You should check to see if the gardener put a shovel through the line set. Let his insurance pickup part of the replacement cost.
This is a smart and cordial customer. He knows he doesn't know anything about A/C and listens to you. For someone who think A/C condensers should blow cold air, he's in good hand.

The unit is buried in the ground AND it doesn't help that the downspout is pointed right at the unit which means every time it rains it will discharge a lot of water on the unit. By the way, that unit is from 1999. They got almost 25 years out of it so it did its time.
I can’t get over that. The unit is sitting inside of dirt when it rains that mud gets hard like cement all against the coils. What a mess.
The best part is that the gutter drains right next to the air conditioner in the dirt. Unbelievable!!!
Those filters are the same as nothing. They use to come with the units. I've seen those clean several times and a coil completely stopped up . Have a great day .
Steve is one in a million tech. Most don’t want anything to do with the customer getting involved or the tech really explaining the situation. Keep up the good work Steve.
Always great to see Molly-such a cute dog. I’m always scared with small dogs at the windows of car windows opened wide but I was rather protective of my kids, too where I never let them out of my sight at malls & parks & all that.

Check for a leak that could possibly be fixed or could’ve leaked from flare caps loose, or Schrader valves need to be replaced before you recommend a new unit
I once bought a house in which the AC cooled the first floor fine, but wouldn't cool the 2nd floor, no matter how low I set the thermostat.
Since the bedrooms were on the 2nd floor, I wanted the 2nd floor icy cold and the 1st floor more moderate.
I called an HVAC guy, but he said the system was working correctly according to spec.
So what I did to fix the problem was move the thermostat to the 2nd floor in the hallway just outside the bedrooms, and I also unscrewed the vents and screwed them on pointing into the room rather than against the wall.
My bedrooms were icy cold after that, even in the hottest heat waves !
Another HVAC guy cleaning my system some time after that commented that my vents were "backwards," but I just shrugged 'cuz I didn't want to argue with the "expert."

Exactly. People expect a bargain HVAC condensor to last 15 or 20 years with zero maintenace.
My outside condenser is almost 20 years old.
I clean it regularly. It only needed a 1 time gas fill of 1 pound.
Otherwise a dependable unit. My wife is an A/C queen. Adding central air to a house with hot water baseboard has paid off in spades for almost 20 years.
Next time I replace it won’t cost me as much.
My sons unit went 46 years. My 8 year old unit failed.

@@ClickClan100 Yes, however my A/C mechanic suggested if we use it a lot & we want to have it topped off? We could add a pound at $100 extra for another pound? I opted for it. For all I know it might not have been full after it was first installed in 2004? I thought a one pound loss in almost twenty years was a good value. My Suburban is twenty six years old. For whatever reason that needs frequent topping off of 134-A to keep going year after year. Although I’ve replaced each component at least twice already.
Had the same issue with sleep breathing (or lack of...) Sleep center had me diagnosed and a machine assigned to me in under a week. Fully "Auto" and the machine keeps close tabs on my breathing.
Glad you got that sorted out! That can lead to some pretty nasty side effects.
Unfortunately im awaiting a sleep study there is a 2y wait, NHS is collapsing but at least we have it. The hospital that I have to go to is 7h round trip too

I would have hooked up the nitrogen just out of curiosity, might have been an easy fix.

This house deserves a new a/c properly sized. Fixing that 20 yr old unit would be a disservice. That attic is huge with nice looking ductwork.
Why wouldn't you at least throw nitrogen in to find exactly where it's leaking to get him up an d running .Might be an easy fix like the condenser, schrader valve or line set

A lot of companies have policies where they don't repair R22 systems only replace.
Good money after bad. Ancient unit, buried condenser, hundreds of dollars in R22, labor costs.... I think Steve made the right call for the customer.
Probably 6 pounds at 175+ a pound plus hundreds for a leak repair. I would not consider that cost effective.
@@potatolew4495 Additional diagnosis will cost hundreds too. And with the system junk, R22, and fully drained, that is not a good gamble. Even if it works, potential failure soon as that outside unit looked terrible (in and near) the dirt.
Guy lives in a nice house so replacement is the right call IMHO.
I've never seen so many a breaker boxes in one location anyone around that town heard of a 200-amp breaker box I'm pretty sure it will accommodate all that
Somehow I don’t buy that the guy didn’t know something was up. The breaker was pulled and turned, also his entire system was empty. And he was way too happy for someone who just found out he was looking at spending 12 grand on a new system. I’m thinking Steve was a second opinion.
Yep, I think you're right, I think Steve was the 2nd opinion. Probably didn't didn't like his regular a/c guy's diagnosis, saw Steve's truck and called for another opinion. That makes more sense than what he said actually happened.
Hi Steve, great job!!, hopefully your staying cool with the heat and humidity!, I'm in Southern California and it's around 105 degrees today!, but, I have a question that the A/C guys couldn't answer, and that is why isn't the 'A' coil plenum have a removable panel that you can remove to vacuum out the underside of the coil !?, especially when you had to cut into the customers A/C in a couple of videos back and brush/vacuum out the dust pile !
Poor mechanical design. Some have removable plates inside the actual coil to get to the underside. Otherwise you have to evacuate the system and cut the coil out and clean it outside of it's casing. Sometimes if the linset is long enough you can pull it out and clean without cutting it out.
Steve, I have sleep apnea too. I lost 40 lbs which helped but i still use the CPAP for better sleep. I also put the bed up on blocks to elevate my head at night. Sleep apneas a real bitch.

