ActRaiser (1990) is a critically acclaimed SNES game which combines two major gameplay phases: a god simulator and an action platformer. You play the role of God "the Master", who awakens from his slumber only to find that the human civilization is completely wrecked, and hordes of demons are roaming free. The Master has three roles: to open new locations for humans to inhabit, to deal with the catastrophes happening there, which usually have something to do with grotesque monsters, as represented in side-scrolling action stages, and to help develop human civilization anew by controlling it during the overhead phases through a bow-wielding cupid who also repels mischievous demons, as presented in the form of an overhead simulation.
This is an improvement of 14:11.48 over the original run of this game from 2004.
Commentary from the authors is available as subtitles in the MKV and TH-cam video, or through this script (tasvideos.org/...) if watching in the emulator.

It's always a treat, watching a TAS with commentary! Nice done too!

The sim portion of game has a lot going on in the background, some of which you never see, but in casual gameplay it's as simple as moving the roads around and shooting down a monster when it attacks.

Thank you for taking the time to include commentary, knowing why and how certain things are done makes watching this twice as interesting.

Curious how similar the TAS for this would be compared to a potential TAS for the remaster.

There is so much more content in the SIM phase the runs would de-sync pretty quickly. Some of the city defending scenarios are actually pretty hard, too.

Hey man, so what happens if you leave the demons run a muck during the world building? What do the different/different colored demons do? I only ever played act raiser 2.

Red demon: dries up crops fields
Skull head: decimates everything with an earthquake
Napper Bat: kidnaps up to 4 villagers
Blue Dragon: uses lightning to destroy houses and any villagers inside

The soundfont of the original release is so good, I have to play the remaster with "original" audio. The modern versions of these tracks actually sound fake compared to the source!

So does the score not actually matter for town growth, and that was just a playground rumor or is there a lot more nuance to town growth than could be realized?

Honestly, as a fan of both the original and the new one, the new one wasn't half bad after playing through it 100%.
I do have two complaints about the new one:
1: The tower defense / RTS segments can be tough if you don't know how to react to certain situations.
2: Graphically, it's clear that it was designed for a mobile port in mind.
Really though, Actraiser getting any kind of attention is still better than nothing.

Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple."
Those are the ideals of the religion this game is based off of.
