This song has been done many times, by outstanding musicians. This trio (no offense to Rowan) was gifted. Their performances probably will never be bested.
Been a huge Tony fan since I was a kid back in the 90's! And even though he's not playing "Clarence Antique" that guitar has the stuff and Bryn is phenomenal-major bass talent-I'm married but yeah man I have a respectful crush on her for her ability to feel the vibe-she amazes me every time I watch her play! God Bless
Feature this: 8 inches of rain in 4 hours flooded both outdoor venues with 4 feet of water. On short notice they moved the whole shmeer inside. All was high and dry including this Pete video and videographer...and the Reeltime Travelers, too. They did good.
What makes these musicians, and the song, so great is that they listen intently to everything that's going on around them, not just their own playing. The backup they're contributing interwines itself in and around the lead musician's licks This is especially true of Bryn's bass playing. Excellent bluegrass!
Just moved to Santa Fe NM. Going to Santa Fe University of Art and Design as a contemporary music major. I've been listening to these guys for years, my parents raised me on this. Low and behold, Sharon Gilchrist happens to be my mandolin teacher. She is by far one of the nicest most humble players I've met. Not to mention she rips it up.
There is an unspoken respect between these musicians, they allow each other to extend and compliment this tune. This is the epitome of what a band should aspire for. Tony is in charge but these ladies display their worth in no uncertain terms.
I really like the way Tony plays a melody, particularly here. His improv solo is great, too, but it's his opening break that grabs my ear and rythmic intuition. Tony has a unique way of stripping away all superfluous or distracting elements from the music as well as the guitar itself, bringing out the essense of both and making it available to the listener.
The upright bass player is an accomplished musician named Bryn Bright, who has performed and recorded with many other famous musicians. She received her bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Tennessee in 2019, and works in engineering, when not performing. The mandolin player is Sharon Gilchrist, brother of Troy Gilchrist, a bluegrass musician. She studied mandolin at Belmont University where she received a BA in Mandolin Performance. She writes music and has performed with may other top-name musicians. This is really a star-studded group here!
This video(and many others) were filmed by Less Than Face Productions. Check out the Midnight Moonlight from this set. LTF also has released compilations from several east coast festivals.
I was at this show, front row in the banquet hall. The festival got flooded and wiped out any chance of music at the main stages. All the music happened at the two ends of this hall. One act would end and everybody had to turn their seats around to watch the next act. Front row for one band, last row for the next.
@CarlosMacMartin "Shady Grove" is derived from an old English folk ballad called "Mattie Groves", which has the same melody but very different lyrics. Fairport Convention used to do an electric version of it.
Many years ago, Peter played our little club in Ocean City MD. The bass player sat with us all afternoon drinking wine (Schloss Volrads was his fav). Wish I could remember his name.
The Tony Rice Unit will be playing Island in the Mountains Fest on Blannahassett Island in Marshall, NC on 08-01-2011 Google Island in the Mountains Fest and come join us on the island.
Brynn Bright Lauderdale is a very capable bass player, as well as a wonderful harmony singer. Pay particular attention to the drum beat she makes on the upper bout of the bass. Just enough to make it interesting... betta you can't do that. She makes love to the bass. Tony is pretty good too.
thanks much for posting these - I was there and these are great! So much rain that they moved the show inside and then closed the doors when it got full. My friends and fam sat outside waiting a turn to get in as people left, but not many found the exit - I surely didn't! Got any more from that afternoon?
RIP TONY RICE. One of the greats.
Tony Rice was beyond belief, just can't beat that sound.
This song has been done many times, by outstanding musicians. This trio (no offense to Rowan) was gifted. Their performances probably will never be bested.
Amazing music thanks to sharing 👏👏👏🙏🇮🇪🌹
Sharon Gilchrist on mandolin....she rocks! This is a good collaboration. I hope to hear more.
Sharon is so great
How on Earth have four people NOT liked that!!!!?????
Some folks have terrible taste in music.
Well, ya see...... the "dislikes" are members of the "Obligatory Order of the Oblivious Oblongatae"......
I motion to revise that to "no" taste in music :)
you've heard about trolls, right?
Des jaloux , incompétents en tout
Well exceptional play guy from Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪👏👏👏👏

Tony Rice is a marvel, but the whole band is great. I especially love Sharon Gilchrist's mandolin playing. Terrific stuff.
Imagine this band, but with effects on the guitar like heavy distortion. That would be delicious to listen to...
@@-jank-willsonBilly Strings lol?
Love the unusual chord changes to this amazing old tune!
amstu3 there’s a YT video of a Master Class that he gives with Happy Traum about these chord changes. Interesting stuff

Tony's smoking on guitar and so are the ladies!

Killer bass player. Stands out even with Tony up there tearing it up.
Jeez. I agree. I bet I could play like Tony Rice if I had a foundation like that! She’s many levels above the typical “good” bluegrass bass player.
Indeed! She might actually be too good, if that makes any sense?
@@ThaiThomBryn Davies, the Bass-dancer.
No offence, but she's also better looking than Peter and Tony...
....love this group of musicians!!!
I was more impressed by the mandolin player than by Tony Rice on this performance. Thanks Terry for posting her name.
Sharon is fantastic but you're nuts. Sorry for your medical disorder.
The bass player is on fire-in every way possible-wow !

So enigmatic and elegant!
I wish I were that double bass!

I'm always so glad when Rowan stops talking.
Love it.
Sharon Gilchrist is rocking that!
Great musicians they all are....wish they had turned up the mic for Tony's guitar just a bit. Thanks for the great music.
Le maître absolu
Amazing
My buddy Stephen is going to lose his mind when I show him this!
Wow! That is some awesome finger picking!
I don't hear any finger picking. I can't really hear the backup guitarist, but Tony Rice is flatpicking. "Fingerpicking" refers to the right hand.
edejan it is flatpicking
may fav six string razor
Sharon Gilchrist, mandolin
Bryn Davies, string bass
Many years ago, Peter played our little club in Ocean City MD. The bass player sat with us all afternoon drinking wine (Schloss Volrads was his fav). Wish I could remember his name.
Brilliant,love it,lol
when two beautiful girls are playing so well that you realize how gorgeous they are only when the music is over
They would be women actually.
bluegrass girls!!! i love them
Best wishes to all from Less Than Face Productions.
LOL One month later and nothing there yet! Looks like his take on "soon" resembles his take on "do better"!

Bryn Davies on Bass -- oh yeah.
That bass player is smoking hot!
Hottest bass player ever!!

@bokoredux Look for the version of Cold Rain and Snow from this show, they (or one of them) is singing. Very nice...
Amazing lead with such am amazing back up. Sorry to loosen such an amazing guitar. Player. JIM 3:50
You're right, his Clarence White 35 D-28 is different at the head and the neck protrudes into the sound hole about a half inch.
Okay, so now we know that there's TWO stand up bass playing babes in this world. Esperanza Spalding and this Bryn Davies.
thanks much for posting these - I was there and these are great! So much rain that they moved the show inside and then closed the doors when it got full. My friends and fam sat outside waiting a turn to get in as people left, but not many found the exit - I surely didn't! Got any more from that afternoon?
I believe that is Sharon GIlchrist...she sure can pick. And Tony isn't too shabby!
Bryn is so good on bass.
@eriswept Yup. That's a great re-thinking of this tune.
I do believe that is a 1935, D-28 Martin guitar. Use to belong to Clearance white of the Byrds.
That's Tony's Santa Cruz deluxe signature model ;-) . based on "The Antique"
Tony playing the Martin beats all...although I'll take him with the Santa Cruz.
