    In this video I am looking at two UGREEN Nexode 100W USB A and USB C Power Adapters. The first power adapter is a CD226 PN 40737 and is a wall charger. The next is also a CD226 but has a PN 70869 and is a desktop charger. These are very different adapters for having the same model.

    You just convinced me to buy the Baseus 120W charger brick. This UGREEN 100W was my first and second choice, but I was hesitant and searched for some crucial details for fully testing. You just earn another subscriber for this. thanks!

      Yeah, Baseus seems to be trying for some reason. The 120w charger did have some issues (noise, peaks of current/power consumption during the idle state), the 100W charger fixed these issues (newer). Specifically, both the multiport options.

    Finally the one we've all been waiting for! This Ugreen was at the top of my list after so many glowing reviews from other tech channels. But I've now been convinced by your Baseus 100W review that that's the way to go.
    I have a background in power electronics and your concise explanations for power quality parameters are great for everyday consumers. I've binge watched all your charger videos back to the HyphenX. I and everyone else here appreciate your effort and expertise in this matter. Keep up the great work!

      You always have to take LTT with a grain of salt, he's the biggest tech TH-cam channel, so he makes the most money, and he does that through sponsorship slots, as well as monitization, and his merch sales of course. But Linus has been called out by the community many of times because of saying something utterly stupid or utterly wrong entirely. The TH-camrs you should be trusting right now to tell you the real story, is AllThingsInOnePlace, he's a trained PRO in the industry, knows his stuff, shows the data to back it up, and no sponsorship BS. 👍

      Thanks! Yeah, I was not impressed by this one (which is probably a bit obvious in the video, ha). The price is high while lacking official safety listings and not including features that others include at this price bracket. Baseus is an interesting company, I am not sure why they are pushing the trend but I am glad they are. It isn't all roses though. The 100W single port adapter has a problem... coming soon.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ha, yeah. I mean I wouldn't mind a sponsored video once in a while, this is an expensive hobby. I like LTT, I think they mostly do a great job but anyone doing this kind of thing eventually ends up in the T-Shirt business. I do a data heavy approach and present actual functions of samples as the primary presentation and I don't want to change that. I do want to build some kind of business out of this eventually, which unfortunately on TH-cam would mean taking some sponsors, offering the usual youtuber things...

    Thanks for granting my request to review these increasingly popular chargers. Oddly unlike your region, they appear to pass multiple safety tests in my specific region and are wildly cheaper than many 100W chargers. Maybe since they originated from China, they are more dedicated to the Asian market?

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, that is a great point. I've torn down one UGREEN adapter that has the US safety regulation and that was a well made device. I doubt UGREEN lowers the quality on other devices but they probably didn't get the mark since it is expensive and also takes significant time and a minor change may require an entire product redesign, or they are using an unlisted component which is a huge pain for manufacturers. Although for the price they are charging in the North American market they really should be able to afford the requisite marks or to pay for adding a component to get listed.

      On that 20W charger note, I’m sure UGREEN can do better, although personally I don’t see the value of the 20W as I believe that more and more people are having at least 2 devices or more so it makes sense to bet on larger chargers. Talking about larger chargers, I’ve noticed that UGREEN is the first brand putting out a 200W charger. I’d be really happy to see you tear it down but given the investment you’ve already done on the other chargers, the amount of potentially good candidates in the 100W category and that it’s still a “novelty” I don’t expect anyone to tear it down for the sake of information just yet. Keep up the good work. All the best.

    I have a 100W charger I got on an Amazon special for $30 about 2 months ago. It's ~$40 now so the value proposition is no longer there as you can get better stuff for not much more. Brand is Highsay. Passes a charge meter test for everything it said it was rated for which was surprising. I'm sure it's not great and the fact you can't find it anywhere except Amazon is concerning. Was waiting for this review, which solidified my choice of either the Baseus or Hyphen-X per your other benchmarked and detailed analysis.
    Really appreciate that you don't just skim through and read spec sheets like others do and give quantifiable data to inform your viewers.
    Not sure how difficult it would be to include a note about, however I've seen a lot of review comments on various 100W chargers complaining about reset loops when charging multiple devices. I'd imagine it comes down to the negotiation of voltage + amperage (total power delivered), but it's hard to tell if one handles this better than another. At minimum knowing that several split the top two banks separate from the bottom two help out since you at least reduce the potential impact to two devices fighting each other as they change throughout charge cycles.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I try and trip them up off camera for the various power ports with different usb modes. Generally, I haven’t had any issues. The Hyphen-X has preference on which port you use sometimes when charging lower power devices. It seems to think a low power device (1 watt or so) is a port that can be turned off sometimes. I used it for a while charging daily and once I figured out which port was which I never had any issues. the device immediately showed that charging wasn’t happening when it failed. I haven’t seen any go into a loop yet but I wouldn’t be surprised.

