Wasn't the reason for Unleashed's initial slander mainly due to optimization issues AND the Werehog? I remember begging my friend to play unleashed on their 360 and that thing CHUGGED. If Sega actually made a Steam port like they did for Lost World, Unleashed would pop off.

Don't forget about Sonic Free Riders, which barely isn't the lowest rated Sonic game of all time, being only 1 point higher than Sonic 06. That game is physically painful to play, it should be lower if you ask me
One of my first encounters with Sonic reviews as a kid was when I would look up lists for best and worse Sonic games and see 06 as one of the worst and be jumping around questioning why everyone thought 06 was bad cause I had thought it was one of the best games ever 😂
@@adriandzikon797They literally forgot that sa1 and 2, generations, unleashed, frontiers, etc, exist. most of these games are pretty decent or good. And are usually a fun time. (I didn’t include the classics but you should count those aswell because they really said that sonic was never good)
Honestly with their most recent review of Superstars which completely misunderstands 2D Sonic and how it functions I'm convinced that they just hire writers who suck at playing Sonic games just to make them look bad on purpose.
The only employee at IGN I remember the name of is Jeffrey Goldstein. That man's name will forever be edged into my brain because of his atrocious Sonic Unleashed review. Still gives me nightmares till this day.
Keep in mind, most “professional” reviewers aren’t sonic fans and don’t know anything. The people who reviewed sonic 4 were like “oh a 2D platformer this is good I guess” and likely never even played the classics longer than 5 minutes.
To call them professional is a bit insulting to actual reviewers who aren't even professional yet seem to have a better grasp on reviewing than most mainstream review sites.
While I can totally understand being upset that a game got a lower score than it deserves, but I don't agree with the backlash when it's MORE than it "deserves". Like how people get upset that Sonic 4 Episode I was well-received, when it was a fairly decent game, and plenty of fans liked it too. Just because you don't like the game personally doesn't mean that it did better than it deserved.
I have a cousin who was an playing SA2B demo of City Escape at at store. People were surprised by how cool and fun it looked. He chatted with a few and told me those people did think sonic games could be good. Watching him play it changed their minds that Sonic might not be as bad as they were told
I keep waiting for a Sonictuber to talk about the IGN review of Sonic Adventure XD where the writer who clearly didn't play the game talks about boosting and 2D sections
Honestly in an ironic twist the "bad reviews" of Sonic games made me learn not to take any reviews of the franchise whether positive or negative seriously. At this point I've learned it's just better to play the games themselves cause if there is another thing I've learned is that neither Sega or the fandom seems to know what it wants in order for a Sonic game to be good.
People gotta recognize scores LITERALLY don't matter, their actual CRITICISMS do. What is a 7/10 for you might be lower or higher for someone else. The number doesn't mean anything it's subjective. No media "deserves" a specific score from anyone. Listen to the actual criticisms and arguments for or against it. That's what is being argued and agreed/disagreed with, not the score.
Problem is that these reviews are completely undermined by the review score itself. IGN has become a meme for how many games they hand out 7s to yet the review itself doesn't reflect the reasoning for even deserving it. And not just their video game reviews. The review of the Halo TV show was just so god awful cause if you're a Halo fan you can see how much they butchered the lore and characters. Yet despite all the problems it they still gave the show a 7/10.
@@e1iteyoshi998 The problem is with people saying "THEY" imo. There's different people working there and they all have different experiences. Every single person has a bias and that's what the number truly reflects. How good the individual thought it was to THEM. It's why when people are expressing their own takes like saying Sonic Superstars for example is a 10/10 or 5/10, it's just measuring their PERSONAL enjoyment and issues of it. If you keep thinking like "reviews only matter if they solely have the same takes as me" you're just being closed minded and thinking you're right and other people are wrong or vice versa. Once you let go of the score and listen to what they're really saying then it becomes easier to understand someone. And i'm not saying everyone is good at expressing their thoughts, but it becomes easier to listen to someone when you just let the score go.
@@ItsAK9 The only issue with IGN/Gamespot reviews and regardless of who reviews it's the score that gets the attention. IGN reviews have been known to be inconsistent like i said with the Halo TV show review. It pointed all the problems that the show as a whole had but yet at the end of the it's a bold direction for the Halo series that fans will like... yet it's a 7/10. If the score half the time actually reflected the review and didn't feel tacked on then it would be another review that would just slip under the radar. But every single review has been like this with almost every AAA game that comes out nowadays. It's not so hard to ask for consistency in a review and yet TH-camrs seem to do a much better job at reviewing than the "professionals."
