Such a great video...I'm 71 years old... and this went from a potential nightmare to a piece of cake repair thanks to you. I'm hoping that this was the cause of my leak. It appeared to be leaking from around the oil cooler for some time because there was a lot of dirt stuck on the oil cooler.Harbor Freight had a Presidents Day sale on torque wrenches and I picked one up for $9.99 plus the $3.79 for the gasket. Thanks
This is one of the best How To videos I've come across and thanks to dial2fast, I was able to successfully replace the oil cooler O-ring on my 2007 G35X (Nissan's VQ 6-cyl engine). The difficulty factor is a 1 out of 5 and is about a 10 minute job for those 20 and under (and about 2 hours for those 60 and older :). As dial2fast has indicated, draining the oil is not necessary unless you plan to change your oil anyway. Note, you will lose about 1/2 quart of oil if not draining the oil. For those with a G35, here are a few notes that may help: Tools/materials for the job: oil pan, flashlight, phone camera, rubber gloves, paper towels, trash can, 10mm socket w/ short extension, 22mm deep socket, large breaker bar (for nut removal), pick or small screw driver to remove old O-Ring, Oil Filter wrench, new O-Ring (avail on Amazon or Nissan dealer), Carb Cleaner spray, Super Lube Silicone Lubricating Compound. On any car, be sure to take the necessary precaution when jacking. If using a hydraulic jack, be sure to also use sold jack stands. 1. Remove the plastic shroud to gain clear access to oil filter housing. There are fourteen 10mm bolts (using a cordless impact driver will make quick work of this). 2. Remove the oil filter and using a breaker bar and the 22mm socket, loosen and remove the oil filter housing center nut/nipple. Note, the shoulders of the nut are shallow so be sure to hold the socket tight up against the nut to prevent stripping the nut shoulders. And, as stated many times over, there is no need to remove the cooler hoses. 3. Pull the oil filter housing away from the cooler and allow the oil to drain for about 5-10 minutes (about 1/2 quart will drain). 4. Remove the old O-ring (yes, it looks fine - looks are deceiving). Using the flash, take a picture of both sides of the housing. You will notice grime. This needs to be removed carefully without allowing the grime to enter the housing. Use a rag to cover the internal as well as possible and use a paper towel to remove most of the grime from both sides. Then spray Carb Cleaner or Brake Cleaner on both halves of the housing to achieve a clean surface, especially where the O-ring seats. Then take another picture to validate that no grime particles are remaining that could inhibit the O-ring seal (I find the camera does a better job than attempting to do a live visual since the camera can reach up into the cavity). 5. Using the Super Lube Silicone grease (or use clean motor oil if grease is unavailable), lubricate the O-ring and seat it as shown in the video. 6. Carefully re-align and mate the two halves and re-insert the center threaded nipple using the 22mm socket. Note again, this is torqued to 36 foot lbs (about 1/2 the torque normally used on most wheel lug nuts). 7. Wipe any excess oil on the undercarriage, reinstall the shroud, and top off the oil. Thanks to this great video, your oil leak should be solved.
I had difficulty getting the new O ring in the groove as I was doing it by feel , matched it with the old one and thought this isn't the same , Then I checked your video and you specifically mention the replacement is bigger . Well done that reassured me , I inserted a large screwdriver in the hole and twisted the housing so I could actually see what I was doing and VOIL.
I can't thank you enough for your video which gave me clear and concise directions and amazing visual footage in order to successfully fix my oil leak. What I cannot understand is why the Nissan dealer charges over 200 bucks for a job that requires a five dollar part and is almost as easy and expeditious as an an oil change.
I just wanted to follow up. I went from having the Exxon Valdez oil spill in my driveway to a mere drip or so. So I'd say 99% of my oil was leaking from this seal. Thank you so much for posting this. I thought there was something catastrophic going on with her car, so not only was this an easy fix, but cheap as well. I'm at around 176,000 miles, so if I can get another year or two out of her, I'll be good to go!
