    yep, i agree. one of your best comic styles to date. would love to see an army like this on the table, it'd blow a few minds. I painted a hellboy core set for my mate, initially i was just going to try a great zenithal covered by flat inks with maybe a few highlights. it didn't go to plan so i went fuck it and you inspired me to try this style on the whole lot. Hey, weren't my minis and my friend didn't care as long as they weren't grey. Soooooooo liberating. Now i'm looking at my unpainted Batman Gotham City chronicles S1 and going "hmmmmmm"

    Amazing work, I was a 40k player (from 3rd to 5/6th adaddition) converted over to historical miniatures and haven't really looked back, but since watching your videos I'm seriously thinking about picking up something to paint in comic style. I might just copy your imperial fist marine and do a 5 man squad. Or some starwars legion rebels would look great, The possibilities are endless, i could paint all my muskets and tomahawks miniatures comic book style. They are already painted up so thats half the battle already taken care of..... I was wondering if you thought about painting up a few bits of terrain or objective marker to match the same style?, (I'm wondering if comic style miniatures would fit in on the tabletop with regular painted terrain or would it look better if everything was in comic style?) Sorry I am rambling. But thank you for showing me in detail the technique. I am excited to have a go at it, Cheers mate

      I think it would be a good idea to look at pictures of comicbook characters that are dark colors (batman,and see how the comic artists handled it. Looks to me like they work with greys, so paint greys on the model, like medium greys to light greys for highlights, then go do the comicbook style thing afterwards with the black ink.

    • @Epicduck

      I don't think it ever got made actually. This was a while ago, but I think part of the footage was out of focus, and I use decals so infrequently I haven't had a chance to shoot a new one.

    I'm pretty much brand new to the hobby! I'm gonna start painting my very first miniatures soon, and I'd love to progress to doing full armies in this comic style! Big question though, how would you pull this off with Black Templars or any models that utilize a lot of black? 🤔

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey I'm sorry I'm so late in replying!
      So when you have a black-dominant character in comic style, you're generally looking to do sharp edge highlights in white or near-white, just to define shapes. Consider watching how I painted Black Widow or Miles Morales as well, though I skew them to blue a bit :) When in doubt, find a comic book character that shares some of the colours you want to work with (like maybe Batman or The Punisher in this case) and find art of them you like, and use that as reference.

    Is there a trick to using higgins black magic. it seems mine is not as opaque. Its pretty thin actually.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've never run into this myself, but I've heard of this happening to one or two other people. All I can suggest is shaking the everloving crap out of it, and if it's still translucent, contacting Higgins? Maybe they'll replace it. It should be almost perfectly opaque.

    why black ink and not a black contrast?

    • @Epicduck

    3:39 Am I just tired or did you skip past the highlight blending here?
    Is that just not worth elaborating on because it's straight forward?

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  ปีที่แล้ว

      Around 3:20 you can see my applying the yellow to the feet in thinner coats which produces the blend. I did the same elsewhere. Flash Gitz Yellow is quite translucent and basically blends without much effort. I suppose I could have gone into more depth, but the video *is* already 40 minutes long ;)

      Good thing I used Blue then. That said, I found official GW artwork with them having blue, red, and even yellow on a Sergeant at one point. I don't think they're too internally consistent ;)

    • @jsh1103
      @jsh1103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Epicduck yeah maybe not on the consistency. I was thumbing thru the 8th edition codex a day or 2 ago. Noticed blue for lense, was thinking that changed cause I thought they were red.

    Actually a purple would have been the complimentary color to yellow for the eye but yeah blue looked good as well

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends on whether you're using an RGB or RYB colour wheel ;) My background is mostly in digital art, so my thought process tends towards RGB. (Yes, I know this reply is MONTHS late... I'm catching up on a lot of stuff)

    • @stanlee2200
      @stanlee2200 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Epicduck i didnt know color theory changed bc an lcd screen is made of rgb? i know they can still prodice yellows and blacks they just arent very good atr it...hhmmmm oh well

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stanlee2200 yeah it's to do with how digital colors are additive (combining multiple light Wavelengths to imitate a colour) while physical colours are subtractive (colours produced by reflecting a specific wavelength). They're different "colour spaces" so the whole colour wheel doesn't work exactly the same - like Yellow is a primary colour while it's produced by combining red and green Wavelengths in an RGB space - which is how it ends up opposite blue. This is why images on a monitor never exactly match printed images - programs like Photoshop will even warn you when you're using un-printable colors.
      Some newer LCDs are using an RGBY colour space now too, which helps them produce a wider variety of green and brown shades (and yellow, obviously), which arguably produces yet another colour wheel.
      Long story short, colour theory can go DEEP - for the most part it's good enough to know that two colours pair well, whether they're *technically* complimentary or not (which you hit on anyway)
