Prof. Snyder is brilliant. To Ukrainians who might be watching, I pray for your country and admire your incredible courage in the face of terror. I grew up in the Home of the Brave but Ukraine shows us what that really means. ❤

The country is also debating "freedom for". Who gets the freedom and who does not?

I love your show. I don't like the intro- woman/refirderator- not the positioning I would choose. How about a library. this segment is great!!

Awesome, the Atlantic cares about philosophy now. Pointing out that the west has been overly influenced by a negative conception of freedom is great, and it goes a long way toward understanding where modernity goes off the rails. But trying to play the philosophy game without doing any of the work of laying some sort of foundation in metaphysics is an empty exercise in rhetoric. Replacing “freedom from…” with “freedom to…” does have positive benefits of forcing us to engage our imaginative muscles, but in Snyder’s framing still leaves a giant blank that can be filled in by propagandists of the right and the left.

Great discussion, but remember Janis Joplin's words, "freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose".

People that lecture about freedom who've never known any form of suppression are problematic to me for many reason. It's like you're trying to sell me my unalienable right to personhood under the guise of some created myth.

The person who studies history and writes about Eastern Europe knows what suppression is. The person who actively participates in a very tangible way to achieve positive freedom in the US and in Europe, can explain and teach us all about what freedom is

ok Binder offer your lecture and views and experience on & about freedom; I grew up during Jim Crow America so for me much of what Snyder speaks of rings thoughtful, & true.