Out of all the videos on this subject, this is by far and away the best. Short, brief and to the point. Steady camera work. Didn’t have headaches with the usual seizure inducing shaky camera work.
2008 Nissan Altima 3.5 V6.The O-Ring part # 72493 did not fit my oil cooler (which calls for this vehicle). It was to big in diameter. After doing some research at the auto parts store and some comparing with the old one, Oil Cooler O-ring part # 917-036 (came with a set of 3) matched up identical to the old 1 and fits. For those looking and searching, I hope this helps.
Great video! I have a friend who is a mechanic let me know that there was another gasket in the housing for the oil filter on my 03 350z. He told me to look it up and lone behold i came across this video to give me a very detailed view along with torque specs. Thanks again for the video!
Thanks, Mate! I couldn't work out where the leak was, watching your video was a light-bulb moment. AUS $9.70 and 1/2 an hour of work later NO MORE LEAKS!!!! Not a drop. Really appreciate you doing this for all of us :-) THANK YOU!
Great video i went for a oil change at jiffy lube a month later i was leaking oil come to find out the cooler bolt was loose i wonder how that happened your videos are great you are helping people a great deal sir thanks...
You have been a real huge help. I have an 05 nissan quest and every time something goes wrong with it I make sure I check your videos and sure enough you've done it already. Next on the list is the oil cooler gasket. Thanks alot for the videos and keep em coming.
Thanks so much for taking the time to post your 3.5L oil cooler gasket video. With part numbers and torque specs wow! It took me two hours to do that job! Went exactly as you said it would. Thanks again!
Thanks my 2002 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE is leaking oil I changed the oil pan gasket thinking it was bad but still leaked so searched online and came to this video thanks a lot ! Will be changing my O Ring tomorrow !
Me and my girlfriend just saved up and bought a 2003 Nissan murano didn't even get home 20 miles away and it was leaking oil she was so sad though we got ripped off but looking at this and knowing mine is leaking at that same spot I'm ordering the part right now thank you so much
Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I just had the oil cooler start leaking and found your video. Great video and very informative, especially the proper torque setting.
my 2006 Nissan Quest has been leaking for a long time I stumbled upon this video and I think this is the answer to my problems very informative very good video thank you going to do it tomorrow thank you
I believe my G35 suffers from this leak. It makes an annoying mess on my garage floor. I'll be changing that seal the next time I do an oil change. Thanks for posting this video.
Very helpful video. Thanks! I will do this for my 2012 Nissan Versa, experiencing a steady oil leak that appears to be coming from behind the oil cooler.
Great video, looks like the easiest job yet on the 05 Maxima. I already replaced the air cond. compressor and cleaner, the front struts ant the troublesome half axle. Man ! this car has issues.., thanks again.
Thank you for the clear cut video. My oil cooler seal started leaking as well and not too long after the last oil change. I noticed that my metal coolant return line is rusting (not leaking yet). I think I'm going to replace the oil cooler seal as well as the metal coolant pipe and all the hoses as a preventative measure for the future.
thank you! this is applicable to most NISSAN vehicles with the 3.5L including the 2009-2014 MURANO. dealer had new black seal for $5. The old red seal seemed to be the culprit.
Thanks for video. I tried to install part number 21304-JA11A on my mom's 2002 Altima 3.5SE, but the ring was slightly too big. I found a post on a forum that mentioned using the gasket from the oil filter in its place, and that seems to have worked.
I had the same issue on my 2007 Quest and it took a bit of force to get it seated. It was the right size, but didn't just slide right in as expected. No more oil leak :)
I tried to install a FelPro Oil Cooler Gasket on my 2011 Quest 3.5 L and it was too big. I used a purolator one PL14612 gasket and it fit perfectly on the oil cooler. So far no leaks thank you for your post DIY
Thank you for putting this video on here. My 2005 Quest just started leaking really bad and I was trying to figure out what was going on. But now I know. Great video and very informative.
