    King of small machines! I see why you love this stuff so much. You take a big problem, break it down into smaller manageable parts, do the work, & then watch yourself succeed !!!

    It's fun to watch what an intelligent and strong man can do with simple tools like a peavey, a come-along and a couple ramps!

    Nice job! It's always a pleasure to get some free logs and have them milled into lumber. You can use it as a selling point to your customers, too, since the whole idea of using local materials to build nice, affordable furniture is becoming more popular. More and more people are starting to want their furniture made by a craftsman they know using native materials rather than in a factory across the world with some random rain forest tree!

    Once again a stellar video. Why do we so excited seeing this timber? Just watched Wranglerstars mill and if I was 35 years younger I would own one of these Mills. And yes 35 years ago I couldn't afford one. Just the way it works. Be SAFE and enjoy this timber. Looking forward to seeing it milled and put to a good use.

    I was trying to figure out a way to be more efficient getting firewood. Did some TH-cam research and ran across your video. Used the same method but with a winch and it was the easiest firewood retrieving I have ever done. I have a few small bugs to work out with my method but your video helped so much. I’m not sure why I never thought of it, very simple and very effective

    Man I wish I would have seen that video a year ago!!
    Something that worked well for me was using some schedule 80, 2.5 inch PVC. The logs slide side to side on them well, they also works as good rollers if you don't want to rip up the grass.
    Great videos, love it!

    • @talkingcargojunkremoval
      @talkingcargojunkremoval 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And PVC can handle that kinda weight?

    • @williamwalters3796
      @williamwalters3796 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@talkingcargojunkremoval on grass or mulch probably, on concrete I think they would permanently deform or just break. So far I’ve been using 2-3 inch oak logs for rollers/skids for moving logs.

    Great work, good to see different technique for getting logs loaded without a powered wench! Also good to hear you talk through the trailer considerations, weight, towing, weights, etc... See too many people out on the road sometimes that have trailers overloaded and loads not properly secured, good to see you setting a good example.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It worked good, they are heavy, but rolling vs lifting/dragging reduces the required power by a great deal. Where it may not work as well would be if the log was pretty irregular, but even then you could do it. I just used the come along, a winch would do it much faster and easier. Mine decided not to work once I got there. I'll be getting another one soon.

    (A string goes into a bar but each time the bartender says "we don't serve your kind in here!". The string has and idea and returns a bit later. Bartender..."weren't you the string I kicked out of here a min ago?". String... "No, I'm a frayed knot!"

      Indeed, I'm excited about the lumber. Hopefully it dries flat, I'm milling it to 5/4 which is fairly thin for boards that wide. It's a dead standing tree so I'm hoping that the boards don't cup. We'll see.

    Just milled some reclaimed dead red oak. Noticing that if the bark came of the tree right away, the wood can be really nice and solid. BUT if the bark stayed on for a long time it gets rotten under their fairly quickly...

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the bark stays on it gives a place for the bugs to easily tunnel under, eating all the soft inner bark. Usually the inside is solid.

    have you seen matt cremonas log arch trailer?
    i dont know how much wood you reclaim, but it sure makes it easy to recover logs.
    scratch that, i see from the comments you have, i guess its a cost vs time saved thing like always.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure which comments you read but yes, I've seen his log arch as well as many others on TH-cam and around the web. I may end up making one, but would like it to be able to come off. I'm using the trailer for more than logs so it would be in the way for certain tasks. Rolling the logs up the ramp is very easy and for what ever reason the way I'd prefer do it. I like that the weight is not suspended and the tension is less on the cable. My plan is to make the current ramps removable and able to be placed on either side of the trailer as well, so that they can be positioned wherever needed. For long logs the sides would be a better to approach it from. And if the log is irregular, the winch I plan on getting will just drag the log up. Regardless of what I'll do, you'll be able to see which route I go in future videos.

    That will make some super pretty boards for sure. The local guy that milled wood seems to have stopped all together. Its a sad day when that happens but i can watch ur channel and know its still being done. Can people take their lovs to the sawmill and have them cut?

      I'm not going to say there's a bunch, but there's plenty of people that mill lumber in my area. The particular guy that mills for me isn't really in the business of doing it for others but has a select few people he will mill for. Luckily I'm one of them.

    Wow, what a haul! I take it this was from a private property. I have a couple questions, if you don't mind. Not sure if you were called for this or if you asked the owners if you could take the logs. If the latter, how do you communicate to them that their lawn will get screwed up by dragging the logs and how long do you think it will take to "heal". Also (again, if you propositioned them), how do you get them to agree to you only taking a couple of logs instead of the whole tree? Do you pay them for the logs?
    I long to do this kind of "free" wood shopping someday, and your videos are a valuable how-to for that. Keep 'em coming!

