I went to see him as "Clockwork" back in early 2014 at EDC Mexico, maybe that was the set mentioned, he played a couple of his trap IDs and I remember being blown away by them, Tell me and Core where highlights at the time, so glad I got to see him at least as Clockwork :) it was mostly a trap/dubstep set with a sprinkle of big room after the first half hour lmao
Same!! Omg I remember seeing him at hard summer 2013 as both & was mind blown by the fact that it's both henry LOL then at nocturnal years ago he was so crazy good as clockwork
Saw him two days ago in Perth and unironically he made such an impact on me it's comparable to few artists I've ever come across. Skrillex, Meshuggah, Excision, Fox Stevenson, Noisia, probably the only ones that have come close.
this is crazy man. i remember being at edc in 2013. i think he played on the smaller 7up stage or something like that. this video is awesome, i love rl grime.
possibly my biggest all-time festival L was Camp Bisco in 2013 when Henry played as bother RL and Clockwork and I knew Clockwork and he played a dope set and all my friends kept talking about almost unknown RL Grime was the highlight of the whole fest and I didn't knooooow
Love your channel bro! Been binging the whole page. While we’re on the topic of trap, can you do a video about the come up and come down of trap? It’s been on my mind a lot in recent years how trap was the biggest sound in underground edm at one point then it just seemed to completely fade with the emergence of all the dubstep. You hardly ever see a pure trap artist on lineups other than RL Grime, dude is holding it down 😩
Your channel is awesome, I've been thoroughly enjoying learning about all my fave artists! Can you do one on Flume sometime? I'm so curious as to how that man has gotten so big
I intentionally didn't mention any album songs by name other than Julia for its unique sample A lot of people have called me out on not mentioning core which I totally understand, but the point of my videos is to better understand who the artist is and what their journey has been like, and I assumed that everyone who watches this video is already going to know about the big songs like Core, so only mentioning the album is sufficient. Whereas a song like Julia has an obscure sample that is probably much less commonly known, which is why I wanted to mention that track specifically by name.
@@audioeats yeah i totally agree, just shows that this wasnt some shallow video about obvious surface level shit, i actually learned a lot of new stuff due to your actual real research
I remember the dark days around 2018 2019 when trap was just getting soo uninspired and derivative and the big trap names of that era were kind of fading away, it just felt like it was dying, it made me sad. I love trap. And for it to keep going and be better than ever, I'm so happy :)
Yeah someone else also mentioned that, I read part of that article but totally missed the part about his relation to the company 😆 I'm gonna leave a comment with the correction
I figured I wouldn't mention specific tracks on the album aside from Julia because of that sample, but I guess I could have emphasized how big Core and Valhalla were
Fun little fact check, he doesn’t coincidentally share a name with the co founder of Steinway Pianos, his great great grandfather Heinrich Steinway is the founder of Steinway Pianos…
Where did you find that? I did a lot of digging and couldn't find any link between the two (not saying that means I'm right though). But also, Henry E Steinway/ Heinrich E Steinweg was born in 1797, and RL Grime's great grandfather was likely born somewhere in the early 1900's Edit: whoops I didn't see you put 2 greats, so that would push it back into the late-ish 1800's
@@audioeats dang! You must’ve missed the latest and in my personal opinion GREATEST RL piece DJ Mag RL Grime Cover piece in January. They had a DJ Mag show in LA a month or so after too. The author Megan does an incredible job, truly one of the best pieces out here.
I just did the math and if Henry E Steinway / Heinrich E Steinweg had a kid at 30 years old, and each subsequent child had the next child in the lineage at 30 years old, that would make RL Grime the great great great great great grandson at minimum, but it's likely even more removed from that as people were having kids far younger than 30 in those time periods. So it makes it pretty difficult to trace the lineage that far back, and as far as I'm aware the link between RL Grime and the Steinway & Sons founder hasn't been confirmed or even publicly acknowledged by RL Grime. The only piece of info I can find making the claim is an Australian music publication from 2015 saying that RL Grime is the great great grandson of the founder, but obviously the math doesn't add up there and nothing else was provided to back it up. I guess my conclusion is that there isn't enough public information to confirm whether they are or aren't related, so saying they for sure aren't related in the video was a reach.
Oh whoops I just found it, you're right! I'm still not sure what's up with the claim of him only being the great great grandson though, the math definitely doesn't add up there, but I guess they're referring to the final family owner of the company rather than the founder. Anyways, I'll pin a comment with the correction, thank you for pointing that out!
Yes! I've been wanting to do a video on him for a while. I'm working on Illenium right now and am doing Ganja White Night after that, but I'm down to do Getter/Terror Reid soon, I think that would make a crazy video
CORRECTION! So apparently RL Grime actually IS related to the founder of Steinway & Sons, thank you to those who pointed that out for me
EDM Trap God
Easily the GOAT.
Yes so as Baauer and carnage. Those were golden days ❤
Dude you’re videos are the best, so thorough and well said. Keep ‘em comin

