It was not the Ostrogoths who deposed Romulus Augustulus, but rather Odoacer and his military clique (then the Ostrogoths deposed Odoacer on behalf of the Eastern Emperor). Anyway, I recently discovered this channel and I was very pleasantly surprised for how it briefly covers in detail so many aspects of the history of Rome without falling into the idealization that is sometimes made of this period. I encourage you to continue making video-essays about the period.
Glad you enjoyed! This is 1/2 of a two part series and we are aiming to add a third installment soon covering welfare programs during the empire’s golden age
It is fair to say that Innona is a watershed version of Ceres? In the way that Ceres provide food and protection (by the laws), and Innona only the food?
Early churches were by all accounts centers of aid for Christian and non-Christian alike. The pagan emperor Julian even bemoaned how Christians did a better job carrying for the pagan poor than pagans did.
I'm very glad I found this channel 1:08 reactionary as in what? as in EVIL? I'm supposed to believe this guy in particular was EVIL? don't just say things. I literally just praised this fucking place don't make me regret it. 10:25-10:50 what? of course it wasn't a "left wing" or "socialist" thing. I'm so shocked you bothered saying this at all instead of just uttering out some other modern adjective for evil.
A “Reactionary” is not an inherently evil person or a term to blame someone as evil, it is a term that refers to some individual or social group that stands firmly for the preservation of the Status Quo or wants to revert recent radical changes made to it, Sulla and the Optimates faction were reactionaries, as their goal was to preserve the patrician order stablished in the origins of the Roman Republic. Sulla went as far as basically use its power as Dictator to prescribe most of the wealthy romans aligned with the Populares faction and cancel the grain doll as both a punishment and a way to ensure the political dominance of the aristoctatic faction. On the other hand, I think it is important to make a clear separation of modern times topics and ancient/roman times topics, in the mass society we live on today it’s easy to make forced comparations between present and past topics, and, as ridicoulous as it may sound, the comparison between the roman “bread and circus” policy and “socialist” or welfare-state policies had been made by some economists and amateur historians. (I’m not an English native speaker, Sorry if I mispronounced something)
@@pol1656 I agree with you on present and past conflations. About the word reactionary, reason I complain about this word is because I have never ever seen it mean anything else but evil. Never.
@@TheAlison1456 Nowadays the term is mostly used when refering to a contemporary by progressive or Left-wing movements, so the term in that case is used with animosity, as that movements opose what “reactionarism” represents, with that said, the term represents a Political reality, and right-wing liberals (understanding liberal here as someone who supports parlamentary democracy and a liberal state) will prefer to call themselves liberal-conservatives or conservatives because they do not identify themselves with the term “reactionary”, mainly due to its defense of the political legacy of the French or American revolution, but some right-wing authoritarian, fascist or traditionalists movements do openly consider themselves as reactionary.
The word "reactionary" has a simple and straightforward technical meaning that accurately describes Sulla and the Optimates: 1) there were some recently new policies at the time 2) that they mobilized politically to reverse 3) and in the course of doing so they formed a whole political worldview based on recovering "the good old days" 4) which actually reflected a rose-tinted perspective on the past 5) so that these people which imagined themselves were faithful defenders of tradition were actually an innovative novelty and their behavior would have been unfamiliar to their own ancestors.
sulla was a shithead. who asked whether you regret praising this place or not? I don't think you have the intellectual capabilities to understand what you are listening to here. perhaps you should watch some more minecraft let's plays

From looks alone the Byzantine bread gets a 10/10
The Christian Romans should have tried to connect it to the Torah's Welfare system.
