I'm 52 and watching MJ growing up i mimicked that little split hesitation on the jump, allowing him to reach his highest point before releasing. It made me an incredible jump shooter without understanding how. Especially in the post, reaching to peak of my jump allows me to see the basket, makes edits per the defender as to more arc.

With the leg coming out on the jump shot can be explained. The leg coming out is a range of motion used for balance. Its like the kickstand on a bike. It flips outwardly at a slant so as to give the bike a range of balance when in a standing still position away from its center of gravity. If the bike stood upright it could easily be affected by gravity falling to either the left or right. With the kickstand keeping the bike at an angle it can fix a position securing it for stability. Same with the kick out of the leg. its all about positioning and stability. Other players who also use this method includes Grant Hill, Latrell Spreewell even Pippen himself at times used this method.

MJ naturally jumped higher than Kobe so I think Kobe needed to plant both feet, so that's why he would hop into his shot. He had to generate more lift to get it off over people. Also probably why he held it a little farther back over his head. But Kobe's game is almost a mirror image of MJ's.
I think Michael not using a hop indicates he had more vertical power than Kobe did, to not need to do it. Michael had a better centre of gravity and better body control. It also makes the entire play faster and more efficient with energy expenditure. I'd love to see an analysis about Michael's form up to 1993, versus post-1993, as they're different.

Kobe was filmed slightly to his right, while MJ was directly in front of him thus Kobe seems curved. You can see it on this comparison at 5:22, both have exactly the same lift paths. The difference between their free throw shot is MJ bends down a little lower than Kobe.
You also need to take work ethics into the equation. Jordan was a monster when it came to working hard. Equally so was Kobe. Kobe gad to work probably a bit harder to reach top level as he wasn't as naturally talented as MJ. I would say, MJ is the goat, Kobe comes second.

There is a clear difference between these two athletes. Michael Jordan was clearly the better player of the two, and is hands down the most skilled player to have ever played the game. He did not have to work as hard as Kobe to take shots . His knowledge of the game and positioning mastery were next level. The only thing Kobe had on Michael was shooting the three but I look at that as a weakness for Kobe not a strength because Michael was just better at getting better shots and positioning. I think in their primes Michael wins against Kobe 95% of the time. Remember Kobe was competing with Michael well past his prime and Michael was still winning championships. It wasn’t until Michael was way over the hill that Kobe was able to beat him. In their primes no way that would happen period.

Kobe only started using the hop more later in his career. Early in his career it was almost always 1-2
Kobe was double jointed. He could shoot out more pockets including off the wrong foot.

There is a clear difference between these two athletes. Michael Jordan was clearly the better player of the two, and is hands down the most skilled player to have ever played the game. He did not have to work as hard as Kobe to take shots . His knowledge of the game and positioning mastery were next level. The only thing Kobe had on Michael was shooting the three but I look at that as a weakness for Kobe not a strength because Michael was just better at getting better shots and positioning. I think in their primes Michael wins against Kobe 95% of the time. Remember Kobe was competing with Michael well past his prime and Michael was still winning championships. It wasn’t until Michael was way over the hill that Kobe was able to beat him. In their primes no way that would happen period.