    Thank you for your videos, recently discovered your channel and find your reviews interesting. I have one question that I've not been able to find an answer to via Google (or have not been able to put the right search terms together to find).
    In your videos you show the AC sine wave and I believe total harmonic distortion measured on the AC side of the adapter. Generally I understand that adapter's graph closely following the AC supply sine wave is "good", and deviation from it in the form of peaks (or probably any other variation) is "bad." Or more generally higher THD is "bad."
    What I'm wondering is what kind of practical impact higher THD or variance in the sine waves may have on charging. Is this mostly a matter of impacting efficiency and lost power, or are there other possibly impacts that one might expect to see when this occurs in a power adapter's measurements.
    Hope that is clear.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is very clear. It is entirely related to efficiency. I am looking at that specifically because a charger is one thing: a power supply. Efficiency is probably the most important part of what it does. So, looking at it in a complex way is important when dealing with AC power. I know this is the low end of the power scale but it is still interesting.
      The only impact high AC-THD can have is through conducted emissions or early tripping of breakers if you have a lot of these devices, which for the average consumer probably isn't happening anytime soon. In general, devices are spread out enough throughout a house that a breaker wouldn't trip and you probably won't notice any ill effects device side. I actually can measure the effect, with moderately expensive lab equipment of a power supply plugged in somewhere else that is particularly noisy AC side.
      The output or DC side, I check for voltage stability and regulation, I need to get some ripple figures added in. Ripple can have more of an effect on charging. There is another regulator in the device being charged or power consuming device (hopefully) so ripple isn't so crucial as long as its not REALLY high (like volts instead of millivolts).

The GAN X Charger (Non-Desktop) Does not support Samsung's Super Fast Charging 2.0. It does not charge S22 Ultra more than 25 watts. But The Ugreen Desktop Charger supports Samsung Super fast Charging 2.0 and charges the S22 Ultra at almost 45 watts. Secondly, the effect is different when you add an iPad pro to the equation. Even when the first port is 65w and the second 45w super-fast charging turns off and the phone charges at 15 watts. Such information really helps for a purchase decision.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I try to cover a little of the port distribution (I usually pull the manufacturers data and check it with a bunch of decoys), it is the most confusing part of these multi-port power adapters. Some are certainly better than others at distribution of power. Some things like the Samsung 45W charging and other phones with faster charging rates are difficult to categorize. I need to get a bunch of those little protocol displays maybe. Always room for improvements in the videos.

      Power saving or performance is just a small item in the overall rating of the charger, if only relying on power saving to score good or bad charging is subjective and inaccurate. You should refer to the assessment of the charger similar to the "Chongdiantou" website or ChargerLAB on youtube, they going from the outside to the inside, from the charging standard, charging capacity to performance, temperature, voltage quality...

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have been thinking about it for a while now. The trouble with power banks is variability unit to unit and also how they change over time. So, one power bank may be great on the first few charges but what we really want to know is after 500 or 1000 charges does it still work! That takes a ton of time and requires a bit more automation than what I have now. I want to offer that high level of technology review backed up with numbers but it will likely take time. I point to a running vlog (nothing to do with this channel) who does an initial look at a shoe then does the official review after 50 miles, so maybe could follow that approach. Set up the adapters check for power outputs, then do a check after so many cycles later on. Sample b capacity after 100 charges, etc. Also, would have to do at least three of each model. Power adapters on the other hand are much more consistent. I've done checks of revisions and even different manufacturers of same models and they are within reasonable tolerances so a sample size of 1 is mostly enough.

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have tested a bunch of 60-65W adapters, I think 66W is just a marketing ploy. 65/66 is in the margin of error of the control devices. bt yeah, I will get some 66W devices in too. Long term is tough because it is largely going to come down to how those electrolytic capacitors get treated. If they get real hot they will not last as long (year versus years). There are a lot of small / lesser known brands on Amazon (Anker, Belkin, Apple, Samsung, etc. are all there too). Some seem okay, some are not not good. I think it would be near on impossible to rate them all and I think the MINIX is going to be the first rebadge on the channel.

