    • @Epicduck

      I almost always do the colour first and then apply the black over it. Doing the black first followed by using translucent colours gives a very different finish. Different processes for different results, neither is right or wrong.

    how would you approach the leaders cloak and fur for the comic style?

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the fur, I'd ignore *most* of the detail, and maybe outline every 7th-10th clump of fur, enough to suggest the detail without going nuts lining ALL of it. This is used a fair bit in comics - think of the scales on Captain America or Aquaman - they rarely draw every single one, unless it's a cover. Usually they're drawn either in a scattered way, or mostly around the shadowed parts of their costume.
      For the cloak, I'd do something similar to what I've done with the line work here: th-cam.com/video/gWPGQr8u6Rs/w-d-xo.html

      They look good and I'm happy with them, just not quite the blackness I expected.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@heroicselfcoaching6087 I generally use a Sable size 00 or 1 from Game Envy for inking.
      Try hitting your minis with a rattle can of Matt varnish before you ink, it's possible if your paint is slightly glossy that the ink just isn't adhering well so it looks translucent.
      Give your Higgins a really vigorous shake as well. It *shouldn't* separate but it can't hurt.
      If Higgins just doesn't work out for you, alternatively you can try Daler Rowney FW Black or Liquitex Carbon Black. Cuttlefish Colors is also releasing a new high-flow opaque black paint appropriately called "Duck Sauce" in the near future that's meant to be a replacement for these inks.

  • @simonthesorcerer9564
    @simonthesorcerer9564 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    why are you using black ink in the first step? which benefits has it compared to a normal acrylic paint?
    nice video, very inspiring

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the delay, didn't see this comment! Black ink is a truer black than most black paints (which are typically very dark greys/blues/purples) and it's much more consistently opaque. Black paint often requires multiple coats whereas ink is "one and done". Ink also flows more freely from the brush than paint does, so you spend less time picking up paint from the palette or rinsing the brush, and that also makes doing small consecutive lines (cross-hatching or hatching) easier.

  • @TheMichaellathrop
    @TheMichaellathrop หลายเดือนก่อน

    So first off this looks amazing, second off I'm curious if you've ever thought about doing this with something like a black 3.0, third I'm not sure doing this on a full army is actually any worse than paining a army with a lot of trim details on their armor though I absolutely cringe at the idea of needing to use black outlines to separate all of the trim from all of plates etc on a chaos model.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Black 3.0 is no more black than black ink - it relies on matteness over ffs surfaces to appear extra black, but the effect kind of falls apart on miniatures and it just reads like a dark grey paint tbh. I wasn't impressed with it for miniature work.

    I have a question on the black ink. Namely, why use ink for the outlines instead of just paint? What advantage does the ink have over using black paint?

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! You *can* use black paint, but black ink has a few advantages. Generally, it's more opaque and flows from the brush for a longer time - so when you're painting a lot of long lines or parallel hatch marks, you don't have to stop to reload the brush or try to get a second coat on a tiny little freehanded line. I also started using ink for this simply because it's what traditional comic artists use, so it made the experience a little more authentic.
      I've had a lot of students try using both inks and paints for this, and every single one has preferred the experience of using inks.
      Higgins Black Magic, Daler Rowney FW Black ink, liquitex carbon black, and even Speedball Super Black are all good choices.

    • @johndoe920
      @johndoe920 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Epicduck thanks for clarifying. Seemed counterintuitive to me because generally I know inks to be less opaque so I was wondering why you would use them :D maybe black is an odd one out then.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johndoe920 black ink is generally incredibly opaque. Artist inks (like Daler Rowney, etc) vary in how opaque they are due to the pigments involved - those with a Titanium White or black added tend to be more opaque while the pure colour pigments tend towards translucency. They're altogether different products from "game inks" some hobby paint makers create that are intentionally translucent because they're meant to be used as detailing washes.