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I saw them on the side of the road, and knocked on the door. No one answered so I looked up the owner on city records. Once I had their name, I looked them up online, ended up getting in touch with them on Facebook. They said I could take what I want. I did not cut the tree down, I just got the 3 logs. Most average people are not going to worry about money for the logs, they just want them gone. As far as the lawn, it really wasn't that bad. It was just 3 skid marks, a little grass seed this time of the year it will be back to normal in a few weeks. As long as you don't wreck the place, most people would rather throw a little seed down than deal with the wood. In this case, it was a take what you want situation, some people will want you to take it all. You just have to weigh it out and decide whether its worth it.

    To anyone coming here: do not ever use a trailer hitch to pull a dead weight. This is made to pull a weight on wheels.
    When this thing breaks, the rope/chain will fly back in the other direction with tremendous power which can hurt or even kill someone.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975

      In this case, yes. I pick up stuff when it goes on sale, for example the straps where $10 each, the chain was $20, the come along $20. Some things are nice to have a nice brand, others don't matter. I like trying out the less expensive options and these pass my test.......so far! Thanks for watching.

      The blanket makes it a little safer in case something breaks or comes loose. There's a good bit of tension on the line.

    slowly but surely safety first covering that cable with blanket thats a good idea..

    What about installing an electric winch on your trailer for jobs like that?

      I had one with me that broke, so I went with what I had. I'll be adding a large winch to the trailer eventually.

    You may need more meat and tater's if your going to move many more logs. :-) Do you have a video of these logs getting milled? A follow up would be great.

      These logs have not been milled yet, once they are I'll show the lumber. Thanks.

    awesome video, thx! noob question: why do you put a blue blanket over your chain?

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The blanket gives a little protection in case something breaks or comes loose. Even rolling the logs up like this there is a lot of tension on the winch cable, chain and strap around the log. If the strap broke for example, the chain could come back and hit me, the blanket would just slow it down. This is important especially if you are directly in line with the cable. That's why I rigged everything to put me to the side of the trailer, out of the way.

    Hey there, interesting approach to getting those logs out there... one small question, is that some special blanket you put over the cable to limit it snapping back if it breaks, or will any blanket do? Thanks. :)
    Oh, and: why didn't you take some of the smaller logs? Just curious. Thanks. :)

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's in case something comes loose or breaks, a chain or cable gets pretty dangerous under tension. The smaller logs just were not worth it to me...I have a wood problem.

    I was ready to register a custom trailer just like yours for moving logs, but I was told I needed fenders over the wheels! Has that come up for you, or is it legal in your state?

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just took the title to the DMV and put it into my name. Just put something on it that looks like fenders then take them off after if you want. I like not having them, just one more thing in the way that can get messed up.

    Could you tell us how much it costs in your area to get wood milled?? I see free trees that have been cut down all the time on Craigslist and would love to make lumber out of them.

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It varies from person to person, my guy gives me a friend price. Some people charge by the hour, some by the board foot. By the hour, I've seen prices around $50 per hour, with a minimum 2 hours and a set up fee. So your looking at at least a couple hundred for someone to come to you with a portable mill. Prices per board foot range widely. I think somewhere around .40 cents give or take is normal to mill....but I'm not sure on that. Again, I'm getting a friendly deal. Just look up people with portable mills in your area and call them.

      OK thanks a lot. I think that is reasonable if you take a nice amount of wood it is defiantly cheaper than buying it in the store.

    Do you not have the winch you used with your old trailer anymore? Or are those logs to heavy?

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do, but it broke when I was picking the logs up. The come along is not hard, just slower. I'm going to be adding a winch to the trailer but needed to pick these logs up before the got cut up. Thanks.

    If you get a chance check out Matt Cremona channel. His trailer is similar to yours and he added a harbor freight wench to his and a log lift . Really cuts down on load time and some of the back breaking work.

      I've seen it, looks good. There's a lot of videos of people hauling logs and lumber with log arches on trailers and trucks. I was very happy with rolling them like this, but do plan on adding a winch. I have one but it decided not to work on this outing so I had to manually load the log. Thanks.

      hi, he said that he doesn't want this harch thing because it kinda make the trailer usable just for trees, and he prefer to have it ready for about anything, watch the videos about the trailer !

      Just wanted to see if it could help you out. I'm very aware of working alone. Not always easy. Those logs will make some really nice table tops. Keep up the great work, I'm enjoying the heck out of your videos.
