I did a black island once. ONCE. Turns out that my white dog sheds a LOT. Also turns out that black shows dust worse than white. For it to look decent, I had to wash it from top to bottom. Horrid, HORRID color choice for a kitchen. Never again.
It’s really difficult to do a black kitchen correctly. It’s definitely not a child or pet friendly design 😅
@@mrphoenixgreyThat and also if you actually use your kitchen to cook. It's a nightmare color for a kitchen. It looks cool though
We bought a house with black granite countertops and I'm so excited to see how I fare
I agree with the armless sofa. Don't prioritize design over comfort. I had a custom made one and quickly I realized I wanted a couch with arms so that I and my guests would be comfortable. I donated it and bought a couch with arms.
Far too many people want their place to look like a showroom, and you can’t live like that!
@@mrphoenixgreyvery well said.
I'm happy that somebody finally pointed out the impracticality of dining benches. I love hosting and adding a bench to the dining table immediately creates inequity.
I would LOVE to see a video on how to design around a TV! I hate when a TV just sucks in all the energy and focus on a room, like it's the only thing that exists in the space
Same! I would love some tips around media wall❤
I agree with everything! Those extended bed frames look too much like the old water beds back in the day. And yes, I had one. 😅 And just say no to Lego toilets!
Hate those extended platform bedframes tripping, bumping shins, and bulky
I am so with you on vessel sinks. I am remodeling my kid's bathroom and the cleaning of a vessel sink just looks to be a nightmare. We're going with cultured marble sink & vanity countertop, with the sink cast in the same mold so no edges between the sink and countertop mounting for mold to grow. We're even doing the faucet as a wall mount so you don't get that black mold stuff around the base of the faucet.
Thank You, I HATE Dining Benches. When I go to other peoples homes & they have these everybody avoids sitting on them & heads for the chairs. It reminds me of the game we played as children, musical chairs.
I’m going to swim upstream and say that I love vessel sinks. Not the salad bowl, copper or pebble variety. My vessel sink is square with sides slightly angled outward, almost trapezoid in profile. It catches all the splashes and is super easy to clean. I do agree with everything else you said 😊
I will admit, there are some decent looking ones! :)
I also love my vessel sink (Villeroy & Boch My Nature) and would always buy it again! I live alone, for me it’s at the perfect height, looks beautiful, and is actually pretty space-efficient
I had no idea square toilets were a thing, lol. Can't wait for the next video!!
There’s a lot of questionable things that exist in the design world that I question everyday 🤣🤣
Square toilets - for LEGO people.
Had the misfortune of having to use a square toilet for a week while in a hotel on a business trip…. It was uncomfortable even when I only had to pee. Maybe a guy could handle it but it wasn’t lady friendly.
I'm such an old man sometimes. When looking for dinner reservations, when I see benches like these or low backed chairs at tables, I'm like no go lol.
We just bought a platform bed without measuring the bed or room. It’s for a guest room but it’s a tight fit because we went from a double to a queen bed. The worst part is I know better. My cousin is a 30yr pro interior designer in LA, I’ve taken interior design classes and have done measuring/ space planing for this house before. But the showroom got me. Sooo no more buying, a “beautiful piece” at a “great price”, without measuring even if it means driving hours back to Highpoint NC to bring it home if it fits.
You cannot clean behind the vessel sinks properly. The silicone then gets very discolored too.
Another point to add about them! 🙏🏼
My husband works for a general contractor who has had so many designers who put these type of elements into these homes. One architect is attempting to win an award with a super impractical design. It is so crazy.
armless and low back sofa. i dont know why people choose low back sofa since i need to rest (?) both my back and neck on it
I love the banter between you and the film crew 😂
Always keeping it real 🤣🤍
Same! 😂
Thanks for this! I really appreciate the explanations of just why some object is impractical, as it's not always something that would occur to me immediately.
Thank you so much! 🥰
I love all your impractical design choses and can’t wait for your next.
Thank you so much for watching! It means so much 🤍
I admit that I really like the look of vessel sinks. But once you start thinking about actually using them, I definitely would not get one. But they look cool.
They’re are som really gorgeous ones out there! I’ve been tempted too, but I’ve lived with one in the past and they’re more trouble then worth 😑
everything you said is true.. i always prioritize functional over aesthetic..
What a fabulous video! From impractical beds to black kitchens! I have a black kitchen. For every water splash, grease stain, it is totally worth cleaning my kitchen every night before bed. Top to bottom, counter top, faucet, backsplash! I wake up and so enjoy my beautiful kitchen in all its glory.