One of the best videos I have seen on youtube yet. I have the 06 nissan murano and I have to exact same problem on my vehicle. Thank you for making the video and ill be posting this on Facebook and passing it on so others don't have to waste their time looking at not so good videos. Once again thanks for posting and great job!!
Great video, I have a 2013 M35h hybrid and noticed 10-15 oil drops under pan splashed behind from driving after oil change. DIY car maintenance guy here and now I have a good idea what to look for as possible leak reasons. Thanks!
Thanks for the pictures of where the new gasket was supposed to go as it wasn't obvious since mine was also stuck to the back surface. I wish I had de-greased and hosed the whole area down before I replaced the gasket as the leaking oil had attracted much road grit which was hard to keep away from the inner oil cooler surfaces.. I had the best luck getting the new gasket in by placing the new gasket at the bottom of the cooler groove and working a finger from each hand along the sides until meeting at the top and popping in the remaining gasket portion. Another observation - the retaining bolt didn't feel to be especially tight when I removed it, and the old gasket didn't seem damaged/deteriorated in any way. I wonder, if I had just re-torqued the bolt to 36 ft-lbs without replacing the gasket, might the oil leak have also gone away?
You rock. First your video helped me change my wheel bearing assembly on my 2008 Nissan Quest. Now you are going to help me replace my oil cooler O ring. Thank You! I wish TH-cam had a donate button so I could thank you with money!
Chris, you are very welcome. If it comes time to change your spark plugs, I just uploaded a series of 5 videos on that job. Hope I will keep my 04 Quest alive for few more years.
dial2fast Just watched those 5 videos. I'm at 99k miles, so it's time for new spark plugs, but that would be the biggest job I've ever done. Should I wait for a valve cover gasket leak first? Change it out as a preventative measure since I'll already be there?
dial2fast Also, I'm going to put together a video about replacing the passenger side CV axle on my 2008 Quest. It didn't have the typical bad CV axle symptoms (clicking when turning). Instead, this bad CV axle would cause vibration anytime the accelerator was engaged (accelerating, or going uphill). When you took your foot off the accelerator, vibrations stopped. Vibrations got worse as a month or two passed. Vibrations were most noticeable from 40-70mph. I believe the inside joint/boot was bad on the culprit.
the oil cooler on my Nissan 2004 Xtrail has the same problem, and although the engine is a T30 2.2 Dci everything in your video looks very similar. So I'm hopping it will just the same.
Just did the oil cooler gasket/seal change and followed all your steps! it worked smoothly. I lined up my tools first, and started executing. so far no oil leak underneath the car. I will keep monitoring but I feel confident it's fixed. I was wondering if you've ever drained/replaced (not flushed) hydrolic transmission fluid?
Awesome video, thank you for sharing this. I'll probably be changing out this o-ring this weekend since my wife's car has been leaking for some time and I was thinking it was something far worse. Could still be but for a ten dollar o-ring, this is worth trying for sure. One clarification: You didn't have to drain the oil before this procedure? You just lost a little when removing the filter and cooler? Thanks again.
An excellent video! Thank you. Not sure if this will do for my 2001 pathfinder, I'll just check the part number to find out. My oil leak just started, also after an oil change. I switched to pure synthetic and not sure it this contributed to the problem, but I will replace the o ring and find out.
I knew on my 5 gen BBC 454 had h This issue, glad I looked up a video to confirm it's similar with my neighbors murano, going to give him the good news. Thanks to your video.
Good video but I have a question. Did you check the relief valve that is behind the cooler nestled in the engine block? There's a spring loaded steel ball in that that can sometimes go bad that can cause too much pressure and you'll be back at it in a few months. You can press that to check if it's still good. Too easy to press is no good. If you took that out at some point do you have any tips to remove it?
