This episode sold me on Wesley as Kirk and i'm now all aboard the hype train. He may be a different build but his performance, his characterization is fantastic!
Nothing against Pine’s portrayal, but this scene and that speech cements Wesley as this generation’s Kirk. It is as profound and heartfelt as the character has been since Shatner first held the role and it’s by sticking to the core of the character-he never accepts death/defeat, he always keeps fighting, and he turns pain into strength. Plenty will spend time on the minutea of comparing Shatner and Pine and Wesley but the character they’re playing is what matters and Wesley, while playing a younger version of it with room to grow into who he will become, has the essence of him down.
Pine's Kirk took his gung ho ladies man angle to run with and nothing else. This Kirk has his gung ho Starfleet moments but also has his call to duty, love for his friends and loyalty to his crewmates.
This James Kirk has courage and determination, he has cunning and imagination, and he has loyalty and compassion. Important qualities to make an exceptional leader.
Kirk's comment that death is winning by making Uhura forget her family to lessen the pain is actually reminiscent of Kirk's refusal to have his pain removed by Sybok in The Final Frontier.
This is a wonderful expansion of Kirk's opening lines in Wrath of Khan, which at the time he delivered in an almost throw away fashion: “How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life, wouldn't you say?" Here Kirk is rightly saying that we cannot let death which is inevitable in life and especially in a life of service in StarFleet, win by either making us turn away from remembering those we lost or letting the memory of them fade because the pain of their absence is too much to bear.
@@suzygirl1843 I don't think she looks exactly like (the most awesome TOS officer ever) Nichelle Nichols but she does have a similar look which isn't a bad thing at all. This young actor will go far thanks to the groundbreaking efforts of Nichelle in the '60s. Her interpretation of Uhuru is different. Much more youthful and approachable which I think might be the point. I can see the character growing into the TOS Uhuru.

These two are somehow adding to legendary characters with their own nuances & styles while still honoring what has been.
He basically gave a variation of the TOS "risk is our business" speech. 👏👏👏

This is an excellent, classic Jim Kirk speech, and Paul Wesley nails it.
“Facing Death”. Or cheating it 😉

The mess was serving cookies. Real ones. They had one left. Pelia had crumbs on her uniform. Do the math.
Haha she would steal all of them too
Now this, this is Kirk, a perfect example of who he really is.
Even this version of Kirk gets all the hot chicks.
I sincerely wish they had cast Riele Downs or Simone Biles instead. They look exactly like Nichelle Nichols.

@@suzygirl1843 Yup.
There’s no universe where James Kirk doesn’t hook up with girls…

Uhura , i don't like that shape and color of that human.. Is that wrong of me to thing that, No i don't think so. I don't like it
She's the future of the human race. Caucasians and Asians are dying, haven't you heard? Not enough replacement rates.
