The one million mile Volvo was a Volvo 740 from 1991. But i think the Volvo P1800S from 1966 that was driven by Irv Gordon, he put 3.2 million miles on it is the coolest of them both!!

I've got the Yamaha 4.4 V8 in my XC90. Lovely engine. One of my favourite little known Volvo stories is that, before they chose Yamaha to build the largely Volvo-designed V8, Volvo approached Cosworth to build them something special for the forthcoming S80. Cosworth delivered a handful of prototype engines which were essentially two 850 engines joined at the crank. It was a 4.3 litre naturally aspirated quad cam V10. The best part is, Volvo fitted 5 of them to 850 mule cars and did a bunch of heat soak testing around Gothenburg, so there were a bunch of 850s with enormous V10 engines shoehorned under the bonnet driving around Sweden in the 1990s. Wild. I wish at least one of those cars had survived.

@@maciejgajoch1774 I think you're thinking of the early transverse 6 cylinder engines. They were too long to fit with the standard Aisin-Warner automatic transmission, so they fitted a smaller General Motors box, which was too weak. Later iterations had a shorter inline 6 (SI6) engine, allowing the stronger Aisin-Warner shifter to fit. I haven't heard of any problems with the transmission on the V8, other than it needs a fluid change every 100k miles or so. Mine's a little overdue at 140k miles, but still smooth. Will probably get it done at the next service.

@@JamesFieldI cant speak for @maciejgajoch1774 but it's a know issue with the xc90's or at least for 2007. I'm pretty sure that whole generation was at risk. Not sure if it was due to lack of proper maintenance or maybe due to abuse. But I had a friend who was an independent Volvo mechanic, and when I was considering an xc90 because of that motor. He warned me about their transmission. He said the vechicle was still great. Of course I understand that hasnt been your experience. Which is more valid then me not having any experience, with xc90's totally understand that.

Some 200 and 700 series came with VW D24 straight diesel inline 6.
The 960 had Volvos white block 3.0 or 2.5 Liter straight six which also became the inline 5 cylinder for the 800 and the S/ V and the C70.
The 800 and 70 series MK1 also had Audi/ VW inline 2.5 Liter 5 cylinder Diesel engine until year 2001.

Regarding Diesels, Volvo didn't have their own Diesel engine until relatively recently. The various RWD bricks used the Volkswagen inline 6 Diesel, known in Volvos as the D24. The small RWD cars (340) used a Renault-sourced 1.6 litre 4 cylinder Diesel known by Volvo as the D16. At the start of the FWD era, the smaller cars (440, S40) continued using Renault 4 cylinder Diesel engines. I had a V40 with the Renault 1.9TDI engine many moons ago. In the 850, they continued the VW relationship, but used a 5 cylinder Diesel unit from Audi in keeping with the 5 cylinder petrol engines. It wasn't until 2001 and the P2 platform that Volvo developed their own Diesel engine, called the D5 (because it was a Diesel with 5 cylinders). It was largely based on the "white block" Volvo Modular Engine design, which gave the 4, 5 and 6 cylinder engines from the 1990s through the 2010s, and it was even called the Volvo Modular Diesel Engine, even though it was only ever offered as a 5 cylinder. 4 cylinder Diesel engines were offered later under Ford's ownership, but these were Ford/PSA engines the same as the Ford TDCi and Peugeot HDi units.

Love the old blocky ones. As for second-hand buying, it seems to vary a lot - you can find battered ones from private sellers for around £1200-£1500 but if you want immaculate, you are paying collector prices of £15,000+. (Particularly popular is the epic 480 with the flip headlights but I think the US effectively banned that feature for some reason.) If you want a standard manual petrol estate from a trade seller, you're probably talking around £5000. (Export to the US would probably be around $2000.)

I saw a lot of 1800s in your search results at the end there. Beautiful cars, made famous by Roger Moore in "The Saint". As someone else has said, an 1800 holds the all time Guinness world record for high mileage cars at 3.2 million miles. I personally preferred the shooting break estate/wagon version, the 1800ES. The style went on to inspire the 480 hatchback in the 80s and the C30 you saw in the power video, all of them having the all-glass tailgate. The 1800 was also the main inspiration for the "Volvo Concept Estate" and the "Volvo Concept Coupe" - the latter of which eventually saw production as the Polestar 1.

