Army sleeping bags keep you toasty warm down to -50 F. I think a -40+ sleeping bag should be the first part of a surving kit. It’s a double sleeping bag system. In Alaska in the winter, warm as heck sleeping outside in the woods in a huge snow drift. THEY REALLY WORK.

Agreed was in Alaska in 90's had the old style pickle sleep sleeping bag and stayed warm with no more than sleeping pad and am from Alabama. Some commercial bags are ok but over priced, trade off is weight but if car camping not as important.
I was in the Marines get a Military grade Sleeping Bag breath in the bag while your in it amazing.
I live in an RV fulltime on a ranch and this past February we got "frozen out" in TX and I had to resort to sleeping in my truck with my dog. I layered us with blankets, comforters and pillows inside my RAM and put 2 dog sweaters on her and 2 hoodies on me so we could sleep, but when it got to unbearable freezing point in the middle of the night, I turned on the truck heater for 1/2 an hour on full blast and that would last us about 2 hour's worth of sleep. I had to do that for 3 days straight! I survived though and am not afraid to do whatever it takes to keep us warm and safe!
My God what you’re going through makes me feel like a real fool trying to feel sorry for myself with Renal Cancer stag 4 an blood clots on my lungs that started off in a tumor on my Kidneys moved to the bladder the grew in my spine an went to my blood an formed spots on my liver an I’m looking for a job God grant me the strength to survive this cause it will only make me stronger an this was not my choice to be sick I want to work🙏

Oh not to worry Sharon! I'm living in a vehicle by choice. I started out inmy car and recently bought a van! But thank you for your kind message!
Sharon, a lot of bad is coming to us within a year, and sooner if bi den harr is gets in. More and more people are losing their jobs and then their homes. And quite a few are taking up living in their mini vans, trucks, mini care, etc. It can be fun but there is nowhere to take certain things with you. But it is true, the current thing is to live in your vehicle. It's not a bad thing. It's actually pretty cool to size down and live on whatever you can bring in in salary. It's a major trend.
@@davysanders4922 well, he did fight to keep industry here in the U.S. to save hundreds if not thousands of jobs, he gave up his salary to donate to multiple agencies such as Dept. of VA, small business administration, and Homeland Security just to name a few. To be honest I put up thermostat inside my car so I can look at the heat during the summer whether the black side is out or the silver reflective side is out my max that it gets in the car is 125° The difference that I noticed is that when you put the reflexive side is that the black doesn't get hot and the sun doesn't travel to the inside of your car and it heats things up but regardless the cabin still going to be hot just the items such as like furniture or interior doesn't get hit by a sun there for that doesn't heat up itself But you can still reach 125° It's just a lot easier to chill cuz you're just chilling the interior air and not the actual furniture that's being hit by the Sun.
What sun’s heat do you get at night?? During the day you’re basically OUT of the car to air it out and to de-cramp!
You don’t need the sun light to heat a car as it overheats even if the windows are covered - animals DIE in sun heated cars!!
AND you want your windows covered so NO light gets in - privacy is ESSENTIAL when living in your car!
It’s best to cover your windows with felt/flannel blankets - these permit some air flow while absorbing and blocking ALL incoming light, like from the glaring sun and police flashlights!!
Hanging them like a curtain allows you to easily take necessary looks outside - unlike those reflector blockers…

Tips my mom always told her kids. When sleeping outside (camping) layering cardboard flat under your air mattress for insulation will help you stay warn, When traveling in the cold or winter conditions, ALWAYS keep a large metal coffee can and some candles in your car. Store the candles and matches inside the can with a lid. You can light a candle and keep it inside the coffee can. It provides enough heat to keep you from freezing.

@H4s Grand. Cardboard is excellent. I crochet a plastic mat made from grocery bags for those sleeping outdoors. Combats moisture. Cardboard on top of mat.

Use a bees wax candles as the ones from regular wax burn off toxic chemicals. I always had one in car.....in a coffee can. Matches also in tin.
Liquid from candles are flammable.
My husband had to live in a car back in the 90s. We had a house but he took an entry level job 200 miles from home. It only paid 5 dollars an hour and I also made very little at the time. He had no choice but to live in his car in the far north of western Canada. That means 10 to 30 below Celsius. Don't know how he survived honestly.
On the up side though, it was all worth it. That job eventually led to the full time permanent position he still holds today. And he absolutely loves his job.

