I'm here from Pete's latest video. I did a bit of a deep dive into it this afternoon because for some reason as a newish airline pilot flying the B737 in 1991 I barely remember this accident. I found some good articles, it was a bit of a refresher on systems. Now that I'm retired and living part time here in Bangkok, I really want to take a journey up there and visit the park and the site. Great video, thanks.
Ok, I can understand why you relate to the videos content. It’s very remote but not that hard to visit outside of the rainy season with a car with decent clearance (a pickup is fine). It’s on Google Maps as Lauda Air Flight 004 Shrine but please don’t mistake it for the Lauda Air Memorial which although related, is a couple of hours drive away from the crash site itself. Cheers

That's a beautifully shot film Karl. I can tell a lot of thought went into making it. I was on Ko Samui when it happened, and there was an accident at that airport in 2009, in which the pilot was killed and several passengers injured. I enjoyed your chat with the ranger....*You know how much faith I've got in their signage* Haha

Hi Karl i remember that crash very well, i was also living in Bangkok at the time & remember seeing the bloody images in various newspapers and magazines of the remains of passengers hanging from trees & the forest thai tribes robbed them of all their possessions!! Yes, some aspects brought a lot of shame both local and National at the time. It was a long time ago now though and it was never my intention to dwell on these aspects as shocking as they were.
I have to admit i chuckled a bit when I saw the title of the video having the words crash and Lauda in the same sentence. I had no idea Niki had an airline. So sad. I am suprised that crash investigators left so much debris yet not suprised that so much is untouched by the Thai people. Bad mojo for sure in their minds. Too bad there were looters though. 😢
I remember hearing the news about the plane crash in the 90s, didn't know anymore that it happened in Thailand. I only knew it was a great tragedy in Austria, being a 10 year old kid at the time I didn't pay much attention to the facts of the story. I can see why Thais might avoid visiting this national park.
My uncle in Miami had a patch of bamboo. After it rained sometimes I would sit in the middle of it and listen to the creeking as it grew. It can grow an inch in an hour if it has the nutrients and water. I've never seen a bamboo forest, but of course they are legendary in many cultures for their stories of mysterious voices and sightings. There has never been a single event of supernatural activity ever recorded, but it I suppose it's possible. Very interesting history there and RIP to all those lost souls. It seems like in aviation and fire safety and submarines that it takes a human tragedy before critical design flaws are identified and corrected far too frequently. I had an Eddie Bauer Bronco for many years (in New Jersey) and I'd take a chain saw with me when I was dirt roading it in Upstate New York or wherever. With bamboo I guess you could throw those 10 meter spindles like a javalin but if there was a wash-out, maybe some bigger stuff might fall... I love a good exxcuse to use chain saws... lol.
Bamboo is incredible stuff, strong enough to make bridges with when it's fresh yet weak enough to crumble in your fingers when it's dry. Those sounds were truly creepy mal
I remember this accident happen and never knew you could visit the crash site. The panel were brian finds the cutlery is part of one of the inboard engine fan cowls, forward of the thrust reverser. The inboard fan cowls have chines on and you can see it in the video. I will visit this site myself one day. Interesting video, and many modifications were implemented after this crash to prevent in air thrust reverser deployments. Thanks for sharing this karl. Again taking the viewers were no other youtubers have ventured.

I was a great fan of Niki Lauda, and actually got to see him race at Silverstone once, I can remember the crash, but somehow I remembered it taking place in China, so was amazed to see this video Karl. On a different note, do you know why those shrines have those little ladders on them, haven't seen these before?
One thing I do remember Chris was Niki's sense of responsibility and speed of action once he heard of the crash, he immediately flew to the crash site and was involved at every level. Also I saw an interview where he said it was the hardest time in his life and that was coming from a man who had been through a lot. I just asked some Thais about the ladders on the spirit houses and they said it's so that the spirits can get home.
There was a lot of shame felt afterwards, both Internationally as well as locally. It was a long time ago now and I'm confident we have moved on. Thank you
I would add that in such a catastrophic accident like this with the tail plane breaking up mid air the debris field must have scattered over a huge area, hence why not every piece of wreckage was retrieved. Just a thought.

Incredible that so much debris was left. Generally when you see reports on airline crashes they police up every bit of scrap as humanly possible. I wonder if this was bc of how remote it is??
It certainly was very remote back then especially, at least now there are 7 kilometers of dirt track heading there from the National Park HQ. Although the wreckage was in that area I suspect that some of the wreckage there now was found elsewhere and taken there so that there's more to see at the shrine. Cheers

There's probably FAR more wreckage still out there in the jungle that's never been found, since it was an in-flight breakup. Lauda Air 004 was a particularly horrifying one.
For sure Ryan and one of the signs does mention 'many shrines' although I expect some of them would take a lot of effort to reach. I might do it some time for a follow up vlog.
