Just a heads up. W.A.S.P. is technically a "hair" band, but they're not your ordinary "Def Leppard, Poison, Bon Jovi" group. These guys are bad ass and are heavier than your typical hair band.
They actually have a song called "Mean Man" and long-time AND founding guitarist Chris Holmes fits that bill. Blackie Lawless, the lead singer...just wow.
My W.A.S.P. list includes "Wild Child", "Inside the Electric Circus", "Widowmaker", "Mean Man", "Forever Free", "Blind in Texas" and my all time favorite power ballad... "Sleeping in the Fire"

I can't stand the phrase "Hair Band". It only describes the look, not the music. Then everyone like this argues what is or isn't the phrase. Zeppelin, Boston, Queen etc all had some members with big hair too, not just 80's. Even lots of 60's bands had big hair too. Zep and Boston had very different sound other than tenor vocals, just as Poison and WASP were very different. To me, It's all "Classic Hard Rock/Metal". Who cares what the look is. Alice Cooper and Kiss are very different than David Bowie. It didn't matter if Kiss or Bowie wore their make up or not, so adding "Glam" doesn't help categorizing them. It doesn't matter if 70's 80's bands now have short hair, they're still playing the same music.

  • @captaincapitalism264

Thank you for checking this one out, it's my absolute favorite of theirs! After this came out in '84 it was one of my top 80s anthems for the entire decade...so empowering. If you notice, Blackie Lawless changes up the chorus at the end to "I'm GONNA be somebody!"...how 80s is that? 😎 Blackie is STILL putting out material, to this day, he's crazy talented...and, side note, he's come full circle and in the late 90s told folks that he turned back into a born-again Christian (he was raised Christian), which hasn't stopped his rockin' one bit.

WASP. Legendary 80's shock rock metal. They were the type of band that would enrage conservative evangelicals. I remember when I first heard them in the mid 80's. The sound and image has changed over time, but Blackie Lawless knows how to write great songs. For me must listens are "Wild Child" and "Widowmaker" (1985), "The Big Welcome/Inside the Electric Circus" (1986), "The Headless Children" and "Forever Free" (1989), "The Idol" and "Hold on to Your Heart" (1992), "Rock and Roll to Death" and "Kepp Holding On" (1995), "Damnation Angels" (1999), "Evermore" (2001), and "Hallowed Ground" (2002). W.A.S.P. (allegedly an acronym for "We Are Sexual Perverts" 🤣) started in L.A. as a 'shock rock' band in the vein of Alice Cooper and Kiss... their early club show would see bloody raw meat being flung at the audience 🥩🥩
Metallica's tour in 1985 for 'Ride the Lightning' was w/ W.A.S.P. (and Armored Saint), but the bands had little in common... 😁
Blackie Lawless (real name Steve Duren) had played bass in various West Coast bands since the 70's... He formed W.A.S.P. in the early 80's w/ Chris Holmes (guitar) and Lawless on vocals & bass... First W.A.S.P. album in 1984 got "I wanna be somebody" on MTV and it charted at #74... the 2nd album 'The Last Command' (1985) was a bigger hit w/ the single 'Wild child'... charting at #49.
3rd album 'Inside the electric circus' (1986) was followed by a stellar live record 'Live in the raw' (1987)... w/ Blackie Lawless switching to guitar and Johnny Rod on bass. 'The Headless Children' (1989) was the last album before Blackie Lawless disbanded the line-up in 1990.
In 1992, Lawless delivered the W.A.S.P. concept album 'The Crimson idol'... it was an ambitious record and became a fan fave, but it failed commercially in the wake of 90's grunge rock... W.A.S.P. did not stop there, releasing 'Still not black enough' in 1995... Chris Holmes (guitar) returned to W.A.S.P. for a few years before leaving again in 2001.
W.A.S.P. released more records, and have enjoyed a loyal fanbase worldwide since.
More W.A.S.P. songs - 'Harder, faster'... 'Wild child' ... 'Murders in the New Morgue'... 'L.O.V.E Machine' ... Sleeping (in the fire)' ... 'Arena of pleasure'... 'Forever free'... 'Still not black enough' 😈🤘🤘🔥🔥

I've been a metalhead for 35+ years now, and Ive always thought there was something just a little dark and atmospheric mixed in with the glam rock/party vibe when it comes to W.A.S.P's earlier material (the up that atmosphere and remove that party vibe over the years), so I thought that analogy about "if Ozzy and kiss had a baby" was really cool. Gave it some thought and even verbalized, "cool" a couple of times in appreciation :)

The term "hair metal" never made sense to me. Anyone who sang any form of metal (or even hard rock) had long hair and lots of it. There's so many different terms nowadays because there's so many different genres and levels of speed to metal. But metal is still metal...the hair is a given.

@@dustinjones8887 Exactly! Back in the day there was 4 rock categories. You had Classic Rock like Bad Company, Boston, etc.. Then you had Rock like Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Tesla, etc.. Then there was Heavy Metal with bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, etc.. And finally Thrash/Speed Metal with Metallica, Slayer, etc.. There was no "hair" anything. After that there's so many sub genres, I can't even keep up. The whole hair metal/glam metal thing got thrown in there when the term has nothing to do with the music. It's all about the look. In today's world, Motley Crue would be considered glam I guess because of the spandex and make-up. It gets so confusing so I just stick with the original 4 categories 😆 Two excellent bands got lumped in with bands like Poison and didn't get the credit they deserved at the time. And that's Skid Row and Warrant. They were great in my opinion and not appreciated enough back then.

The lead singer / bassist / main songwriter’s name is Blackie Lawless. This is essentially his band and he is the only original member left.
His brief history, he grew up in the NY area, was friends with KISS’ Ace Frehley, was briefly the touring guitarist for glam legends The New York Dolls on their 1975 tour, moved out to LA and was in Nikki Sixx’s pre Motley Crue band, London. He then formed a band called Circus Circus which morphed into WASP.
WASP was much heavier & more controversial the the average hair band with a lead single / ep called “Animal, f*ck like a beast” and a stage show that featured a scantily woman on a torture rack, Blackie drinking blood from a skull & the band throwing raw meat into the crowd.
IMO their debut album WASP, is their absolute best, but their second album The Last Command is also very good as is The Crimson Idol.
Some other songs to check out are, L.O.V.E. Machine, The Flame, On Your Knees, The Torture Never Stops, Blind In Texas, Sleeping In The Fire, Wild Child, School Daze, Tormentor, B.A.D., The Idol.
