- Autocar revisits the outrageous 730bhp Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and drives it flat out on some of Italy's best roads.

When Autocar was asked to spend a day driving the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in Italy, Steve Sutcliffe jumped on a plane and headed out on the twistiest tarmac he could find. With a 6.3-litre V12 engine producing 730bhp at 8,500rpm and then sending it to just the rear wheels, of course he turned the traction control off. Sit back, turn up your speakers and watch Maranello's Lamborghini Aventador rival at full chat.

10 years later and I’m still enjoying Steves video of the f12. I like that he actually drives the hell outta the cars. Chris Harris too
2023? Anybody? F12>812
Super fast☝⚡⚡
I really love how down to earth Steve is in these videos, for me that really makes him a good test driver. Cheers from Holland.
Was just about to write the same. Super chilled and straight to the point. No daft metaphors. Exactly what you want when looking for a review with the intention of maybe buying.
Steve Sutcliffe is really growing on me. Well presented and heavy footed in a controlled manner. Showed it to three of my mates individually and their reactions were speechless in the way Steve drove the car. :) well done Autocar and keep em' coming.
This guy is my favorite car reviewer 👍 "You don't get a limousine ride but you don't get a filling remover either " 😅😅
I think you're wrong when you say 'people want a manual gearbox because they think they can change gear faster'. I don't want a manual gearbox because I think I can shift shift faster than a double clutch semi-auto box; that would be ludicrous! I like driving a manual simply for the feel of being a bigger part of the driving. I'm not just here to stamp on pedals and do a bit of steering, I enjoy the technicality of a good manual gear change and I think it feels so much more satisfying than just flicking your fingers.
Disclaimer: I know 'why' manufacturers of cars that make lots of power give them flappy paddle boxes, it's perfectly logical. This is just my opinion.
Couldn't have said it better
Ben Dewse You're absolutely right. Mr. Sutcliffe just doesn't get it. I'll take a black 550 Maranello with a tan interior, please. It is the last great front-engined, rear-wheel-drive V12 Ferrari made, in my book. And it has the luscious classic Ferrari metal-gated manual gearbox as well. Yum!
Ben Dewse indeed Indeed I share your sentiments. All those astronomical horsepower numbers sell cars. Wealth buys a super car but it doesn’t buy driving skill.
"would I fancy a day in the F12...make sure you set a day aside for this"...he said someone asked!! Are you kidding! I would miss my own mothers funeral for this!
I very well might *cause* the funeral to have one for a month lol
@@jacobl6714 lol..good stuff👍
@@joshriver75 I love the 812, and unlike a lotta people I love the 599 as well especially with the handling pack (and different wheels ideally), but sweet lord the f12 is *italian muah sound where you put your fingertips together* I think it might be the best archetypal ferrari they've done since the 365
@@jacobl6714 Yes I agree. I love the 812. A bit more than the F12 personally. Im also quite fond of the 599. My love affair of Ferrari began with the 288GTO as a youngster.
If I had the means for an "affordable" Ferrari i would have to have a 355 even though they're maintenance nightmares.
But im 45 now and things aren't looking so good for that spot ive been saving in my garage.
Oh well..at least i still have my 1/18 diecast collection to depress me
nice onboard perspective. i'd like more of it, because from this perspective you can really judge how this car actually drives
Awesome demonstration... Must have been a totally addictive experience... The engine is an orchestra!
Okay the F12 is now my favorite Ferrari! It has unseated the 599! The engine sounds like a totally different animal than what it is and that DSG helps a lots with that. The performance of this thing only validates the FMR layout, and makes the Corvette and Viper make perfect sense. the F12 is those cars taken to "12", and having an idea how awesome "awesome" is makes looking forward to the C7 Z06 and ZR-1 and Viper ACR all the tastier, for me anyway.
He never stated he hated ferrari's cars. He only said he hated having to deal with an almost full on pitcrew for every aspect of testdriving their cars. As mentioned in the article he says: "it's cars are so good it doesn't need this shite"
The sound is just so amazing.
scared to take the ESC off? cause im seeing tons of diff lock lol
A masterpiece, really
Toyota wish the LFA looked this good. You have to see this live to appreciate how awesome it is. The LFA looks like a new model Supra in person.
I know that this is 7 years on...but if I see Ferrari and Steve Sutcliffe in the same video? I watch.
this is the most beautiful ferrari ever made.
F12. Nice car. Nice vid. But I'm not going to stop bugging Autocar about the following: Thank you for putting together the P1 v. 918 v. bike race, but you need to make a new video with a LaFerrari to complete the hybrid-hyper car trio compare, real world, and you have no excuses now because by watching other videos, I've done the homework, and I can now tell you exactly where to find one that's privately owned and up for a race so you don't have to hassle with Ferrari themselves.
