Incredibly, Barbirolli made this recording on demand out of the blue, having had no sleep and no prior knowledge of the work.
Returning to England by the boat train, on which he had suffered a sleepless night, at Liverpool Street train station he was accosted by HMV's chief producer Fred Gaisberg, who informed him that a session had been booked to record Vieuxtemps' violin concerto #4 with Heifetz, starting in just three hours time at 2pm.
Barbirolli's protests that he had never heard the work or seen the score were brushed aside, and he was taken to Heifetz's hotel, where Heifetz and his piano accompanist played it through.
Heifetz had a beaten up full score and Barbirolli said he would give it a go. So they went straight to the studio.
The session started at 2pm prompt. Within three hours all was done, and the recording we have here had been made!

The most underrated composer of all time. Better than the "big names".

Still no one surpass J.Heifetz yet. What a noble emotion he had and mastery of the violin. He used pure gut strings for A and D. This makes all the more difficult to make a pure sound, almost impossible for modern students.

Scherzo was one and only take during recording session.

@olli-pekkakarppinen2747 I read that from when Heifetz walked into the studio, the whole concerto was recorded in an hour and a half. The orchestra or conductor didn't even know the score. When will we ever see the likes of Heifetz again. The second movement is also unbelievable. Heifetz stands, and will always stand on his own unique pedestal.
      😊.

I think Hilary Hahn gave a perfect performance, live or on recording. I love Heifetz playing here of course.

The violin soloist's first name begins with a "J", or are you making a joke?
