    VIDEO MONETISED AGAIN!
Thanks all for the kind words of support.
After a long chat with TH-cam the video was reviewed and found to not be controversial. The Fall of the Roman Empire is acceptable! Very relieved.

Regarding this video being demonitized, it could be bc it's a collaboration. Google will only pay one party, typically the 'bigger' channel. 🤷‍♂️ Hope that you can sort it out.
      Love your work.

Are you reviewing your videos after you upload them to TH-cam? I don’t know how you are missing this, but the audio in every video you upload to TH-cam is far, far too quiet. The problem is wildly apparent in each of your videos and makes you channel unwatchable. I’m one video away from unsubscribing because it’s extremely difficult to hear what you are saying.
Right-click on this video and select “Stats for Nerds”. From there, you will see that TH-cam measures the audio in this video as 11.8 dB too quiet. 11.8 dB is HUGE. A 5 dB deficit is very noticeable, which means your video at almost 12 dB too quiet is beyond unacceptable. In order to hear what you are saying, I have to blast the volume on my device. “That’s not a big deal.”, you say? Well sure, until the next video on TH-cam plays and my ears are destroyed by the loud volume because the other creators know how to properly export their videos for TH-cam. You really, really, really need to address this export problem with your videos because they are unwatchable as they currently stand.
I don’t know what program you use to export video, but there is information out there for nearly every program that will help you achieve the proper export settings. For example, here’s a video about using Adobe Premiere: th-cam.com/video/GBH0BFvCLAA/w-d-xo.html
I beg you, please address this problem with your channels. Your content seems like it might be excellent, but any positive qualities of your videos is completely overridden by the inaudible narration. No one has any business subscribing to a channel where we cannot hear the videos.

I've just compared the volume of the three most recent videos from this channel to the volumes of the latest three videos I've viewed from my library, each of these three are from different channels and one of them is from a popular news outlet. I found that the difference in volume was
negligible with only the volume on the news channel being slightly higher than the other five videos.

Pete, many do history themed films, documentaries, indie shorts on every conceivable topic but you stand alone. Your manner, phrasing, passion for your material sets you apart and while I often wish you could pump one of these films out every week I know I'm talking rubbish. I retired from teaching (because of the lockdown) but when I did have classes I could never find a way to squeeze it all in about Rome, and oddly enough, the students always wanted more! This was worth the wait, as all your films are, there is no one like you in this field Pete Kelly!

Netflix doesn't deserve him. They would try to meddle with it and take a huge cut, pretending they contributed to its creation just because they own the distribution method. The future is independent cinema/documentaries like this, with no studio shoving their logo in our minds and stealing from artists.

Nice video. I always wondered why teachers at school would say that the roman empire ended in 476 when it would have been much better to say 1453, being the empire did not shutdown and get recreated as the Byzantine empire and the people called themselves Roman although they had lost the city of Rome. Maybe one could consider these last holdouts around the Black Sea.

Just imagine if there wasn't all the internal backstabbing/treachery within the Roman state, how much longer the Roman Empire would have lasted? One can make the sound argument that "the fall of Rome" was not from any external enemy, but rather from the enemies from within... As duscussed in this video, even in Rome's collapsed state/end times, there were still chances to repair it yet internal treachery prevented it. In my opinion of civilizations and their collapse, it's more often due to "the fall from within" rather than any one great seige or battle. Most are wrongly taught and or have the impression of the later. Rome did not fall when the Visagoths and Vandals sacked the city, Rome fell internally long before those events. To further put into perspective, the exact same thing is happening today in Europe and especially in USA. History my friends does repeat itself because "history" is the psychology and repeatative actions of man.

Thank you for pointing out the fallacy of Voltaire’s statement about the Holy Roman Empire; the institution of the emperor and concept of universal imperium meant that the emperor was viewed with great reverence as once of the most powerful monarchs in the world.
This was true even by the time of Voltaire, by which point, as he so crudely points out, the empire had become quite disunited - even at that stage the Habsburg Holy Roman emperors held enormous sway over international geopolitics, even if beginning their long, slow decline which ended in their deposition in 1918.

I still think Rome fell on the day Diocletian moved the military to the East and carved up the Empire into 4 during the crisis of the 3rd century. Galerius taxed the city of Rome after Diocletian promised the City of Rome that it would never be taxed. That exact moment in time shows that Rome was a new entity. I think Rome fell long before 476 and 1453.

Great overview in general and extremely entertaining, but I'm surprised Gemistos Plethon was not on this list. Surely he's a claimant to the title "last of the Romans" as he was the last great philosopher of the Greco-Roman tradition? Really see his writings and ideas as an important (arguably the most important) bridge between the Eastern Roman world and the Renaissance. He's very worthy of the title "last of the Romans".

