It's not the TH-cam I remember when I started 10 years ago where an everyday person could become famous overnight. I'm tired of the continue funneling of what's obvious paid placement in suggested video lists. I never see stuff from the core HARD WORKING community anymore. Shame on you..Shame.

I love to watch (and frequently watch) creative videos, DIYs, videos where i get to see the TH-camr's personality rather than a popular video produced to gain views and all, but they're never recommended to me - only very mainstream videos that I really dislike. Over the past few months the recommended page has been useless and quite a pain as it is no longer effective for myself personally, leading me to wonder if this whole "data collection" "super duper effective" recommendation thing really works, or if its just pushing certain types of content or certain people? Hi Tom, on a future video can you please cover TH-cam Ads, using AdWords I have tried spending quite a few dollars on Ads. But there is never results I only get the views but 0 interactions, 0 likes, 0 subscribers it's like bot views. on average organically If I get 1k views there is like 20likes+ subscribers. But when using ads it's like nothing happens just views and no interactions.
I have just ONE question for TH-cam, and it has always been the same through the years: we all know you need at least 100.000 subscribers to get that verification checkmark, however how come A LOT of channels do have it even though their number of subscribers is way less than that? Even this channel is verified, but it is just at 12K. Yes, I know a lot of channels were able to get that in the past just by asking their networks, however, how come so many channels with the verification mark have just recently been opened? Like in 2016. At first, I thought they were like "official channels", recognized by TH-cam. And so you, Creator Insider. But then I look at the description, and you say: "Please note this is not an official TH-cam channel and is an experiment". Ok, so.. How did you get that verification checkmark with less than 100K? I'm asking to everybody, since I see some in the comments as well. One guy is just at 4K subscribers and has a verification mark. What's going on here?
I have a TH-cam channel about two years and had a daily audience of 120,000 hits. more than a few times before that same audience fell to 10,000 visits a day. what may have happened to my channel, I do not know why grateful!
I have two channels. One which is suffering from the algorithm and one which is benefiting from it. I guess since there are so many variables and so many changes happening so frequently, we TH-camrs can only create our content to the best of our abilities and hope for the best. From a Creator's standpoint though, it makes TH-cam a platform that is rather volatile and a career choice we don't feel confident we have much control over.
I have one channel with over 80 videos. Some videos get 1000's of views and some videos get next to no views. All of my videos are good it is just up to the algorithm.
i have been trying to make my videos reach people one of these days i think i will take off but honestly ive been a youtuber for over a year and havent gotten far lol
@@MalluStyleMultiMedia omg after four years. The future does not bode well for me. I think the only reason I made it was far as I have so far is because I put my all into TH-cam and like nothing else
Hello. When will the studio for video editing appear, with the addition of text to video and music? And also the addition of a video in the video and the ability to model video in various graphic versions. Transitions, sound and so on.? I'm from Russia.
I'm glad to hear that you cannot "buy" your video to appear higher. This is probably the most important factor for the broad success of TH-cam. That creators get rewarded for their creativity rather than anything else. Thanks!
I basically just learned that my programming doesn't match the TH-cam algorithm because it's long-form, and viewers who seek out such content are a minority. Huzzah. Long-live the majority.
I think the Algorithm doesn't imply to your channel because the first thing that I notice is that you have Verified Tick sign in front of your channel name and you only 12K subscribers.
You offer the opportunity to translate the title and description of the videos. But if we do a search with the terms translated we do not find the videos. Videos are referenced only for the first language. Not for other languages. It's a shame because all of these efforts to translate the videos are ultimately useless.
Indeed: my channel is multi-lingual. depending on the content or the language spoken, the "video language" can be either German, English, French or Spanish. I therefore take the trouble of offering title, description, subtitles in several languages, sometimes even more the then 4 I just mentioned. And then, when I view the analytics, I note that that effort is often of no avail.. Therefore: I agree, there should be better connection between youtube search and and the content/description of a video
From a creator standpoint the largest frustration I have is: why will my most watched video experience raging view peaks at seemingly random times only then to completely dry up to nothing at other times (when literally nothing else changes with the video!)
