    The concept of "jihad" in Islam is often oversimplified, and in this episode we explore one example of a "pacifist" tradition within Islam assoicated with Salim Suwari and the Suwarian tradition.

    as a " person of the book " I can say that the most pacifist people I've ever met were Muslims, they are also some of my favourite people to have theological descusions with. I've had way worse experiences from Evangelical fundamentalists telling me I'm going at me about this rapture concept that the vast majority of Christians dont subscribe to. Muslims seem to have this ability to use such wonderfully grounded logic when they talk about God and I really enjoy " talking religion " with them ( name drop intended 👍🏻) 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿✝️🤝🏼☪️

      They who have ears to hear, let them hear:
      Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!
      I tell ye, truly, Jesus of Nazareth is the propitiation for the whole world's sins. He is the anointed one, for he is, Jesus Christ. God the Father has raised him from the dead; who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God! Angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
      Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: no one comes to the Father, but by him. They who believe and are baptized with the Holy Spirit shall be saved; but they who believe not shall be damned. For they who believe not on him, shall die in their sins!
      I tell ye now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father!

      It would be very wonderful if the people of the world would accept one another and live along side one another. Maybe just maybe there is just One Creator and it gives comfort and insight to different tribes in different ways. Love and acceptance should be the Law. For it is only you who faces whatever judgement you believe for yourself. There needs to be more vocal pacifists and peaceful people of all religions. Lest we shall see creation burn.

Your videos are so appeasing to the social and familial unease I sometimes feel. The present one being about a pacifist strand of Islam among West African Peoples is especially soothing - and very interesting. The fact that many, if not most West African Peoples speak french means Québec has a special connection with them, we have welcomed many immigrants from that area. I also find the visual depictions you use of the "Black Muslim educator" figure, the ones that look like drawings or paintings, somehow endearing. They make Salim Suwari and Ahmadou Bamba seem like gentle and warm persons. Cheers, friend.

    • @AfricanTvFilmaker
      @AfricanTvFilmaker ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Civitatuccillo It would be instructive to exchange the term "Slave" with "Serf", in medieval Africa a slave was essentially an economic status that maintained many social liberties. As a matter of fact, many African "Slaves" had climbed to very high social status while still being a "Slave". Also in many folk tales, Slaves were known to leave their Masters and later return to work at their own comfort. The institution of African slavery was inherently different from European "Chattle Slavery" which removed personhood and reduced the individual to the status of an animal.

That being said I do think that proselytizing is still wrong. It is better than violence because you're not physically hurting anyone, but you are still imposing yourself on people. Unless your religion is actually evil who somebody prays to is nobody's business. Also, you don't do good deeds so that you can convert people to your religion you do good deeds because it's the right thing to do and you care about people. When I was younger I heard stories of Suwari and Thierno Bocar. It brings me comfort today to understand why peace was important to promote and why the image of many religions are marred in our time as none of them bring peace in fact. I understand now that Islam is what it is based upon the disposition of the people who bring it, Court it, develop it and spread it. It is interesting to note that the French sponsored many African Muslims to go to Mecca, it is interesting that all the movements by Muslims Brotherhoods were allowed to be simply because they served the agenda of the colonial powers. Pacifism then benefits the rulers at the expense of the ruled.

And examining this a lot of the caliphs and the clerics around that time were viewing all of the jihad‘s, and the subsequent slave, reading as very negative so this was the thing that was motivating them to lean more towards pacifism, in the name of preservation

There’s another islamic scholar named Seydi Hadji Malick Sy, known as the khalif of Cheikhou Oumar, and one of the biggest figures of the Tijaniyya brotherhood that also chose the pacific Jihad to fight colonialism of the french. Now, another thing that is interesting to me, is once again, you see Africans take ideas that are not necessarily theirs and applying it in a fashion that is holistic to them, and not having Tatian for advantageous for outside groups to come in and dominate. John Zuma, in his book the legacy of Islam in tropical Africa Took the time to point out one of the reasons why the Arab merchants developed this enemies towards the ruling class that was there was because there was no way for them to own land but if the technicality here is becoming Muslim or knowing the Koran, then Africans with their own chronic schools have already accomplished that

      When you read the Quran, it specifically states the conduct towards people who they consider as idol worshipers. And never at any point did it say attack them for the sake of convergence it was always attack for the sake of self-defense. And I believe that they were talking about the people that they were struggling to get around that time which were the Abyssinians and the Egyptian’s because they were the only people in the area to fit the descriptions. Who cares about a idol peddler they care about the idol worshipers that were doing slavery on them.

    I think the spread of Islam needs to be examined from Dr. Zuma’s perspective. Now there was a dispensation. I didn’t want to talk about North Africa right now because we know how North Africa turned out. But as it became an African affair, they first came about in the form of religious experts and traders. And at the beginning, the chiefdoms were very accommodating to them but sooner or later, because of the way, Arabs interpreted their Scriptures it lead to conflict because again the points to where Muslims are not allowed to live as a guest so they had a motivating factor for them to seize power, but it was the African matriarchal system and kingship that prevented that from happening. So one of the things, Arabs thought that they could do was spread the religion, and spreading the religion, carry all the consequence of running the educational institution. And then the Arabs also had the advantage of trading with Arabia around that time, so at the same time, the Africans have the resources and the land, but the Arabs had the connections to trade to benefit off of those resources. No I’m not gonna sit here and pontificate Dr. Zuma’s book here but you have to understand that this is more of a failure of Arab culture when you talk about violence and Islam because when the Africans took it, they were the first people to bring about pacifism Mohammed himself did not bring about pacifism, but it was the African scholars and African kalif’s that did.

