    Steve Ramsden here with DIY Moviemaking and today we are looking at the difference between Special and Visual Effects and I share my top 6 tips on how to decide which to use in your own films!
    A lot of people seem to think Special and Visual Effects are the same thing or get them mixed up, especially as they are both of course technically ‘visual’ and they’re seen all the time in films and TV.
    Special Effects (which are sometimes called SFX or practical effects) usually refers to on-set techniques that were done in real time, in camera on the day - and this would be things like pyrotechnics, rain machines, animatronics or puppets, miniatures, or perhaps stage blood and prosthetic makeup.
    Visual Effects (which gets referred to as VFX or sometimes Video Effects) normally refer to things that weren’t there on the day but are digitally added later -now this might be things that were filmed separately such as weather or action elements, or shots done with green screen where you are removing a background and adding another one which is often called a ‘plate’, or maybe it’s full computer generated imagery or CGI which will get added in to a finished shot.
    On big film and TV productions that use a lot of effects, there will be a discussion during pre-production about which approach to use for each shot, and many films use a combination of both.
    But most importantly, both SFX and VFX are methods of enabling you to enhance the narrative of your story. I regularly do experiments with both practical and digital effects as you might have seen on my TH-cam channel, and I’m always trying to get great results with very little budget.
    But when I try these effects, even as individual experiments, I’m always trying to root them in storytelling - they are still little sequences with a beginning, a middle and an end - there’s usually a setup and a pay-off. So if people ask me what kind of effects they should use in their short films, I usually start by saying it will be a better film if the effects support the story and not the other way round.
    And using both these kinds of effects in your films can really up your production value if they are done well. But if done badly they can look incredibly distracting. But let’s say you do want to use some effects to add to your story - well how do you choose the right type of effect for your script, and how do you execute it properly? Well, check out the video for my top 6 tips to choose between SFX and VFX.

    As an SFX and VFX guy, I always find it very frustrating that VFX get lots of scrutiny from everyone with a voice. And SFX everyone is cheering when a prop is brought to set and they are all like: "that is so cool!" -- even when it was a rush job.
    It's as though there's not the same level of scrutiny because it simply is tangible and not virtual. Directors, Producers and Art Directors know how difficult it is to do something in reality. Since VFX is so abstract, and "software" oriented it seems to them to be simpler and held to a higher standard.

    I will always refer to them as Visual Effects (which is what the BBC quite logically reverted to using years ago) to avoid being confused with Sound Effects (and the Sound Effects Department). These days the terms and words get bastardised, somebody starts this and people get easily carried along with it, if modern day VFX is specifically referring to CGI then why not use that explicit term CGI instead?

    • @SteveRamsdenYoutube
      @SteveRamsdenYoutube  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say because VFX can still mean things other than CGI, e.g. combining real filmed elements together that were filmed separately

    This conversation is a deep one. I actually hate when people call visual effects, special effects. For the record..
    SPECIAL EFFECTS - PRACTICAL EFFECTS - THINK REAL FIRE, EXPLOSIONS, BLOOD SQUIBS, DONE ON DAY OF FILMING - ETC
    VFX - EFFECTS THAT ARE ADDED IN POST - THINK GREEN SCREEN SET EXTENSION, COMPUTER GENERATED IMAGES (CGI)
    Sorry for caps, I was actually raging when typing that.

    • @Leukick
      @Leukick 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should both be categorized under the umbrella term VFX, and then differentiated as either "practical" or digital". They're both "visual" after all.
      That way "Sound Effects "can remain as SFX, because that makes way more sense.

  • @Ranger7Studios

    what's your advice in finding motivation to film as someone who is an aspiring film maker?

    • @SteveRamsdenYoutube
      @SteveRamsdenYoutube  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. Partly this is a thing that can be helped by practicing just regularly making anything rather than making nothing. One of the ways to force yourself to do it is to create your own deadlines. Also, all your favourite directors will have made plenty of terrible films when starting out. So reduce the pressure on yourself to come up with a masterpiece right away! 😀

    As a fan of movies I can say I prefer practical effects.
    Computer effect have come a long way, and yes you can make them seamless.
    I am thinking along the lines of camera movements along with practical elements.
    A good example I always love is the store explosion from Robo Cop. The actors were not really expecting it to be as big as it was so those were real oh shit reactions.
    Car chases like Starsky and Hutch are visceral, and not CGI or over the top where they are impossible in reality.
    There is something to be said on keeping things grounded to pull the viewer into the story.
    Then we have all the practical work on movies like Star Wars. Yup models, and lots of composite shots, but it all seemed to work.