Watching an EVO video about a Vmax200 event, I saw there was a LaFerrari taking part in the races. The guy's number plate is "43 MAT." So the guy is there in the UK, and I'm guessing you can find him based on his number plate. The guy is obviously up for racing his example, so there you go. You had that white 918 with the red decals, the P1, and now you have the means to re-run the race with a LaFerrari involved so we can finally see it happen, and get the real world numbers/results. But try to get a fresh P1 if possible. It looks like you were using that same super-deep purple P1 every automotive journalist drove the pants off, so it probably wasn't in peak condition for the race. Anyway, there you go. All the info you need. Now please, make it happen Autocar. Finally seeing the trio go head to head to head will garner you countless views. Please!
Oh, and about the F12 being the fasted front engine, rear wheel drive car: Were you speaking about production cars? If not, I'm pretty sure cars like the Shelby Daytona Coupe did speeds in the 240 range down the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans. And is this about quickness or outright top speed or both? Because I think the Mercedes McLaren SLR can run as fast as an F12. Maybe not. But anyway, again, please make the race happen. I can almost guarantee it will be your most watched video.
***** I did write to Autocar and even gave them the guy's plate number. Let's see what happens.
What a great car! Ferrari really is on top of its game.
This is a great video. Gives an insight into how quickly the F12 covers ground without too much power sliding.
458, California, F12 last ferraris designed by Pininfarina, still gorgeous as ever.
That shot at 0.40 is awesome!
I've never driven a Ferrari but I want to drive one so much, the praise this car gets is unbelievable!
Looks like me driving the CTS V through heavy NYC traffic on the way home from work ahah, you drive it like a video game, its scary. It littearly UNREAL.
Unbelievable sound!
Steve, absolutely amazing review! It makes me feel like im actually sitting in it Thank you Autocar
Look at his face when he talks about la Ferrari and the Power-to-Weight ratio - he really looks frightened, I just love it :-)
It really is a great car, but is it really louder than a 599 gto? A friend has one (in grey...) and I can't believe there can be any other car louder than the gto. Besides, the gto likes also to spit fire, that's priceless^^
What a car.... Ferrari build the best sportscars in the world, they are like a peice of art in every aspect. And very impressive engine! 730 Bhp 508 ft from a N/a engine!
"To all those people that say that you're not a sports car until you've got a manual gearbox, I would like to see them change gears as fast as this thing changes gear."
It's statements like that that demonstrate how ignorant and out of touch with enthusiasts these car journalists are. Every enthusiast will correctly argue that a slow, antiquated manual gearbox is infinitely more rewarding than any DCT will ever be. A DCT isn't fun or frustrating, it just is. A manual is its own experience.
One of the best autocar videos so far. Great job guys!
You could compare them, but it wouldn't be fair to either of the cars. The F12 is a RWD front engined car while the aventador is a AWD mid engined car. Both are awesome in their own right.
Drove behind one of these the other day…. Best 10 minutes of my life.
For me, the best price/performance options are cayman S, 458 or 599 HGTE. Alas whenever I've tried to rent the ferraris to give them a proper test I always get excuses on availability and lack of stock due to mechanical/repair problems....then they try and push porsche or R8. Don't get me wrong, Aston vantage/DBS are good and jag f type might be interesting, and xk/maserati have their place but Cayman S/458/599 are so much more focused. If I want a comfy cruiser I'll get a saloon.
its a REALLY good View when you put the camera behind your back like at 5:35 for exemple !!
Best review of the F12 that I have seen, very good job.
WOW that's the nicest ferrari engine I've ever heard..Haven't heard the La ferrari at high rpm, or flat out though:):):)
Sorry forgot to mention also Lotus is included that's worth noticing.
You can easily have a sports car without a manual gearbox. I am saying that as someone who ardently supports the continued use of manual transmissions in sports cars. It must be said that it's not a hooligans car without a manual gearbox. We're not all Steve Sutcliffe, and not all of us can catch a car and put it into a perfect drift. For that reason, a third pedal is needed in order to quickly stop power going to the rear wheels and possibly prevent a slide. Any motorcyclist can explain this.
Best metaphor of the month: filling-remover ride.
Best Autocar video ever.
I loved this video review!
That's the difference between italian super cars and the others. "They" are mental, "they" have a soul that comes out from passion for detail, history and excellence, from tech innovation, from craftsmanship tradiction.
P.S. I can't wait LaFerrari test!
Thankfully, Sutcliffe got this call! Brilliant... :)
i love this car in technic details and aesthetic style
0:21 fantastic shot. Looks like a Viper ( the snake not the car ).
The 575m was big news for Ferrari ten hears ago for breaking past 500hp in a production car. 10 years later, we have a car with 730hp. Does that mean we are only a decade away from seeing 1000hp production Ferraris?? I'm sure manufacturers will continue building faster cars, but can drivers keep up with the performance? There are more photos of crashed F12s this early in production than ever before.
Wonderful review - thank you so much! Fantastic driving, sir.
Chris W, Steve Sutcliffe is one of the most capable test drivers in the business, as evidenced by his incredible outing in an f1 car some time back when he was only a few tenths short of the team's own test driver.
Admittedly, this video isn't as spectacular Chris Harris"s but then this was taken on a bumpy open public road.