My other options are a UGREEN UK 65W 2 Port GaN Charger, the Spigen ArcStation 45W with switchable plugs, and the Anker UK 735 GaNPrime 65W. Which would be the best out of the 4?

    • @AllThingsOnePlace

      The desktop version isn't bad in terms of power usage but the wall one isn't great because it lacks the power factor correction. The stats will actually be worse on 230V-50Hz power! The 65W adapters will all be quite poor performers. The 120W Anker GanPrime and 150W Anker GanPrime review will be out this Friday and those (although may be a bit oversized may be more tuned for general charging).
      UKCA is kind of like a safety listing, same as CE used to be for UK, but it is a self declaration so it isn't as useful. These are all fairly new and I have seen a few different rule sets coming out for products in this category. I'm far from the UKCA expert though.

    Although it is a 100W charger, if my windows laptop adapter is 135W... this cannot be used right? Let's say I have the adapter/converter cable for USB type C to my windows laptop adapter?

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, if your device can actively use 135 watts it will try to and these power adapters will not work. Even the larger power USB Power adapters won't work. The EPR mode increases voltage to 28 volts to get to 140 watts on one port which is likely not compatible with the laptop either. If you can power limit the input to 100 watts somehow then they will work. I know this is usually a control manufacturers don't provide.

    isn't the power distribution in this ones better than in baseus? also this has 3 usb-c ports while baseus has only 2. I am a data driven, but I lack the knowledge to know how much of a big deal are the differences you are showing here and if they actually are more important than for example the power distribution between the ports. I wonder if you have some video where you explain how important is every category you are checking, like the phase of the wave for example..

      No power adapter is perfect. I am trying to make less opinions and more only present the facts now so the decision can be made elsewhere. I do agree that I would like to see three USB C ports rather than two USB A ports as basically everything is supplied with a USB C cable now. In this case the actual efficiency is lower on the UGREEN so therefore it will have higher operating costs. Being the UGREEN is more expensive too... Yeah, the cost of electricity is subsidized so maybe $3 more per year in this case if you charge a phone and use a laptop everyday (essentially half device load). These companies are certainly all in the battle for the top and UGREEN is trying to make a quality product. The concern for me is the lack of US/Canada safety listings or any listing at all.

      Hmm. It should be able to charge. Does the cable have the Emark chip? Even if it doesn't it should still work but just won't charge at the full available power. The cable is the first thing I would try swapping out. Then I would try different ports on the charger (sometimes different ports have different functions). Other than that it should be perfectly capable of working with any PD 3.0 compatible charging device. Issue is SHOULD, who knows what isn't compatible. Also, it may work for me and not for you, this is the issue with having to pass data back and forth between the adapter and the computer. The computer can decide it doesn't charge from some power bricks. Kind of like the old days with Dell and HP laptop adapters putting chips in the chargers to make sure you couldn't use anyone else's chargers.

      @AllThingsOnePlace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, for the 100W class there are much better adapters out there. I think UGREEN does the work but they just don't bother with the labels. I think the big thing that gets missed with the safety listing is it makes sure manufacturers don't do the tests on product 'a' then change the product and still sell it as product 'a' but it is not. The safety listing has audits in place. TÜV SÜD is based out of Munich Germany and is just one of many so there are certainly safety listings in Europe. The primary things that you see though are the CE and now the UKCA mark which are self declarations. These are of limited value and usually too easy to fake. You can look up a company's safety certificate usually to see if a device has a listing. I like the UL and ETL approach since they put the number on the label, easier to find. Of course with no label at all you don't know which company database to even search!

    Hey thanks for testing this. Been using this charger (not the desktop ver) for my laptop usb c charging but it turns out my laptop prefers barrel charger as USB c charging doesnt allow bypass.
    Basically it uses power from battery while usb c charges the battery so its a constant charge and discharge which is unhealthy.
    To mitgate this, i use USB C barrel adapter and it works fine. I can control mostly the requirement power and as long as it don't hit the limit it seems to be fine. (The adapter it came with is 240w lol its a gaming laptop)
    Anyway, was wondering if you would know a way to make the laptop limit itself to 100w max CHARGING mode as to not trip it.
    Its fine when i use it as AC mode ( not charging and just giving juice to the laptop itself)
    But it seems to have issues charging when it is below 75% (it flickers from charting to discharging like a mad man). My theory is when the laptop is below 75%, it's default wattage requirement to charge is more than 100W causing it to trip like you rest at 108W? Charging from 75% to 100% have no issues. Maybe cause power requirement is low. AC mode on 75% or higher have no issues too..
    Not sure if I'm making sense though. Lol sorry laptop is Asus Zephyrus G14 2022 model. Its a thin and efficient gaming laptop and would really like to maximize GaN charging