You’re struggles and foibles are genuine! I’ve been 2 weeks involuntary stealth camping (homeless) and nobody told me how expensive eating and driving would be.
Expenses of living in your car are completely up to you. If you get a small cooker, you can get by on Ramen noodles which is about 1 dollar per package, less if you buy it in bulk. May not be the healthiest choice, but it will prevent you from spending tons of money on food. And of course the more you drive around, the more you'll be spending on gas.
Get a cosco membership… you can’t beat the food prices
That's what concerns me. About to do this for few months to save money for a place. Eating is going to be a challenge - not eating out or eating fast food so I'm trying to figure that out
Completely ruined any thought of saving for me. You can't keep eating out. I bought a 2 burner Coleman, tea kettle, and cans of Chili, soup, and Ramen. The hard part is cooking outside in the wind and rain and cold.
Have too resort back to buying fast food and coffee again. It's just so hard and leaving me so depressed about life. I could get an apartment but it'll be about $822 a month and I just want to save that money, but living in a car just ain't cutting it. Always end up broke 2 weeks before my next SS check. I'll have to stop paying bills altogether now!! I figured I'd pay my debts while saving that rent money, but with food and gas, it's eating into my entire SS check. Is there no way of saving money? Not even living in your f-ing vehicle??

Since I was a little girl and it was cold in our house at night. I got under my covers with blankets over my head completely covering my head. Then the trick is to make a tunnel through the blanket/ covers from your nose to the outside of the covers. Usually about 4 inches. Making a tunnel keeps your own breath keeping you warmer as the air that passes to your nose is warmed by your breath in the passage way. Keeping the head covered is essential as it is well known that most of your lost heat is through the top of your head.
Yes! I've done this before. Probably not very well though haha! I like the nose warming tunnel idea.
I adopted a senior dog that was 9, and would freak out when I would see that he was under covers "too much" that he couldn't breathe and HOW ON EARTH did this Cocker Spaniel manage to tuck himself under covers like that? He's going to be 16 next year. He's taught me so much already. Sammy I s the one that's "rescued" me!

When your house is cold heat water and put it in a Clorox bottle with top put it at your feet, and you will be warm and toasty.
Problem is the humid air of your breathing turns to condensate and you get colder because you get wet. Learned that the hard way as a Boy Scout. A Gatorade or other heavy plastic bottle can be filled with hot water and put at your feet or other cold spots. Then in the morning you can drink it when your other water has frozen overnight.

For those who are just now watching this to figure out how to stay warm this winter in your car I have a few suggestions:
Wear wool to bed. Wool breaths better than cotton and will not trap moisture like cotton. Fleece also works.
Yes, keep your head covered. It makes a huge difference.
Wear a down puff jacket with a hood. It will help contain the heat better than one with just a collar
Wool socks... same reason as wool sleep wear. NOT tight wool socks, you WANT circulation flowing into your feet.
Wool scarf around your face, same reason as the clothing...and the socks.
A heat reflective camping mat on TOP of the air mattress. You want your body heat to be reflected back to you. Get a sleeping quilt system, not sleeping bag. In a car you have little space maneuver already. Zen Bivey is amazing and has cold ratings down to 10 F.
You can also use a hot water bottle on your core. Keeping your core warm will afford your body the the energy required to heat your limbs.
Keep your water bottle in your bed. Keep your water warm so it won’t freeze and you’ll be left without hydration or cold hydration that will cool you down too much when you drink it.
Keep your electronics in your bed. I know, I’ve heard of them heating up and blowing up but I’m thinking that is extremely rare. You can also make a little cozy for your electronics and NOT keep them in your bed with you.
Take magnesium before bed. Magnesium will help relax your muscles but also help out with heating you up inside. Do not take magnesium citrate....you’ll be running to the bathroom first thing in the morning.
Also don't stick your mouth under the covers and breath. It puts moisture in your cover's and when it gets cold it will make you cold. *VERY IMPORTANT!!*
Also eat before bed. Because your body needs energy to keep warm, just like feeding animals that are outside.