What's the very first track in this video, right as you begin with your intro? Sounds siiiick
It's a demo loop from splice
Never knew that about Autoerotique getting him to meet Aoki. Love how artists build other artists who build other artists to keep the scene going.
he is my favorite artist to see live
Do Zomboy or NGHTMRE next
He is a producers producer. Brought so many names up with him. Great vid!
Damn wild.I loved clockwork back in the day. Didn't know he was the same person as RL Grime.
I have a few Clockwork IDs on my old laptop, which is now lost
In the words of Isoxo "That man is a legend right there holy sh*t" love you rl goat
Impressive that u made this whole video without even mentioning the biggest trap anthem of all time: Core.

can you do one on heroes x villains? very elusive trap legend
Ultra set was fkn insane
I'm still torn about ending his Halloween mix
Yeah same, it would be cool if one of the other Sable Valley artists started doing them
What’s everyone’s favorite RL Grime song? Mines definitely Pressure
Core
RL Grime, Baauer, Flosstradamus with Josh and Kurt. Trap really peaked 2013 😢
Do Seven Lions!
Great vid. Can we have a Troyboi, Mr Carmack video as well.
Definitely
I won 10k betting on rl grime to win the FN pro am
Great video as always. No mention of Core tho? I feel like thats his top track
I figured I wouldn't mention specific tracks on the album aside from Julia because of that sample, but I guess I could have emphasized how big Core and Valhalla were
Documentary fit for a King 👑

Did I miss you talk about Core?
It's on the VOID album so I didn't want to rattle off all the tracks, but I guess I could have emphasized how big Core & Valhalla were

ISOxo performed out here in Salt Lake City, it was at the BoxPac Warehouse, the event was thrown by Mutiny Music Collective.
The trap scene is in good hands with RL Grime at the helm. Quality over quantity kind of guy and I appreciate that about him.
TRAP IS BACK BABY. 2024 and 2025 we’re going to be seeing a bigger trap resurgence, mark my words 😏
one does not simply have footage of someone playing league with a controller
do getter next!! or terror reid
Yes! I've been wanting to do a video on him for a while. I'm working on Illenium right now and am doing Ganja White Night after that, but I'm down to do Getter/Terror Reid soon, I think that would make a crazy video
Do Sara Landry
Make one of illenium
He's next!
This is father grimes world and we’re just livin in it. Let’s fucking go bb. Great shit my guy
Please do ISOxo & Knock2 next!
He was influenced by 90’s rap such as 50 cents get rich or die trying 😂😂😅 50 cent came out in the 2003 not the 90’s lol
Good catch, that's my bad 😅 He did like 90's rap as well though
tipper
rl is the goat when he wants to be(last sf show)
slightly strange he branched to techno, cause let's be honest those two genres do not mix well
I think you mean edm/dance trap, not actual trap music lol
Yeah definitely lol, I only cover electronic music on the channel
I wouldn't call him the "godfather of trap" lol ...
