And here's another little something that happened outside of WWE: 2009 marked the pro wrestling debut of a young, up-and-coming talent by the name of Masami Odate, who, after floundering about for a couple of years in Japan's independent wrestling scene, made her debut in 2013 for World Wonder Ring STARDOM, where she would reinvent herself as Io Shirai, and become perhaps the biggest star in the promotion's heralded history. In 2018, she decided to leave Stardom and sign a lucrative deal with WWE, where she has once again shown why she is the best women's wrestler on the planet.
Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania, Shelton Benjamin vs. Christian at TLC, Rey Mysterio vs. John Morrison at Smackdown, and DX vs. Jeri-Show at TLC were my favorites of 2009.
I think the WWE title / Smackdown chamber match is better than the WHC / Raw chamber. The final stretch between HHH and Undertaker is a nice preview of the Wrestlemania double feature.
Hidden gem of this year, John Morrison vs Evan Bourne from the ECW episode, after that year's draft. That match was a classic, yet heavily ignored by WWE for some reason.
Survivor series 09 was the first live event I ever attended back when I was 9! That reaction when Shawn kicked hhh was insane. One of the best nights ever.
Never understood why people complained (and still do) about all the Orton vs. Cena matches. It's called a feud. It's not meant to be one and done. Plus, those two were both absolutely huge at the time and if you can't appreciate that, you don't know good sports entertainment!
I'll always remember a few years later, Cena and Orton tried to do a stare down in a rumble kinda like how Austin and Rock did, but not a single soul cared in the audience. It was met with absolute silence.
Obviously nothing beats HBK vs Taker Mania 25. One of the best matches but also the best match ever and the best Wrestlemania match ever(I know I know, people love Wrestlemania 40. I do too but I still pick HBK vs Taker Mania 25).
Taker vs Michaels was undoubtedly the greatest match i ever seen. It had the greatest kickout of all time when Shawn kicked out of the tombstone when Taker even crossed his arms. No one at that ever kicked out of the tombstone.
Here’s mine 10. Jeff Hardy vs edge extreme rules 9. John cena vs triple h vs Shawn Michaels survivor series 8. Team triple h vs legacy backlash 7. John cena vs Randy Orton breaking point 6. John Morrison vs Rey Mysterio smackdown September 5. Raw elimination chamber match 4. Rey Mysterio vs Chris Jericho the bash 3. Smackdown elimination chamber match 2. Jeff Hardy vs cm punk summerslam 1. Shawn Michaels vs undertaker wrestlemania 25
Cena Vs Orton at Breaking Point wasn't just the greatest Cena Vs Orton match of all time, IMO. To this day, I remain convinced that their bout at Breaking Point was easily the greatest I Quit Match of all time.
i agree and it's a shame the great dx vs legacy summerslam match didn't make this list it was also the last match(not counting 2010 rumble)hbk would have against both Cena & HHH before hbk retired
I could’ve sworn the Randy Orton vs John Cena feud was at least a year long! They did it so much in such a short time that I never want to see it again.
Dx and legacy cena and Orton SummerSlam Jeff Hardy and CM punk Hbk vs the undertaker and yet people still wanna act like nothing good came out of the Early PG days 😂😂
DX the RAW after Survivor Series 2009: Triple H: So uh, what was with the KICK last night? HBK: It was-it was-for the championship. I'm sorry about that. Besides, I figured you were gonna pedigree me first anyway. Triple H: What? Was not! HBK: I knew it! You WERE! You were gonna pedigree me! Triple H: Alright...yeah, but d-don't try to turn this around on me! You kicked me THREE TIMES last night! The first one, I didn't even see it coming! The bell rang, bing, WHACK! You took my head off! WHAT WAS THAT?!?!?
That was the year i started watching pro wrestling and i was in 6th grade but it was late in the year since I didn't get to watch any of the other matches and had to deal with the guest hosts of Raw and the bad storylines afterwards
Man I totally don't remember that TLC 2009 was the first ever TLC ppv. I also don't remember that Extreme Rules 2009 was the first ever Extreme Rules ppv damn.
When we saw "Best" and "2009", we ALL knew HBK vs Taker will be Number 1
Might as well cut to the chase
Of course it's one the greatest match in history
Yeah
I mean, it's easily in the top 5 of that decade
It’s one of the top tier matches of all time in WWE’s history.
And here's another little something that happened outside of WWE:

Edge walking in as WWE champ and leaving as World Champ at no way out still blows my mind to this day! 🤯
Canadian Wrestlers + ladder matches = 👩❤️👨
Indeed. Almost every Canadian wrestler known to this day has had an excellent ladder match
And Shelton isn't even Canadian, and he's a master
Shawn vs Taker WM 25
Best match ever
I think the WWE title / Smackdown chamber match is better than the WHC / Raw chamber. The final stretch between HHH and Undertaker is a nice preview of the Wrestlemania double feature.