So we want that food to be completely digested to provide the energy needed.....or not? Just a friendly thought or suggestion/question whatever you want to call it lol 🙂

@@travelsnacks You might want to look into heated mattress pads. I've slept under heated blankets and I've slept on heated mattress pads and IMO, heated mattress pads are WAY better! Also, check this out for making super insulated window covers that will also give you more privacy and could help with stealth parking. It’s crunchy sounding, but put a survival blanket Under you between you and the air mattress.
Those Hot Hand's full body warmers are $5.95 at Walmart, don't be afraid to use several or the whole package. Strategically placed by your feet, legs, chest. They'll keep you comfortable through the night. A small price to pay to keep from freezing

Years ago I was homeless cold outside I was so thankful for my old car I used park car at motel parking lot next to truckers police came window one night asked why where here everynite we said we was homeless he felt bad said motel people don’t complain it’s ok so we used to be quiet one morning I got up said old saying if you need a job work at McDonald’s so I did and saved for apartment we prayed to god every single day I know that’s why I’m not homeless so to speak

You can cut insulation board from Home Depot, I think it's R-24 and it reflects the sun on one side; to fit your windows it's about an inch thick and it's easy to cut. It will cut down on the noise from outside and the cold air coming in.
Very helpful video. A couple of tips. Here in Canada, Canadian Tire sells an expensive but very good and roomy -40 sleeping bag. This thing is amazing and has plenty of room in it. Also, if you are able to to have an outdoor fire, put a good sized rock near the fire. Before bed, carefully roll the hot rock away from the coals, let it cool a bit if needed, then wrap in a towel and place in your bedding/sleeping bag. It will give off heat all night and keep you toasty warm. Don’t use rocks with cracks in them as they may burst apart with the heat. I’ve used the rock thing camping in the late fall, and it works like a charm.

I have 2 bags (one inside another) that I sleep in, and I place hot water jugs inside my sleeping bags. Wrap the jugs in pillowcases, they stay warm all night. Fill the jugs to 90%, then squeeze the jug to raise the water level to the top,then cap it. That creates a vacuum in the jug so it doesn't leak. That is how I sleep warm in my station wagon in sub zero temperatures. Pull your cap down over your eyes with your covid mask on to block light and keep your face warm.
You need a *personal sized* electric heater. I think it's called "My Heat" & it's about the size of a smart phone - just thicker. It's enough to heat a tiny space like a car & most importantly won't kill you. Glad to see you start off your night in a tank top instead of piling on layers because Les Stroud (the guy from Survivorman) said that getting all hot & sweaty in cold weather is pretty much a death sentence. He said pay attention to how hot you are & remove layers *before* you start to sweat.
Oh I'll have to check out that personal sized heater you mentioned. Sounds cool! Yeah I blast myself with heat early so I'm very hot when I first lay down. Layering is very good. Thanks for sharing this!

That's if you are outside in the wide open without shelter. Doing what she is suggesting is preserving the heat inside your shelter... it will stay warm for hours and slowly creep down to temperature. If you sweat and instantly expose yourself to freezing temps, your sweat turns to ice.
Truuue true... Avoid gettin too hot n for real try not to git sweaty. It'll eventually make ya sick, temp. Fluctuates to quickly.. Mainly cuz if you soak your clothes in sweat.. In any thing that ain't insolated, then your laying there in wet clothes in freezing temps. Bad combo. But dieing from the cold is real easy... You jus slip off to sleep. It don't hurt 🤔🤔so there's THAT at least hahaa speakin from expierance... It's super easy people's. If ya ain't gotta death wish then I don't recommend the snowflake lulaby 🤣🤣

The biggest problem is having to idle the motor and that burns gas. And my car is uncomfortable

So sad to think that being a person or family having to live in a car or van, is the new reality for people who have jobs! It's a national disgrace!
Research common law areas so you know areas that your car can’t be impounded for sleeping in it. Get a 24/7 gym membership and sleep during the day as it’s safer and less likely in some arguments to get caught if careful.
One thing about cold weather that many people forget is to stay hydrated. Drink water with a squirt of unsweetened citrus or berry before bed.
That's a good idea. And when it's really cold I like to drink some hot spiced tea or sleepy time tea. It helps warm you up and sleep too lol
Excellent reminder! Drinking water is very important. I'll admit that I drank very little water on the road because I hated having to try to find restrooms so often. But now that I'm gonna be in a van I'll drink more since I'll have a toilet. Thanks for sharing this!