Really hope that Breaker for the 18 + 19 is for a sub panel it says Basement Lights/Plugs...... When you look closely the breaker says 100amps
Cost of R22 is just too cost prohibitive to play with, esp 1999 system. But the disconnect was shutoff because previous HVAC contractor told the homeowner that it was done, about 100% sure that your homeowner knew it.

Steve I been using cpac about 2 years... hard at begining but got use to it ..I would get up every 2 hours to pee.. morning very tired...now i get 7 hours or better ..lot of energy in morning
hopefully you explained that R22 isn't being manufacturered anymore and is being phased out, which is a big reason to replace the system anyway.

That is the most abused A/C condenser I have ever seen 😆
Actually, the evap goes from A very low temp to a very high temp causing excessive expansion and retraction which over time causes strs fractures (leaks).
Maybe The Yard Maintenance Guy thought that it needed to be burried.

Bottom of the unit shows how little his lawn service cares. Those fins have been whacked over and over by a string trimmer. I want to know why it wasn't sitting on a pad. Pad's not only get them up off the ground but the foam inside helps absorb the vibrations making it easier on the whole thing over time.
I’m surprised you didn’t put a little nitrogen in and see. A valve could be leaking. The lawn guys could of broke a line messing around.

Good morning Steven I'm a subscriber love your vids and Molly ! I need your input I live in central NJ just moved here in 2022 seems like contractors over here don't know what they doing ? Just had a hvac system installed "lennox" my house is a split level I have 15 registers and 3 returns house is 1529 sq feet forced air high angle ceilings up to 15' . Old system was 100k btu 1985 system and a 3 ton Ac compressor . They installed a 2 stage vs furnace up to 4 ton with a 17 seer 3.5 ton condenser and new digital WiFi thermostat . So the condenser keeps turning on and off ranging from 5 to 8 min no matter what I set it to which is typically at 75-77 so it's not staying on long enough do you think or know that this system is too big for my house ? Please help I value your opinion Thanks Steven !

I'd have to have something attempted to see if I could get cool until I replace it.Could've had a ver slow leak over time since the guy has only had it 3 years. I'm from Florida so I would've found out in 3 hours. I worked with a woman that had that but later found out her ex boyfriend had sneaked into the yard and cut the line. It was found and repaired.

@looking_33 It all about cost as you expect...... But it's like everything pay full price early = cheaper then renew all the renewable part like main unit when necessary .... if done wrong or cheaped out big time in the early days = big bills. Window units are a short term fix.
easy fix. It needs a hard starter installed for the compressor. Add a little bit of r-22 to find the leak with a soapy water spray bottle. Fix leak. Fill up with R-22. Done deal. Units should get 30 year life cycles.

Easy fix? How do you know it's an easy fix? Why would you spend $1500 to $2000 fixing a 25-year-old R-22 unit? Makes absolutely no sense.
It looks like that gutter downspout is directed right at the section that Steve was trying to unbury. Maybe someone should direct it away?

I am also a HVAC tech not saying my ideas are better than anybody else's but my opinion is if you can see through the filter then dark can go through it I like to use a light pleated filter they're usually White and sometimes I buy the ones that are called true blue they are a cheap filter but they work as good as the high dollar filters and I think they are better then than blue green and whatever other when's that you can see through but that's just my opinion on this matter but this gentleman is a good HVAC tech

This is nuts, he needs a whole new system because it's out of refrigerant?? Could be a very simple leak and you're selling him an entire new system. There's nothing wrong with R22, it's expensive and being phased out, so that's used as a selling point...
i put a nice plastic pad under my outside unit landscape cloth and rocks around that what goofy people put their unit on the ground and have mulch around it or weeds.
great idea having the downspout dumping water on it extra cooling LOL too bad it will made unit sink in the mud

Are you sure the compressor did not blow one of its terminals? Just last month i serviced a bryant that the compresser was not running, and i did not even need to put a gauge on it as i could smell the mineral oil from the compressor. I tested countinuity at contactor, an none on run termi al for the heck of it, i popped the top, and i removed tbe compressor termial box cover to find the run terminal sticking about an inch out of the fustite seal, looking at the inside of the plastic terminal cover, after i cleaned the oil off of it, i could see a ding in the plastic ehere the tetmial was flung into it with force. The customer was poor, and i backed down both liquid, and suction valves, and flushed out the evap, and lines, then filled with 200 lbs nitrogen for pressure check. Then i sold him a good used condenser, and got him up and running. To this day thay unit still works.

If the compressor isn't running, the gauges would read equal pressures. Both gauges showed zipola...Stick the fork in it...she's done.

You don't want to pay me to change your filters! I bet the copper rusted through right at the compressor from being buried and having a gutter washing over it. Stupid place to put a gutter. Move the gutter drain when you work on it next.