8:35 Lost World required you to hold a button to run. That's what was wrong with it. Practically every single negative review mentions it. A parkour button is a fine idea for a Sonic game, but the idea that Sonic requires granular control over his speed so much that it's divided into two tiers you switch between manually was an idea already handled to chef's-kiss-perfection in the boost titles. Honestly, if they'd just upped his base walk speed and made the parkour button more overtly a "boost" button we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Lost World was good but let's not pretend gamers were making a conscious choice not to like it, they just got rubbed the wrong way once again at SEGA's insistence on fixing what was never broken and breaking what was already fixed ten times over. I don't hear a lot of people talking shit about Lost World's chain honing attack and god-tier character animation because those were things they did right. The refrain you generally hear is "less Mario in my Sonic game please" and "don't force me to hold a button to go fast if you're just going to cap my speed at a jog anyway," which I think you'll agree aren't unreasonable requests
Really, what you are talking about is Frontiers and Frontiers highlights why the critisism of Lost World is bunk. Yes, the default speed is too low, but you are going to stay running 95% of the game anyways, the same way you are going to boost for 95% of the game in Frontiers. Either way, you are going to hold down a button the majority of the game, the speed of the walk-mode barely matters in practice.
@@lpfan4491 You could have left it at "yes the default speed is too low." That's the problem, my dude. You shouldn't be walking when the stick is tilted all the way forward. It feels like shit in a Mario game, much less a Sonic one
Sonic Frontiers ain't even a Sonic game in my eyes. People praising it and saying it is the right step in the right direction don't know what Sonic is all about.
Now, for Sonic 4's defense, a short game isn't bad like S3K is pretty short, but its still an AWESOME game, difference is, S3K was made with lots of love passion and care, Sonic 4 is a hot dumpster fire shat out by an over-milked cow.
Honestly I have always not liked critics scores because I would always love the sonic games where on the cretic scores the game would be like a 50 or less where my experience and my enjoyment out of the games are usually pretty high with like most of the sonic games being 80-99 score on them. For example: The cretic score for sonic unleashed is 60, for me its a 90-99. I dont follow nor do I look at the cretic scores because i know im going to love the sonic games no matter what because thats just me and because I usually love the sonic games lol and because I genuinely love the sonic games and always have fun with them. Always remember, the critics scores do not dictate your experience and how you will like it. Love this video and honestly I loved talking about my love for sonic games :) Always love your videos and cant wait for more! :)
Here's some reasons why some of these games got the scores they got: Sonic Lost World's Controls are downright bad. Simply maneuvering Sonic is unwieldy and not in a fun '06 way turning in 3D makes you slow down to a near stop. All the moves feel sluggish, the homing attack is unreliable, the best part of the parkour system which is wall-running in 3D, is barely utilized. Sonic Unleashed gets praised in retrospect because we now know how long and frequent the Werehog stages are. Nowadays if you boot up Sonic Unleashed you know there's X amount of Werehog stages and they each take about 10-15 minutes to beat and if you didn't know, you can just look it up. But if you're a first-time player from 2008, you have no idea how many Werehog stages there are, nor how long they are. And whenever the Werehog to Sonic ratio is as lopsided as it is the game can become a total slog if you prefer the Sonic stages (as most people do). The Sonic Adventure games are similar to Sonic Unleashed where you have no idea how long nor frequent the stages that you don't like are going to be. And as a reviewer you can't just look at the Sonic portions and give the game an 85 for being "short but sweet" because there's a whole other 5/6 of the game that needs to be played and reviewed. When you factor that in, the score is appropriate because the general public doesn't like the non-Sonic portions of the game. Also back when the reviews were written, the reviewers didn't know what parts of the game were mandatory (or fun) so they played all of it and formed an opinion. And speaking of the time period, think about this: Why play the Mech shooting in SA2 when you could play Halo instead? Why play the Amy and Knuckles portions in SA1 when you could play Jak and Daxter? The competition was steep back then and Sonic was behind the curve in a lot of areas. I'm glad people enjoy these games, but there's a real reason why they got the scores they received at the time.
Yall are extremely harsh on sonic 4. I mean, as a game, its enjoyable and reliable, you can play it and feel like it was enjoyable and time well wasted. I mean its no masterpiece ofc, but its a good 6/10. Its like a good nutella sandwich. Easy to prepare, safe, reliable, and still tasty.
I think review scores matter at least a little bit because they do still get reactions out of everybody. Like if the game I really loved got an underwhelming score sure it’s not gonna change how I feel about it but a little part of me would still be bummed that everyone else didn’t feel the same way.