I found once after searching something a list with suggested similar words that others searched (or something like this) and I think is a great feature, I would love it to be permanent
I'm completely sad with this new algorithm. I had multiple videos go viral literally gaining 6-7k views per hour then suddenly in a single hour have them drop to 500-600 views per hour. It happens so frequently that it almost feels like it's on purpose. Like how exactly is a video supposed to fluctuate that much in such a short period of time? I had 4 videos do the same thing in the same day almost at the same time. I truly question the honesty regarding this algorithm because it saddens me to see that small channels, have less chances of growing on TH-cam now unless they are literally uploading content related to other big TH-camrs or music from popular artists like Reaction videos.
Please make something about age restricting videos that respect everything about Community Guidelines. I have videos that were age restricted which have absolutely nothing offensive in them and when i do an appeal i get no explanation just the same copy pasted message : it may not be appropriate for a general audience. Does someone actualy verify these appeals?
you have people who are over-advertising on my channel. The problem is the people advertising their product or video dont set an impression amount so my channel is flooded with the same " wix build your own website" over and over, my viewers complain about this all the time, can you please look into setting a FORCED Impression amount per viewer so my viewers arent so upset with the massive ads?
2 min in..."less watch time and more of did they like it or not"... YES! Hit the nail dead on because I am a Creator, YPP member AND a TH-cam watcher, and I couldnt agree more. Reason why being that I love a great deal of content that I cannot always finish watching, at least not at the moment being a busy mother of 3 lol. I still thumbs up or save for later to support great creators and great content. PLEASE do indeed pay more attention to that note and not just watch time 😊👍
I've been really enjoying seeing the deep dive into all these different categories. Thanks for all your time. This process overview has been very technical as well as informative:
So what you do is push what you want the subscriber to watch even if they subscribe to something else, you won't show them what they have subbed to so why have a sub button at all?
So according to 4:42, new algorithm now looks not only for watch time. It also looks for Likes, Dislikes and Comments to suggest video or rate it upper on the search. Is this correct? Because for long time TH-cam experts like Derral Eves telling us that, likes, dislikes and comments mean nothing for the robot. They are only tool for viewers to communicate and engage with the channel. Thanks for your answer.
Hey Tom and Todd! Thanks for the insight on how things work "inside" YT. There's one question I struggle to find an answer to and it didn't really come up in those three ones of this mini series: If a channel is "old" and hasn't been used for many years and then the creator decides to upload more frequently (really start the channel) - does "the algorithm" judge the channel by it's average performance over all those years or does the over all performance of a channel not influence how the algorithm treats the later uploads. (If You need an example You could look at my channel since I was on YT almost "from the beginning" but only really started grinding a year ago.) Keep rocking!
Paid Trending? Yes there is, but its external to youtube. If you know a publicist and they have contacts in the online magazine sites or newspaper editors, they can embed your video several stories. Many know actors, they have them retweet your video for some favors. Yeah, publicist rule the TH-cam trends.
Do not say that in Russia the third largest flow in the world, as your employee said at one of the events. But in Russia there is no technical support for authors as such.
Speaking as a consumer of youtube, not a content creator, the "not interested" option becomes like a game of whack-a-mole; I'll continuously say I'm not interested, but it just keeps popping up over and over. They keep pushing things that might be passive/veg out entertainment, but not a lot of new discoveries of stuff that I would like or get hooked into. Like, the same clickbait infotainment stuff will pop up, and I feel like youtube is giving me a homework assignment or something. But then I'll watch stuff that I do watch but isn't optimized the best by the creators (like, say, old Sesame Street videos, or well-done essays) and I'll always have to search for the content instead of it popping up organically. I think it's frustrating and leads to a disappointing experience.
I spend just as much time watching suggested videos on my Home Page as I do with my subscriptions. The more I watch on the Home page, the better the suggested videos get. And I get to experience something slightly different and a lot of my new subscriptions come from that page. It has gotten to the point where I almost feel we are on the same page to my interests. I think that is pretty neat. Though a suggested video on Laziness popped up last week on my page and I took offence. Like TH-cam was talking to me. Ha Ha!
Das Video startet und die Erwartung ist hoch... genau so hoch, wie die Vermutung, dass es eine Enttäuschung wird. Schade, dass es keine deutsche Tonspur hat.
