FYI: I make hot sauce and grow my own peppers. Young children are VERY sensitive to capsaicin and 30 minutes is generally the duration of the effects of peppers to the pallet, depending on the pepper and quantity. It is very important that you do not allow children to eat peppers without proper supervision. Kids touch their eyes and nose more often and can injure themselves easily. Be careful with peppers around children please.
Didn't know children was more sensitive to capsaicin. When he read that, the first thing that come to my mind was that it wasn't jalepeno, but probably cherry pepper or something else spicier than jalap (as they are strong... but not at that point). As a parent, when your kid want to "experiment", instead of say "yes", just control the experiment by giving them a little chunk of the pepper first! You are supposed to have an idea of the strenght of what they are about to eat : manage it!

Also in many states it is illegal to charge rent to a minor dependent under your care. Same as some places parents can not legally kick out their 18yr old if they are still attending highschool. Even if they did claim the income, which I doubt. Still probably illegal

Yep, my parents seem to just except that I *will* take care of them in old age because they "took care of you as a child". Like ok, I will take care of you just like you took care of me. The mom telling the daughter to drive 2 hours to clean her house versus asking the son that lives there because he’s too busy or will say no is the TEXTBOOK EXAMPLE of when people say “mothers raise their daughters and love their sons”. And instead of her flat-out denying it or reassuring her that that’s not the case she gets a sheepish grin, looks at ME and says “oh don’t listen to her!” then she freaking WINKS at me! I knew a mother who had her daughter get a job when she was 15. She wouldn’t drive her to it and took all of her money. The family didn’t need it, the mother went on spiritual retreats costing hundreds of dollars three or four times a year. The kid came to us and asked us if we could keep some of her money for her so that she could move out quickly when she turned 18. We did, and her grandmother gave her a car. She cut contact with her parents as soon as her brother was out of there.
I'm 36 currently & I was forced to work at age 14 in the summers. Then part time at 16. I willingly gave my first paycheck(at age 14) to my parents bc I knew we were struggling. But when I was 16, my dad stole at least 2 of my paychecks while I'd run away from home 😞 It's been 20 years & I'm still disgusted by that. Each paycheck was at least $100, too. I needed that money, smh. Needless to say I recently finally went no contact with my entire fam. I'm the scapegoat, always have been. 😒 So it's not hard to go NC tbh. For anyone reading this going through similar, there are actually FB groups for children of narcissistic parents & scapegoats. They helped me *a lot* when going through it. Ppl there are going through the same thing & give great support & advice. Highly recommend. ❤ Who would've thought anything good would come from FB, lol??
on a bit darker note, the DNR one is actually really chilling. parents usually have medical authority over their minor children in case of them falling into a coma or smth like that as long as they have custody of them. so the parent making extra sure their child will not live after an accident is extremely haunting to me. my mom had cancer and got notarized documents for me and my stepdad to decide together about her medical treatment if necessary. because we were already there, my stepdad and me also got documents about our own medical care so we can all decide for each other if anything happens. we all know exactly what the person needing the care would and would not want, yet we still got it in notarized writing just to be on the safe side legally. a parent trying to force their child to sign a DNR is extremely alarming and i don't feel like that child is safe under the care or custody of that parent.
@@creepergoboom2943 it's short for "do not rescuscitate", basically it is a legal document you can get if you don't want to be revived in case of an energency and i believe it also includes instructions for life support and its duration in case you go into a coma. oftentimes older people get DNRs because they feel like they're ready to go and they don't want to be revived because of the lasting damage they'd have to continue living with :)
I wouldn't sign a DNR for my hedgehog... my HEDGEHOG! She ended up not having to be sedated for her x-rays anyway because she's a chill girl, but they can have a bad reaction to the anesthesia.

My best friend's mom has recently told him (he's 19) that he has to pay her parenting fees because she's in debt and she would've paid all of her debts by now if she wasn't raising him. So, clearly, this type of insanity is more common amongst parents than it seems.

Yeah, my mom tried to hide my laptop, that i bought with my own money from me, when i was in college. This was after years of abuse, and so I saw red, and started trashing her room looking for it. then she arrived and started confronting me, if my father hadn't handed me my laptop and shoved me out of the room i'd likely have punched her. It was the only time i remember when i got actually, really angry, so remember folks, when patient people lose it, we lose it HARD.

Same thing with other things ordered thru a 3rd party delivered by fedex or ups. You'll just have to check), you can take that to usps, and they do NOT fuck around with that shit. It's a serious offence. Your mail is your mail, ONLY to be opened by YOU, unless you give someone else permission to do so. If someone else steals, opens, or tampers with your mail, it's a criminal offence, and they will press charges on your behalf and do whatever they can to ensure it can't continue

Her parents are conservative (her dads literally a priest for a Greek Orthodox Church which is apparently a particularly conservative branch) she’s genderflux and wanted a suit so she sent it to my house, some with stress fidgets, and she sent some more gothic/emo items to my house to wear while her parents aren’t around.
I’m known in my community as a safe person for kids to send stuff to, especially when it’s gender-affirming clothing, makeup, etc. As someone whose privacy did not exist while I lived with my parents, I feel for these kids so much. I encourage adults to be that safe adult in their community if you’re comfortable doing so. I do always have to worry that an angry parent will come for me.

That dad didn't steal $17k, he stole closer to $20k since he put op in debt by $2500. I'd definitely say go to the police if that's not returned, the dad screwed over his kid and should be held accountable for his actions.

