  • The first time I heard Avenged Sevenfold, it was a somber track dedicated to their late drummer. The second time I heard Avenged Sevenfold, it was about necrophilia and cannibalism. Needless to say, I had no intention of going back and giving them a third try... but the power of the TCV fanbase is rampant, and your requests have been answered!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Avenged Sevenfold performing "Hail To The King" for the first time.

I love love love this channel. Its by far one of my favorite channels. my personal theory is that what happens in the voting sometimes is that people dont want to recommend the same song over and over again, so they keep the band consistent but change the song, so sometimes songs that might not be the best for introductions to an artist get picked.

The thing with Avenged Sevenfold (and the reason why everyone's recommending different songs in the comments haha) is that they have always been so eager to evolve their sound and their influences. They started off with this crazy garage metalcore eclectic sound, driven by The Rev's insane talent and creativity, and after his passing they really leaned hard into more commercial sounds - this song is probably their most radio-friendly out of their most radio-friendly album. Lately they really just do whatever they want with their sound, some people LOVE the new stuff, and "OGs" often hate it lol.
As a fan of all their eras, I think you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't explore these different sounds in context, because (not only, but especially from a vocal standpoint) looking at their evolution is honestly really interesting.
Also just as an aside, The Rev was an amazing vocalist and often did backing vocals in tracks like Critical Acclaim. My personal favorite from them is Blinded in Chains, from City of Evil.

I dont think I have seen a comment so perfectly describe A7X sound. I've been a fan of them right from City of Evil, and they are one band I can listen to each of their albums front to back. I love them so much. But, as you said they have evolved their sound as each release happened, and its been an absolute treat as a fan.

Maybe this is just cause I love AC/DC and they had a similar thing where they lost their vocalist too, but it kinda reminds of AC/DC. With Bon Scott, they explored a lot with their songs. They definitely didn’t rely on him (the Young brothers are also very memorable). But in song where they had a “tough/intimidating” vibe to it, Bon did it with a more gravely voice. He wasn’t loud and didn’t really scream much. And I feel their songs tended to be slower. And he was with them until right after one of their biggest albums “Highway to Hell”.
Where a lot of bands try to recreate their sounds with a new singer, instead AC/DC adapted and changed with their new singer Brian Johnson. And still found a way to keep a similar vibe while changing the sound to fit Brian’s higher-pitched screams and deeper gravely voice. And they found a way to make their very first album with Brian their best selling album. Songs like “TNT”, “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, “Ride On”, and “Highway to Hell” are some of the biggest songs with Bon Scott. But they’ve also had massive hits with Brian Johnson. In just one album, they made “You Shook Me All Night Long”, “Back in Black”, “Shoot to Thrill”, and “Hells Bells” (which is also a tribute to Bon Scott). Probably their biggest hit of all time, “Thunderstruck”, was with Brian Johnson too.

Both guitarists are amazing, I love how they alternate between themselves (especially on this song) on who forms the rhythm and who has the more “star role”. Like on the intro it starts with that crazy riff, but right as that riff would become old with no intervention, the other guitarist comes in and turns that initial riff into the rhythm. Then as the key changes that first guitarist becomes the more dominant again, it is both amazing production and amazing songwriting

This exactly. One of the most hilarious things that people give A7X shit for is that they "copied" several bands with this album... Yeah, that was the point, it's basically a tribute album. I'm not even going to argue if people say it's one of their weaker albums, it's certainly not my favourite, but to criticize it for sounding like Metallica or G'n'R is hilarious, because that's not something negative in this case, they're just saying that they achieved what they set out to do.

It seems like all great rock singers have issues with that sooner or later. It's too bad they don't learn how to sing properly FIRST, THEN record their songs, but it's like they lay down some sick vocal take (with poor technique) and then try to live up to that everytime they play it live, and it takes its toll eventually.

I am 32 now and have listen to every album forward and backward and you have given me insight into Matt's vocals that I have never even considered. This is why I follow your channel so closely!
Much like everyone else's comments on this video, I agree that you need to take a dive in to their discography. Warmness on the Soul off of their debut album "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet". Unholy Confessions off of the OG Fan favorite album "Waking the Fallen" and Seize the Day off of their rise to fame album "City of Evil".
Also, the necrophilia filled love ballad "A Little Piece of Heaven" that you are so disturbed by holds a special place in the Fallens heart's as it was the final and craziest love note that The Rev left us before he left us. Just know that it disturbed us just as bad the first 10 times we heard it. Once you get past the whole necrophilia thing it really is quite nice.

The Rev was still with us for that record, meaning their little family, who have known each other since their early teens, was still whole. I feel that once the Rev passed, the boy's hearts were heavy (rightfully so), and their style really changed. Both vocally and instrumentally. Synyster Gates is probably the best guitarist EVER in my opinion. If you ever get a chance to see some of his master classes, he makes mention "never let a single note go to waste" and it really shows. His quality and attention to detail in his composition is absolutely top notch.

what i love about your metal journey is you show exactly why the stigma around metal being simply loud angry music is surface opinion. watching you discover and find joy in its subtle layers and nuances is amazing. this is why I come, I find this same joy in it. Thanks for sharing your Joy with us all!

The live performances of this are great too because Syn/Brian sings harmony backup and hi voice is SO GOOD for it! I think in the studio version he does too but its still layered with Matt's backup layering too.

Saw them last night for the first time since 2005 (my first show)I COULD NOT believe his stamina and range after all this time. He knew exactly when to back off, where to use the audience to rest. His band mates support with these beautiful scales and harmonics that just send chills down your entire body. If you ever get a chance to see them, please do! They have an endless catalog to choose from. Please don’t be turned off by some of their content. They build so much on all genres. Their newest album is a wild and confusing time. Great video!

I’ve been a fan of Avenged since I heard Beast and the Harlot when Guitar Hero 2 launched in 2007. Finally saw them live in 2023 and they did not disappoint. The sound has changed over the years and I’ve loved every minute with them. I know things have been divisive among the metal community but I ADORE that they constantly change their sound.
    Another great analysis, Elizabeth! 😊

Hi Liz. You have to know the band Mudvayne and Seether. Mudvayne have a incredible songs with strong lyrics and powerful vocals from Chad Gray. "Dig", "Death Blooms", "Happy?", "World So Cold", "Determined" (Grammy nominee), and several other notable songs. Seether is unacceptably underrated, as is Shaun Morgan's remarkable voice. It's one of my favorite bands, like Mudvayne. There are so many incredible songs like "Rise Above This", "Remedy", "Driven Under", "Fine Again", "Breakdown", "Broken (ft. Amy Lee)" and so many others with addictive melodies, riffs and lyrics. I'm a self-confessed super fan!

With their latest album, he has a different technique and specially in their current tour, I feel like he has found a new technique for singing with distortion. Love the videos!

Elizabeth I would like to thank you for doing what you do, and doing it so well! Who would have imagined that such an amazingly talented and espected operatic singer would not only tackle metal but become such a fan?! You have exposed so many so called "snooty classical singers" to this side of music and become such a fan! Also teaching them to appreciate it as well. Being such a renowned and talented artist has opened others that might not have done so had you not been whom you are. Metal and all its talented facets have been opened to a whole group of musicians and aficionados that definitely would not have done so had it not been for you. I love your enthusiasm and beautiful personality that boils out with such vervor! You are an incredible talent not only in your own singing, but the reviews that you do. You are greatly appreciated, enjoyed and I am always excited to see your new content each and every time it is released!! ❤🤗