Also also - that part about Sonic 4, what you said is so true. I was still a kid when it came out, and it was logical to me that I SHOULD play Sonic 4 and I SHOULD like it because apparently it's even better than Colors and Unleashed which I liked alot. And guess what, I was forcing myself to beat stupid Sonic 4 and it was so not fun, I remember I was so annoyed by all of this, it felt like beating this game and getting all emeralds took forever to do. But in the end that was a lesson to remember, lol.
People also got upset at frontiers’ review scores bc there were 2 people who gave a 2/10 and 1/10, which was the reason the game went from a 76-78/100 to a 71. And the thing is that DIGITAL TRENDS REVIEWS TECH LIKE TV, BUT REVIEWED FRONTIERS FOR SOME REASON. The other critic I don’t know abt but digital trends should’ve left this game alone and review their TVs and such
Well let's be honest Digital Trends was just horrible when it came to reviewing the game not to mention their responses to the criticism just made them even worse. I mean it's pretty bad when you're compared to the early IGN reviews that they did of Sonic Unleashed and The Black Knight back in the day.
I do think Lost World deserves its 63 overall score, to be honest. It demonstrates that, just like Unleashed, the context surrounding the game's launch is so important. Viewed in a vacuum, Lost World is a polished, decent experience, but the issue is that it was the next mainline Sonic game after Generations, a game that refined the boost formula and introduced the reasonably fun Classic Sonic gameplay. All Sonic Team had to do was take those two gameplay styles and put them in original levels with a more fleshed out story, but instead they threw that all away and produced a highly experimental mish-mash of ideas with a severe lack of focus and poorly explained (though decently implemented) parkour mechanics. That is the core issue with Lost World, I think.
0:50 buddy, the thing you need to realize about game critics is that they are not just some people apart of some fun group that gets together and shares their opinions on some of their favorite and least favorite video games. These guys are professional journalists. When they play these video games, they’re not doing it to have a good time. They are literally conducting an investigation of what each game does right, does wrong, why fans would enjoy, why others would not enjoy it, and based on that information they have gathered, they (ideally) should write a completely unbiased review, which communicates their findings with people who are looking into buying the game, and based off of their findings give a score that will be publicly displayed, and also be aggregated on metacritic (which is where most people are going to get that information). Once again, these are professionals and not just some people apart of some club. They’re getting paid to write articles and reviews, so I think it is entirely fair to hold these people accountable when they don’t give good reviews.
I grew up with Unwiished, Sonic 2, Secret Rings, and Sonic 4 Episode 1 And I loved those games to death. My brother and I used to play the party mode in secret rings all the time together. And I loved Sonic 4 and Sonic 2. Sonic Unwiished though, was my first game I ever played. And I will always love it even though I enjoy the HD version much more now.
I don't think we should be dog piling people for bad reviews but I still believe that Sonic would be a much more stable series if Unleashed got good reviews. To make the worst game ever (Sonic 06) then follow up by fixing the mistakes and creating a banger game (Unleashed) only to have that banger game sell a similar amount to the bad game and get even worse reviews from certain game outlets must've really messed Sonic Team up. Every game from then on became a budget title and I got bullied at school for liking Sonic :(
I respectfully disagree with Lost World. It really encapsulates a lot of shortcomings with having a game just be 'fine to play'. Sure is refined, but doesn't make the controls any better to execute. And its the Modern Sonic problem where there is significantly less focus on the world, and more about levels, which is more like Mario than just the surface level comparison. Lost World isn't a bad game. But it's also not a good game either. 6 out of 10 is definitely what it deserves.
As someone who enjoys Sonic 4, I must say that Sonic 4 does NOT deserve an 80. I don't have a lot against Sonic 4, but it's definitely not an 8/10. Not by a mile.
Interesting video! You have good points. At the end of the day we shouldn’t let these scores influence us since they’re a joke 50% of the time and we should have our own subjective opinion. (I would have a hot take that Free Riders is overhated lol)
Well for an average gamer that score might convince someone not to try a game out for themselves so I certainly understand getting irritated with it. However these days most people are smart enough to not just let Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic be the deciding factor for how they feel about a movie or game. And the Sonic movies help alot with getting fresh eyes to try the games out for themselves.