Agreed
4:41 “Pub quiz answer Mike Knox” 😩😂🤣💀
2009 was the year I got into wwe at 14. I remember all of this vividly. Good times
My brother even had that game and he doesn't follow wrestling. He liked Punk
Hidden gem of this year, John Morrison vs Evan Bourne from the ECW episode, after that year's draft. That match was a classic, yet heavily ignored by WWE for some reason.
That was a great match. I think Matt Striker, on commentary, blurting out “Match of the Year?” didn’t help it.
2008-2009 was the year of Jeff Hardy
I do miss the 2000s.
Me too. 2009 was the last good year, cuz it went into the PG era.
The issue was it was a little too much and really over saturated the feud
@@CharlesHitmanStone Maybe a bit much at the time, granted. I miss those matches now though!
@ oh absolutely. It doesn’t matter how long it’s been. I’m still not fully used to Cena and Orton being the main attractions of the WWE
Most of their matches are boring
I'll always remember a few years later, Cena and Orton tried to do a stare down in a rumble kinda like how Austin and Rock did, but not a single soul cared in the audience. It was met with absolute silence.
Good picks bro
Easy when 2009 was an amazing year for wrestling matches in WWE
Obviously nothing beats HBK vs Taker Mania 25. One of the best matches but also the best match ever and the best Wrestlemania match ever(I know I know, people love Wrestlemania 40. I do too but I still pick HBK vs Taker Mania 25).
Taker vs Michaels was undoubtedly the greatest match i ever seen. It had the greatest kickout of all time when Shawn kicked out of the tombstone when Taker even crossed his arms. No one at that ever kicked out of the tombstone.
Hardy vs Edge Extreme Rules is one of my all time favourite matches, glad to see it so high up on the list
2009 a year i am fond of ❤🎉
Ricky ''The Dragon'' Steamboat - his stuff with Chris Jericho was delightful.
Here’s mine
10. Jeff Hardy vs edge extreme rules
9. John cena vs triple h vs Shawn Michaels survivor series
8. Team triple h vs legacy backlash
7. John cena vs Randy Orton breaking point
6. John Morrison vs Rey Mysterio smackdown September
5. Raw elimination chamber match
4. Rey Mysterio vs Chris Jericho the bash
3. Smackdown elimination chamber match
2. Jeff Hardy vs cm punk summerslam
This was a good year in wrestling and graduated from high school also that year
this my era right here
2009 with Cultaholic
This was the year for me, got into it and never left
happy new year guys, 2010 is gonna be a great one
I never heard of Crazy Frog. I didn't even know Kardashians existed yet, except for Kim, because she sang at Mania 24
Jeff Hardy had many great matches during this period
That DX and Cena triple threat is so good. Immediately hooked 10secs in.
i agree and it's a shame the great dx vs legacy summerslam match didn't make this list
it was also the last match(not counting 2010 rumble)hbk would have against both Cena & HHH before hbk retired
The year I began watching wrestling!
Christian's ECW run is highly underrated! He was having banger after banger every week!
The ray vs morrison match was one of the first matches ive ever seen live while watching at home
4-5 things out of a whole year, do you see the problem? Also, 2010 is what broke wwe not 2009
DX the RAW after Survivor Series 2009:
Triple H: So uh, what was with the KICK last night?
HBK: It was-it was-for the championship. I'm sorry about that. Besides, I figured you were gonna pedigree me first anyway.

I enjoyed breaking point
I Was Busy Watching TNA Wrestling At The Time.
Yes!
Lol. I remember the spot from Backlash 09. I legit thought Cena died I was 7 at the time cried my eyes out
HBK & Taker with a match for the centuries
That was the year i started watching pro wrestling and i was in 6th grade but it was late in the year since I didn't get to watch any of the other matches and had to deal with the guest hosts of Raw and the bad storylines afterwards
Speaking of ECW, did you know that JBL shot on the Blue Meanie?
Just by the title I know taker vs Michaels is number one
Stoping an ECW title match for some blood is so ironic. About the only bad thing about Christian vs Shelton
Best match of 2008
Ah my childhood.
I remember it was stamps
CM Punk vs Jeff Hardy was top feud in 2009
me : it 's obviously Hbk vs taker at mania 25 again ?
CW : obviously
I don't care what anyone says. Wrestlemania 25 is in the top 5 of all time
Constant Cena/Orton matches is what ruins 09 for me.
Man I totally don't remember that TLC 2009 was the first ever TLC ppv. I also don't remember that Extreme Rules 2009 was the first ever Extreme Rules ppv damn.
Yup 2009 was the year it all started, the gimmick PPV's
I don't feel sorry for Rey now, for losing to Cena. He screwed Nic Nemeth. It should have been him!
I once gained 10 pounds and relized it was just a big fart. One big push and about 17.6 seconds later i lost those 10 pounds. Fin
One of the worst periods in wrestling history.
Last Man Standing match was way too high. It was a PG match, they couldn't do much.
Dogshit year, no wonder why UFC was dominating around this time lol
Santina is one of the best party's of WWE history and anyone who thinks differently is crybaby