Considering there was, at one point, 17k in there and the father pissed it all away, I'm also assuming he either worked for it or inherited it. Also he clearly has text proof that he didn't consent to the father taking this money and it's glaringly obvious to any reasonable adult that going from 17k saved up to 2.5k in debt isn't what he wanted. On the contrary, the father shows a consistent pattern of behaviour of theft and fraud for which written records (and apparently even corroborating testimony) exist. The best analogy I can think of is this: The kid lives with his parents and has a piggy bank in his room. Since the father owns the house, he legally has access to the room and everything within it, and decides to just plunder the piggy bank. A minor can't even sign a contract in the first place, so even if the kid was coerced into signing such an agreement, it would not be a valid contract.
I'm pretty sure the Do Not Ressuscitate order can only be signed by the family if the person in question is incapacitated. If he isn't, it's super illegal to do it behind his back XD
My aunt and uncle forced my grandma to fake her sister's testament. (Also illegal, they didn't care and didn't get caught) EDIt: It didn't count though as there was one, that had a later date (my grandma's sister had alzheimer's disease) and was at a "Notar" (the actual one)
I don't know how a DNR works with a third party. To get mine signed I only needed my signature and my dad's as witness. But that was for me. With my signature. Not, like, my dad and my aunt trying to do it without my knowledge. But you _can_ get a DNR order in your medical records without being incapacitated. I have one.

DNR and being in vegetable state are different no ? Coz if you have like your heart stopping, they won't bring you back but that can arrive in other situations than just being a vegetable. Ex : you have a chronic disease, you're not a vegetable, you can still ask for a DNR or not. Signing or forcing someone to sign a DNR just because you don't want to take care of someone if they can't take care of themselves seems very extreme. Like burning a house to take care of a mosquito.

My mother in law called my husband a few weeks ago at around 9pm that the lights are out and he has to go over to fix it. She refused to go out of her flat to check the fuses, becouse se was already in her payamas (so were we). Husband went over and surprise, it was a fuse, fixing it literally meant swithing it back on. This women is not so far from my mil in behaviur.
@@girl1213there is a big difference between lazy and actively malicious. If they were just lazy then they wouldn't ask others to do it and it just wouldn't get done, weaponizing it is something that I and other lazy people do not have the energy for.
I will assume that you haven’t encountered a manipulative and egotistical mother who may or may not have a personality disorder. I have a mother like that and that kind of weaponized language is a prime tool to try to get what they want. Especially the part where the other child is so much better and how they will let everyone know they are a victim.
honestly as a social worker I'd just go straight to the 'ok, I'm informing you now that I'm calling a professional because you're claiming you're a danger to yourself' if a family member tried to pull that kind of stunt with me. For the most part folks change their tune REALLY fast, especially if they're just trying it as a manipulation tactic.
Wouldn't it be better to just call the professional on the off chance that parents are both manipulative and suicidal/have self harm tendencies(happens quite often, unfortunately)
Guess my mom didn't trust me. She's extremely nosy so she opened my stuff all the time out of sheer boredom and always had something judgy to say about whatever I ordered
My dad won't even open a package that I ordered of dog food unless he asks me first (yes that's a bit extreme). It's totally nuts to open someone else's package just to see what's in it.

@@hellochildren3780 sadly this stuff didn't exist when I was dealing with my abusive father. At 13 I learned if he's going to smack me around then it's okay for me to smack him around. Eventually he stopped hitting me because I was hitting back and was much stronger than him. He still verbally abused me but let's be honest no man can out trash talk a woman.
Whenever a bigot family member calls me an abomination, I say, "Thanks! Normal is so basic!" Because it pisses them off even more when they know they can't offend you with their hate or "well meaning suggestions".

I also agree with the commenter who referred to it as possible schizophrenia. My friend's late mother and my other friend's brother have schizophrenia and rants about things not being reality are a regular occurrence. My friend would sleep with a knife while letting his brother stay over, because he would wake up and hear him outside his room rambling to himself about everyone being fake or aliens or demons and needing to kill them first before they get him. And he was letting him stay because their mom refused, she can't handle his schizophrenia and refuses to put herself in danger so my friend tried to help him but he was always at his wit's end.

Being childfree myself I can say yes some people have children just so that someone can look after them when they get old. How do I know this? Simple people are often asking me "whos going to take care of you when you're older?" When I mention that I dont want children .

I'm a trans man. When I came out, my grandma said she loves me and accepts me no matter what and she'll always do, and that everyone who truly loves me will embrace every part of me no matter what. She's 71 and does her best to use my pronouns and chosen name even if she accidentally slips up sometimes. She took me in when it became unsafe to live with my mother and now I'm living with her until I can save enough money to rent my own apartment. She even looked for a therapist who could get me an autism assessment when I told her I suspected some of my struggles might be because of that, and that I'd like to get treatment for my issues related to it. Maybe it's the fact she was never religious to begin with because she became an atheist as a teenager, and was kind of a hippie in her college years. Always the rebel lol But it's most probably because, even though she has her flaws like everyone else, she's just a good person in general, and I'm glad to have her in my life

The story about the jalapeno pepper reminded me of another much worse example of a parent letting their child do something unsafe because the kid reallly wanted to. Jessica Dubroff was a 7 year old girl who (allegedly) wanted to be a pilot. She lived in the US, where a person must be at least 16 years old to get a student pilot certificate, but was able to find a flight instructor. Her father encouraged her to attempt to fly a plane across the United States, which would make her the youngest person ever to complete this feat. On the second day of the attempt, after her dad and flight instructor decided to ignore warnings about the inclement weather, the plane crashed, killing Jessica, her flight instructor, and her father. Her mother defended allowing the child to fly, claiming that Jessica died "in a state of joy."
What pilot instructor would ignore weather warnings? That was your entire job! She may be working the planes controls, but you still needed to be responsible for the 1000 other jobs a pilot has to do, like planning a safe route that avoids bad weather.