Honestly, if you must make criticism try not to showcase your own ignorance.
STILL isn't about the bloody tenths in the gearshift times, it's about the involvement and the feeling of a manual box!!!!!
Keep it on the road, Steve.
Your best video yet, Steve!
he was a bit naughty and said some things about ferrari and they no longer allow him at fiorano, in marenello, or anywhere near a factory car. thus the video of him tearing a 458 spider apart in rampant spite :)
Its just me or the right write is "Ferrari F12berlinetta"?
hey, there is a solid line on the tarmac !
we need roads like the in america.
Well, it does have about 100bhp more than the current ZR1... but the new C7 is due out soon and I'd be interested to see how it copes...
Just as I was thinking this has got to be a closed road, he's driving like a lunatic, and there's the oncoming traffic :D
laferrari is going to be effing insane!
I wonder why there is not a comparative test between the F12 and the Aventador ??
my dream car, hopefully my dad buys me when am 18
Hate to be the buzzkill, but you would enjoy the drive much more if you bought it with money that you earn. By then, you would have developed the sense of responsibility that is required to handle the car's incredible performance.
It's got a beast of an engine, but so damn sexy!! I want one ;)
Eh?
The Enzo had a 5999cc 660hp V12. This has a 6262cc 730hp V12, which is based on the engine in the FF which was new.
Please change those head lights
True this is ferrari. They might as well have two factories, one for customer cars and one for press cars. Well, then another couple for t-shirts and key chains.
I think its the most beautiful and classy ferrari
What's your point? It still doesn't have a gear lever and a clutch pedal now does it?
Best review ever of the F12 :)
Wish Chris Harris could still test ferraris :/ his review would be insane on the drifts
Haha, that was a great vid. I love how mind-blown he is
Respect for Chris Harris for telling the truth about Ferrari.
A very bold decision for a journalist.
He looks like he is working hard driving it on the mountain road.
he works for the DRIVE channel now.
This is just an amazing car. Great looks and awesome sounds. Spectacular.
now what would be really nice is a roadster version
Awesome!
Where to go next is this: To make a small V12 (think 2-2.5 litres) and a smaller simpler and lighter car for it. Small V12's are absolutely completely gone, and I see no reason why they shouldn't return. Especially in today's downsizing climate. Albeit not in the same line of thought.
Amazing review.. Not sure why exactly, but it was amazing
this car is good for me :) there is no better car in the world then the f12 Berni :)) Amizigh car and damm beatifulll

Lachezar Spasov The F12 is the only one who is beatiful the others look like space cars from MARS Alien cars :)
Be carful in a supercar, it can be your dead if you not used it :(
I agree with you :)
Lachezar Spasov thank you
Moni Poppaea Di Maria you're welcome :)
Opinions cannot be stupid or wrong, however much we may disagree with them. Ferrari were once great, but they've been on the back foot so much. The Miura was far greater than the catch-up 365BB. The Countach was much more desirable than the Testarossa. The 412 was a hopeless competitor to the Porsche 928. The F50 was hugely overshadowed by the McLaren F1 (ditto 458/12C). Now, the Corvette is the real driver's car, not this computerised geekfest (which McLaren will beat!). 7:19.63 is some POS...
Awesome review as always!
He sounds like clarckson :p
The car wasn't tested at the track for number crunching so chances are it's in total on-the-road condition. Track tweaks will almost certainly ruin it as a road car.
cant wait for clarksons review
One day i call Ferrari and ask for one day in F12 and the man sad no F...... way for sure Chris H. is with you. That is reason why chris every video have more than 100.000 views.
Stunning car, great test
i have a lightweight road-legal supercharged 911 race car, which is only geared to make 260k, and I just completed a 1000 mile road trip in it, and I have to say, that I do not need, or even want a road car faster than this.
I can't normally use the performance of the thing on the road at all, and I can't help think that the modern breed of supercars are a bit pointless and stupid, really.
How about making cars with smaller engines, and lighter, go quickly?
Ferrari banned him because he said that Ferrari is giving tuned up cars for journalists. They have more power and suspension is adapted to the track which they will be tested on.
Totally agree!
If there is a car faster than this one, it doesn't mean it is weakling
Great video!
I'm curious, don't you get problem with the law by driving like this on public roads?
Answer plase!
I was waiting for "Damn, this car looks just like the new Corvette! Copycat Italians!!" post.
Chris is in Drive channel in you tube
Dear god that looks like fun
I went to Ferrari Division when they wanted to join F1 in Singapore but they had other intentions including getting new sponsor Marlboro. As I dont believe in smoking cause I love cute babies and I am a family man, I went to Lamborghini in TH-cam but they had other intentions including making appearances in films. Hence I decided to take both these brands and come up with F1 Lotus team hence the opportunity to participate in F1 and films came about.
Does this GT drives better than an Aventador ?
Did someone say corvette stingray bahahahah get that piece out of here.lol
That article was quite overexaggerated though as other sources stated.
dat sounddddd
What an amazing car
looks like a corvette stingray from the front :p
Forza Ferrari!
