Bengaluru's water crisis: Low Rainfall or Unplanned Infrastructure? What has caused the crisis?

  • Half of Bengaluru’s water comes from the Cauvery River. For the remaining half, the city depends on groundwater, which has fast depleted. But are the groundwater levels low due to failed rains last year, or because of over-extraction? Has this crisis been caused by climate change or rapid urbanisation? WION's Preksha Jain reports from Bengaluru.

Loot more rent from North Indians. Its a greed of South Indians to loot money in the name of rent. Good that Bengaluru and Hyderabad are facing this.

It's demand and supply. However, it's low wages for freshers that make things worst. Otherwise, everyone factors rent in salary.

As a resident of the city, the issue is a result of both. There was just no sufficient rainfall last year so the groundwater wouldn't have increased much from the previous year. Their has been no rainfall even in the cauvery basin so the supply of drinking water also has come down for those who depend on it, Our neighbouring state of Tamil nadu too has not been helpful in implementing the mekadatu project whose objective was for the same, to provide drinking water when their was a rainfall deficit season. Most of the lakes in the city were encroached and converted to layouts, grounds etc and the ones that remain have not been maintained over time and is covered with silt. Rainwater harvesting techniques had not been implemented by many though there is a government order for it. Most of the responsibility needs to be handled by the government but even the citizens need to be more responsible and conserve water as much as possible as we need to see water as a commodity and not as a resource anymore that is available in limited quantities and not available in plenty. It is time we bring in a change of mentality with changing times