The expectation of getting married and having kids is super toxic and harmful, but also you should probably take care of your kids even if you didn't want or mean to have them? The systematic dismantling of reproductive healthcare is incredibly fucked up for many reasons, this being just one of them, and it impacts the poor *far* more than the rich, which makes it double fucked up, but it's also kind of just what has to be done til there's some real change. So like, yeah, it sucks. It's fucked up. People are being heavily pressured into these situations even when they shouldn't or never wanted to be. But regardless of that, children do need to be cared for. Stuff like good government assistance for childcare, like day-cares and preschools and whatnot would be a great first step. But that's still a fight we're fighting. (In the US at least.) ...Though I must say it does feel hopeless sometimes... there's so many things to do and unless you're already in power there's just not enough time in the day to fight every fight.

The story of the religious grandma hit me. I am a cult survivor (Ex-jw) and I have been shunned by my entire family for being part of the lgbtq+ community. My grandparents are from a different church and also talk to me like that, I have limit my contact for my own mental health. It's not easy.
Hang in there; as someone who has had to go NC with a good chunk of my family (for different reasons), you're right that it's not easy but it is worth it. You deserve better.
My sister was the kid of a mega-church pastor who was married and so was my bisexual mom but they weren't married to each other so it's a case of double adultery. The mega-church pastor posted on facebook recently about how the LGBT lifestyle is anti-God etc. I replied that for the record, he'd made a baby with a bisexual woman and didn't seem to mind the LGBT thing then.

I've always been so angry that parents have complete 100% control over their childrens money, until they're old enough to do something about it. I am a victim of it myself at 2 separate occations. First, I lived with foster parents for 10 years. I found out that in all of those 10 years I was supposed to have recieved money, all which they stole (which is legal as they count as my guardian), which would have come out well over 100k. And later when I turned 18, I discovered that my mother had taken all of my life savings Parents or any form of legal guardian should not have full access to withdraw from their childs account! If the issue is children not being responsible enough to control their money, fine, lock the account until they're old enough, or put a limit on how much that can be withdrawn per week, but giving full access to another person should not be a thing, even if it's their parent
Most insane parent things are about control. Because they see their kids as a “thing” or property to be controlled rather than a person who needs guidance.
When I was a kid both of my parents told me that parents legally owned their kids until they were 18. Kids have no rights and no law would protect you, a kid is no better than a dog. (their words, not mine) I didn't learn otherwise until I moved in with other family at 13, and then I doubted I wasn't property for a long time. That type of control and obsession can really harm a kid.

I'm so freaking happy that My bank automatically revokes any and all parental rights from your account the second you turn 18. While my mom didn't place a parenting fee she was incredibly controlling and would call me every time she saw a charge on my account and ask if it was necessary to buy. She was in absolute shock when she saw that my account was already gone from her portal as she checked it before going to sleep. Thing is she has no reason to be like this, we weren't struggling financially, I'm quite frugal & don't spend unecessarily, I've always been an introvert and on top of all that I'm very paranoid about taking risks. I have literally never done anything to motivate this behavior but she's always acted like if I do anything that requires independent thought I'll "go rogue", I couldn't even buy my own clothes unsupervised until I was 20. It's freaking exhausting.
She probably just wanted to make sure that you’re financially responsible and not doing drugs or something. It sounds like she’s coming from a place of genuine concern, which is more than can be said about a lot of people’s upbringing.

My mom has always been an extreme helicopter parent, a classic Karen if you will, and has always acted as if nothing I did was ever good enough and no matter how well behaved I was or how good my grades were or how well I was doing in any activity that I was never good enough. She believed that if she took her eyes off me for a second then I'd become a delinquent. She was also extremely EXTREMELY religious so I was also never good enough on that front either (bonus points for starting puberty early and quickly developing a figure that overtook hers, therefore making me a harlot... obviously) and she constantly said I'd go to hell for this or that. I know that her upbringing was extremely messed up just from the "fun stories" she's told me and she always tells me that I'm lucky I wasn't raised by my grandparents (which I am) but she doesn't see how she's repeating the cycle just with modern twists. Not once has she ever apologized for anything, even when I've come up to her and explained how her actions hurt me as a teen and then as an adult, she's always turned it around on me. Everything that I've ever done is wrong and is an eternal sin, and everything that she's done wrong is also my fault. I'm tired of accommodating and tired of being her emotional punching bag for her childhood trauma that she refuses to believe even exists because mental illness is the devil's work. Believe me I've wanted nothing more all my life than for my mom's actions to be from nothing more than genuine concern but the truth is that she's just too much of a coward to admit that she messed up and that she has problems that should've been sorted out way before even thinking about children. I was the first thing in my mom's life that she had full control over. The first person to completely depended on, trusted & loved her unconditionally and she got so addicted on her newfound power that she forgot that I was a human too. I was nothing but a doll to her that she could use to live vicariously though, and she hated nothing more than my freedom ruining her delusion. Dolls are perfect but of course I'm only human, I have never, am never and will never be perfect so this whole game was pointless & rigged from the start. I will never be able to fulfill her wish because the problem is within her and that's something no amount of my love and effort can fix if she refuses to acknowledge the source of the problem. It's taken me this long but I'm done trying to put out fires every time she dowses this bridge in gasoline, there's nothing left to save and I'm no longer gonna waste my efforts on someone who doesn't even wanna help themself.

