She did all the covers during her birthday session in one take, she also hand picked all the musicians. Yoyoka is a true professional and a beast on the drums.

YOYOKA's Mom: "YOYOKA honey, what do you want for your 12th Birthday?"
YOYOKA: "Hmmm....I want to create an awesome rock band with some of the best talent in Japan."
YOYOKA's Mom: "OK YOYO, we'll just call them up. Don't worry, they'll all come."
AND THEY DID! I truly believe that she thinks this is normal and just what everyone in the world does.

I always enjoy seeing the reaction of an adult drummer the first time they see a Yoyoka vid . It is mind blowing especially the vids of her at 7 and 8 years old. You can see the feel she has. To play the drums well you need to feel the music as well as have the physical skills to be that conduit. She has that going on so naturally it is incredible to watch.

I'm glad you mentioned how watching Yoyoka made you kind of emotional, 'cos I think that's an effect she has on a lot of us old rockers, partly because she plays with such emotion (because she truly loves the music) but also because it's great to see someone so young embrace tunes that go back to even before her parents were born. She's not just stuck in one groove however
and is equally at home playing absolutely contemporary stuff and everything in between.
Whilst she's best known for her authentic covers of classic Led Zeppelin songs, sounding uncannily like Bonzo she seems to
understand what made other drummers unique, check out her improvements to Ginger Baker's groove on Cream's Sunshine of your Love th-cam.com/video/pEBpq0K7Gog/w-d-xo.html or her tidying up Keith Moon on the Who's wonderful Getting in Tune th-cam.com/video/ee0p_RtWPyU/w-d-xo.html.
Of her more recent achievements one of my favourites has to be an improvised jam session with a young Japanese up and coming guitarist Ryunosuke Yamagishi recorded last summer where she demonstrated her ability to read the musical situation
on the hoof so to speak.th-cam.com/video/XBWizeA5yt8/w-d-xo.html
'Nuff said, keep up the good work.

I have watched Yoyoka on TH-cam for 4 years now. I have gone from amazement, to awe and now just tears. I think it is because I have been watching her for so long and seen her get better and better or I am just learning more and more from watching her playing. I just do not think she plays the drums anymore. She has become part of the instrument. She has already crossed the line between playing it technically correct and mastering the complete spirit that was behind the writing and performing of the song.

Well said sir! I agree with all that and especially the jam session with Ryunosuke. Would love to see them together in her band someday. Another of my favorites, no one talks about, is the runway show where she performs a rock drum solo (at age 8), then goes immediately into the 1937 Big Band hit "Sing, Sing, Sing". This embraces your comments in your first paragraph. Such a versatile young lady! Always love your reactions man! And thanks for playing what I, and others, suggested. We all knew you would love it. How could you not.
I'm not a drummers tooth pick, but my son is one hell of drummer, guitarist. bassist, and keyboard player. I've loved his 'garage bands' literally practicing in our garage since he was 15yo, over the years, so I know a bit about the way things go. He's actually a recording engineer now. But apart from that, there are 9 other songs from the 12th birthday session that you should really listen to. I'll go and flick you a few bills on paypal, & you decide which one it will cover. You can't go wrong with any of them. Cheers.

With her covers other drummer reactioners stated that she buries the track, and has made the very rare slight mistake, but here she’s not following a track, she is the track. There are many other 12 year old birthday jam covers. We’re all used to following covers, in one take, but with these 12 year old birthday sessions she gives these other fantastic musicians coverage too.

This was a great reaction and doing them together was a great idea. The musicians assembled for the session are indeed all world class and this was a bonafide supergroup. Two other musicians who were at the session but did not perform on "Burn" were sixteen-year-old Li-Sa-X on guitar and Yuichi Ikuzawa on vocals. Li-Sa-X was a child prodigy in her own right and is a fantastic guitarist. Seeing Li-Sa-X playing alongside Satsuma3042 (who is a monster guitarist) was really a treat. Yuichi Ikuzawa is also a fantastic singer and his performances of Free's "Wishing Well" and Deep Purple's "Mistreated" were to me simply awesome... but that's not to take away from any of the other performances including this one, they were all flat out awesome. Describing this ensemble as Japan's musical royalty sums it up quite nicely.

Great job sir!! You had mentioned in the first video about her using the double bass pedal. I'm sure you noticed in the second video, it was there, but she never touched it, until the very end for the final blast beats, or whatever you call them. Her left foot was being used solely for working the high hat. She is a master at the single foot, double stroke and even has a video lesson teaching us how she does it (at age 8). One of my favorite videos. So cute. She drops the sticks on the drum head so she can show us with her little hands how she does it.

Another fun fact. Yoyoka and her family were in the US this fall. When they were near Minneapolis, they went to Wave Potter's house (another reactor) and Yoyoka did a drum improv w/Wave and played Good Times Bad times together (Wave on guitar/bass). The Somas used Wave's home studio to practice for a gig the next day. They invited Wave to play guitar with them at the gig.

I think that she was a little reserved for her birthday due to the song selection and wanting it to go right. This is why she had her serious side on. No question that the adrenaline was flowing when she did the drum cover by herself. She was flawless either way, but maybe, she didn't want to trash any cymbals on her birthday. But the performance with her friends was as good as any studio session.
For sure, she is very special.

    • @byronbutterfield
      @byronbutterfield 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I doubt it was the song selection at all. Yes, she is a pro and will assure that her performance is right. Yoyoka has already played most of the songs in other videos. If you watch any of her live performances she is almost always more serious, not just here (she was more playful on her Ellen TV show appearances). I am glad you enjoy her work.

