As a Canadian travelling to USA for many years...all the questions asked by CBSA are the same as the US CBP. Never wear sun glasses, roll down back windows, look agent in the eyes, be honest..know your destination, planned itinerary ...most people have a schedule they're following..very few Vagabonds. BTW US customs agents are way more intimidating and far more severe.

As someone from the US who has traveled to Canada several times over the last few years, I agree that the US agents are more intimidating. The US ones make me feel like a criminal; the Canadian ones it just feels like test I forgot to study for.

All border agents are tasked with being thorough and professional. Be grateful that they do their jobs so well! The US agents have to be extra diligent with entrants because thousands of illegals attempt to enter the country every year!

You really need to NOT say "God is guiding your way" to the Canadian border guard. If you are travelling to say Vancouver, know your planned itinerary so you dont sound flaky when you are talking to them and where you are looking to stay because you raise red flags that you are trying to cross into Canada and not go back to the US. Do your homework on what you want to see in Vancouver (e.g, English Bay and other landmarks). US citizens think Canadian CBSA is not very friendly. Trust me, as a Brit that has travelled to the US and Canada, US CBP is far, far more unfriendly than Canadian CBSA. The comment I got from a CBP agent in Seattle was, "Your English is REALLY good. Where did you learn to speak so well? "I just summed it up for me.

Back in 1964 my family and I were driving from New York state back to the Midwest on a vacation. We were somewhere a little west of Buffalo, NY and my dad decides to head north. He just drove the car right into Canada, no border guards anywhere. We drove around a few blocks, got some perplexed looks from whatever Canadian town we were in and then drove back to the US. We were laughing and joking the whole time.
Things were more simple back then.

    Funny story:
I grew up crossing the Windsor/Detroit border all the time. Myself and friends would go to a lot of concerts in Detroit. Well one time we got stuck having to take the tunnel bus over. We get to US customs and I realize I had completely forgotten my ID. I thought for sure I'm getting denied (as this was post 911 when they cracked down hard on having a passport to cross the border, about 2004/2005) and to have to go all the way back to get my ID and try to make it back through all the traffic I'm missing this concert for sure. My one friend approaches the officer with me and starts begging this officer to let me enter the US and how she swears on her entire family's life I've never been in trouble with the law ever and this concert is a MUST see. He asks what I have in the bag I was carrying. I open it and let him know he can go through it, as it was just a bunch of chocolates and he can totally take whatever he wants from it....NOT in a bribing way what so ever, haha. He says to me, "I'm good. Wait, so you mean to tell me you REMEMBER your chocolates....but NOT your ID???" *Shakes his head* "Girl, I need you to do better next time. I'm going to let you through this ONE time. You enjoy the concert and your chocolates."
Then, when I had to cross back over I was really shiiittin my pants thinking they'll deny me coming back into my own country. I explained the situation to the Canadian customs officer and all he did was ask me my address I lived at and what high school I attended.

I drive a minivan converted into a camper. The main thing you need to do is have an agenda that you can tell the guard. Where you're going and when you need to return to the US. Telling them "I have to be back at work on X date" is very helpful as well. You don't have to stick to the agenda. And it's totally fine to tell them you have the car set up to crash in. You're "camping." I'm assuming they keep track of how many times you cross. I cross around the same time into Canada every summer. I'm pretty sure that helps. I usually say, hi, answer their basic questions, and I'm on my way. Usually in less than a minute.

Hi Allison. Having crossed the Canadian border many times, I can tell you many things. Some of the time my employer sent me across, other times I was crossing on my own time. I cross often enough that I have few any questions asked of me. I am always asked how long I will be staying and where will I be staying as well as what my purpose is in crossing the Canadian border. I always answer truthfully, but if I am on a road trip similar to yours (which I do sometimes), I will give customs an answer that will satisfy them like "Tonight I am staying at Harrison Hot Springs. I plan to be in Kamloops tomorrow night and then I am heading east from there to various hot springs. I plan to re-enter the United States through Montana around next Tuesday". Something like that. That satisfies them. As long as they know that I have a loose plan of returning to the U.S. within a reasonable time frame and I am polite and don't give them any attitude, they smile and tell me to have a good trip. I could tell you much more, but those are the basics. I hope that helps. God bless†

This seems to have been a very civil and polite border staff. Searching your car is analogous to searching your bags with a scanner and inspecting them in detail if the scanner shows something difficult to identify. They can't scan your car so they use a reasonable question format to determine if your entry is not the "model" innocuous border crossing. Having experienced border crossings in Mexico and west to east europe and turkey to bulgaria this seems very mild to me.

My friends, who had been detained, had not removed their full-face helmets. Wrong move. The longest delay I ever had was when we entered North Dakota, at Pembina ( south of Winnipeg, MB ). The U.S. agent was suspicious because I had my young son and daughter with me. My wife was unable to come with us. Yep, been there. I used to cross the border in my van going the opposite way and I was never stopped, barely even questioned. That was just after I bought the van, tires were garbage, rims were ugly, windshield had a bunch of cracks, the exhaust leaked from everywhere so it made a bunch of noise, I could go on, but it didnt look like much. Then I fix it up, really nice tires, new window, tuned exhaust, nice rims, 5 inch lift, light bars on the bumper and in the grill..... It looked like an offroading machine. Very first time after the fixes I cross the border the agent stops me for a while asking about everything, even asking questions about my family, friends and relatives. Sends me over to secondary and a few walk over to search it while I go inside and answer even more questions. Was there for a while, they never found anything, and off I went.