Love these videos! So needed. We are in the planning phase of building our dream home and so many inspirational home floorplans have walk in closets adjacent to the master bath. After watching your previous video on how impractical that is, we immediately changed direction on this decision. New subscriber!
Yes, my home had a walk-in closet right next to the shower, already in place when i bought it, and I have no idea what to do about it.
Pretty good tips. The one thing I'll say in defense of vessel sinks is that they free up space in the cabinet below the sink. I have a rectangular porcelain vessel sink that came with my house and while I agree it's not as good as undermount sinks from a usability standpoint, it's not bad because it's still a full size sink bowl. I do agree that the smaller vessel sinks you see are horrible, specifically the small glass ones.
BTW, love the Cartier Santos you got.
Thank you so much! And great eye! Thank you 🥰🥰
I agree I have a vessel sink in an oval black and I love it I opted to place mine off centered that way I got more counter space. It works great and lookd beautiful
But the cabinet has to be shorter, so no real gain there…
Oh daddy!!! I painted my kitchen a dark grey-green and it's gorge..except around the sink area where daily water drops are a menace to my sanity! Repainting to another lighter color this fall
Design Daddy Approved! 🙌🏼
These tips are all suggestions that we may consider or not but I believe, this is transparent enough to make us understand the pros and cons of a specific design. 😉💯
Design Daddy, referencing LED lighting, I'd like to know your thoughts on using 3 side-by-side LED, anti fog, dimmable mirrors above an extra long bathroom countertop. The counter is symmetrical with a sink basin on either side and a make-up station in the center. The counter is the exact same height from one end to the other, so no drop down for the make-up station. Imagine 3 arched mirrors with one centered above each sink basin and one centered at the make-up station in the middle. I plan to use a vanity stool that allows me to adjust the. height. Your thoughts and recommendations are welcome. Thanks.
😂 the LED strips in a condo building. That’s my neighbor and it’s absolutely terrible. I find them incredibly tacky (unless used correctly as you’ve noted) but mostly a NO.
Oh and always a NO on vessel sinks. THANK YOU for making that bold statement 🙏
In so glad I have so many other in my side for these! 🙏🏼
@@mrphoenixgrey I’ve recently watched many of your videos and you’re spot on with all your advice-in my opinion of course 😉
🤍 Keep inspiring us all! 🖤
I loved my last house with black stained cabinets. I found them easier to clean than my painted white cabinets.
I agree with most of these but I am putting in a dining bench in my current renovation.
I have limited room and 90% of the time it's just my husband and I. When the kids and grandchildren are all here , we need more room because there are 16 of us. We need the extra seating and I don't want to be storing a billion chairs.
It's usually kids in the back and it works for us.
Agree except I once had a rectangular-ish shaped toilet, it was comfey and I loved the look.
There are some good ones that can still be comfortable, but typically they are much more expensive 😅
Give us the 2nd part, Phoenix! These were great tips that will save people a lot of grief.
I Love everything about your vids!
Thank you for another great one!👍
That means so much! Thank you for watching 🤍
Yes!!! Did you pluck this out of my head? I so agree with you on every single thing…especially vessel sinks!
Thanks so much for watching and glad I’m not the only one that thinks this way 🤍
New subscriber! Love your videos so much. You always make me laugh and I learn so much. Please do more videos about what decor is not practical and will not stand everyday use. Everyone always shows things that look nice but don't last.
Thank you so much! And welcome 🤍 have lots more to come, so stay tuned! So far we release a video every Sunday, but looking to bump it up to 2 a week
I got a vessel sink, I cant stand the bowl type. I took one look and admitted I dont clean enough to keep it looking nice. I opted for a square porcelain that sits flush on the vanity. It works for the tiny bathroom I have and its easy to clean around. Loved all your tips. ❤
I laughed so hard at some of your comments because I agree with you and could just picture every description you made. I enjoy all your advice and your explanations of why
Thank you so much! And I’m glad you enjoyed 🥰
I am in the process of a total remodel of my home. Can you please elaborate more on the black kitchen. I want to use black for my bottom cabinets and neutral for the upper cabinets. Great video as usual!