  • @gbulmer
    @gbulmer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Lovely reaction Bobby. Very good job sir. That was almost a 'triple shot' of _Burn_ with Ian Paice too! Yoyoka is so good on _Burn_ it's understandable why Drummerworld entered her into their 'Top 500 drummers' list. Further, she gets better at almost every performance. IIRC, you said you like rock, so maybe you'd enjoy a 'solo' vs 'band' of Grand Funk Railroad's "We're an American Band" 'solo' th-cam.com/video/Xc1N5gIelqs/w-d-xo.html 'live band' th-cam.com/video/innvxmVbv9Q/w-d-xo.html
Of course, it's only a suggestion. I don't expect you to do it. I don't have a concrete idea what might result. However, I wonder if doing reactions to an original and cover might be so clearly 'fair use' that it's worth trying? Practicing on something that's unlikely to get blocked, in order to learn what results, might be a low risk 'dry run'?
You created a great contrast between her 'at home' having fun, visibly radiating joy, and her professionalism, complemented with the highest possible standards of judgment. Ian Paice's reaction video is a gem.
I know I suggested doing both videos and reading her bio. However I imagine several people suggested those. In any case a good idea very well executed. Outstanding video Bobby.
My only idea to try to improve your reaction might be if you had had sticks and a practice pad, to demonstrate *slowly* the different types of roll you heard. That might make it even clearer.
Ian Paice is 'a real gent' (a British expression for gracious, generous, good humoured, kind, and hence very likeable) so I'd expect, at least, kind words. However, as you noticed and felt yourself, he was moved. His words came from the heart. His emotional reaction meant even more than his technical analysis. Yoyoka is already a great musician, with decades to improve (or do anything else her heart desires). Since then she's done a remote collaboration on 'Space Trucking' but that's behind a paywall.
Her '12 Birthday session' was recorded and released just before her 12th Birthday, so _strictly_ she was 11yo; a trifling detail. 😀 They came from different parts of Japan, and met for one day in the studio. After a brief rehearsal they recorded at least 10 songs. Every video is audio and multiple camera video from one continuous take. (AFAIK, we don't know how many takes each song took, but at 10 songs in a day, they are likely one or very few.)
The '12 Birthday' songs are near perfect reproduction of the original. I assume each song needed to be performed that way so they could practice in isolation. Yoyoka is 'driving the bus', so she hasn't much room to manoeuvre .
However, their cover of Deep Purple's 'Mistreated' th-cam.com/video/ghINDxGLcaY/w-d-xo.html is a slow bluesy rock ballad, so she has enough space (time!) to enrich it with her trademark ghost notes. Also, that is with a different lead singer with a remarkably well-suited voice.
I've watched Ian Paice's reaction several times. I can't detect the error he remarks on. I usually can hear errors even when other commenters say they can't. The fact that you didn't hear it is actually reassuring to me.🙂 So it is subtle. I need to try harder.
The contrast between Yoyoka's demeanour for her 'solo' covers and band covers is worth mentioning. I love watching Yoyoka in any situation. When she plays 'at home', both 'solo' or with people she knows well, she's visibly having lots of fun. Her tangible joy affects viewers.
Watching her play with other professional musicians, in a more serious environment, where everyones time is precious, is impressive. Then she's totally professional. She's respectful, focused, yet calm and relaxed, fully present in the moment, attentive to the song, and the whole band.
I guess her professionalism is partly why legendary professional musicians would meet up in a studio to play with her for a day during COVID-19 and 'stay home'. I'm sure they took precautions to be safe. However, IMO it shows their level of respect and friendship. She's a great Human Being! 👍

If there is one criticism I have about the Burn video from her 12th birthday, it's in the video editing. It is HER birthday yet all during this particular song the camera shots of Yoyoka are while she's simply keeping the beat or riding a cymbal and as soon as she is about to break into one of the many super-fast rolls, the camera view switches to one of the other musicians so you really never get to enjoy or appreciate those moments visually. Everyone in that band is amazing and top-notch but I really wanted to see those moments during this song. Watch her original cover of "Burn" and you'll "see" what I mean...the one that Ian Paice is watching...

One thing I noticed is that there are no reactions to your mentor. I know of several videos, so maybe I can find a Neil Pert video you have not seen?
How about 2008, playing Cottontail with the Buddy Rich Big Band and it has a nice little solo. Just remember it is not the size of the drum kit that matters, but the size of the drummer behind the kit.
I say that because Neil is missing most of his 5 kit set up.

You have to understand one thing about Yoyoka in Japan. She is royalty as well. The Japanese love her to death and are very protective of her.
If you liked the double reaction you may have the potential for more.
I suggested Junna playing Dragon Force, well the Dragon Force drummer reacted to Junna.
You said Good Time, Bad Times is your favorite Zep tune. Well Robert Plant reacted to that on Canadian television, the video is on youtube.
Finally there is a Yoyoka video called Onyx, which she performed live at age 7. That song was originally recorded by Senri Kawaguchi who is 24 now I believe.
I have to believe that Senri had some interaction with Yoyoka, even though I have no proof. I say this because she played beside Kanade Sato, who is 6 years her junior.
Anyways there is a Senri video of Onyx which you could watch first and then see Yoyoka kill it at 7 after seeing how the original is done.
Senri was the youngest person that Drummer World ever put in the 500 best drummers in the world, until they put Yoyoka in there at an even younger age.

Think of the talent that has been wasted by not starting out an instrument at 4 or 5 years old. The young brain can accomplish so much and build upon it in a short time, as shown by Yoyoka, and in Menuhin, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. The brain ages. A 2nd language should be started early in life too. Waiting until they're teenagers misses a lot, and becomes a non-starter for so many, who could have easily mastered it early in life.
