  • Today i wanted to show you all the cutscenes in darktide that have the traitor in them because its surprising how much is going on in the background. While there isn't a huge amount of lore to cover on this one there are a few things i did speculate which could explain and help to connect the dots.

    I bet the mission when you have to send a message to space using a dish in the hive is because Rannick fears the transmission may be intercepted by the traitor if sent from the mourningstar.
    I almost feels like they wanted to build an acutal story, but then ran out of time (or they'd have to delay the game again) and cut it short. Each cutscene with an NPC seems like the beginning of an arc (work harder till I know your name, etc.). I really hope they're going to be able to still work on the game and one day make it as they might have originally intended.

    • @SprayandPrayman22

      It especially stung when I found out that they have a large amount of cosmetics ready to go. It feels like their time was dedicated towards putting together enough of a game to play and microtransactions, which go figure.

    • @justinreich2023
      @justinreich2023 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      that's actually exactly why! there's a line of dialogue with Zola saying that not everyone aboard the Mourningstar is as trustworthy as they appear, and this (the comms-plex mission) is by far the less risky option for Rannick to ensure the transmission is secure.
      it feels to me like they had really huge ambitions for a drop-in-drop-out campaign, but ended up with a half-baked smattering of disconnected dialogue and cutscenes, so that if you reach a certain cutscene before hearing a certain dialogue exchange, it kinda falls flat. and with such an open and randomized mission experience, it's entirely possible to reach max level with a character before even playing each and every mission in the game!

  • @justinreich2023
    @justinreich2023 ปีที่แล้ว +201

    Personally I believe your headcanon generally, but I think it's a little more nuanced. Less that the lone rookie was given an ultimatum by members of the Sixth, but that they were the sole survivor on their first ever descent into Tertium, and that traumatized them.
    Chaos is nefarious. It slips through the cracks and takes control in subtle ways. Throughout our strikes into Tertium, there's plenty of Chaos iconography graffitied onto walls, ramshackle shrines built from rusted scraps, poxwalkers crying out for the Grandfather's embrace.
    The Traitor could have easily been mentally broken by the loss of their squad, and fallen under the influence of any one of these pathways into Chaos, being compelled by disembodied voices to scrawl glyphs and unholy wards on the walls of the Mourningstar. Being told to kill, to sabotage, to "join us". The Traitor could be terrified of themselves and paranoid about everything around them, hence why we see them clutching their chest and constantly looking over their shoulders in that one cutscene.
    I don't think the traitor aboard the Mourningstar was an intentional, surgically placed operative from the Sixth. But I also don't think they were spared by the scabs and given a choice to defect or die. Instead, I think it was simply the forces of Chaos doing what they do best, and overtaking a weakened mind who had lost faith in the Emperor.

    The traitor was probably Cognitae, or at least one their of their agents. The game takes place in the Scarus Sector of Segmentum Obscurus and the Cognitae are active in the Helican Sub-Sector of the Scarus Sector. The symbols found in the room are Enuncia, which are associated with the Cognitae. Just looking at symbols of Enuncia will make you feel physically sick and make you want to turn away, possibly send you mad if you're weak willed, unless you've been trained to resist it as Rannick undoubtedly would have been, hence the reactions from the different characters in that cutscene. All of that lore was created by Dan Abnett, so it all stands to reason this is why it's in the game.

      For those unaware, the Cognitae are like a bit like a Chaos Inquisition, focused on destroying the Imperium, which may or may not significantly predate the Imperium.
      They want to "liberate Humanity from Imperial oppression by using the power of Chaos," which... yeah.
      If that *is* a Cognitae agent, it must be one in training. They're supposedly equals to most Inquisitors. I highly doubt an Interrogator would get the upper hand against a fully-trained Cognitae agent unless Rannick is going to graduate from Interrogator *straight* to Lord Inquisitor.

    I kind of figured this, but was never really sure. The incense was a big tip off to me mainly because I thought of it as similar to a rosarius or machine spirit. Some rosarius given to people of the Imperium have no actual power field that shields the user, given as more of a status for their loyalty and faith. There have been some instances where a rosarius activates even though it's little more than metal. Then there is also how machine spirits work, recalling the story of a machine spirit of a land raider that fought a Ork force after it's crew of Salamander Space Marines were liquified, and fully overriding control to avenge it's fallen crew. Both trigger from faith placed in the Emperor/Omnissiah and reacting in turn to the bearers, the incense refusing to work because the traitor is a cultist of Chaos.
    EDIT: Oh and another thing I just remembered as I saw this. It makes sense that the traitor is a Zealot, at least to me. They're a Reject like us, so they're already viewed in some light, as being rejected by the Emperor since we're on an Inquisitorial vessel as a prisoner. This would either result in the Zealot either declaring their faith and loyalty to the Emperor even more fervently, or break them and leave them vulnerable to influence of another. And who is the most welcoming and accepting of the forgotten, rejected, and abandoned? Nurgle.

