enjoy it! And yes, it would great to see a new version. I also am super annoyed by Fanny in “Mansfield Park.” :)
As much as I love the mid-'90s adaptation of Tenant, I am dying for a remake. It's such a forward-thinking novel and still so relevant, especially if you have experience with alcoholics. Anne Bronte deserves more attention than she gets! We don't need yet another Jane Eyre, and as far as I'm concerned, the 2011 adaption of Wuthering Heights is the best we're going to get. There's no need to revisit either novel for a while, and I would rather filmmakers focus on the Bronte's other works if we're going to get more adaptations.
There are many other excellent books that would be great to adapt, another P & P is not required. The Keira Knightly Matthew Macfadyen version was definitive.
I loved the BBC'S Tennant of Wildfelhall adaptation so much I tried to read it but as must have been only 11 or 12 at the time I gave up because the read was too challenging. I've read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights as an adult so perhaps it's time to give Tennant another go.
I enjoyed your comments on P&P adaptations but was surprised by two things….. (i) how you managed to avoid saying how awful the 2005 film was (imho) despite the delightful Kiera Knightly who should surely have been Jane not Lizzie and (ii) you didn’t mention Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which in so many ways adapts P&P beautifully… albeit with zombies. Certainly one of the best Mr Collins ever portrayed by Matt Smith. I’m new to your channel so maybe you’ve reviewd PP&Z…. I’ll check 😀
Haha, you can save yourself the effort - I've not read or watched Pride & Prejudice & Zombies - I'm sure I will one day. I didn't say the 2005 film was awful because I don't think it was awful. I don't like it nearly as much as the 1995 adaptation, but it's a decent enough film.
I don't have Netflix. I refuse to on principle because not everyone can afford it. So I will not be seeing it. I don't have time to waste on adaptions that ruin the book for me. Spinster, have you read the Athena Club books? Theodora Goss wrote a trilogy about the women who are usually killed off in Victorian fiction (like the puma woman in The Island of Dr. Moreau). Carmilla is a character in it and she's fantastic. It's fascinating and I love it.
I don’t remember what year it came out, but there was one adaptation of Mansfield Park that implied quite heavily that the wealthy family Fanny lived with, got their wealth from slave plantations in the Caribbean, which I had never picked up on, just reading the book. I didn’t enjoy the story. Overall, the secondary characters were not exemplary people. I probably wouldn’t watch another adaptation. I enjoy Northanger Abbey a lot both the book and the adaptation with Felicity Jones and JJ Fields. I honestly don’t see how they could improve on that one. I do wish the powers that be weren’t so risk-averse, and would select another author all together to showcase. They might have a huge hit on their hands! 🤷♀️😄

I too love Villette
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is a brilliant adaptation. I love it.
I'm only 3 minutes into this video, and I love your sense of humor 😄
...also, BBC's period drama should make this video required viewing for its employees.
That sounds really fun, thank you for the recommendation!
Wasn't there a movie adaptation of _Carmilla_ just a few years ago? Jessica Raine from _Call the Midwife_ was in it, I think...
The other modern day versions of Pride and Prejudice, I can't remember them.
Definitely, she had so much more chemistry with William Elliot.
The bbc 1980 one is really good and underrated.
Enjoyed this, thank you. You did slip up at 10.32 when you said 'Mansfield Park but meant 'Northanger Abbey'
Yes I was hoping no one would notice.
@@SpinstersLibrary Totally forgivable! Anyone who hates Netflix Persuasion as much as I do is ok in my book.
I want it if only to be super disappointed and have something to criticise for days!
Don't call me out like that 😅
Yes... I can't get enough.
I'd love a new Pride and Prejudice adaptation as I wasn't satisfied with either editions so far BUT only if it's done right. I really hope Nettflix learnet their lesson from Persuasion and doesn't repeat the same mistakes in this one.
I wouldnt count on it judging by the mess they have made of Bridgerton.
(Or maybe --gasp-- read the novel.)
Personally, I don't see a problem with new adaptations. Have fun with them if they're good, or toss them in the proverbial dumpster if they aren't.