On my 2004 Infiniti I35 that has about 70K miles, I was losing about a quart of oil every several weeks of freeway driving. No smoke. No oil on the driveway. I did not remove the oil cooler. Just torqued it down to 36 foot pounds and put the same filter back on and that solved the leak. Apparently not always necessary to change the cooler gasket.
Thanks! I think this is the source of an oil leak on my 2006 nissan murano. Have you heard of muranos having this same issue? Going to try to replace this soon and ill let you know if it solves the issue.
Great video! my dealer wants $322 to do this. I'm still debating if I want to try it but I just replaced my serpentine belt so I'm feeling a little cocky!
Mike O'Neill $322?! That's insane. I am having the same issue with my Xterra and and replacing mine. Literally a 30 minute job. I drained my oil since it was time for an oil change. Take the filter off, unscrew the bolt, take the old o-ring out. Clean off surfaces (I used a paper towel) and then replace it all. The o-ring was $5.00 at the Nissan dealership. Autozone and advanced didn't carry it. I paid less than $35 total, including the oil change! If you can do an oil change and replace a serpentine, you've got this! Just make sure you torque it correctly! Good luck :-)
Did you drain engine oil out by removing the engine oil drain plug? Or you just removed oil cooler and oil filter and put them back? and added 1/4 quart of oil? Thanks
thanks a million dial2fast you just saved me big bucks!!! I like all your videos by the way you explain everything in detail and that really helps a lot.. Thanks again for helping me out and keep up the good work!
I did this a couple weeks ago on my 2004 Altima 3.5 SE using another TH-cam video. Your video is clearer and well-produced. How did you you get the service manual?
I've read other articles on this and they suggest draining the engine coolant and oil first. I saw your comment about not needing to drain the oil since the filter is above the pan but what about the coolant? Thanks. Great video. I'm ready to do on my 04 Maxima.
If you remove the coolant line, then you have just created more work for yourself as once air enters the coolant line, now you will have to bleed it. The Nissan can be a pain to bleed all the air out of the coolant system. There is just no need to mess with the coolant line (as shown in the video).
Great video. I've a 2006 altima 3.5 had an oil cooler gasket leak around 165k. I took it to shop and they're saying we need to replace all 3 gaskets oil cooler, valve and oil pan. Should I just change oil cooler or do all gaskets together ?
great video , just bought a murano 2004 with i think same engine and have the puddle of oil also , will check today to see if its oil cooler, if this works you saved me $$ thanks again
oh man I hope this is my problem. my girlfriend just got an 06 maxima a few months back. and its leaking. my first thought was main seal. gonna take a look at it this weekend. fingers crossed..
Hello. I have a 2008 3.5 Altima. It is NOT leaking oil externally, but Is leaking oil into coolant system. Oddly, there is no coolant in the engine oil. Wondering if this oil cooler can cause my symtoms, or if its the head gasket, or? I thought there would be coolant in the oil if the head/gasket was damaged?
Such a great video...I'm 71 years old... and this went from a potential nightmare to a piece of cake repair thanks to you. I'm hoping that this was the cause of my leak. It appeared to be leaking from around the oil cooler for some time because there was a lot of dirt stuck on the oil cooler.Harbor Freight had a Presidents Day sale on torque wrenches and I picked one up for $9.99 plus the $3.79 for the gasket. Cayman West did u use the same part number? Because it telling me that its will not fit my x
Brother, you GET it. Great angles and thorough commentary.
I appreciate the provision of the part number as well as the torque specification. Overall the presentation was clear, concise and informative.
Thanks for your comment!
I had difficulty getting the new O ring in the groove as I was doing it by feel , matched it with the old one and thought this isn't the same ,
Then I checked your video and you specifically mention the replacement is bigger . Well done that reassured me , I inserted a large screwdriver in the hole and twisted the housing so I could actually see what I was doing and VOIL.

Short, clear and factual. Doesn't get better than this. Thank you!