I used standard contractor grade cabinets and stained the oak black. You could see the grain and they were forgiving for splashes. I have dark painted cabinets now, not black but a dark grey and they are constant maintenance and you realize just how much food flies around when you're cooking. My partner bakes. I'm constantly trying to get flour out of the corners of the cabinet doors. 😂
Thank you for the video! Could you give us tips for designing a public hallway in a building (carpets, art, mural wallpaper, etc.)?
Adding to my list 🤍
The vanity in the main bathroom in our next house is 30 inches high. i'm 4'11" and that critter is too low even for me, so i thought a vessel sink would be perfect. The sink is a drop-in, though, so the opening wouldn't work for a vessel 😭😭But i've been seeing these recessed vessel sinks, which look to me like a hybrid of the vessel and the drop-in. i'm not sure if that would work, but i hope so, because otherwise we're going to have to raise the vanity, and that is going to be a major pia. Excellent video, as always, DD. And just look at how fast your numbers are going up 😊😊
In your case you’re good then! I know it can help for individuals that are shorter. And thank you so so much! It’s growing really fast. I’m so happy my knowledge being shared is being received so positively 🤍🤍
You're going to have your own posse pretty soon,@@mrphoenixgrey 🥰
Yeah, a ridiculously low vanity is why I put in vessel sinks. Many years later, we’re finally going to renovate that bathroom, but it was a decent stopgap. The lower sinks would have been good for our son when he was very young- I’ll give them that- but they were just a hassle for adults and older children.
@@whiteserpent6753, what kind of modifications did you have to make to your vanity top?
The platform bed is an absolute TERROR for the shins!
I’m so glad I’m not the only one that knows this! Haha it had to be apart of this list 🤣
@@mrphoenixgrey now I have a dupe of the Nathalie bed by Flou. Why the dupe, apart the price? Because it is smaller than the original, so it fits my space, and it is padded all around and my sheen are safe and I have a container under the bed. And I can change the color of the bedframe. I had it dark blue, now it is greige
Whose who created vessel sinks should be prosecuted. I didn’t install them but I’ve them at home. Definitely changing them out.
Been waiting for the next one in this series!
Have plenty more so stay tuned 🤍
Some GREAT advice. I'm in the process of renovating my folk's house (I just inherited it and am moving in) so this came at a really good time for me.
I’m so happy I’m able to help :)
Everything you state is always correct!!!
Another amazing, informative video!
Thank you so much! So happy I can help 🤍
Thanks for the video. Love what you're saying. Can we please get a video on low maintenance everything? That's my retirement house goal 😁
Excellent suggestion! Adding to my list for future videos 🤍
Wire cage containers giving dogpound inmate vibes 😂😂😂😂
...some of us make design choices so guests don't over stay
Oi! We've just bought a vessel basin to go in our new bathroom. It's literally a big irregular shaped lump of stone with a smoothed hollowed centre. And it's going to look smashing.. I'm sure 😮🤔😅
I like wire storage inside cupboard 😂
Also, whenever i think of these "inpractical" design I always think of that women who has a show on netflix, her husbands call syd, i think shes shea, but that maybe their surname, anyway, watching her program definitely feels like design over practicality, you only have to watch the one where they do out a little camper using MARBLE TILE to know shes aesthetic first 😬
Another must see vid before you buy!
More to come 🤍
I can't stand vessel sinks lol
Love your videos. Question, what do you think about rugables?I believe there the rugs you can put in a washer.I Think they are dumb.
I tried for wire cage storage ONCE. Huge mistake. Then we got cats. EVEN BIGGER MISTAKE… hair on everything
Didn’t even think about the cat hair for this! It’s a magnet 😅
Thanks for your advice. Does a window seat on one side of a dining table fall in to the same category as the bench seat? Wanted to do this to open up the flow of the area and fit more bums on, but can see the issue with people getting stuck in the middle, although there would be back support 🤔
Unfortunately, it still leaves you with the same issue of if more than 2 people are sitting on it, it makes for the awkward middle Individual have to get someone to move to get in and out 😔
damn, okay. Thanks for the hard truth :) @@mrphoenixgrey
Considering a black kitchen.....
I personally love them! Currently designing 2 black kitchens for clients and can’t wait to share the finishes construction. There’s a certain way to do it to make them more functional 🤍
@@mrphoenixgrey Yeah please do. I want a black kitchen too.