I adore the 1980 version. It got me through my English Lit exams. I still watch it today. ❤
The 1996 Tenant of Wildfell Hall is pretty good, if memory serves. And YES to a Lady Audley's Secret adaptation.
I really need to watch that Tenant adaptation!
I would love to see Longborn ( it is about the house keeper and her son)
Yes. The answer is always yes.
YESSSS for The Tenant of Wildfell Hall! It is still so very relevant.
I'd prefer they'd take a wack at an Ann Radcliffe, Frances Burney, or Maria Edgeworth book. But I get why they keep doing Austen adaptations.
I was onboard until you said Dolly Alderton 😂 my favourite definitely the 1995 bbc mini series but my best friend’s favourite is the film with Keira Knightly, so I feel like a new adaptation will be someone’s favourite!!!
I definitely think we need a new Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Also, what about Shirley?
Yes ('Fire Island' which should've had a theatrical release) and no (Netflix has too many misfires).
As a Gen Z Queer South Asian, I've had 'Bride and Prejudice' and 'Fire Island' (alongside the classic Keira Knightley period drama where a hot guy is down bad for her).
To be fair, that describes most films Keira Knightley has ever been in 😅
(lovely to hear from you btw - I sent you an email earlier this month and was wondering whether you got it)
@@SpinstersLibraryI replied to the mail
You have "A Series of Unfortunate Events" on your shelf!😍
Absolutely loved BBCs Tenent of Windfell Hall!
I’m pretty worried about all the new adaptations of classics 😭😭 especially the new wuthering heights (with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi)
Your makeup is totally on point and flawless today. ❤
Thank you 😊
I wouldn't say need, as it was an essential for keep on living. But we can always have one more to compare and say that 2005 was so much better and that none will ever beat 1995 BBC. Same goes for the actors casted for Lizzie and, primarily, Darcy's role.
No.. No we do not. The 1995 BBC mini series was perfect. Stop messing with perfection ! 🤨
Good to see you Claudia. I guess each generation wants their own version of P&P - but please let it not be made by the folks that made that awful version of Persuasion (my favorite Austen).
I would like to see an updated adaptation of some of these novels:
The Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann
Therese Racquin by Emile Zola
The Golden Bowl by Henry James
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton
Sunset Song by Lewis Gribbon
I had my 2005 P&p which launched my love for Jane Austen. Gen Z & Gen Alpha deserves a good adaptation of a Jane Austen novel that will let them discover her fabulous writing and characters.
That's a fair point and I hope they get that - not sure we can trust Netflix with the responsibility though 😅
Yes, I want more and more Jane Austen.
The answer to this question is ALWAYS, EMPHATICALLY, YES!
Well they did say that ‘Pride’, a P&P modern retelling did get picked up… So we are getting two versions?
Im actually a big fan of the book Mansfield Park and would LOVE a good Mansfield Park adaptation.
Great commentary!
Thank you!
Mansfield Park is my favorite Austen. And i hate what the 1999 film did to it. So it'd be nice to have that adapted but NOT like Netflix Persuasion.
Yes we Always need more Austen and period pieces in general to compensate for any rare garbage versions.
You should, I'm sure you'd appreciate it a lot more as an adult
Ah, what could possibly go wrong? And also...we just don't need one. Why not make a series from a novel that hasn't been very adequately covered yet?
And let it be a long like 10 part series
I would rather them adapt Northanger Abbey.
Yes, we need another P&P adaptation. I’ll take it!
I would appreciate an adaptation of Persuasion or Mansfield Park as I have not found a great one to watch.
please don't if it's netflix.
Yes!!! We do!!!
I thought I’d seen The Other Bennett Sister was going to be made (?). edit . Oh okay I did 😊
Movie or TV could hack Carmilla to bits and I wouldn’t care-but you better respect Jane Austen!
That's the 1999 Mansfield Park with Frances O'Connor
@ thanks, I only saw it once so couldn’t remember the details. 😄
I would prefer if they made a movie using one the many sequels that have been written.
The BBC are adapting The Other Bennet Sister, which is exactly that.