    It was pretty clear when the same character kept appearing in most of the cutscenes who the traitor was. I don't think the computer being hacked in the hallway was a mistake on Rannick's part. And just because there were a lot of people around in the cut scene doesn't mean that hallway is always so populated. Imperial ships are mazes, we only see the tiniest part in game, and we see more parts of it in the cut scenes. Knowing there are transmissions being beamed from the ship to the traitors, all of computers who can access transmitters are guarded. The traitor was obviously feeling pressure in the previous cutscene, so they were probably desperate. So they found the least defended terminal and hacked it with a servo skull after killing the guard. I wouldn't put it past Rannick to set up the situation to tempt the traitor out, either. The life of one guardsman is nothing compared to finding a traitor.
    There are a number of other ways they could have been turned traitor besides what you mentioned. They might have always been. They were a prisoner after all, in for heresy by the color of their garb. They could have always been loyal to Nurgle or chaos and used the opportunity to join the warband. They might have been corrupted by one of the other cultist prisoners on the ship. They might have become infected during the warp journey to Atoma. The Gellar Fields didn't seem to be working very well by the opening cutscene. They might have become tempted or tainted when they realized what they were fighting in Tertium Hive. They might have gone willingly, seeing it as a way to escape being a prisoner with a short life expectancy.
    Not that any of that matters. The Inquisitor rarely cares about motives why people turn traitor. Just destroying them when they do.

    Going off the idea that the traitor was corrupted during their first mission there are audio transmissions from a squad you can overhear. Needless to say it ends badly for them with all but two members of the team dead confirmed. While one member was captured by the enemy and is begging for death, the last we hear of the other is maniacal laughter. Its quite possible that this could be transmissions from the traitors team, with the traitor herself having basically been driven mad and falling to chaos, becoming an spy for the Mobian 6th.

    I always wondered this. But what if our character are actually the side characters in this story. And that's the point of us missing all the investigation and only knowing the drama second-hand. With the "Cover art" team being the canonical main group. Because i think the last team she was going out with was the cover art team, and they survived by looks. I feel "Our" story will come whenever they bring the second hive city that totally doesnt exist into the lore/game

Then again, those are harder to pick up and if you just rush on by everything without taking a proper look you'll miss out on a lot of it.

    I'm genuinely confused why they even bothered with the cutscenes. They're such a nothing burger, even the fact that the Traitor is visible in earlier cutscenes doesn't by itself show that this plot does anything to advance the story of darktide in any way whatsoever. Traitors are a bit of a thing in 40K to the extent that the story as the cutscenes show it is literally nothing more than an almost every day occurrence in the Imperium, plus we're working for the Inquisition sooo....
    I feel these cutscenes should have just been removed as it's likely a lot was cut from them already and each one left me feeling baffled at what the point of it was. "good work, work harder and you may/may not be considered a traitor" sums up the cutscenes in their entirety.
    The in-mission dialogue between characters and npcs, plus the addition of the comms-plex mission do more to advance the beginnings of a story and while the new mission can be seen as tied to the reveal that there is a traitor, again this is not enough by itself to tie the cutscenes and story development through gameplay together.

    i like how the traitor is right there looking at their work too. i like too think they already knew about her but let her run around trying to expose anyone else.
    its also a neat tidbit but our own characters don't seem to be affected at all when looking at chaos markings in levels. which was either a mistep or just means our characters just have that much willpower or they accepted their fate to die for the emperor and have protection.
    i think she had been corrupted during her first mission as well from the chaos markings and maybe after her team died or maybe she was separated leading them to fail without a full team or betrayed them right at the end of an assassination mission that was reported as successful.
    its also odd how she has so much confidence at first but seems to lose it it all and starts to act SUPER sus. maybe they cut contact with her but its odd how she tries again but just at a terminal out in the open when people are resting.
    she could have also been a double agent but with her status as a prisoner thats unlikely to work even if they gave them guns and if she was already afraid of death then that wasn't gonna happen

    It sort of makes sense, that you’d have absolutely no idea who the hell that person was. Like the amount of people serving on an inquisition strike cruiser must be boggling, you drop into so many sorties with random prisoners and warband members- some you never see again simply because they’re so many. Having her be the commissary lady doesn’t mean anything to anyone and that’s by design. It’s impact is blunted by the fact that she really was just another face in the crowd and for the most part we are too. It was just another day for our character and that’s what makes this so interesting

    I think a short 3 mission "campaign" with the Rannick cut scenes in-between them would high light that story element a ton. like the mission objective is to find info about who the traitor could be and the hold out sections are fake info cashes to bait you to ambushes. Or it could be a random set of 3 mission with guarantied modifiers (the traitor making things harder for you) on them you play back to back. just put it in the conner of the mission select screen, so it can be replayed, and done now you actually engage with that aspect of the "story" and could feasibly guess that random charter model that keeps showing up is actually important.

    perhaps after the horrible mission gone wrong they let her go, but had to make it look legit, so chased her, much like the hordes will when you try to leave a mission, and the ship got damaged on its way out.

    Judging from player chatter in each mission, this game was seemingly going to have a sort of direct story, like how V2 did it.
    So we'd have missions starting from the underhive, and we would progress our way up as we unlock trust ranks to unlock missions that are higher up in the hive.
    Some of the higher-up missions even have mission-support folks (like the pilot, hadron, zola, etc) talk to you about how there might be a traitor on board.
    If they kept it that way, this whole traitor thing would have made much more sense... Instead, they went with the whole random, unordered mission board thing and it just completely nukes the coherency (ha) and structure of the narrative and what was left of it judging by a lot of the cut stuff, outta orbit.

    • @Sorain1
      @Sorain1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect the idea was going to be story missions unlock at level thresholds and the missions we have now were the random 'filler' missions in between. (Though they may have recycled the intended plot event mission material.) This would let them use the randomization with some amount of grind, but still have their story missions ala the previous games. Presumably you could repeat the plot missions (and thus join other players on them) once you hit the end of the initial plot on at least one character. But, you know, when the game release got pushed up by what looks to be 1 1/2 to 2 years or so... yeah.