Great video! I have a friend who is a mechanic let me know that there was another gasket in the housing for the oil filter on my 03 350z. He told me to look it up and lone behold i came across this video to give me a very detailed view along with torque specs. Thanks again for the video!
Glad my video was helpful!
What a great job you did both with the camera and with all of your knowledgeable verbal instructions. Thank you for such a professional video.
+Randy Price Really appreciate your comment! Thanks
Great video i went for a oil change at jiffy lube a month later i was leaking oil come to find out the cooler bolt was loose i wonder how that happened your videos are great you are helping people a great deal sir thanks...

Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I just had the oil cooler start leaking and found your video. Great video and very informative, especially the proper torque setting.
your clip was really good , clear and well video'd ... well done ... thanx for helping another 20,000,000 nissan owners .
so many people on youtube never include the part number. Good job.

thank you! this is applicable to most NISSAN vehicles with the 3.5L including the 2009-2014 MURANO. dealer had new black seal for $5. The old red seal seemed to be the culprit.
Great video I like the fact you even showed the torque spec on fsm diagram and not just tell us. This is a commen problem on most fwd vq35de's.
Thanks for your comment!
I'm glad I watched your video I'm having the same problem with my nissan maxima 07. I'll replace the gasket myself! Thanks for your awesome video!
Thanks for video. I tried to install part number 21304-JA11A on my mom's 2002 Altima 3.5SE, but the ring was slightly too big. I found a post on a forum that mentioned using the gasket from the oil filter in its place, and that seems to have worked.

Thanks for the help. I did this today and your video made it easy. I appreciate how clear the instructions are.
Awesome video,we where driving ourshelfs crazy trying to figure out where this leak was coming from, thanks very much.
Glad to have been able to help!
Thank you 🙏 when the Dealer Changed oil started to leak and marked the filter to find out it wasn’t changed again thank saved me money
Very informative! It only took me about an hour to do this and I saved a ton of $$$. Thanks for posting...

Thank you so much for this video, this might be why I have leakage in my 2005 Nissan, not sure yet but I can defiantly use your video!

dial2fast Also, I'm going to put together a video about replacing the passenger side CV axle on my 2008 Quest.
Thanks for this vid. my 07 xterra is doing this. Just past 99,000 miles.
Great video, I like that you included the torque value for oil cooler bolt.

Awesome video. About to fix my moms Altima with this as a walkthrough. Thank you!
Thank you so much ! Dealership wanted $1200.00 for this. I was able to do it myself in about one hour !
Get OUT OF HERE! That's crazy!
Really good very informative. Question is this for all the Nissan including Altima 2011????
Love this going to buy 2 of the Nissan Quest this week one for and one for my wife 2007 and oil leak was my concern
An excellent video! Thank you. Not sure if this will do for my 2001 pathfinder, I'll just check the part number to find out. My oil leak just started, also after an oil change. I switched to pure synthetic and not sure it this contributed to the problem, but I will replace the o ring and find out.
Dannie Hill switching over to full synthetic is part of the problem. Full synthetic have a tendency to find a way out.
Great video. Very clear and specific. I like that you even show you you checked to make sure that's what the problem is. THANKS!
Thanks for your comment!
Excellent video, thanks for posting! Seems like this is what's causing the oil leak on my 08 Altima 3.5. Looks like an easy fix.
I knew on my 5 gen BBC 454 had h
This issue, glad I looked up a video to confirm it's similar with my neighbors murano, going to give him the good news. Thanks to your video.
Too easy! I bought my gasket/o-ring in the trunk for months now but I think it is time to get it done.
Great video I have the exact leak and this detailed information is a big help...looks like I'll be fixing it this weekend
If you took that out at some point do you have any tips to remove it?
the gasket may not always be going bad... in our case the cooler screw had loosened over time.
That was my issue. My screws were loose
Eh replace out the gasket while youre in there, its a sub $10 part
@@sterrshow5016 mine was thick ass hell! But yes, I would suggest that.