@@wildchild1427 some of us don't have that option in the city, and covid shut down most of the 24 hour places. Not all 711s will let you use their restrooms in the middle of the night, I learned this the hard way.
My personal successes of car camping in the cold;
-Retain body heat as best as you can, if you're in a more populated area, spending time somewhere warm before bed is a good idea
- Sleeping bags helped me after only using blankets for months, and also keeping a blanket over the opening of your sleeping bag around your neck helps trap heat in the bag and your body gradually warms it up
- cayenne pepper and other medicinal herbs have a warming effect on the body
- making herbal tea before bed(also with warming herbs) allows you to warm up. I use a kettle that plugs in to my car, but sadly only works if driving. If you have the patience, you can make it outside with camp stove. Electric car kettle is super cheap, 15$. Even warm water, and eating warmer foods helps too, and some say cold foods should be avoided even in regular day to day life as they slow down the system
-ski mask. I have a fabric made one that is super thick and it covers my neck and head well. The nose cover is aggravating so I pull it down under my chin.
- I find personally (may differ for others) that other parts of your body tend to stay warmer if you secure certain areas well. My nose will typically stay warm if i keep my neck and head warm. Also head and feet tend to be the areas that release a lot of body heat
-breathing exercises and acclimating to the cold through exposure helps you build your tolerance
-reflectix window covers are great, they are thicker and can be cut to cover your windows perfectly. Get the larger size for certain vehicles because mine ended up being too small and had to tape smaller pieces to large cover
-make sure your car is as dry as possible, as humidity makes for a damper and colder feeling night. If anything spills clean it up and keep wet items well contained!
-I do tend to think anything that helps your circulation improve will also help with warmth, since your body will be functioning at high capacity. Some herbs(clover, licorice root, burdock root) help with that as well as doing small bouts of exercise. Avoid sweat as it will make matters worse overall
- have yet to try as it's a recent investment and now is warm, but I imagine that a 0 or below tolerant sleeping back would save the need for lots of precautions described above. They do tend to be expensive but I think it'll be worth it. I got mine at a yard sale, sometimes people who don't have time for camping will inform you of all the gear they have on hand and hook you up. I have a 300$ northface sleeping bag that I got for only 40$
Not just swollen ankles...but also blood clots! I’ve been living in my car for about 3 weeks now and found that out the hard way. Especially if you’re eating fast food every day. Stretch as often as possible

I camped in the Grand Canyon in winter for a few days (definitely in the 20s F) and found that a barrier of some type between the front seats and back seats helped so much in retaining heat. I just hung up an extra jacket across the back of the front seats.
I lived in my car for 5 weeks during winter time. It got in the -20, yikes. I used a sleeping bag that can take a -15 and I slept like a baby. I didn't need all those blankets. I would wake up by 5:45am and drive to Qtrip to pee and head to work early so I can get dressed. No one knew that I was homeless for a month. Honestly, it taught me that I do not need a lot of things after this experience.
The best thing in a car, van, tent, chair or wherever to retain the heat from below is a fur sheepskin. There are medical sheepskin, usually for baby crates. I put them under my bedsheet in my van. It's the best thing because it regulates the body temperature, keeps the heat in winter and cools in
Summer. Wool socks and beanie and buff. Fleece blanket inside of a down quilt. That's what keeps me warm in winter in my car-micro-camper.

Never thought that but kinda reminds me Amundsen used only inuit methods their stuff is battle tested they slept on seal skin ,Scott went to stores bought latest he froze not Amundsen on north pole quest.inuit ,bushmen ,bedouin all extreme climate folk.

FYI, when your through with the hot hands but it's still hot place it in a ziplock bag and remove all the air and you'll stop the chemical process and it will cool. Plus you can open the bag the next night and finish using it.

I was there about 3yrs ago. Did it for 1 week. I own a home now, but sometimes I fear in the back of my head that I would be right back in this space....On a Positive note: I did not do half of the things you suggest, so If Im there again I now have great advice on how to survive it better.
Slept in my car once when I was too tired to drive home, never again, definitely the coldest and most uncomfortable night's sleep ever.

If it's under 50 or 40 degrees, I recommend pulling the blanket over your entire head, it will keep you warmer all night, and you won't smother, especially if it's just one blanket. When I discovered that, I could sleep in temperatures below freezing and it never bothered me.

