VOLVO 850...awesome....on the pub...if you dont pay crap wages to exploit foreign staff but pay decent wages to local people to serve really well cooked British sourced good food you have to pay for it...blame the Tories for printing £500billion and Labour for what comes next....
James May’s pub in Swallowcliffe is a great country pub selling excellent food. Guy Richie’s air field is just up the road, you could spend up couple of hours watching light aircraft then a quick sprint up zig zig hill then off to the Royal Oak for lunch
Next time pre book and call in at British Motor Heritage for a look see, Mgb and Mini mk1 body build in production, all the old original tools and jigs still in use, Only 3 miles from Clarcksons Pub.
The Volvo 850 is the last true Swedish Volvo ever made before the Ford penny pinchers took over and eventually sold it to Geely. It has galvanised sheet metal body , hydraulic cam followers and proper thick valve stems (making them last a looooong time.) It is also modern enough to be a safe travel car to use for family duty bcs it has ABS, Side impact protection system (SIPS) and TRACS. NL is a Volvo country. And i see these 850's with 400k to even 500k km on the odometer. I have owned a T5-R. When they first came on the market the lease rate for them was pretty good, so good in fact that company car drivers switched from low spec 5-series beemers to a full spec T5 or T5-R. I bought my T5-R used and privately. The only serious maintenance that i had to have fixed was a leaky rear main seal. That's it! And (back then) it was fast. 240hp. I remember dragracing a Calibra turbo which is way lighter and it couldn't win. I also remember hounding an aircooled 911 Carrera on the German autobahn. Good fun! The only serious design fault on the T5 and T5-R is the size of the front brakes: 285mm diameter. For such a fast and heavy car they were too small! Later the 850R got 10hp more and 305mm front brakes. Better but still not perfect.
Hard Knott pass is a "Did it and survived" type road 33% on the straights and hairpins even steeper... Driven it quite a few times over the years and even cycled up, when I was young and fit...!! 😂