I'm new/new-ish to the channel, having seen either a community post or having come across a video in the next suggested video so we sort of have to thank TH-cam for this. But knowing that this video was initially demonetised meant that someone either carelessly clicked a button or just thought it was just a simple war video with lots of gore and violence so definitely no thanks to TH-cam. Highly unfair to those who rely on TH-cam for income and having their videos be pushed less by the algorithm and having less exposure

It should be noted that the conquered Romans of the Ottoman Empire were and still are deemed the Rum Millet, the Roman Nation and the language they speak is still sometimes referred as Romaiki, not Helleniki, the official language of this minority in Constantinople, Istanbul. There are thus still Romans. The Ottomans also took on the title of Emperor of the Romans and the (tenth) Ecumenical Synod of 1484 was under their aegis, taking place in Constantinople and confirming the Western Latins as heretics, condemning the Robber Council of Florence-Ferrara of 1438-9 including confirming the 879 condemnation of the Filioque clause in the Creed at the 8th Ecumenical Council, also held in Constantinople.
It is well known that many Turks remain crypto-Orthodox and have, literally, underground catacomb services until this day and are (Eastern) Romans. I have met one. Her father was then the Turkish ambassador to Kazakhstan. She revealed this when I brought the subject up in a conversation. The fact that this was designated, in 1484, an Ecumenical Synod, simply means that the Ottoman Sultan of the day was one of the crypto-Orthodox and in fact a Roman Empire in every sense. The last Ottoman Sultan was deposed in 1924 though there remain claimants to this day. We have not yet had, therefore, the last Roman, though we are now back in a Republican era. And that´s before consideration of the Third Rome, Moscow and Muscovy, which overlaps and which has claimants to its throne vacant since 1917. The Russian Republic embraces the idea of being the Third Rome, as is shown in its emblems and insignia. The Vatican City also claims to be a continuously Roman territory with the Gregorian University still using Latin as the language of instruction, and most of its territory is still situated in Rome. The last Roman and last Roman ruler are both yet to come, therefore, whichever way you want to cut it.

It’s 100% correct that as American historian John Fiske said back in the 19th century, Rome crippled along in Europe as the Catholic ‘Holy Roman Empire’ until by the early 1800’s “it was neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire” - Voltaire. John Fiske literally considered the final nail-in-the-coffin for the ancient Roman system the same century he himself lived in as an academic in Boston! The Roman system sustained itself on life support through all the medieval kings and popes that slowly rebuilt civilization in the shadow that was the Roman Empire.

I think you have confused “Rome” with “the idea of Rome” in your “Rome rebranded” trope.
Rome the Empire most definitely collapsed. What lingered was the idea of Rome as a centralised power base that gave legitimacy to “Empire”.
This is antithetical to your point. Your suggestion that Roman societies stayed Roman but “rebranded” themselves as Celtic/Gaelic/Teutonic kingdoms is ridiculous.
Instead, Celtic/Gaelic/Teutonic feudal kingdoms pieced together an assumption of divine right to rule by linking themselves to the afterthought of “Empire” legitimacy that the Roman legacy gave them.

    • @gadget133
      @gadget133 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

@@timothysutton625 🤦🏻‍♂️ Incorrect, the Holy Roman Empire was what is now called Germany. And was founded by Charlemagne and named “the Holy Roman Empire” to legitimise his claim to be “Emperor” of the Western Empire. Rome itself was sacked by the Visigoths in 410 and that was the end of “Rome”… when that occurred, the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople (hint here… named after the Roman Emperor Constantine when he fled Rome) became the capital until it was finally lost to the Ottomans.
And wtf do you mean “Roman organisation”??? I mean Charlemagne founded the “Holy Roman Empire” in 800ad??? That’s 400 years later.
Sorry, but the cliche that “Rome rebranded” is demonstrably false… Rome collapsed, Europe fell into feudalism, 400 years later someone thought “I know, legitimise my claim for the title Emperor by calling it The Holy Roman Empire”…

This is impressively done! So detailed, thorough, and well-researched. It truly deserves huge appreciation from history buffs and accidental victims of the algorithm gods alike. I only wish there were a film that similarly covers what life was like for the actual Romans during this period. It's unfortunate that most of the history of Rome talks about the various battles and expansion campaigns- centering, of course, on men, and says nothing about how the lives of the Roman proletariat either declined or stayed the same as the empire went into its final slide.
Also, I wonder how long it will take for the Americans to realize their empire is ending too. Has it already ended and we just don't know it yet? Are we due several more decades of desperate attempts at militarism and land grabs? Or will we go out with a single, final event? Come to think of it, I don't know anything about what it was like for the British, the Spanish, and the Portuguese as their empires came to an end either. Maybe it was the true causes of the various civil wars and then the world wars... it's interesting to ponder. Drop some links if you have good content on the topic!
