  • Thanks for watching! This video shows me attempting to fix a tweeter that is hard to come by that is used in both the Pioneer CS 99 and the CS 63DX speakers, the Pioneer PT-103F. It is frequently found in a nonfunctioning state due to being played at high volumes for long periods of time. They can occasionally be found for sale online for anywhere from $50 to $80 in working condition. I have seen them sell for as little as $15 in non working condition and that begs the question, is it worth buying them not functioning? Or can you just fix your tweeters and get back to enjoying your speakers? I dive in to see if it's possible to fix these 50 year old tweeters in 2024. I also show some frequency response samples from 3.3khz up to 20khz and compare a fixed tweeter to a stock tweeter.

My name is Matt. I live in Washington State and create content around vintage stereos and other audio equipment. I approach the hobby from the standpoint of appreciating the aesthetic as well as having a system that is enjoyable to listen to my favorite music on. I'm not generally spending time worrying about having the right cables or how good the speakers sound beyond a certain point. So long as the music sounds good enough to dance to, I'm happy. If you have a receiver that you would like serviced, drop a comment and we could talk about service costs.

Hi. Pro audio service tech with 47 years experience here. Just wanted to applaud your efforts. I work on vintage audio gear exclusively, so I know what a pain it can be to get some parts. Your repair idea is definitely legitimate, but as you noticed, you will lose some efficiency when you remove turns from the voice coil. About centering the coil: Leave the magnet loose, with the screws almost all the way in. Place the horn on something that gets its face up off the table so you can hear it, but keep it vertical and facing down. Run a 1/2 volt sine wave of maybe 5kHz into the tweeter and adjust the magnet for the loudest, clearest tone, then carefully tighten the screws, listening and adjusting as you do so.
    Good work, young man!

To think I thought of these types of speakers to be throwaway junk back in the '70! I was so foolish ("Whaddya mean was?")
Look at what I missed out.
You have sought and seen the inherent value in these components. Designing and adding better crossovers and better cabinet bracing could really elevate these speakers into something more listenable.
I'm awed at how much knowledge you already have and look forward to hearing about what you've learned from all these very worthwhile endeavours! Aloha!

Oh man, yea radio shack’s stuff was indeed looked down on. Some of it was quality though! Other people have come out with amazing upgrades for some of the stuff and I hope to come out with some upgrades for some myself eventually. Lots to learn, thanks so much for joining in on my journey!

    Nice work. 0:09
Also, thanks for breaking this all down in an understandable manner.
PS Are the Pioneer CS-99A considered decent speakers? They (4) have been running with a Sansui QR-4500.

Thank you! Glad that it was easy to digest, I try to break it down into manageable info that’s not too technical.
A lot of people think the CS-99a sound really good and pay over a thousand bucks a pair for them. Lots of people say they don’t sound good. I’ve never heard a pair but considering they can sell for upwards of a thousand bucks a pair, they must sound at least decent. If you like them, that’s all that matters.