Thank you for showing this! She was very confrontational and that is rude but it is reasonable for border control to weed out illegal activity. I’ll make sure to have my story really pat and even possibly make reservation that are cancellable just in case.
You must have been really flustered but your sharing this really helps! 💜💜💜
The biggest issue with your case before it got escalated, I think, was you did not know for how long. When entering any country it’s important to say when you plan to leave. Two weeks is a normal vacation time so that’s what I think is expected. Canada feels like almost home but it is a different country. I think many still remember when all you needed was a US drivers licence to pass so it feels causal but I guess it not anymore. 😂

You can live/travel however you like, but if you're crossing an international border, you've got to be much better prepared than this and understand that the border agents are looking for definitive answers, not vague "I don't know anything about XYZ" replies. I've made that exact same crossing several dozen times. In all honesty, I'm surprised you didn't get turned back.
And my comments apply in both directions - north or south. Gotta have a purpose / plan beyond just "Well, I'll just go where the wind takes me." I'd suggest having everything documented (printed receipts/confirmations for accommodations, or at the very minimum some bookmarked websites with information about your destination -- ANYTHING that provides evidence that what you're saying is true.

They went through all my messages and contacts, asked how much I was paying for sex with a friend I was going to see. They offended me so much I told them that I'd rather just turn around and go home instead. Then he stamped my Passport and said Welcome to the USA. I left the crossing in shock and so upset and they popped a piece of my bumper off of the car I had to get fixed. You have rights once you are crossed into Canada/USA, but at the border crossing you have no rights. You do as they say, they want you intimidated so if you got something to hide you'll spill the beans in some way. Your attitude wasn't very good which didn't help, that said maybe your attitude may have been nicer then in your video. You may want to do your research better and remember you are a guest asking to enter the country, your entry can be denied. The same goes for Canadians entering the US, and US agents tend to be worse. Entering Canada by default you will be allowed in unless a good reason to deny entry is found. Canadians entering the US by default will be denied unless you can give a good reason for them allowing you in, that said normally Canadians can give a good enough reason and are allowed in.

She even SAID herself that the officer's questioning etc is justified and make sense but she didn't have the answers and was unprepared. It's understandable because she's never driven it, didn't know what to expect, and likely didn't realize the ins and outs of a land border crossing since her only experiences of it have been via airports.

Unfortunately we are often seen as an extention of the U.S. How many times have we heard Americans say they would move to Canada if Trump got in. (before he was elected for the first time) Maybe, just maybe, Canada will not accept their desire to immigrate. I just get tired of the belittling attitude towards Canada!
Sarcasm will not sell her videos on TH-cam and she may now get a lot less support from Canadians watching her videos. However, overall I find her videos disorganized and unplanned. Opening a bag of potato chips and tasting them on camera and giving your opinion, does not make you a Food Critic! Especially when you give some uncalled for sarcasm about what Canada eats. Or how the Restaurants and their menus are different.

CBSA were 100% correct and all their questions were legitimate. You need to search before traveling.

Is this a new thing that there are so many questions at the Canadian border? In 2012, when I was a teen we crossed into Canada and they only asked my dad a few questions, this seems completely different.

I going on vacation. 2 weeks. That's it. Bring no fruit or vegetables and certainly no meat. Make sure you have told them where you are staying in a campground, or hotel, or airbnb, and make sure you can show them info on that. Then you won't get hassled.

Just so people know, Cannabis is perfectly legal and regulated in Canada..BUT, you cannot cross an International Border with DRUGS, including cannabis.

You got a tough border agent, but they have them on both sides of the borders, I got in the US 5 months later after you and the border was about to close in March 2020. You have to just be as honest as possible, you sleep in your car just say it. I also got detained at the Us border entering Washington state. I almost got into an accident, they wanted me to drive true the scanner and I knew I didn’t fit in... next time just prepare your answers it’s important,😉 and its not illegal to sleep in your car!

"and its not illegal to sleep in your car!" In the US it is illegal to sleep in your car in many of the cities. That right there is the reason for her to be hesitant to admit this.

They want to establish that you have specific itinerary and are going to leave when these plans end. If you have no specific plans, it is considered a red flag (for better or for worse).

It is a shame that one gets hassled crossing the US-Canadian border. This is due to September 11.
In the EU, many of the borders are easy to cross because of the Schengen agreement.
I saw a TH-cam video about Frenchmen crossing into Germany 🇩🇪 for cheaper groceries. Germans cross into Poland 🇵🇱 for other cheaper goods.

Going into the US from Canada is not always easy. Last time in my VW van. It was searched and I was grilled. I was in my late 50s at this time. But a solo traveler.

A woman travelling alone seems questionable to them.