My parents were good about stuff like that and I never had to deal with that exact thing (Thank the good Lord), but I have had to deal with a living situation where I had to account for how spent my time (I was an adult at the, BTW). @@101falcon well you are certainly coming out of this emotionally abusive situation very self-aware I applaud you for that because honestly it takes people hundreds of hours of therapy to put down what you did about their upbringing if they can even admit it in the first place. I was the same, I logically understood my abuse so well that i got fooled into thinking it didn't affect me as badly as other people but that's a lie trauma affects us all. I hope you are able to seek therapy if you haven't already because you can't get the time before therapy back for me that was 7 years and most of my 20's.

I was just about to post this! I learned about this way back in high school after I had a variation of it. Whenever I had a severe panic attack, especially at night when visibility was low, I would become convinced that the people around me aka mom, boyfriend, friends, etc. had all been replaced by inposters. It would go away once I calmed down, and I haven't had it in many years, but I can still vividly feel the terror I felt. Its one of those experiences that affects the very core of your being. I truely hope I never experience it again!!
There needs to be a long list of things you should know before being allowed to be a parent. Things like, what an allergic reaction looks like, how to not steal money from your kids, your underage kids don't owe you for looking after them, and how to clean your own damn house!
Of all the roles in society that require licenses and extensive training, parenting should be #1. The potential harm poor parenting can cause is greater than the potential harm pretty much any other societal role can cause.

I can't express how glad I am that many young people have this resource. Whatever you grow up with seems normal if you're not shown/taught otherwise. People think books, movies, etc tell what's acceptable, but they're woefully insufficient. Unless it's directly addressed, we don't naturally make the connection. It's not as if we can extrapolate what's not psychologically healthy from seeing what IS. Seeing an unhealthy situation which mirrors our own & observing negative reactions of those around us can be quite jarring. We can protect ourselves through denial, rationalizing, etc. This was not available to previous generations. The amount of therapy & access to it was not available. The knowledge we have wasn't. The acceptance to seek assistance wasn't. The resources weren't. The solidarity wasn't. It makes me want to cry when I think of the difference it could have made in so many lives & how wonderful it is that there's hope for so many...& that we'll have fewer damaged people perpetuating damaging behavior. Sorry...this is an essay! I'm just so glad when I hear someone's escaping a bad situation!!! Congratulations to everyone breaking free & able to be happy!!! ☮
As a paramedic PLEASE decide in advance what kind of treatment you want or dont want if you suddently come in a situation where you arent able to decide anymore. We have a almost daily struggle with relatives, that dont know the will of the patient and it should always be the patients will that is enforced, not the one of emotional relatives. Here in Germany we have the "Patientenverfügung" (advance directive), a form where one decides exactly what parts of the treatement he wishes (DNR/DNI/external ventilation/pain-management etc.pp.). This often is crutial anf helps a lot
Advance directive exists in the US too, it's just that not a lot of people know about it. Everyone knows what a will is but don't realize that there's something for when they're still living.

I bit my nails from a VERY young age, like bitten to the quick, skin around fingers picked & bitten. I got frequent infections & my fingers bled. My mum tried everything to stop me, all the stuff you can buy to make a bitter taste, but she used stuff to physically sting & burn to ”teach me a lesson”. She even tried when I was very little to tie gloves onto my hands, or tie my hands so they couldn’t reach my mouth. Then she just resorted to hitting me or throwing what she could reach at me (this once included a lamp). This was not the only thing she did, but she hated that she couldn’t control my behaviour. One day a friend asked about my nails, cos they were long & gorgeous... I had to show her that they were in fact real... she said how the hell did you stop biting your nails in your 40s, I just shrugged & said “well, mum died...” she nodded, chuckled (very old friend, she knew mum & had seen her public & private faces) My friend said... “yeah, that makes total sense...” Turns out my nail bitting was a stress response to her!
Parents should pay fees for emotional trauma. In my case, emotional neglect and ignoring the obvious signs of physical abuse at school. They barely noticed when I came home with a tooth knocked out by the jocks. They just didnt care as long as it didnt inconvenience them.
This subreddit has made me very grateful that I cut off all contact with my bio dad and his family. They constantly stole from me and emotionally and physically abused me or neglected me when i lived with them. I live with my mom and my step dad(who has been more of my dad for me my whole life than my birth father) and I'm finally getting therapy for what happened in my childhood(I'm 22 yrs old). I wish luck for everyone who has been in similar situations :)

@@artemisa1523 I found a reddit story about a man who was in a happy marriage and acted normal only to be hit with schizophrenia basically overnight, accusing his horrified wife of betraying him (i don't remember if cheating was specifically mentioned), calling her a garbage person, and even throwing his wedding ring in the trash. The wife had no idea what was going on. This is coming from someone with a diagnosed mental disorder (ADHD and anxiety in my case), mental illnesses are freaking scary, both to the sufferer and the people around them - it's why I fell in love with the psychological horror genre of video games.

