740BHP Ferrari F12 Review - More Than You Can Enjoy?

  • The Ferrari F12 is an astonishing piece of engineering. But, when the 24 year old 550 was already capable of breaking the speed limit in less than ten seconds, and reaching almost 200mph - how usable can the stupendously fast F12 be, and is it still fun?

The F12 is the only car I’ve driven that scared me so much I was glad when my laps were finished. I did a driver day at Dunsfold, hit 170 from Gambon to the tyres (you go the opposite way round the track) even with the TCS on full assist it was sliding around on the gentlest of throttle inputs. That car wanted me dead, I’m surprised it didn’t stab me through the heart when my laps were over. I had so much adrenaline I was shaking for a good 10 mins or so after I got out.

Yes, felt the same. A GT3 on cold Cup2s feels more planted than an F12. Outright hairy car. And so darty, too. Amazing for a 45-minute drive, but less sure about the ownership proposition.

I owned Porsche Cup Car... no ABS, no TC... and there I was pushing it to the limit, when in fact... I'd only reached MY LIMIT. Each time I unstrapped myself from that evil beautiful beast... I would literally look at it... and I felt as if it were MOCKING me. There was so much more that it had to offer.. and I didnt reach 15th of it's potential. Then there was the Cup Car whine. It's a glorious sounding car when you are full throttle... but when you fall short of the powerband... it is as if it's laughing at you... calling you a "sissy" for being scared. I ultimately sold that car bought a 997.1 GT3RS and what a blaaaassssst.
      My point..
I missed the adrenaline rush of driving the Cup Car, and the only reason I sold is was because you never have the seat time in such track only cars as you imagine you would when you purchase. So... I just bought an f12 2 months ago... and reading accounts like this...
OOOOOH BOYYYYYEEEEEEE... I CANT WAAAAAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON THAT STALLION (she's currently getting suspension lowering and exhaust upgrades).
SO THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS STORY... I SOOOOO LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING THAT FEELING AGAIN.

@@feelouxxx That's THE reason I'd never consider an F12. I want a car that's more civilized than that, and no, I don't mean a bade VW Golf. There are a number of very fast cars that don't try and kill you.

@Leaf Closson I agree - For example, on the F12's rear, the circular taillight clusters conclude the elegant lines that begin at the front of the car. The simple design allows the bodywork to shape itself at the rear nicely. And that's just one of many reasons why it's a looker!

Drove my friend's Ferrari FF recently, and that V12 is sheer lunacy. When you talk about usability, the time between stationary and license-losing disappears in the blink of an eye. The theatre is incredibl, but outside of Germany you can only utilise it for tiny periods at a time. But it's all worth it for bein able too roll the windows down in a tunnel, there's nothing quite like that Ferrari V12 roar. The F12 is without a doubt my endgame car

I've been toying with the idea of an F12 for a year or two. I love the looks and the sound but the performance is what bothers me. Ive been driving a 612 HGTC for 4 years and really, its has more performance than you can enjoy responsibilty. Like the 599, it also has that amazing ability to surprise you on a twisty B road (or my case an alpine mountain pass). My biggest concern about the F12 (apart from going to jail) is that it will ultimately be really frustrating to drive because its just too fast. Your summing up also reflects that too. I'm now actually thinking of going older, either a 550 or a 512TR. Something I can really drive properly and enjoy. Thanks for the videos. Really interesting to get this back to back perspective.

    • @paulthorpe766
      @paulthorpe766 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It is (I had a 612 too which has I'd say just adequate performance, 599 is the sweetspot with detuned Enzo lump) - F12 up to 3500 rpm is all intake roar so it goads you past that point to hear the rest of the engines fruits, and you look down and you doing 95 in third !

If I had the money and I was to go and buy one Ferrari, the F12 would be that Ferrari. Loved this!

Great review/series Man, I can't help but thinking that this car needs a fresh set of tyres. The game has changed big time since 2012/13.

After having had mine for just over 3 weeks, I have to say it can be driven like miss daisy.... not in least bit scary if you’ know what you’re doing and a lot more progressive than you would think. Brakes do take a bit of getting used to as you say. What helps is disconnecting the exhaust valve vacuum hoses.. means you hear that. V12 all the time.. also means you don’t have to go looking for that beautiful noise above 3.5k rpm.. it’s epic!

£150,000?! I can't afford one but that's one hell of a deal. It's almost certainly going to start increasing in value in the next few years.

Love the F12 - I like the idea you have to be prepared for it to kill you at all times as that is engaging. Nice to see the Cholmondeley estate and Castle, my Father was born and raised in Cholmondeley his mother my Gran worked for Lord Cholmondeley and lived in one of the gate houses.

Awesome week of videos. I’d have the F12 because it’s mental. Might it be worth getting the equivalent Maserati models and seeing if it’s worth going for the distant sister cars for the price drop? Obviously not the V12’s

Ask any Porsche driver if they've gone off-roading, backwards, and hit a tree.
Newer Porsches have nanny aids, but pre stability control.....

Have to agree on the braking...I found it to be the same even in the Pista (and everything in-between). I also had a wonderful time in the F12. I wish there was more sound in the cabin...was almost jealous of those hearing it outside, but still sounded amazing. Did you find the steering rack non-linearity a little...strange? It threw me off quite a bit, but couldn't measure if it was a good or bad thing. Great review!