Honestly, I've never taken reviews' scores for videogames too seriously for any game whatsoever. Even if they dislike Sonic, I don't care that much. My biggest problem, however, is that a game critic's opinion isn't inconsecuential like the opinion of the average gamer, their sole opinion can elevate or destroy the reputation of a franchise, and this can be seen very clearly with Sonic. I'm the first one to admit Sonic has many BAD games, but there are tons of others that are awesome or at least super enjoyable that get mediocre scores and that deters many from trying them. Many people outside of the fandom see that even awesome games like Frontiers or Unleashed can't even reach an 8, so of course they don't give Sonic games a chance. At the end of the day, I get that expressing their opinion is their job, so I can't hate them. It's just a shame that it damages a franchise whose reputation isn't that great to begin with.
Honestly, I'm kind of disappointed in the video. Not that it's bad or anything, but when I read the title, I thought you were going to pick specific reviews from specific sources and talk about them. I just wanted to watch you rip into the IGN Sonic Unleashed review, but I guess that's for a different day.
You know, despite my varying thoughts on the other games, I think we can all agree that giving Sonic 4: Episode 1 a score of 81 is just straight up absurd. I have a strong hatred toward Sonic 4, especially the first episode, and part of it goes back to when I forced myself to get every achievement in both games.
It's been like this for years now: only 8, 9, and 10 are considered "good" scores. 7 and 6 are "mediocre and meh" and everything below might as well not exist because it means "bad". Of course in case of x/5 scores just divide the above by 2. So any rating below 3/5 is essentially "bad". I learned to watch detailed reviews and then decide for my own if I want to play or not, or just straight try a game by myself completely blind and then decide what I think of it.
And what about Sonic Origins? Critics gave good scores despite the glitches,Sonic 3's music being replaced in some stages and in lesser, the DLC. It could be the later updates like in Sonic Origins Plus
Other unfair Sonic Metacritic scores include Secret Rings, Black Knight, Fire & Ice, 06, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 4: Episode II, Sonic Forces and I'd even argue for Rise of Lyric. Basically misunderstood or overhated games, Sonic fandom can be the most close minded type of extremists.
How is Secret Rings unfairly judged(In the bad-direction at least)? It got the 69 which is basically a 7. A 7 for a game that didn't become good until Dolphin was able to play it flawlessly(Because playing it on Wii-mote is a lost cause, you definitly need a controller)
Sonic Frontiers deserves between 75-80. Lost World deserves a 70-75. And Sonic 4 isn’t a bad game when you ignore the name and every other 2D sonic game to exist. At the end of the day, it’s still kinda fun to play. It’s not bad, but not good either so a fair score is between a 50-55 or maybe 60
To those who want to play a sonic game after reading an IGN review PLEASE don’t go to IGN. If you want to know why, before sonic forces released they did a little event discussing sonics history and here’s 4 things to why they are immature adults. 1. Apparently, Sonic was never good. Yeah, sonic has has some downs but also some VERY good ups like sonic 2, 3, Mania, generations etc. Even Mario fans respect sonics fans to some degree and that’s saying something. 2. They said that green hill zone was from sonic 2. Yeah that shows a lot about your reviews. Maybe do some research on your games first. 3. Worst one. Apparently we all want to have sex with big the cat. Yep you read that right. 4. They were extremely nitpicky. Apparently spikes, bottomless pits, loops and enemies make a sonic game boring. What’s next the blue sky, the green grass, the animals, the sea. So if you want to start playing sonic games based on IGN reviews PLEASE ask somebody else or read other peoples reviews other then IGN.
It's reviews like these that give me the option to ignore other people's opinions and forge my own when it comes to Sonic games Also, whoever gave Sonic 4 Episode 1 an 81% while giving Sonic Unleashed a 60% deserves a taste of Eggman's sorry excuse for culinary excellence

One of my first encounters with Sonic reviews as a kid was when I would look up lists for best and worse Sonic games and see 06 as one of the worst and be jumping around questioning why everyone thought 06 was bad cause I had thought it was one of the best games ever 😂
Sonic fans when someone gives their game a 7/10: 😡
IGN is NOTORIOUS for being unfair to Sonic games and giving them undeserving review scores. I no longer trust IGN with Sonic
Remember "sonic is never good"
@@adriandzikon797They literally forgot that sa1 and 2, generations, unleashed, frontiers, etc, exist. most of these games are pretty decent or good.
I don’t trust ign, period.
The only employee at IGN I remember the name of is Jeffrey Goldstein.
That man's name will forever be edged into my brain because of his atrocious Sonic Unleashed review.
Still gives me nightmares till this day.
“The controls can be fatally unresponsive”
*proceeds to jump over the boost ramp and into a pit*
i'm just watching the college dropout album in background lmao
Keep in mind, most “professional” reviewers aren’t sonic fans and don’t know anything. The people who reviewed sonic 4 were like “oh a 2D platformer this is good I guess” and likely never even played the classics longer than 5 minutes.