I really appreciate this. I camped with my son for a year and while still on the east coast at the end of October, it got cold at night. I ended up having to use stubby thick candles in a short glass holder to keep warm.
I’m working on my van and came across this video. I REALLY like your video! I’ve watched THOUSANDS! One thing I learned in 23 degree weather - the smaller place you have to beat - the better. Now, with a sleep bag, I have a little “tent” over my head. Toasty warm NO propane - that stuff scares me to death. If, you’re ever on the East Coast and need a place to park - hit me up!
Knitted nosewarmers are THE BEST. I made them for my kids. They grew out of them (e.g. not "cool" anymore) so I wore them. Awesome.

I bought a new van in 1974. For 10 years I traveled all over the USA. I basicly did what you do and in the cold-cold-cold I had to wale up at least 1 time to heat van. Blankets are the key. The right clothes too. I used sleeping bags. Thank you. Your web site is good.
I became homeless due to covid I just use a lot of blankets wear a sweater and my carhart coat stay nice and warm. Now if the cops would quit waking me in the night and telling me to move on that would be super

Lol. Try living in your car in the coldest place in Canada. -40 and lower for weeks on end. Never once got bothered by cops. Two years. It took me to get my life in order again. Depression is real. And most don't understand it.

Tea candles/ or other low profile candles in an old crock( removable crockpot) will keep the heat and warm the crock..used this in my tiny camper for three years...bubble wrap is a great insulator/ reflective stay warm stay safe❤️❤️ btw, I'm Native and if you come by a hide let me tell you, there's nothing warmer than a buffalo hide..js LOL

Pick up some Mylar emergency blankets....put them under the bottom sheet and in between the top....you could also be creative and use them on your windows...They don’t call them emergency blankets for nothing....They reflect heat away from them....Dollar stores have them, and they have window shades that are mylar if you’re interested....
p.s. micro fleece against your skin ie; hoodie, sheets, blankets....will keep you so seriously warm you won’t be up at 3 a.m. fr, fr, freezing....you may be super warm though....

I spent a cold winter in a small pick up truck. I figured out the staying warm thing. My problem was sleeping upright and not being able to stretch my legs out. It was horribly painful after a couple months and quite maddening.

That’s my biggest issue. Right now I have no option but to stay in my car and I’m getting absolutely terrible sleep. I keep waking up and having to stretch my legs and right now it’s so cold and I can’t afford to even buy more blankets until I get paid next week. Also my body aches like crazy during the day because of the limited space.

Wool is your friend. Even one wool blanket as close to your body as you can stand is so much warmer than a pile of synthetic blankets. Wool is also breathable so you won't get clammy.
You might want to invest in a portable jumper for your car battery; it eliminates the need for jumper cables, however, it's still a good practice to keep the cables in your trunk. The small jumper can also charge your cell phone or whatever small rechargeable electronic devices you possess. You can recharge the battery starter unit with your Jackery. In a car with very limited floor space your Mr. Buddy heater is potentially dangerous. You need a perfectly flat space with enough surrounding space that a potential fire is eliminated. Even with the "cup holder" for the heater it can still be knocked over. I have the medium sized Mr. Buddy Heater but will never use it in my Jeep SUV; it's for use in my tent and with an audible alarm carbon monoxide detector as well. Occasionally, while overland camping I will sleep in the cargo area of my SUV with the back seats folded. I'm 5'7" and I have plenty of room to stretch out. Your insulation tips are excellent and I use some of them as well. It's just as important to insulate beneath you as it is on top of you. I've slept in single digits temps but occasionally turned the car on to warm the interior. Allison, I understand your lifestyle and why you love to travel. I was born in a military family, traveling worldwide, then I served 23 years traveling on five continents and after retirement moved to Maui to travel the Pacific Rim. The "bug" is in our blood, the desire to travel, meet and make friends, eat exotic cuisines, see and explore. Now that I'm 73 my desire is to modify my SUV and travel around the United States and Canada. I wish you luck and hope you accomplish whatever you desire. Just be safe. Take care.

I agree. The portable jumper cables are a must! I have one in every vehicle. I still have regular jumper cables in all vehicles as a back up but, it's so nice to be self sufficient. Having AAA is smart as well.
Ok try to use phone to see cold spots in your car .. I think on the driver and passenger under the rug there are holes there for like water damage..insult the trunk use a old quilt or stick on linings ... You have to check for cold spots that way it's Easier to keep a lot warmer..Lastly get a king size blanket that you can throw over the 2 front seats all the way to the back window and make a nice warm air pocket with your body warmth.. A good used full length fox fur coat would keep you warm without any supplementary heat. If you want to camp in your car get a winter weight sleeping bag and some double reflective silver bubble duct wrap under the sleeping bag. I would skip the heating blanket, they can catch fire or fail when you need them most.
Never never use one of them propane heaters in your car. They consume oxygen and give off carbon monoxide. Cracking your window is not enough, just never use this in any confined space.

