I have to say a few things- this is by *far*, the most helpful and constructive video I have ever seen on TH-cam on this specific topic. That is saying a lot as I take modifying vehicles purely through handwork a skill to be recognized. Please, please, please continue making videos like this and don’t stop.
The word "budget" to many people implies low-cost or price savings. Maybe include the phrase "...if you can afford a plasma cutter, TIG welder, MIG welder, press break and posess the skills to use such equipment." Just a thought.
Goin' Fishin' Hi mate great comment and the bike is a budget build and it has cost me very little as a lot of the stuff I fabricated is just scrap to begin with, I’m showing how I build the bike on a budget and I totally understand not everyone will have all the tools I have, I’ve collected them over many years but I also think you have a good point so thank you and I will start explaining how to do the same thing with minimal tools to help guys like yourself, thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment and have a great day
@@CafeRacerGarage thank you for responding. I really enjoy your videos and have taken much inspiration from them for my own build. ('78 cx500) From the title I was expecting a video like you described in your comment showing folks how they could accomplish similar results with fewer or less expensive tools. Far too often on TH-cam a title says "Budget" or "DIY" and the creator has thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment putting the project way out of the range of the average "do it yourselfer." I look forward to more videos especially if you make a few on the "Lower Budget" aspect of building.
@@goinfishin686 100% I will start adding more into the videos as to how this can be done without the expensive tools as I think you are not alone on this topic, Thanks again on the honest feedback. :) I also have a 78 CX it's my daily rider 👍
@@goinfishin686 he mainly just used an angle grinder, and a welder. his fancy sheet metal bender, could do in a vice, and use a hammer... he made a simple jig to bend the seat hoop... and the one scene where he used the cutter... for the seat latch, coulda done that with a hack saw or the grinder again...... chop saw for the exhaust fabrication... coulda just bought outright if that sorta welding is outside your means. the custom mount bracket was pretty DIY ...the drill press may not be in most people's means but ... maybe you buy the bracket, or go fucking ham with a hand drill. Obviously if you can't weld... or don't own a welder... you can't do any this so it's a moot point... but if you're creative enough, there's probably an option, a cheap or second hand welder, or finding someone who can do welds, or a maker shop or tool shop that allows people to rent space. can do all your mock ups... and try and bang out work
In 1979 I bought a CX500 Honda. I was one of my favorite bikes but I remember it needed a lot of valve adjustments. I loved the feel of the motor and the way it cruised.
This is awesome stuff! Your channel has evolved significantly since you started. I love videos like this that are purely "doing" and not "talking". Especially love the bolt and washer trick for the seat latch. Keep up the stellar work! One thing I would like to see is a name for each project - much easier than trying to remember which is the scrambler/tracker/cafe racer.
@@CafeRacerGarage naahh i am just telling the truth :-DDD seen many timelapse build that is too fasttttttttttttttt that we can't understand what they are doin
I love how you make your time lapse videos. It’s fast forwarding but I don’t seem to miss any bit of the details while you were working on your project. Very informative and entertaining to watch, I can’t wait to watch the others on your channel. Thanks for sharing.
Some great work. Next year sometime after I finish my current project I’ll be attempting to convert a xj650 into a modified cafe racer. I say modified cause i am limited on what I can do. I do not possess any of the specialty tools you have. Wish I did 😆
I've just finished binge watching every TH-cam video you have to offer Dan and I am absolutely blown away. you have helped me immensely with my current build and I appreciate it so much. Please post on your instagram if you ever go on any rides or bike nights in the region so I can make sure I'm there to meet the man himself, It'd be an honour!
Dan, its always a pleasure to see you work and watch your video. Can we imagine a special ‘tool video’ ? I mean you have a lot of cool tools now like sawjig, belt sander, metal sheet bender and so many and each time I want to see the brand and model, I’m searching into the description of the different video. Well, it’s just an idea. Keep building theses incredible bikes ! Thanks
Solid you tube content Dan. Really useful for aspiring builders. I like all the types of vids you do even the promotion ones as they are solid and relevant. Keep up the good work. Get one of these bikes finished and go an adventure.
For those wondering how to do this on your own. Books are available that go into detail about building motorcycles and modifying engines. I would heavily research on welding, or take a class, so you supply good quality welds that are sturdy.. you’ll save lots of metal and good money doing so
Hi Gary, I understand, it's just a sneak peek of the fab work ;) The complete video links are in the description if anyone wants to see more of one video in more details :)
Great vid, the tools & fab methods you use in your garage are an inspiration. By the way nice colour coded intro with the scrambler haha... CHEERS m8 : ) 👍
Sqausht Suspension thank you for the kind words my friend:) I kinda think to myself I use what I have to create what I can and as I get better I grow my arsenal of tools, However, a CNC is wayyyyyy down on the list so you can be sure to see weekly videos from me posting hand built parts :)
you can learn to weld at a nightschool if there are any in the area. Cutting and fabricating can be done with very simple tools. Metal forming such as fancy curves and fairings can be learnt with some trial and error (yet to really get into this myself) there are some good paints out there if powder coating is not possible due to location. I would say...decent tool kit, battery drill, angle grinder, welder (get a Mig, that can use flux cored wire...wont need gas if supplies are limited) . Things like pillar drill and lathe/mill arent that important but a big plus if you do happen to have them. If you are a bit overwhelmed with a project, you will only learn by getting stuck into it. I have done a few projects, and they have been of huge value to extend my skills. We live in times where kit and advice are much easier to come by, not to mention the choice of some really nice things you can add to your bike.
Can you please tell me how u were able to attain the knowledge of being able to build a bike like this I just discovered my love for motorcycles and please tell me I’d love to be able to do this
Perfect example of what I call TH-cam Economics. "DIY projects on a budget" as long as you have professional tools, expertise on the usage, plenty of materials and of course this video gives us a sense of everything done right at the first attempt, which is not the case most of the times. These videos are ok for watch but in real life just get yourself a finished product and don't try it at home with common and cheap tools. You'll put yourself in danger if you try to ride in a chassis not perfectly welded.
Alejandro Resendez Thank you for your comment brother, I love making videos to share my process, I’m very grateful to have acquired many tools over the years including experience and skills that I like to share. I just hope that my videos inspire others to have a go at doing things themselves but obviously pay the professionals to do the things they can’t. Thanks again for your comment and have a great day :)

Super nice welder you got there. Excellent tool for your line of work. Its really difficult to do a project like that with out one

how awesome is to have every single tool for the job!
that head light grill gets every time probably the easiest but so buttery smooth
Damn! I love how your fabricating skills improved to match your amazing level of creativity as the build went on. Excellent work!
