      I dont get why they didn't give us the rear screen mobility of the s1h and instead used the inferior flip out only screen. what's it cost like an extra 5$?

    • @bjarkisteinnpetursson9736
      @bjarkisteinnpetursson9736 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is there a way to reduce the latency down to acceptable levels? I've heard about turning off audio over HDMI but the reduction isn't enough. Would it help to reduce the output resolution? Is that even possible? Is it a hardware issue? If so, could it be fixed by replacing a component?

    • @bjarkisteinnpetursson9736
      @bjarkisteinnpetursson9736 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kevinforget549 The flip-out screen is great because it allows you to mount a V-lock battery on your rig without blocking it. You can then use the flip-out screen to navigate menus while you use an external monitor to film with. A 3-inch monitor is way too small to film with anyway. They just need to fix the HDMI latency issue.

    • @kevinforget549
      @kevinforget549 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bjarkisteinnpetursson9736 the only other way to further reduce latency is to increase framerate. you can film at 48 fps and do a 2:1 pulldown and it will look the same as if filmed at 24p.

    Many thanks for your detailed hands-on!
    I own the original S5 and recently bought a Lumix S5 II and S5 IIx. Unfortunately I had to return both units, because they had exactly the same audio issue:
    If you connect an external microphone via the jack audio input, there is a high frequency pulsating sound that doubles its frequency when you switch the frame rate from 25p to 50p. This annoying sound can only be heard very quietly, but it is disturbing in quiet passages during interviews, for example. And yes, it does not go away as soon as you hit record.
    This is a step by step guide to reproduce the problem:
    1. Set the camera to movie mode in a quiet room
    2. Connect an external microphone to the Mic-Port (if it is a battery powered device, you can leave it switched off)
    3. In the audio menu, set the „Sound Rec Gain Level“ to „Low“ (in „Standard“ the issue is less pronounced)
    4. Set the Audio Level to Zero or + dB to emphasize the issue
    5. Put your low impedance headphones on (e.g. EarPods) and note a pulsing high pitched interference sound
    6. Press the lens lock/unlock button to make the sound disappear for some seconds
    7. Toggle the Movie Recording Options from 25p to 50p to double the speed of the pulsing sound
    8. Switch the dial “Movie Mode“ to Manual "M“ to hear the sound change it’s frequency
    Please note: This interference do not occur using the onboard mics or the DMW-XLR1 unit.

      Me too. Now that Panasonic is starting to clear the autofocus hurdle, I feel like the slow readout is one of the last remaining obstacles. If it gets a faster readout, the S1H II would be very close to my dream hybrid camera. I would upgrade from my S1 ASAP.

    • @AlexDerrick_DP
      @AlexDerrick_DP ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@theshortlist global shutter cripples the dynamic range and also the color gamut. Sony has gotten around this by have incredibly fast readout speeds on the Venice 2 for example.
      But the S52 has a quick readout of 10ms in super35 mode, but double that 20ms in full frame. I’m not sure if they can get Venice 2 level readouts (3ms FF) in such a compact body.
      We have to keep waiting. But if you want maximum dynamic range and color gamut we are stuck with rolling shutter CMOS sensors 😫

    • @theshortlist
      @theshortlist ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlexDerrick_DP you are probably right, but years ago there was the war in digital backs style... CMOS, Dalsa, CCD... and my Leaf backs (22mp, and 33mp) were so much better in term of color compare to 50mp sensors with live view... nowadays i'm using Fuji GFX with live view, nice colors, long exposure ok... so, all is possible, just a matter of time i suppose...

    Very tempting. I shoot the old S5 into the Ninja V, so I already get Full Frame 5.9k RAW Prores 422 at 12 bit. The image is poetry. I shoot narrative film and don't use AF so while PD AF is a fabulous new offering from Panasonic, it does not affect me. The internal codecs and improved IBIS could provide some redundancy for the Ninja and the Ronan Gimbal and that is always welcome, so I am still deliberating. I started out on the old Panasonic DVX 100A, so what I already get out of the old S5 is already mind blowing. What I would really like to see is better handling of rolling shutter, (global shutter full frame???) but I am not complaining. I might have complained if I had bough the S5II and realized I had to pay extra fro RAW while the older model came with RAW on board, or that the S5IIX was going to arrive so soon after as a much better deal.

    Gerald Undone mentioned that the AF in the S5 II whilst using the HDMI lost some of its subject detection. Apparently, this is not a problem in the S5 IIX, but I'm wondering if Panasonic might fix the issue in the S5 II with the paid upgrade, or potentially in a firmware update. I'm eager to hear any information you guys might know. If the issue is fixed, I'd happily stick with my S5 II and a paid upgrade.

    I've noticed that panasonic cameras consistently have darker blacks on Prores files. Likely a little less DR. If you relook at the test shots for sharpness, the difference really wouldn't be that strong in the 6k h265 vs 5.8k prores if the 6k simply had contrast added to match. I don't believe the prores is actually much sharper looking at the font. Just darker.

    The big question I have is can you stream rtsp/rtmp locally to OBS on a laptop over ad hoc wifi from multiple s5iix's for easy wireless multicam monitoring with no extra hardware? Frankly the only thing added that seems useful is the streaming and the only thing it seems useful for would be using the wireless video feed on a local network.
    Streaming wired HDMI via phones or laptops and a $10 dongle is so trivial these days the streaming capabilities otherwise seem fairly pointless and the massive prores and intra formats seem like a somewhat poor fit with such an inexpensive camera with a fairly old sensor. Anyone with the budget to handle massive files will probably look to other cameras that don't record over a flimsy USB cable, and in practice the intra files never seem worth it for 4x larger files with no noticeable quality improvement in practice. Proresraw and braw both seem somewhat software-limited and praw is so huge and doesn't offer that much benefit for cameras that record with dynamic range and noise that fits quite well in a 10b log container anyway.

    You can get 8TB Gen4 SSD for as little as 170 USD (not a typo) now a days, grab an external case for around 20 USD and say bye to SD cards. Also, someone should release a RAID 1 version of the external enclosure for redundancy backup, professional filmmaker would very much like that.

      @ChadHutsebautfilms ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the a74 has a crop at 4k60 as well. In order for them to bring down the cost of the camera they need to use an affordable sensor. its a limitation of the sensors read out speed. The rolling shutter is about 21ms when recording 4k FF. When filming in 24fps each frame lasts for 41.664ms (Milliseconds) If were to film at 48fps each frame would last for 20.832ms. With a rolling shutter of over 21ms it is not possible for this sensor to film at high frame rates without a crop. There is nothing they can do about the 4k60 crop through firmware, however I do hope they are able to at least reduce the crop in 48/50fps modes to a 1.2X crop.

    Be careful with the All-intra recording. It doesn't always mean better quality, as the compression less efficient that long-GOP. I guess the All-i files will always be easier to read, but the quality of an H265 long-gop recording is way better than the one of a Prores All-i with the same bitrate.