Ive slept in the ol' minivan a couple of winters. It sucks that it didnt have heat AT ALL when I got it. Scraping the frost from your own breath off the windshield every morning sucked haha
Actually CO readings are negative when using a gas heater in a confined space, like the buddy heater is perfectly safe I use it in my cabin every day of the winter.
I also use a propane heater. ( Little Buddy) . I use it with a carbon monoxide detector in my sealed in truck. Never had my detector go off. Super warm as well.

@What it isn't I run my heater all night. I have an adapter that connect to a 5 gal propane tank. One thing that I do is I have a USB fan that I set up behind the round little Buddy that blows the hot air coming off the heater. So it's not just rising in one spot and burning my truck camper. Works amazing.

I slept in a 1996 R model Mack. Put a plywood plank or board on both seats. Had a pillow. Did from 96 to 2001 when they gave me an internal Eagle with a big bunk. What a difference.
I am going to add... Hot water bottles. You can fill them up with hot water in a bathroom at Walmart or fast food, other places.... Make sure they are sealed well. Stick them in your bedding, while you find your place to park and sleep. Bed is warm when you get in. If you keep then close to you and under covers, they'll stay warm and so will you most of the night. I've used one, and move it around in the bed to warm all areas before I get in. Then place it against my back while I sleep. 2 might be better.

Excellent suggestion! I haven't had experience with hot water bottles but it seems like it would be cozy. You would just need a place to heat up the water. I have one of those traveler mugs that warms water so this would work for me. Thanks for sharing your experience! Blessings to you!
I had several winters in an apartment with almost no heat. A sleeping bag with three blankets pulled over me like a cocoon kept me pretty warm.

Having throw rugs on the floor helps big time !!! Rev living in the SNOW has taught me that one 😂😂 The better the throw rugs, the more they hold the heat in but even cheaper ones are better then nothing! !! It takes the edge off enough to make them an esintal in my book.

Another suggestion is finding somewhere like a garage to park your car at night. The garage will protect your car from the snow and the car creates a small space to act like a bubble. The air between your car and the garage wall is like an insulation but don't turn car on with a closed garage door
They kick you out -- even if it's during a blizzard!
If in an area where snow is coming down ALWAYS be sure the tail pipe is NOT blocked by snow build up, if you are running the engine to stay warm.
The carbon monoixe will back up into the car if the exhaust pipe is bloc ked

Yep; I've long held that a little 12 volt electric blanket and a small Jackery will keep you warm all night, and a Road Pro oven will keep you eating hot food in the daytime--it makes sense to eat hot food when you're trying to keep from freezing. As you say--cover windows, make sure there's good padding under you. I spent some time going over the road with a partner who was a trucker; being comfy on the road is easy if you know how, and truckers know how. First thing to do is hit a big truck stop and browse their appliances section! :) btw--even better than an electric blanket is an electric mattress pad. The heat rises up from the mattress, your blankets trap the warmth in, and the side you're sleeping on stays toasty all night. Try it :)
When layering blankets, if you put an afghan under a quilt, you would be amazed how much warmth the pockets of air will hold. I don't know how it would work in a car, but on a bed, I found the best layering method was: sheet, afghan, blanket(s), then top with a quilt. I do recommend having at least a sheet or a thin blanket under the afghan. That combination seems to provide the best insulation, in my experience.
I use to work third shift so I wouldn't be out in the midnight weather...