There's a game based on having dementia/Alzheimer's disease as well as a musical composition that represents a descent from having full memory to having everything around you cease making logical sense. Both are highly disturbing, the first is sad and terrifying without a single jump scare.
My mother repeatedly called me while I was at work (I work 12 hour shifts as a nursing assistant). She left a message saying she would have to "do something" as I was not answering. I told her if she kept on calling then I would block her. She called me a lot of names and told me I'm not allowed to put restrictions on her and I have to answer her calls no matter what I am doing, including when I am at work. She continued calling so all of her numbers are now blocked. As she can't call me she's now writing letters and sending them to my house.
TC jr was sick a few weeks ago so I sat up all night in their room while they slept on and off. At one point they said "Sorry Dad, you didn't sign up for this." Yes I did, I signed up for all of it, the good stuff, the bad stuff, all of it. I literally don't understand any parent who feels differently. Sometimes it's hard as a single dad, but when your kid gives you a Best Mum mug to go with the Best Dad mug you feel you might be doing OK.
that homophobic grandma gives me flashbacks to a conversation I had with my dad that made me want to bash my head into a wall. We were talking about the whole issue with bakeries who think they should be legally allowed to discriminate against lgbtq+ marriages and I was making the commonly brought up point about the bible also considering divorce a sin and none of the bakeries seem to be up in arms about refusing to make wedding cakes for marriages that are not the first marriage of either of the parties involved and my dad goes "but divorces is a *forgivable* sin!" If they actually read the Bible they would know that sexual sin is a sin you commit against yourself (meaning the consequences of your actions are on you),not god, so it isn’t punished by god like the others.
Even if we assume that Bible says that homosexuality is a sin (which some believers claim), it would still be a forgivable sin: Matthew 12:31, “Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.”

I told her I was currently in a wheelchair and she never asked me why or for more information and told me I could move into the shed that I would need to repair myself if I cleaned her house everyday. I physically couldn't have reached that shed in my wheelchair

Me too. I'm in my 20s and my parents let me stay home (I'm disabled so living on my own isn't feasible right now). They don't charge rent as long as I go to collage, are so understanding and amazing about my limitations and care needs, and have been my rock through living through very suddenly losing my mobility and random new symptoms croping up every year. I'd honestly be dead without them. Ironically, they lived through insane parents like the ones on this subreddit. They really broke the cycle

Okay so btw for anyone who has parents who snoop in your mail. It IS federally illegal in the US. They can be arrested for this. If you can in a calm tone say 'I don't want to but if you steal my mail and open it I will have to go to the police about it' getting them texting the evidence that they did is also easy proof. My parents won't open mine both out of respect, but even though I gave them permission to throw away spam mail sent to me they refuse as it is illegal for them to do so.
That's true if the "child" is an adult. If instead the child is underage then the parent(s) have every right to open the child's mail. Edit: Maybe not "every" right, I guess it can be morally questionable in some cases. But they do at least have the legal right to do it.

FYI: I make hot sauce and grow my own peppers. Young children are VERY sensitive to capsaicin and 30 minutes is generally the duration of the effects of peppers to the pallet, depending on the pepper and quantity. It is very important that you do not allow children to eat peppers without proper supervision. Kids touch their eyes and nose more often and can injure themselves easily. Be careful with peppers around children please.
Didn't know children was more sensitive to capsaicin. When he read that, the first thing that come to my mind was that it wasn't jalepeno, but probably cherry pepper or something else spicier than jalap (as they are strong... but not at that point). As a parent, when your kid want to "experiment", instead of say "yes", just control the experiment by giving them a little chunk of the pepper first! You are supposed to have an idea of the strenght of what they are about to eat : manage it!

Yep, my parents seem to just except that I *will* take care of them in old age because they "took care of you as a child". Like ok, I will take care of you just like you took care of me. Parents are not martyrs. They made a choice to have a child, they need to deal with it.
This, plus actual martyrs don't complain about getting nothing/not in enough in return for their sacrifice. And that's not just because they're dead, but because they didn't do it to get something back in the first place. They did it to support the cause, for what they saw as the greater good!

The mom telling the daughter to drive 2 hours to clean her house versus asking the son that lives there because he’s too busy or will say no is the TEXTBOOK EXAMPLE of when people say “mothers raise their daughters and love their sons”. It’s gross and something I and many other women have experienced in our mother-daughter relationships. I have 3 daughters and I’m ending that curse with my kids.

I knew a mother who had her daughter get a job when she was 15. She wouldn’t drive her to it and took all of her money. The family didn’t need it, the mother went on spiritual retreats costing hundreds of dollars three or four times a year. The kid came to us and asked us if we could keep some of her money for her so that she could move out quickly when she turned 18. We did, and her grandmother gave her a car. She cut contact with her parents as soon as her brother was out of there.
I'm glad going no contact with horrible parents is becoming more normalized.

I'm 36 currently & I was forced to work at age 14 in the summers. Then part time at 16. I willingly gave my first paycheck(at age 14) to my parents bc I knew we were struggling. But when I was 16, my dad stole at least 2 of my paychecks while I'd run away from home 😞 It's been 20 years & I'm still disgusted by that. Each paycheck was at least $100, too. I needed that money, smh.
Needless to say I recently finally went no contact with my entire fam. I'm the scapegoat, always have been. 😒 So it's not hard to go NC tbh.
For anyone reading this going through similar, there are actually FB groups for children of narcissistic parents & scapegoats. They helped me *a lot* when going through it. Ppl there are going through the same thing & give great support & advice. Highly recommend. ❤ Who would've thought anything good would come from FB, lol??

on a bit darker note, the DNR one is actually really chilling. parents usually have medical authority over their minor children in case of them falling into a coma or smth like that as long as they have custody of them. so the parent making extra sure their child will not live after an accident is extremely haunting to me. my mom had cancer and got notarized documents for me and my stepdad to decide together about her medical treatment if necessary. because we were already there, my stepdad and me also got documents about our own medical care so we can all decide for each other if anything happens. we all know exactly what the person needing the care would and would not want, yet we still got it in notarized writing just to be on the safe side legally. a parent trying to force their child to sign a DNR is extremely alarming and i don't feel like that child is safe under the care or custody of that parent.