Over time & oil changes, the bolt gets loose , always a good practice when changing the oil to tighten / check the bolt
Great video! I just found out my 2005 Quest is having the same issue. They said $160 to fix.
great job just want to tell others never use a torque wrench to break a bolt always use the torque wrench to tighten
Perfectly filmed and explained video, kudos!
Any chance you could add the part number to the description please? And where you purchased?
Great video as usual. Thank you.

My guy you just saved me a ton of time. Thank you very much
This is an excellent video. I have this problem on my 2005 Maxima and I can fix it now.
Really helpful and the video quality is excellent. It's my next project, you made it look easy. Thanks!
Great video!! no stupid background music clear and precise, thank you!!
Thanks! I think this is the source of an oil leak on my 2006 nissan murano. Have you heard of muranos having this same issue? Going to try to replace this soon and ill let you know if it solves the issue.
I am not sure about the Murano, but both engines are almost identical.
was the oil cooler the cause of your leak?
You are a savior on a Sunday!!! Great advice, explanation and video. I will subscribe later but I have to go install my O ring gasket....Lol
Thanks for your comment!
Did you drain engine oil out by removing the engine oil drain plug? Or you just removed oil cooler and oil filter and put them back? and added 1/4 quart of oil? Thanks
thanks so much man, I had that problem for 4 year and I say where is the leaking. thanks
Did you fix the leak?
Great vid!
thanks a million dial2fast you just saved me big bucks!!! I like all your videos by the way you explain everything in detail and that really helps a lot.. Thanks again for helping me out and keep up the good work!
Excellent video. I have replaced a few of these myself. It is quite common.
I did this a couple weeks ago on my 2004 Altima 3.5 SE using another TH-cam video. Your video is clearer and well-produced. How did you you get the service manual?
Google 'nissan fsm' and it should be the first link for nicoclub
I've read other articles on this and they suggest draining the engine coolant and oil first. I saw your comment about not needing to drain the oil since the filter is above the pan but what about the coolant? Thanks. Great video. I'm ready to do on my 04 Maxima.
If you remove the coolant line, then you have just created more work for yourself as once air enters the coolant line, now you will have to bleed it. The Nissan can be a pain to bleed all the air out of the coolant system. There is just no need to mess with the coolant line (as shown in the video).
dial2fast Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated!
Excellent video. Short and to the point. Thanks
Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for this! I was able to change mine out because of this video!
Awesome video, very well shot and explained! Great job, thank you
Nice. Thorough and comprehensive. Thanks
Great video. I've a 2006 altima 3.5 had an oil cooler gasket leak around 165k. I took it to shop and they're saying we need to replace all 3 gaskets oil cooler, valve and oil pan. Should I just change oil cooler or do all gaskets together ?
You need to fix what's leaking. Check those items out to diagnose the issue first.
Thanks for your upload this helped me out lots on my 07 Murano.
Very helpful, Thanks once again.
Great instruction! Both Video and audio are very clear. thank you
Thanks for your comment!
Great video. Thanks. I'll do my 2006 Niaan Quest next Saturday.
great video , just bought a murano 2004 with i think same engine and have the puddle of oil also , will check today to see if its oil cooler, if this works you saved me $$
thanks again
This is how repair videos should be done.
oh man I hope this is my problem. my girlfriend just got an 06 maxima a few months back. and its leaking. my first thought was main seal. gonna take a look at it this weekend. fingers crossed..
Awesome clarity on the explanation and video. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment!
So simple! I'll take care of this today. Thanks!
Would this be the cause of black sludge in the coolant reservoir or would that require a replacement cooler? Thanks
bro, great video! do you have more with the nissan quest?
Dealer wants $195.00 for this repair on my 07 Maxima. Thanks for this video.
+philipfm That is a great price, Lol
I have a 2006 Nissan Maurano! I think I have the same problem. Thanks for the video!!!!