I keep warm with layers to when camping in colder weather, I also wear a stocking cap on my head to keep my heat in, it works great. You need a face mask (hat that covers face but has holes for eyes & mouth) to keep nose warm.
I lived in my truck with 5 dogs from 2007 to 2012. I never used any heat at night, because my dogs kept me warm, to where I only had to have a pillow and a thin blanket to cover with. I ALWAYS used sunshades for all 4 windows. I even now sleep in my Smart car with one dog every now and again, i put three pillows on the seats to create a bench, i put my feet on the passenger side and lay my upper body on the stiringwheel side... My Smart car is very small, but i can always lower the passenger seat sofar that I used it for sleeping as well. I never have to turn on my car to warm it up. I even use small juice jugs under my covers, to keep the water for my morning coffee from freezing and so my dog has water to drink.
I also go to Walmart parking lot to sleep...truck stops are also good to sleep at...but as always, BE CAREFUL...
I used Velcro on my window frame and on my cut up sheet to hang on the windows for privacy. Or cut up some older sunschields to fit the windows and Velcro Them to your windows...for added insulation in your vehicle.
I now carry an extra deep cycle battery in my car for my CPAP machine that i use with a 175w inverter and the battery lasts me one week just for my CPAP machine. I am going to buy me a 100w inverter and try it with that, since my CPAP only uses 90w of energy...
I have also purchased a solar panel battery maintainer, but it won't work unless I can direct wire my cigarett lighter to my battery.
When my car is shut off, the cigarett lighter won't function either.
Plus i have a suggestion to make for any car owner...as seen in this video, if your battery is dead your Windows don't work either. Get a car with a hand crank!
I used towels ober the windows when i lived in my blazer and it kept the heat in so much better. Also had those double fleece blankets. I slept through a snow storm one time, woke up with snow all the way up past the doors.

If you can get ahold of an alpaca blanket or sweater,buy it. It is lighter than wool and it will warm you so much better. Also the polyester thick and fuzzy are very warm.
Use large bubble wrap on your windows , keeps cold out , hot in , I use it in my apartment windows

Spray Mist water to the window and plastic bubble side and lay bubble side against window, hope it works for you 😊
Get one of those tiny, triangle shaped backpackers single person tent. By putting your bedding inside, and sleeping in it, you put a bubble of fabric between you and the car cold. The tent holds your body heat in, and the chill mostly out, once you warm up the inside of the tent.
I have lived in a car with a broken heater in double digit below zero temperatures, as an anemic, small person who gets cold super easy. Key word in this video - cocoon. Cocooning and having options for external sources of heat if you need it like hot hands or a hot water bottle. Expert pro tip - candles. Granted, you need to be smart about fire safety, ventilation, etc, but you'd be amazed how much a three wick candle (much less two) will heat up a small space.
My experience from years in the military and sleeping in the open with no tent......an insulate mat to sleep on with a poncho liner and poncho over top. Worked pretty good in Minnesota, Norway and Germany in the middle of winter. A little bit of tweaking should do you good
I love the nomadic lifestyle, I definitely can’t do my car so I’m going to get a class c rv and tow my car but being able to be a nomad can be done in any way that person loves so you go! Omg, this video is so amusing it warmed up my attitude about life. I’ve been living in my van for over two years and it generally sucks. But the peace from money stress is worth it. Jackery charges at work. Propane heaters or bunk heater work. Another must is a gym with a shower. I think my insulation was over kill, the summer are worse than the winter no ac in the cargo area. Good luck save and invest the money not being spent on rent because this is not a long term solution
I have a little buddy and I love it. I have a small SUV. Took your advice to get a backseat airbed. It's coming in a few days. Little buddy its in the back. Has a safety shut off it it tips over. But yes...definitely...you need ventilation. And BTW....I'm 68!

Definitely is some great ways to keep warm in the car but will add this, try placing a blanket across the front of the car (from the dash to the floor). Reason being, most of the air comes from the engine compartment through the firewall, may help some.

About swollen ankles. When I was homeless and living out of my I took pictures of my feet when it started to swell and on days it wasn’t swollen and it’s a dramatic difference. I wish I could share the pics but I definitely think you should touch more on that topic especially since it involves your health

Has nothing to do with the front seat. You’re just in a upright position day in day out. Take for example people who work office jobs, they take walks or have a device to roll their feet on to help with the swelling but imagine if sitting all day was your life all day. And I lived out my car for almost a year so yea the swelling was just getting bad even with taking walks but it’s hard to explain to other people who haven’t lived through experience since some might not understand it or might think it’s not a big deal
Another option is to get a low degree sleeping bag & open it up & use it like a comforter - I found a good 10 degree bag with flannel lining and kind of a heavy cotton / canvas outside. It is also bulky too, but could be a bit warmer than comforter. But, advantage to comforter is it can be washed at a laundromat.
Compression bags will cut down on the bulk when not in use. Check camping gear section.