@@creepergoboom2943 it's short for "do not rescuscitate", basically it is a legal document you can get if you don't want to be revived in case of an energency and i believe it also includes instructions for life support and its duration in case you go into a coma. oftentimes older people get DNRs because they feel like they're ready to go and they don't want to be revived because of the lasting damage they'd have to continue living with :)

My best friend's mom has recently told him (he's 19) that he has to pay her parenting fees because she's in debt and she would've paid all of her debts by now if she wasn't raising him. So, clearly, this type of insanity is more common amongst parents than it seems.

This was after years of abuse, and so I saw red, and started trashing her room looking for it.
then she arrived and started confronting me, if my father hadn't handed me my laptop and shoved me out of the room i'd likely have punched her.
It was the only time i remember when i got actually, really angry, so remember folks, when patient people lose it, we lose it HARD.

That AND/OR if you live in the US and have proof like this of someone else opening and tampering with YOUR MAIL, and it was sent through the USPS at any point (amazon stuff, for instance, may be sent partially thru usps, and then delivered by an amazon driver, or it may just be amazon. Same thing with other things ordered thru a 3rd party delivered by fedex or ups. You'll just have to check), you can take that to usps, and they do NOT fuck around with that shit. It's a serious offence. Your mail is your mail, ONLY to be opened by YOU, unless you give someone else permission to do so. If someone else steals, opens, or tampers with your mail, it's a criminal offence, and they will press charges on your behalf and do whatever they can to ensure it can't continue
I’m the “send mail to” friend for my gf. Her parents are conservative (her dads literally a priest for a Greek Orthodox Church which is apparently a particularly conservative branch) she’s genderflux and wanted a suit so she sent it to my house, some with stress fidgets, and she sent some more gothic/emo items to my house to wear while her parents aren’t around.
I’m known in my community as a safe person for kids to send stuff to, especially when it’s gender-affirming clothing, makeup, etc. As someone whose privacy did not exist while I lived with my parents, I feel for these kids so much. I encourage adults to be that safe adult in their community if you’re comfortable doing so. I do always have to worry that an angry parent will come for me.
That allergic reaction thing sounds like the kids body managed to process the allergy and get it out of their system but the mom instead just attributed it to whatever dairy product she had dunked her kid in last and not pure chance

Is that really how it works? I'd assume from how the son talks about it, it's under his name. Considering there was, at one point, 17k in there and the father pissed it all away, I'm also assuming he either worked for it or inherited it. Also he clearly has text proof that he didn't consent to the father taking this money and it's glaringly obvious to any reasonable adult that going from 17k saved up to 2.5k in debt isn't what he wanted.
On the contrary, the father shows a consistent pattern of behaviour of theft and fraud for which written records (and apparently even corroborating testimony) exist. The best analogy I can think of is this: The kid lives with his parents and has a piggy bank in his room. Since the father owns the house, he legally has access to the room and everything within it, and decides to just plunder the piggy bank.

I don't know how a DNR works with a third party. To get mine signed I only needed my signature and my dad's as witness. But that was for me. With my signature. Not, like, my dad and my aunt trying to do it without my knowledge. But you _can_ get a DNR order in your medical records without being incapacitated. I have one.

DNR and being in vegetable state are different no ? Coz if you have like your heart stopping, they won't bring you back but that can arrive in other situations than just being a vegetable. Signing or forcing someone to sign a DNR just because you don't want to take care of someone if they can't take care of themselves seems very extreme. Like burning a house to take care of a mosquito.

My friend's late mother and my other friend's brother have schizophrenia and rants about things not being reality are a regular occurrence. I'm a trans man. When I came out, my grandma said she loves me and accepts me no matter what and she'll always do, and that everyone who truly loves me will embrace every part of me no matter what. She's 71 and does her best to use my pronouns and chosen name even if she accidentally slips up sometimes.
She took me in when it became unsafe to live with my mother and now I'm living with her until I can save enough money to rent my own apartment.
She even looked for a therapist who could get me an autism assessment when I told her I suspected some of my struggles might be because of that, and that I'd like to get treatment for my issues related to it.
Maybe it's the fact she was never religious to begin with because she became an atheist as a teenager, and was kind of a hippie in her college years. Always the rebel lol

The expectation of getting married and having kids is super toxic and harmful, but also you should probably take care of your kids even if you didn't want or mean to have them? The systematic dismantling of reproductive healthcare is incredibly fucked up for many reasons, this being just one of them, and it impacts the poor *far* more than the rich, which makes it double fucked up, but it's also kind of just what has to be done til there's some real change.
So like, yeah, it sucks. It's fucked up. People are being heavily pressured into these situations even when they shouldn't or never wanted to be. But regardless of that, children do need to be cared for. Stuff like good government assistance for childcare, like day-cares and preschools and whatnot would be a great first step. But that's still a fight we're fighting. (In the US at least.)
...Though I must say it does feel hopeless sometimes... there's so many things to do and unless you're already in power there's just not enough time in the day to fight every fight.

Later when I got a computer "to study" I learned to be the worlds fastest person in fast-minimizing the window of the game I was currently playing. My situational awareness is still unbelievably good due to always watching out for parent-danger.
That one grandmother texting made me have a singular thought "Maybe Granny needs some nursing home pamphlets." because obviously their family isn't gonna want to take care of her in her golden years if this is her thought process.
The story of the religious grandma hit me. I am a cult survivor (Ex-jw) and I have been shunned by my entire family for being part of the lgbtq+ community. My grandparents are from a different church and also talk to me like that, I have limit my contact for my own mental health. It's not easy.
Hang in there; as someone who has had to go NC with a good chunk of my family (for different reasons), you're right that it's not easy but it is worth it. You deserve better.