      It makes sense and unfortunately I think you are stuck on that one. These laptops that use larger than USB C power requirements when powered on will have no choice but to pull from battery when needed. The USB PD 3.1 technology exists now so 240W can be send over that cable but it isn't in products yet.
      The only thing I can think of is under-volting the CPU and GPU to reduce the power consumption if the BIOS allows this but then you also lose performance and probably system stability.
      There are a few devices on the market that have both a barrel jack and USB C. I haven't checked any out yet.

      @@AllThingsOnePlace hey i did a bit of testing and it seems even if i lock the cpu and gpu to a certain power consumption, the laptop seems to have its own power requirement depending on what % it is on. (normally lower than 60% seems it wants to draw a lot regardless causing it to trip even if cpu and gpu not needing that much power).
      above 80% seems to have no issues, it seems 100W is sufficient, wattage indication shows 90+W when charging from 80% to 100%.
      Not sure how to tweak the brain of the laptop to say, hey, only 100W okay. lol
      Also another query
      1. Laptop has specs on the back to take in 20V/12A for 240W
      2. If i have a GaN charger now 100W it takes up 20V/5A for 100W with barrel adapter --- no issues besides the ones mentioned
      3. What if I use a GaN Charger with 140W? Looking at specs it is 20V/5A for 100W and the only reason it is 140W is because it is 28V/5A for 140W... now what happens if I use that with barrel adapter? I would assume it can only use 20V/5A for 100W maximum even though it is 140W GaN charger? Or you think it will be forced to use 28V?
      Thanks

    • @AllThingsOnePlace
      @AllThingsOnePlace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@grapegh0stx mmm, yeah. If the laptop wants more through that barrel jack and sees 20V, the laptop won't have the smarts of the USB system where it will negotiate power levels. That is too bad the power level can't be adjusted down a little. I have stayed with thin and light laptops so I haven't had this issue (they are slower though and forget games).
      As far as I know no one sells a 28V PD trigger cable yet, also this wouldn't work and could break things when the laptop gets more voltage than it wants. The current is always limited to 5A for usb cables since the wires are a bit thin. Basically, stepping up to a 140W charger isn't going to fix anything.

    Good thing i bought baseus than this.

      I have been really happy with the Baseus and Hyphen-X chargers. I've been using them for a while for everything from charging tiny camera batteries up to a laptop and everything is charged every day. My opinion is the efficiency standards are driving people to make these less quality power adapters since the regulation doesn't require power factor correction just efficiency between 25% and 100% output to be at a certain level.

      i was thinking of buying the ugreen 100watts but i only see its input ampere was only 2.3 amps compared to baseus at 2.5 amps thats what my final judge on buying the baseus i think more amps is good for a higher wattage charger 😅 what is your opinion on this i i also seen a gan charger from mcdodo its 100watts and its input is only at 1.5 amps compared to baseus 100watts its input is at 2.5 amps i wonder will an input amps affect the charging process of the mcdodo at 1.5amps only i have seen many gan charger at 150 watts only having 1.8 input ane 1.5 input ampere i guess this will affect the device when it is utilizing its maximum wattage??

      @@elhussin5687So, one thing I check is the input amps on these. Often the rating on the box is not tied to actual performance. They used to list V*A on product labels which made A LOT more sense. They have since dropped that and list maximum amps which as far as I can tell ties into absolutely nothing. It isn't peak amps (which electrically would make sense) or RMS amps which less valuable would also make some sense. It is a number they print on the box that may be a guide to tell you something but doesn't actually tell you anything. The Baseus (multiport 100W) adapter used far less than

      Waste of money mostly. They do work (but that is a pretty low bar). I was hoping UGREEN got the issues fixed with this new generation of chargers. Nope! The 20W charger from UGREEN is still good but I haven't been impressed by anything else.

    Hi. Bad power correction does this means it hurt our laptop battery?

      No, it's all about AC power usage, it is a complicated topic. I do have a longer video explaining some of this but yeah it's not generalized enough. Working on some better content to explain this.