    Is there a religion or school of thought that has resonated most with you? I know that you focused on Islam academically, but that you mentioned not being convinced. I feel the same way, even though Islam somehow draws me to it more than any other religion (which also doesn't make sense, because Advaita Vedanta, Daoism, and some forms of Buddhism seem to be more logical and believable to me, personally). I enjoy reading the holy books of all religions to have a better understanding of the many beliefs and cultures of the world, and consider myself on an erratic path towards some kind of truth and meaning. While each holy book has pearls of wisdom, I always come across passages that I simply can not accept, as they have the distinct feel of being influenced and corrupted by man, not to mention the extra-scriptural dogma that attaches itself to most religions. Instead, I end up attempting to combine the similar wisdom and philosophies common in all religions into my own moral and spiritual framework. However, then I have no sense of community. Some days I ask myself if it's worth having that sense of community while not being fully convinced or committed. A deep part of me feels that it's wrong, but some days I still strongly consider it. I find it discouraging that I haven't found one that my heart and mind will fully accept, and I deeply envy those that can have true, full faith in a particular religion. It seems liberating and wonderful, and provides access a strong community. The struggle of an agnostic seeker is a difficult one. Thank you for all of your content.

    As a Muslim i want to say something regarding the two things you mentioned. You said before starting the war, Muslims would tell them to accept Islam and the other was to pay tax.
    I want to clarify that this is not the case as this was subjected to Prophet's life. The rule is part of "Itmam e Hujjat".
    Omar RA only gave these options to those lands where prophet had sent word of Islam earlier.
    No one now can place these two things in front of a society and start Jihad bil Saif (Jihad of Sword).
    Islam never forces itself onto someone. It offers understanding and one cannot be a Muslim when it's not through heart. Those two conditions were due to Itmam e Hujjat for prophet as all prophets had this rule before.

    the way you talk about the word jihad is heavily influenced by post-modern morality to the extent that you mention struggle in war as the last meaning for the wprd jihad when in reality it is the most common usage of the word,
    And also when you were explaining muslim beliefs regarding war you mention war in defending oneself and the concept of “just war” and “darul islam, darul kufr” but not talk that much about fighting the non-believers even if they don’t attack first, which all jurists of islam, from every traditional sect(sunni; hanafi, hanbali, shafi’ee, maliki and shia; Imami , zaydi , isma’eeli and mu’tazili) accept and consider as wajib,
    I mention this because i believe when talking or researching topics specially from other areas of the world or other cultures one should be conscious about his biases and try to remove them when talking about the topics,
    and your (or your sources) exact biases here were “war is harmful, harm is bad therefore war is bad unless really compulsory” , “religions are subjective beliefs whichs goal is to give meaning to ones life, raging war on basis of something subjective isn’t worth it therefore raging war on religious basis is immoral”
    now i’ve seen the sources you have used and non of them were direct works of the mentioned scholar or of his students or scholars that follow his way, instead they were studies done in universities (a western establishment) from westerns countries or countries that have been highly affected by colonialism (which nowadays is almost every country), why is this bad? as a person who have studied in traditional madrasas , and is from a traditional Qadri sufi lineage , I see most people who study mainly in these schools and universties to be highly affected by western thought and morality, even if they were more traditionalists in their views the ways they justify their traditional views are ways that only a brain affected by western thought and morality would find justifying, which kills the soul of islam or the specific tradition they are trying to hold on, therefore their understanding of sufism and sufi saints and jurists isn’t reliable,
    so it would’ve been really helpful if you used directs sources , and some of the things you mentioned just CANNOT be said by a muslim let alone a well known and respected jurist,
    and the other thing is you mentioned this like it contradicts the views held by other jurists regarding war with non believers, but i don’t think the two beliefs are contradictory, because the suwari tradition and other sufi tradition that is about peace mostly mention this peacful way as a way to convert people to islam, And the jurist ruling regarding offensive war is about making islam dominant, thats why you take jizya rather than forcibly converting non believers, as you can see both can be true at the same time, you can make islam dominant by war and have people comvert to islam by being a good trustworthy and peaceful man
    saying this, i really like your content and appreciate the research you do it really shows how much you’re dedicated, only hope the best things for you❤

    • @abdullahshahj7194
      @abdullahshahj7194 ปีที่แล้ว

      if anyone’s wondering why the statement “war is harmful, harm is bad therefore war is bad unless really compulsory” is wrong;
      it’s because the statement assumes that all harm is bad when that is not the case we find that the doctor sometimes harms patients in order to make them get better and we don’t consider that as immoral, we see bodybuilders tiring out their bodies (which is a type of harm) and we dont consider it to be immoral or bad, so mere harm can’t be moral or immoral, the context its put in makes it gain its moral judgement, and in the case of defensive war i think it’s clear why it’s not immoral but in the case of offensive war, it is not immoral unless the immoral war has no justification, so the justification that muslims have is that islam is the true word of god and islamic rules are the only just rules, therefore making islam dominant by raging an offensive war isn’t immoral