My sister was the kid of a mega-church pastor who was married and so was my bisexual mom but they weren't married to each other so it's a case of double adultery. The mega-church pastor posted on facebook recently about how the LGBT lifestyle is anti-God etc. I replied that for the record, he'd made a baby with a bisexual woman and didn't seem to mind the LGBT thing then.

I've always been so angry that parents have complete 100% control over their childrens money, until they're old enough to do something about it. I am a victim of it myself at 2 separate occations. First, I lived with foster parents for 10 years. I found out that in all of those 10 years I was supposed to have recieved money, all which they stole (which is legal as they count as my guardian), which would have come out well over 100k. And later when I turned 18, I discovered that my mother had taken all of my life savings
Parents or any form of legal guardian should not have full access to withdraw from their childs account! If the issue is children not being responsible enough to control their money, fine, lock the account until they're old enough, or put a limit on how much that can be withdrawn per week, but giving full access to another person should not be a thing, even if it's their parent

When I was a kid both of my parents told me that parents legally owned their kids until they were 18. Kids have no rights and no law would protect you, a kid is no better than a dog. (their words, not mine) I didn't learn otherwise until I moved in with other family at 13, and then I doubted I wasn't property for a long time. That type of control and obsession can really harm a kid.

I'm so freaking happy that My bank automatically revokes any and all parental rights from your account the second you turn 18. While my mom didn't place a parenting fee she was incredibly controlling and would call me every time she saw a charge on my account and ask if it was necessary to buy. She was in absolute shock when she saw that my account was already gone from her portal as she checked it before going to sleep.
Thing is she has no reason to be like this, we weren't struggling financially, I'm quite frugal & don't spend unecessarily, I've always been an introvert and on top of all that I'm very paranoid about taking risks. I have literally never done anything to motivate this behavior but she's always acted like if I do anything that requires independent thought I'll "go rogue", I couldn't even buy my own clothes unsupervised until I was 20. It's freaking exhausting.
She probably just wanted to make sure that you’re financially responsible and not doing drugs or something. It sounds like she’s coming from a place of genuine concern, which is more than can be said about a lot of people’s upbringing.

My mom has always been an extreme helicopter parent, a classic Karen if you will, and has always acted as if nothing I did was ever good enough and no matter how well behaved I was or how good my grades were or how well I was doing in any activity that I was never good enough. She believed that if she took her eyes off me for a second then I'd become a delinquent. She was also extremely EXTREMELY religious so I was also never good enough on that front either (bonus points for starting puberty early and quickly developing a figure that overtook hers, therefore making me a harlot... obviously) and she constantly said I'd go to hell for this or that.
I know that her upbringing was extremely messed up just from the "fun stories" she's told me and she always tells me that I'm lucky I wasn't raised by my grandparents (which I am) but she doesn't see how she's repeating the cycle just with modern twists. Not once has she ever apologized for anything, even when I've come up to her and explained how her actions hurt me as a teen and then as an adult, she's always turned it around on me. Everything that I've ever done is wrong and is an eternal sin, and everything that she's done wrong is also my fault. I'm tired of accommodating and tired of being her emotional punching bag for her childhood trauma that she refuses to believe even exists because mental illness is the devil's work.
Believe me I've wanted nothing more all my life than for my mom's actions to be from nothing more than genuine concern but the truth is that she's just too much of a coward to admit that she messed up and that she has problems that should've been sorted out way before even thinking about children. I was the first thing in my mom's life that she had full control over. The first person to completely depended on, trusted & loved her unconditionally and she got so addicted on her newfound power that she forgot that I was a human too. I was nothing but a doll to her that she could use to live vicariously though, and she hated nothing more than my freedom ruining her delusion. Dolls are perfect but of course I'm only human, I have never, am never and will never be perfect so this whole game was pointless & rigged from the start. I will never be able to fulfill her wish because the problem is within her and that's something no amount of my love and effort can fix if she refuses to acknowledge the source of the problem. It's taken me this long but I'm done trying to put out fires every time she dowses this bridge in gasoline, there's nothing left to save and I'm no longer gonna waste my efforts on someone who doesn't even wanna help themself.

My parents were good about stuff like that and I never had to deal with that exact thing (Thank the good Lord), but I have had to deal with a living situation where I had to account for how spent my time (I was an adult at the, BTW). It really gets to you. It's a form of abuse. Please don't try to justify abuse.

I was just about to post this! I learned about this way back in high school after I had a variation of it. Whenever I had a severe panic attack, especially at night when visibility was low, I would become convinced that the people around me aka mom, boyfriend, friends, etc. had all been replaced by inposters. It would go away once I calmed down, and I haven't had it in many years, but I can still vividly feel the terror I felt. Its one of those experiences that affects the very core of your being. I truely hope I never experience it again!!

There needs to be a long list of things you should know before being allowed to be a parent. Things like, what an allergic reaction looks like, how to not steal money from your kids, your underage kids don't owe you for looking after them, and how to clean your own damn house!

