Cows on Pasture; But Do We Have Enough Grass?

  • Dry weather continues as we get our beef cattle out on pasture and our steers over to the lush summer fattening pasture. It's been weeks since we've had measurable precip and the twin threat of not enough pasture and not enough hay is more real. How to respond? #familyfarm, #feedingfamilies, #farmanimals, #drought

    The rain has sure been hard to come by this year! I have been holding off on cutting much hay because its been so dry. But we did make those square bales for the calving barn

      I saw you were baling. I don’t think we’ll have enough volume to cut before July.

    Take what you can get. We received one tenth of rain Wednesday night, no where near of what we need. Your cattle look really nice.

    I was stumping a pasture last weekend, the soil is nice and damp about a foot down but the soil above that is really dry.....All we have to do is start cutting hay and it will start raining, lol....I pray we don't have a repeat of 2 years ago...Thanks Dave, pray for rain.....

      Boy I hope we don’t have that again. We have some low ground that typically stays wet but the creek stopped running two years ago so the cows had to come back to the barn for water.

    You’re about 2 to 3 weeks behind us which makes sense being as far north as you are I used to travel up there to superior Wisconsin quite a bit, so I kind of know the area, the steers, sure look plump. Looks like you got a Lotta good manure to use must be super nice to have them out on pasture. Wow, you guys must really relish your summers are so short that far north. I have a field that are down 70% yield.

      @Rollinghillsfarmsmn  ปีที่แล้ว

      Down 70%? That sounds grim. The steers have a good head start thanks to the high quality hay from last year. Their paddock is low and wet so it grows good in dry years. We have very short summers filled with farming, fishing 😉 and a few beers.

    We're getting a bit more moisture than the last two years. We get a few tenths here, and there. Over by Redwood Falls they have plenty. Just 45 miles away.
    Thank you.

      Isn’t that crazy how a few miles make a difference. We got missed again last night. It was like Lake Superior just ate the clouds…

      @Rolling Hills Farms-MN Raining on the Iowa border now. Supposed to get here this afternoon. So far we aren't as dry as last year. I just pray for the best.

    Hope you get some rain and your pasture improves. I am amazed with the number of rocks strewn about your pasture. Were all your fields like that at one time? How do you ever mow it?

    • @Rollinghillsfarmsmn
      @Rollinghillsfarmsmn  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what this whole area looked like after they logged the white pines 100 years ago. You can step from rock to rock and never touch dirt🙄. Needless to say you can’t mow pastures that haven’t been cleared. All the fields are bordered by huge rock piles and more come up every time we plow. The Finnish immigrants dragged the rocks off meadows and pastured the rest. We bought this place from the family that cleared the land starting in 1910.

    Drought sucks!! Even though it's raining here today, we are in drought for the fifth year in a row..
    May should be 5-7".. it was 0.73". June should be 4"++ (as of this morning, it's 0.04 ".. )
    6 years ago (and before that)
    We sold 80% of the hay we made.. have sold less than 2% since then.. and only getting 50% yields.. still have had to buy hay.. and that's with half the cows we had..

    • @Rollinghillsfarmsmn
      @Rollinghillsfarmsmn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Holy cow that’s serious. How can you fight 50% yields? Won’t that compound over time?

    Cross your fingers you have enough!!
    Seems we actually have rain this morning... And almost 2 semi loads of hay still in the field...
    Catch 22... Didn't know it was coming.. wasn't supposed to... Should have stayed up all night... but it's all bunched for loading, only half are getting the tops wet..

    We will see if it rains enough to keep pasture going. Hay is going to be a disaster. Maybe we'll get enough July and August rain so the Sudex can save us here.

    • @Rollinghillsfarmsmn
      @Rollinghillsfarmsmn  ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re right, hay is cheap but I’m carrying over 68 round bales that will save us if hay is short. We won’t cut until late June. Need more volume.
