  • Tom LaBonty is a former hobbyiest mechanic who wanted to grow up and own a junkyard. Instead, a co-worker asked him to build a cargo bike to take his dog to to the park. Tom discovered an awesome obsession, way to build community, and great way to transport his family fifteen blocks! Soundtrack by Jawbreaker.

    it's hard to make a bike that's unrideable... but I love this video, recycling bikes into cargo bikes is awsome. I have wanted one since I saw one.

    I've been wanting to build one for awhile. It's nice to have the cargo in the front down low. Can keep an eye on it. I'll haul grandkids, dogs and groceries ect. I know the kids will love going for a ride. Electric assist would be nice to help with the weight and hills

    I'd like a semi-recumbent Long John.
    The problem with my sketches so far is that even with dual 20" wheels and an 18" cargo box the wheelbase is 7-1/2 feet!

    • @AB-jc3gd
      @AB-jc3gd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      maybe you could make a three wheeler

      I came up with a box tail design with the cranks over the head tube and the rear wheel well splitting the back of the box.
      48" wheel base. I need a welder.

    The steerer tube doesn't need to be 90° angle right? Lots of videos on youtube about building cargo bikes stated that it has to be 90° in angle.

    • @MicrocosmPublishing
      @MicrocosmPublishing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, this bike is about 75 degrees. I think at 90 degrees, the measurements are just simpler to make elsewhere. The real magic of this bike is the double support pieces of conduit (two side-by-side) along the bottom. I swear that's what makes it perform as well as a $4,000 cargo bike.

    • @Pocketfarmer1
      @Pocketfarmer1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having the steering tube 90* would make the wheel base shorter.

    I would seriously love to do this sort of work in my own back yard, but my landlord is a complete dick. He even objected to a work bench until I thinly disguised it as a BBQ table. He even moaned about the bike I use as primary transport (yet has no problem with a guy in another apartment taking up 3 damn parking spaces with 2 cars and a boat for one person)

    Need to try tig welding of gas welding/ brazing mate and drop the ugly mig welds. Mig welding ok but not the best process for what you are doing.

    My eyes bleed! It is good job but it was old chrome-molibden steel racing bike. You must use carbon fork and made this cargo bike not harder than eleven kilo net weight :D

      I dunno! Ten years later and this is my favorite bike. As easy to ride as $4,000 model which also weighs 70 pounds.

    There's a World War II bicycle ambulance where the ambulances in front of the the writer on a tricycle type Carriage with a front wheel steering take a 10 inch wheel I ask what I want to make a lot of those being made would help the homeless problem could you see a lot of these Homeless Shelter trailer bite things going in those are Grove difficult to ride but if you get a three wheeler High thing like I need to take a look at it on Google Images it's really cool in the homeless would have a place to live and nobody steal her bike because they're sleeping in it and all her stuff would be right there with him and the cops wouldn't have so much junk and have to worry about do a lot of bikes got a funny China House mountains bike sitting around a little mountains if you look on China's bicycle waste cuz they all went from bicycles to cars and all those bicycles just got piled up in huge mountains and you can imagine three million people riding bikes suddenly stopping where they all go you make 10 of those bikes for pennies on the dollar