❤❤❤❤ Love this video!!! Heyyy Design Daddy I’m fairly new to your channel and I’m loving all the truths you’re telling about the design world. Love that designers like you are telling people the truth about impracticality of some design ideas. Yes, they’re beautiful in magazines and catalogues, however that’s where it should come to a halt and be more practical and livable. I’m weak at “high maintenance bitch” 😂😂😂😂😂
That you so much for watching! I always say a great designer takes consideration of both function, and aesthetic. Because let’s be honest we’re leaving in those spaces and it’s not a magazine photoshoot everyday
What are your thoughts on armless accent chairs? I have two Barcelona (knock offs) chairs in my living room. While they look beautiful I’m not sure they’re practical for guests. Love to hear your thoughts.
Armless accent chairs can work, they have a more causal feel to them and since it’s one single person on them yoy don’t have to worry about the discomfort of awkward sitting in the middle since it’s designed for one person
@@mrphoenixgrey So you think we should keep them? My husband thinks we should switch them out for accent chairs with arms.
Every day “sit” point?
I love you laughed out loud!
Thank you 🤍 so happy I can bring a laugh or too about
I'm waiting for number 3
Already filmed! It’s in the que for editing 🤍
My toes hurt just by looking at those platform beds.
The muscle memory from hitting my shins is relived every time I think about it 🤣
Blasphemy - Glass sinks are tasteful. Salad bowl? 😭
I don’t know if this video was meant to be hilariously funny. But when you got to the square toilet . . . . It topped the armless sofa by a mile for a laugh.
And the wood frame around the bed, what a nightmare to make the bed, and keep the area clean, plus it’s fugly & definitely won’t age well.
It was meant to be! Haha I’m glad my humor was well received 🥰
Bravoooo🎉, said love't
Awww I have an all black kitchen with 4 kids, a dog and a cat and it’s gorgeous. Maybe we just used a really good paint 🤣 but I have no issues with dust or excessive mess. Super easy to clean too!
Could you elaborate on what kind of sheen for your black cabinets you have ? I plan to have my new kitchen in black too.
@@nathalie_desrosiers I used an eggshell finish with SW Black Magic. Use the Super Paint. I painted the walls with SW Urbane Bronze in the same. 😊
@@Harley24986 Thanks! ☺
He Phoenix, Seats without armrests and with a low backrest, I really hate that!! I love comfort, easy and comfy sitting. And in my opinion that is only possible in a chair with armrests and high backs!!!! Fuck trends ;-) XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Pinkie
Phoenix, I think you need to talk more. You need to go to some and party or something and talk for hours and hours and hours. I think it would do wonders for your speech. But I love our videos. You do a great job giving good advice.
Let me tell you 😊.
We’re gunna make it a thing 🤣
😂😂salad Bowl
Best way to describe them 🤣
Why does RH consistently intro ridiculous home decor. It is something that they try to do on purpose or are they just out of it.
Ms. B. Churchill
I think they do it on purpose. I personally am not a fan of RH and how they up their prices by over 300% 😑😑
Vessel sinks are so ugly!!!! I hate them so much.
♥
Thanks for watching 🥰
I think that circle beds should be a thing.
A friend inherited a circular king sized bed from her in laws and it was interesting. A beautiful bed with all the 70’s aesthetics, red, quilted, wooden. But they couldn’t get bedding for it unless it was custom made. putting it against the wall meant you lost floor space due to the curved headboard. It was hard to place nightstands next to it and it was a paint to clean up the extra dust bunnies where you can’t easily reach along the wall due to the curves. They kept it for a few years because we were all 20 something and broke but ditched it asap. We laugh about that bed to this day.
@@dimplesd8931 Thanks.
I could not live in a home with extre minimalism! I don't even like warm minimalism. I am too eclectic for that! To me it looks like a prison.
May I add something about black counters that New Yorkers know? You know what I'm going to say: ROACHES! Roaches prefer a kitchen with a black countertop. And what sucks is they blend in so well with the black...and they KNOW it! You have to turn on every light and stare closely to realize: "Oh, hell, my black counter is moving." Just a little note from fan who has been plagued in Hells Kitchen ever since the landlord "upgraded" our counter to black granite.
This is hilarious 😆😆 Also it's the first time I've seen anyone mention roaches camouflaging on black countertops, so I'll keep that in mind. Thank you!
Forget minimalism you're not saving time on shitt.
You love the word “actual” / “actually” as a filler word. Count how many times you say this…….arghhh
I enjoy your videos, but please put all the errors you make in the process to the end of the video as a blooper reel. They are so distracting because we come to watch the content that's in the title and it helps when things are done smoothly. thanks for the content, I hope I didn't come off rude. It's just a suggestion.