With the old RWD bricks, I favor the petrol ones, as those are the Volvo redblocks, the diesel is a VW engine from the old Vans/trucks VW used to make just called LT, in the 240 it's NA, the 740 gets a turbo, and the 940 gets turbo and intercooler, so if ya wanna go for a diesel, go for the 940 one.
Also, one of the first clips with a 240 on a skid pad, it had an engine swap.. a V10...
I've owned a few 240s myself, so they have a special place in my heart, but you get a model in the US of the Volvo S80, with a Yamaha V8 engine, and you could get them with AWD, so an AWD V8 Volvo luxury sedan... we didn't get the V8 in Norway, maybe a few special order, but they're very rare.
And on the Volvo hatchback, the white one was a C30, the rear end is designed that way as a homage to the P1800 wagon/hatchback/shooting brake, but in the 90s there was another FWD Volvo hatchback which I kinda love, even if it didn't have proper Volvo engines, but it was a Bertone designed hatchback Volvo with pop-up headlights, the Volvo 480, which did come as a Turbo version as well.

I prefer petrol cars, and I would convert my car to run on lpg as well.
The pros of lpg converted cars are:
    - lower price for fuel than petrol or diesel
    - the lowest emissions of ICE cars (lower co2 than petrol and wayy lower methane levels than diesel)
    - the range of your car expands drastically (sometimes exedes the range of most diesel cars) because you have two fuel tanks in your car
The only obvious con is that you can't get it at every petrol station.

The old box car, 3 digit models I believe the second digit was the cylinder count. So 140 was 4 cylinder, 850 5 cylinder and so on. There where 760 and 160 etc with v6 engine. 850 was also the first front wheel drive afaik.

    • @NorwayVFX
      @NorwayVFX 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

For the most part yes but they did mess around with the numbering a few times.
The Volvo 360, 460 and 480 had inline 4 engines. The Volvo 780 was a 2 door version of the 740 with either a V6, inline 6 diesel or an inline 4.
Back in the days with the 100 series and early 200 series, the last digit represented the amount of doors as well.
142 was 100 series with inline 4 and 2 doors.
164 was 100 series with inline 6 and 4 doors.
      245 was 200 series with inline 4 and 5 doors ''estate/wagon''. etc

    • @thebigandthesmallthings
      @thebigandthesmallthings 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

As far as i remmember it is like this:
In old days - from around 1966 the numbers were assigned as follow:
142 was a serie 1 with 4 cylinders, and 2 doors, they also made the 144 and the 145
Then there was the 164 where it was an inline six
      242 was a serie 2 with 4 cylinders and 2 doors + there was the 244 and 245
The 145 and 245 was the wagon.
At the end of the 2 serie, they stopped using the number of doors in the digits, so it became the 240 and 260.
The last one to mention the number of cylinders was the 850, which later was the foundation for the V70.
The new numbers indicates if it is a Sedan, a Wagon or a Coupe. S, V and C (V for versatility) and the number refer to the platfom: e.g. S40, S60, S80, - the bigger the number the bigger the platform would be.

5 cylinder started with the 850 in the early 1990s, before Ford. Ford came along in the early 2000s and basically bought Volvo for the P2 platform (S80 at the time, and later V70, S60 and XC90) because it was so ahead of its time. But you're right that it started with the FWD cars. The design brief was to have an engine as smooth and powerful as a 6 cylinder, whilst still being able to fit sideways in the engine bay.

Hello, i have been watching your videos for a while and i am quite the Volvo nut, i own an 850 turbo and a 240 sedan myself, and the general rule of thumb with Volvos is if its a 4 cylinder petrol car made before 1995, its RWD. if it its a 5 cylinder petrol, its FWD. Though the FWD 5 cylinders are not as loved as the RWD cars, they are still incredible cars and definitely worth looking into (especially an 850 Turbo/T5/T-5R/R). Though it is tempting to jump straight into one of these Swedish boxes, i recommend looking deeper into the dedicated communities with classified pages to find one that's perfect for you, as these cars (240/260740/760/940/960/850) are most definitely NOT WORTH anything above $10k and beyond. Most ok condition RWD 80s Volvos are somewhere around $2K - $6K from everywhere I've seen, i implore you to do some further digging on finding the perfect one for you.