To call them professional is a bit insulting to actual reviewers who aren't even professional yet seem to have a better grasp on reviewing than most mainstream review sites.
Tbh sonic frontiers right now deserves AT LEAST a 8/10 or 8.5/10

No it doesn't, that game is trash.
7/10 for me

While I can totally understand being upset that a game got a lower score than it deserves, but I don't agree with the backlash when it's MORE than it "deserves".
Like how people get upset that Sonic 4 Episode I was well-received, when it was a fairly decent game, and plenty of fans liked it too. Just because you don't like the game personally doesn't mean that it did better than it deserved.

Lmfao the denial is gonna be on repeat the rest of the year lmfao
That's what is being argued and agreed/disagreed with, not the score.
a good way to view reviews
@@normalgraham Lmao.

You are very correct on sonic lost world
11:00 the sneak diss on a game you like is FOUL
Love this video and honestly I loved talking about my love for sonic games :)
Always love your videos and cant wait for more! :)
I like Sonic 4, but I understand that a lot of people don't
Here's some reasons why some of these games got the scores they got:
Sonic Lost World's Controls are downright bad.
Exactly
Sonic has been in a similar situation as the anime "Sword Art Online" where it just became a meme to clown on it.
7:57 Finally someone said it! Lost World is in my top 5 Sonic games
Matthasnocuts looks to have had a haircut this is false advertising, your name is no cuts. also great vid
growing up is by realising that reviewer scores doesn't matter
Just seeing Sonic 4 getting a HIGHER scote than *Da G.O.A.T* , just makes me question IGN as a whole
I don't think that was an ign score

What do you mean with "Da G.O.A.T"?
I totally agree with lost world
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog has a Score of 82.😅
i think the video editor did a good job good job video editor
yes correct perfect editing
I love that you have been posting a-lot more lately
I've been plaing sonic since the Genesis days and Lost World is probably my favourite Sonic Game.
I grew up with Unwiished, Sonic 2, Secret Rings, and Sonic 4 Episode 1
And I loved those games to death.
Every game from then on became a budget title and I got bullied at school for liking Sonic :(
"Show your rizzy gyatt to that subscribe button" fr tho great video
I respectfully disagree with Lost World. It really encapsulates a lot of shortcomings with having a game just be 'fine to play'. Sure is refined, but doesn't make the controls any better to execute. And its the Modern Sonic problem where there is significantly less focus on the world, and more about levels, which is more like Mario than just the surface level comparison.
Lost World isn't a bad game. But it's also not a good game either. 6 out of 10 is definitely what it deserves.
Imo, it's good but what you talk about hold it back from being great. Standards really aren't that high.
Sonic and the black knight is super unfair
As someone who enjoys Sonic 4, I must say that Sonic 4 does NOT deserve an 80. I don't have a lot against Sonic 4, but it's definitely not an 8/10. Not by a mile.
1:36 Nah i'm Going Beyond that I"m going "Hyper"
Sonic Boom Fire and Ice is underrated. Way better than Forces or Sonic 4
I think Sonic Lost World deserves a 6/10. Sure it works, plays nice, but the level design is so dull.

Nah, they must have played Sonic Unleashed while blindfolded to not see the touching story, the amazing world building, the soundtrack, etc.
Blame IGN and GameSpot for that.
Your sponsor is just a bunch of chao in disguise.
And what about Sonic Origins? Critics gave good scores despite the glitches,Sonic 3's music being replaced in some stages and in lesser, the DLC.
It could be the later updates like in Sonic Origins Plus
the first riders game got done so dirty, the score for that game shouldve at least been in the 80s
@@lpfan4491 Critics score is indeed 6.9, players score however is 5.5. Secret Rings ain't a 5/10 in any universe out in the multiverse.
1:44 How did Matt not burned?!
For any game I never look at reviews so I literally yelled when you said sonic 4 got an 81
To those who want to play a sonic game after reading an IGN review PLEASE don’t go to IGN.
Frontiers isn't perfect, but I love that there is finally ambition, and I do believe its updates helped.
It's reviews like these that give me the option to ignore other people's opinions and forge my own when it comes to Sonic games
Also, whoever gave Sonic 4 Episode 1 an 81% while giving Sonic Unleashed a 60% deserves a taste of Eggman's sorry excuse for culinary excellence
If ever listened to review scores I'd only play handful of Sonic games Lmao. I'm pretty open minded with Sonic games, s9 most of different directions the franchise has taken doesn't bother me.