One thing i expect from a video that is being promoted on my dashboard is not having so much background noise. Otherwise it was my first video watched on your channel and i subscribed.
i don't mean to be rude but it sounds like youtube is become a mall, you have to walk past all the shops you don't want in order to reach your destination and by the time you get their you forgot what you came in for.
Where do we find anything new or any changes you have made. Do you let us know. Why do you never reply to a question other than pointing us to another section which still does not answer the question. Please do visual demonstrations of what you talk about in your help section
What about the value in recommending content people don't know they like/want to watch, like when a consumer finds a product they had no idea they needed? Should you also not recommend videos with content type/format they may not have watched before? Would that not increase TH-cam activity and engagement as per TH-cam's overall goal?
I agree with you . thats all bs. I want to start a free something like this but with freedome and backing up the usa constitution. . anyone ready tk help me i got 10k Lt start
Please help me understand this: Why are you putting so much effort in trying to "GUESS" what the people want to see, and surveys and this huge mess when there is simply the SUBSCRIBE button, how about you make people SUBSCRIBED to a channel the BIGGEST indicator that they are interested, it is as if Subscriptions on TH-cam right now has the absolute LEAST importance, when that is the answer all along
Ok, I have a query about your “iPhone metadata” example. So a video that uses ‘iPhone’ in all it’s titles/tags/etc won’t necessarily rank in search because you don’t just look at metadata but also at how viewers respond to the video. I understand the importance of using both sets of data but surely if video doesn’t show up for it’s intended keyword in search then no-one will be able to see that video to have a positive reaction for it. You could have the greatest video about iPhones the world has ever seen but it’s stuck at the bottom of the search results and since very few people will dig down far enough to find it it'll probably stay there. Seems like you’ve built yourselves a bit of a Catch-22.
That's my thinking as well. It's a shame. When I type a keyword or keywords, I want the most relevant video regardless of anything else. On the other side of the table as a creator, my videos now get 1/2 the views they used to, since this algorithm overhaul. It's sad because I've worked hard to improve and make my content unique and now it's getting shuffled to the bottom.
I've been on TH-cam for 10 years now, creating content. Whilst my videos over the years have never "blown up", they've never struggled to get out there. Now with the Algorithm nowadays, content creators especially the small ones are experiencing growth stunts. I believe the Algorithm and the Sub boxes have some problems with them. PewDiePie has over 57 Million subscribers, he is currently the largest channel on TH-cam, but when you look at his view ratio compared to his subscriber ratio, that's very minuscule to say the least. Another example is I have 575 subscribers, which is no small sum by any means, but when you look at how many views I get 10/575 views per video, isn't fantastic, hell sometimes my videos struggle to reach 10 views. The sub box most definitely isn't working. I tested this by subscribing to myself for 1 month and every time I uploaded, it would take 2-3 DAYS to reach sub boxes, bare in mind, my alt account was only subscribed to the Destron channel. I myself have also been told that my videos do not reach sub boxes or get recommended. A suggestion on how I feel like TH-cam can help out channels: a discover tab. Instead of giving more publicity to the big boys that aren't struggling in the slightest to get views / likes by putting them on the Trending tab, make a discover tab; this tab can filter for what people are looking for. An example: I want a new gaming channel to watch, that's under 1,000 subscribers, enter those details and the algorithm searches the database to match those queries. I get that big channels make TH-cam more money than a 500 subs channel would, but think about this, grow some big channels, then more people will see more ads and then we all win.
Well said. I have more than 5000 subscribers, but getting 100 views on new video is a task for several months. Also my channel is getting thousands of views every month, but only about 150-200 views come from subscribers. I don't get it :D
Feedback loop just mathematically prioritizes the same famous creators again. Other Creators that may have had low counts, but improve their content would still have almost no feedback loop value. This means that they will always be devalued by the feedback loop. Have you ever heard a song and hated it? Then after a while, you love it? Feedback loop would never give the small creator a chance to be loved by someone new.
Can they tell us what are the different types of segments that they monitor, so we know a general type to pick who we can target? For instance, he said there's "casual users." What are the other types? Thanks!
Algorithm is broken, I get a comment every five comment that goes like this "this is the best video guide I have ever seen" or "I can't believe this video only has a few thousand views" it gets frustrating putting out these ridiculous hours and effort just to see someone with click-bate and a bunch on nonsense content get a few hundred thousand views in the first 24 hours of uploading.
