Rome's Escape-proof Mamertine Prison

  • The Tullianum is one of the oldest buildings in the forum. Incredibly well preserved, this ancient prison housed enemies of the state (including St. Peter, Vercingetorix and Jugurtha) from the monarchy to the empire.
Now known as the Mamertine Prison, What does the city's first prison tell us about Roman attitudes towards law, crime and punishment?

When the movie 'Ben Hur' came out my father took me to see it and the most horrifying scene was when they go deep down into the bowels of the Antonia Fortress - into darkness and sealed iron doors - to find Ben Hur's mother and sister who have been locked away without light or fresh air for years. All a bit improbable but it scared the crap out of me.

I understand what that made such an impression, the conditions of Roman prisons were quite horrific

You're absolutely right! Subjecting prisoners to forced labor IS inhumane! It's a good thing we don't do that anymore! In fact, I'm glad we didn't specifically carve out an exception to the amendment forbidding slavery to allow involuntary servitude as punishment for a crime! That would be willfully inhumane! Aha, ha, ha... ha. :(

Ehh try not committing crimes and it won’t be a problem. Nations waste a lot of money “rehabilitating” people that will just end up back in within 6 months.

@@T4G95 What I'm hearing is a couple of things. First, that you believe that criminals waive some portion of their human right to fair treatment after committing crimes. Second, that you're concerned with the money spent on rehabilitative treatment when recidivism is so common.
In both cases, I do not agree with your judgment. The first I can only defend with the 8th Amendment and the notion of proportionate response to criminality. Is it truly just, or even effective, to put anyone who commits crimes to forced labor? Even if they were convicted of a minor offense, or even innocent? To the second, I would point out that it is in fact punitive justice that has the higher cost and recidivism, and that countries that fully commit to rehabilitation see an impressively low amount of recidivism. America simply refuses to commit to that.

@@andrewphilos higher cost 😂 an axe is cheap and it can be resharpened multiple times. What costs more? 15 years of imprisonment or 1 axe and half an hour labour cost for the executioner? Hundreds of thousands of dollars spent attempting to rehabilitate people or about $20 for an axe and $100 labour… hmmm yeah i think the ancient way was a lot cheaper. Also laughable at you quoting your constitutional amendments like the entire world follows the laws of the united states.

@@T4G95 You're necro-ing a post where I made a reference to the Thirteenth Amendment, so I figured people would discuss under that context. Although I think most cultures have a rule against "cruel and unusual punishment" in whatever version of a constitution or common law they have.
I recognize your point regarding the immediate costs, but an execution is not as simple as just the moment of death, especially in a modern society. There are seen and unseen costs to these things, which I don't want to go into because you already said you think "cruel and unusual punishment" doesn't apply. But in the US, for example, a death penalty is actually MORE expensive on average than life in prison.

Ngl I'm pretty sure I could break out of it. Jump up through the hole while the guards are distracted, incapactitate the first one while he's surprised, then grab his weapon. Home free.