As someone who helped helped out a longtime friend in need by co-signing for her and she rang up $4k worth of debt and vanished into thin air leaving me to foot the bill, I can’t imagine how much worse that excruciating pain feels when it’s your own parents who do that to you. 😢

I can't express how glad I am that many young people have this resource. Whatever you grow up with seems normal if you're not shown/taught otherwise. People think books, movies, etc tell what's acceptable, but they're woefully insufficient.
Unless it's directly addressed, we don't naturally make the connection. It's not as if we can extrapolate what's not psychologically healthy from seeing what IS.
Seeing an unhealthy situation which mirrors our own & observing negative reactions of those around us can be quite jarring. We can protect ourselves through denial, rationalizing, etc.
This was not available to previous generations. The amount of therapy & access to it was not available. The knowledge we have wasn't. The acceptance to seek assistance wasn't. The resources weren't. The solidarity wasn't. It makes me want to cry when I think of the difference it could have made in so many lives & how wonderful it is that there's hope for so many...& that we'll have fewer damaged people perpetuating damaging behavior.
Sorry...this is an essay! I'm just so glad when I hear someone's escaping a bad situation!!!

As a paramedic PLEASE decide in advance what kind of treatment you want or dont want if you suddently come in a situation where you arent able to decide anymore. We have a almost daily struggle with relatives, that dont know the will of the patient and it should always be the patients will that is enforced, not the one of emotional relatives. Here in Germany we have the "Patientenverfügung" (advance directive), a form where one decides exactly what parts of the treatement he wishes (DNR/DNI/external ventilation/pain-management etc.pp.). This often is crutial anf helps a lot
Advance directive exists in the US too, it's just that not a lot of people know about it. Everyone knows what a will is but don't realize that there's something for when they're still living.

as a kid who grew up with crazy parents, we are usually not crazy because their morals are so out of wack that we just make our own lol.
I bit my nails from a VERY young age, like bitten to the quick, skin around fingers picked & bitten. I got frequent infections & my fingers bled. My mum tried everything to stop me, all the stuff you can buy to make a bitter taste, but she used stuff to physically sting & burn to ”teach me a lesson”. She even tried when I was very little to tie gloves onto my hands, or tie my hands so they couldn’t reach my mouth. Then she just resorted to hitting me or throwing what she could reach at me (this once included a lamp).
This was not the only thing she did, but she hated that she couldn’t control my behaviour.
One day a friend asked about my nails, cos they were long & gorgeous... I had to show her that they were in fact real... she said how the hell did you stop biting your nails in your 40s, I just shrugged & said “well, mum died...” she nodded, chuckled (very old friend, she knew mum & had seen her public & private faces)
My friend said... “yeah, that makes total sense...”
Turns out my nail bitting was a stress response to her!
Parents should pay fees for emotional trauma. In my case, emotional neglect and ignoring the obvious signs of physical abuse at school. They barely noticed when I came home with a tooth knocked out by the jocks. They just didnt care as long as it didnt inconvenience them.
This subreddit has made me very grateful that I cut off all contact with my bio dad and his family. They constantly stole from me and emotionally and physically abused me or neglected me when i lived with them. I live with my mom and my step dad(who has been more of my dad for me my whole life than my birth father) and I'm finally getting therapy for what happened in my childhood(I'm 22 yrs old). I wish luck for everyone who has been in similar situations :)

@@artemisa1523 I found a reddit story about a man who was in a happy marriage and acted normal only to be hit with schizophrenia basically overnight, accusing his horrified wife of betraying him (i don't remember if cheating was specifically mentioned), calling her a garbage person, and even throwing his wedding ring in the trash. The wife had no idea what was going on. This is coming from someone with a diagnosed mental disorder (ADHD and anxiety in my case), mental illnesses are freaking scary, both to the sufferer and the people around them - it's why I fell in love with the psychological horror genre of video games.

There's a game based on having dementia/Alzheimer's disease as well as a musical composition that represents a descent from having full memory to having everything around you cease making logical sense. Both are highly disturbing, the first is sad and terrifying without a single jump scare.

My mother repeatedly called me while I was at work (I work 12 hour shifts as a nursing assistant). She left a message saying she would have to "do something" as I was not answering. I told her if she kept on calling then I would block her. She called me a lot of names and told me I'm not allowed to put restrictions on her and I have to answer her calls no matter what I am doing, including when I am at work. She continued calling so all of her numbers are now blocked. As she can't call me she's now writing letters and sending them to my house.
TC jr was sick a few weeks ago so I sat up all night in their room while they slept on and off. At one point they said "Sorry Dad, you didn't sign up for this."

If they actually read the Bible they would know that sexual sin is a sin you commit against yourself (meaning the consequences of your actions are on you),not god, so it isn’t punished by god like the others.
Even if we assume that Bible says that homosexuality is a sin (which some believers claim), it would still be a forgivable sin:

Me too. I'm in my 20s and my parents let me stay home (I'm disabled so living on my own isn't feasible right now). They don't charge rent as long as I go to collage, are so understanding and amazing about my limitations and care needs, and have been my rock through living through very suddenly losing my mobility and random new symptoms croping up every year. I'd honestly be dead without them. Ironically, they lived through insane parents like the ones on this subreddit. They really broke the cycle

Okay so btw for anyone who has parents who snoop in your mail. It IS federally illegal in the US. They can be arrested for this. If you can in a calm tone say 'I don't want to but if you steal my mail and open it I will have to go to the police about it' getting them texting the evidence that they did is also easy proof. My parents won't open mine both out of respect, but even though I gave them permission to throw away spam mail sent to me they refuse as it is illegal for them to do so.

For the warhammer one, pretty sure stealing someone's mail is a major crime in quite a few places. Should have just said they'd call the police for mail fraud if she didn't hand it over immediately.