I know this may fall on the wrong ears but I figured i'd ask. Has there been a shift in the new Machine learning for demonetization? Seems myself and others have been hit with another wave recently and with no obvious cues as to why things have been demonetized I'm thinking it may be something new picked up by googles advanced machine learning that's misfiring.
They have recently rolled out an appeal process for "soft demonetization" (the yellow $) and the way they train the algorithm is to make it strict at first, then have it learn from appeals. So there is definitely a wave happening right now.
I have and sadly (and understandably) it was far too vague to be helpful with the machine learning being too "dark" on details. Right now false positives are just too rampant.
The answer is no, the only thing that was changed is that they are being more transparent and revealing to creators which videos have limited or no ads based on certain kinds of content that may not be suitable for all kinds of advertisers. 2 days ago I had 91 videos get the circular yellow dollar symbol... did the algorithm suddenly misfire on me and thousands of other channels at the same time? ...No, as I read the article and understood that this was likely already in place behind the scenes at least from when the "adpocalypse" occurred and what simply occurred based on creator feedback was that it was "revealed" to thousands of channels at once whether certain videos were in a limited category or not as far as AdWords goes... as it has been rolling out for about a week or two since the article came out. This means that we now get to appeal them and use the human response they get to teach the AI over time and therefore prevent mistaken demonetizations in the future. Ironically what revealing this information and giving us an avenue for appealing did was cause utter paranoia and misunderstanding from people who simply didn't read the article who believed that TH-cam was deliberately targeting groups of people and demonetizing their videos all at once... I hope that doesn't change their mind about giving creators more information and control in the future.
I basically just learned that my programming doesn't match the TH-cam algorithm because it's long-form, and viewers who seek out such content are a minority. Huzzah. Long-live the majority.
I love how you’ve got a real guy from TH-cam. It’s so nice to know the real truth. Thank you. New subscriber
You're right, I agree
should we be adding translations into our descriptions? or hashtags?
I believe that trending is not pay for play because due to FCC rules you have to disclose advertising placement.
youtube recommendation is not applied for my channel. how it works?
Another question I have is when you guys say "what they tend to watch" in the search results, does it do it by watch time, views, or both?
I found once after searching something a list with suggested similar words that others searched (or something like this) and I think is a great feature, I would love it to be permanent
It's hard to get new viewers these days :/
As a Tamil Music label Channel, this content really helps shape our plans for the upcoming time. Thank you guys!!
We are facing same issue... some of our performing videos those have done well for many months,
suddenly drop from 5k to 500 per hour…
i get 30 views
(per year)
Tom are you wearing a Rolex Submariner? Nice choice!
Great, the guy who talks about how to use TH-cam, the entire video is knocking on the microphone! Awesome. Minus ears
you have people who are over-advertising on my channel.
Thanks for your answer.
the most important thing of ALL is INTERACTION.. period :)
I watch many of the videos you provide for everyones enjoyment. Thankyou so very much and God bless
Hey Tom and Todd! Thanks for the insight on how things work "inside" YT. There's one question I struggle to find an answer to and it didn't really come up in those three ones of this mini series:
If a channel is "old" and hasn't been used for many years and then the creator decides to upload more frequently (really start the channel) - does "the algorithm" judge the channel by it's average performance over all those years or does the over all performance of a channel not influence how the algorithm treats the later uploads.
(If You need an example You could look at my channel since I was on YT almost "from the beginning" but only really started grinding a year ago.)
Keep rocking!
DID YOU GOT THE ANSWER?
Paid Trending? Yes there is, but its external to youtube. If you know a publicist and they have contacts in the online magazine sites or newspaper editors, they can embed your video several stories. Many know actors, they have them retweet your video for some favors. Yeah, publicist rule the TH-cam trends.
it should not be called trending. that is misleading. if u wonder why people are confused by trending, this is why, it is very misleading
trending is a myth :|
Do not say that in Russia the third largest flow in the world, as your employee said at one of the events. But in Russia there is no technical support for authors as such.
Very interesting stuff! Good to remember that "the algorithm" isn't one big monolithic thing that only does one thing in one way.