I also experience the foot/ankle swelling issue when I lived in a car. It's called peripheral oedema. It's no joke, but it's not permanent, assuming it's treated without delay. Treatment and prevention are pretty much the same thing. #1 Avoid sitting. Spend the vast majority of your time on your feet or horizontal. #2 Do some walking every day.
#3 Be patient and persistent with #1 and #2. Recovery may be slow but these are just good basic habits for life; they aren't super strenuous things to do.
This reminds me of my Dad telling me of growing up in off grid farm house and upstairs bedrooms were unheated,ie pulling clothes you will wear under covers.He was born 100 years ago.

I grew up traveling all over America due to my dad’s work. Never forget your wool socks, wool blankets, beanie and mittens! Wool blankets are a bit itchy so be sure and layer it in between two blankets, the heat that you retain with wool is amazing! And wool will still keep you warm even if it is wet. Wool socks are the best! Most are very soft and comfortable and keeping your head warm is very important,hence the beanie and the mittens are nice when you are really in some below freezing weather. Also starting the engine to warm up every 2-3 hours is a good thing as well but I have managed to burrow down in my wool blankets and stay toasty warm all night. All this I learned from my mom. Thanks mom❤️🌹❤️

Hi! Love your idea about the electric blanket. I have a Jackary 240, but never thought it would power an electric blanket. I also have the Little Buddy heater. Mine has a button I push to ignite the gas rather than using a lighter...maybe mine is a newer model. Stay warm. Winter is here!
@@damita4336 Of course one should never use any propane appliance- stove or heater - if one plans to sleep or nap. And, using when awake, windows must be open a bit for ventilation. My "Buddy" is used to knock off the morning chill so I can get up. Making a cup of tea on my single burner stove warms things up a bit, too. 🥰

I travel for a living and very often sleep in my truck. I bought a Browning mummy bag that is AWESOME! I woke up in the mountains of Utah one morning it was -5 degrees. I never got cold or ran the heat.

So I had to live in my car for a few months in the winter. Was living with an alcoholic and I couldn't take it anymore couldn't sleep from her yelling nonsense at 3am so I made a decision I'd rather sleep in my car.. yes thats how bad the alcoholism was.. lol so a trick I found was great is buying a pack of hand warmers. Crush one up and put it inside your sleeping bag and it works absolutely great. Especially if you have a good 20 degree bag. Works when camping in the cold as well. And they tend to last 6 to 8 hours. I actually woke up hot at times and had to take layers off. And never run your car while sleeping in a snow storm.. a young couple got stranded on the side of the road during a massive storm and they fell asleep with the car running. Then snow built up around the exhaust and they both died of carbon monoxide poisoning. Was very sad they were like 20 years old. Be careful out there! I hope everyone watching this quality of life improves ✌
My friend don't be scared. Fear is just because of 2 things. You're leaving your comfort zone and then the unknown. But break it down logically. Your going to live in your car and its going to be temporary. Your not going to starve your not going to die or get hurt. You will be fine. Its going to suck a little you might be depressed but you will be fine. Work hard and you will get yourself out of this situation faster than you think. This is temporary remember that. I personally use a wool type ski mask, some times in conjunction with an old navy Sherpa hoodie, and also use a vehicle remote starter set for 20 minutes with the heater on high one or two times when I wake up freezing in the middle of the night, but crack my front windows open slightly
Hello and good day. I live in my Nissan Sentra. In my first winter and funny so far the jackery, heated blanket, layers to sleep on with a comfy blanket, while in sweat pants and hoodie are working its only gotten down to 28. The nose blanket haha. Love the ingenuity. Such a good spirit and personality. Have a great day and stay warm!

Good stuff . I have never been warm sleeping on an air matress . For the nose thing I just lay a t-shirt over my face it works great. If you can, look into getting a jump box for you car battery. Covering windows is a big thing . I got some of the blue yoga mats from wal-Mart and cut them to fit my side and back windows I just wedge them against the glass in the window opening. The yoga mats can be put between the seats and the doors to improve the cocoon effect and keep you feet warm Also eat it will keep you warm too.

Great tips and advice. I had to do exact same you did ,for 18 months straight. Although my vehicle is a little bigger (SUV) and 4 wheel drive. Yes , winter car camping was a challenge but, managable . I have a Coleman heavy sleeping bag with a car power heater blanket underneath. Also a power pack for jumpstart battery and power a small portable plug in car heater if worse case scenario happened . And after being in a blizzard (18 degree ) temps. my car battery was drained ,wouldnt start.So power pack jumped it to life,just barely . Thanks again ,great video.