Great information 👍
Thank you for this video! It was really helpful, cant wait for part 2 :) have a great day
It is good to see people who work for TH-cam that are older than 18 years. I love stats and math...this was interesting to watch.
Do I understand correctly that now it's not the time of viewing but the speed of the set of views?
I spend just as much time watching suggested videos on my Home Page as I do with my subscriptions. The more I watch on the Home page, the better the suggested videos get. And I get to experience something slightly different and a lot of my new subscriptions come from that page. It has gotten to the point where I almost feel we are on the same page to my interests. I think that is pretty neat. Though a suggested video on Laziness popped up last week on my page and I took offence. Like TH-cam was talking to me.
Awesome 😎😎😍😎😍
Thanks, Tom. This is exactly the type of insider content that myself (and I'm sure many others) would like to see!
High
One thing i expect from a video that is being promoted on my dashboard is not having so much background noise. Otherwise it was my first video watched on your channel and i subscribed.
i don't mean to be rude but it sounds like youtube is become a mall, you have to walk past all the shops you don't want in order to reach your destination and by the time you get their you forgot what you came in for.
Where do we find anything new or any changes you have made. Do you let us know. Why do you never reply to a question other than pointing us to another section which still does not answer the question. Please do visual demonstrations of what you talk about in your help section
This was very informative, thanks for doing the interview.
What about the value in recommending content people don't know they like/want to watch, like when a consumer finds a product they had no idea they needed? Should you also not recommend videos with content type/format they may not have watched before? Would that not increase TH-cam activity and engagement as per TH-cam's overall goal?

This algorithm changes like the humor of my wife :)
I agree with you . thats all bs. I want to start a free something like this but with freedome and backing up the usa constitution. . anyone ready tk help me i got 10k Lt start
😊😊😊Nice one
Great info Guys love it !! Keep it up !!
I don't get it :D
watch time is more important then views
Feedback loop just mathematically prioritizes the same famous creators again. Other Creators that may have had low counts, but improve their content would still have almost no feedback loop value. This means that they will always be devalued by the feedback loop. Have you ever heard a song and hated it? Then after a while, you love it? Feedback loop would never give the small creator a chance to be loved by someone new.
*Please, do option block channel, becouse my daughter always see channel wit not good words!! And I want to block for hes eyes ans I cant!!!!*
Just enable age restriction in settings😊
The content under the "Trending" tab is not what I want to watch... and it lasts for several days if not weeks.
Great discussion.
Hi Tom I want to ask a question
Can we Private our live stream n still get the watch minutes
I would really like that when I amplaying my subscriptions on the subscription tab, that it just went from one to the next.. of the subscriptions.
+Fiberific! Thanks will pass this feedback along
very interesting look forward to part 2
Thanks for the interview :)
Texas Gal Treasures
Can they tell us what are the different types of segments that they monitor, so we know a general type to pick who we can target? For instance, he said there's "casual users." What are the other types? Thanks!
Waiting for part 2
+Anthony Smith yes I did a video last week on the enhanced meaning for the yellow icon and appeals it allows. Check it out :-)
I have and sadly (and understandably) it was far too vague to be helpful with the machine learning being too "dark" on details.
They're probably only even doing anything because of the ZombieGoBoom lawsuit...
my views are decreased from my past performance almost 60% what should i do please help
FANTASTIC INFORMATION!!!! thanks for the shower of gold nuggets!
If you're a TH-cam employee, you're definitely 'special'.
Very informative. I love that this channel exist! I gain a lot from this!
Всем привет из России! Hello from Russia!
Great info here guys! Very helpful. Thanks so much.
I’m new as a content creator, it’s nice to be able to learn about the algorithms
The right content, Paul Logan??? And people talking about Science and Literature going down the hill...
No way, José!
I've got 4k amazing and dedicated subscribers just by making videos I would personally like to watch
Do you answer audience comments, can you give your own assessment?
Thank so much for this explanation. I've been desperate to hear about this so called algorithm that controls everything
14:00 ***"We don't only look at what we call metadata that you provide about the video but we look at performance"***
Great video as always. Lots of interesting take aways.
hey dear kati
Quick tip to improve audio quality, try Audacity it's free, use noise reduction and you can remove virtually all the background noise, try it out.
