I've been playing guitar for 30 years and just discovered this guy. Better late then never, I'd like to think. I can't believe how clear and accurate his fretting is on an accustic guitar. So fast and so clear. That guitar must have great action that's set up custom just for him , of course . Even so, that is very difficult with an acustic. But this guy is flawless. He constantly mixes chords and scales typical in jazz ,,but even the best jazz players hit a dead note once in a while. This guy is perfect. So glade I found this. Thanks for posting it. Very impressive

Tony has had a beautiful 2003 black on black Mustang Cobra vert for years. and while I grew up listening to his music and cherish it. Ill never forget the sound his cobra made as the supercharger would whine as he drove past our house just a few doors down from his house...my dad and I would just look at each other back then smile and say..."there goes Tony again." He will truly be missed...condolences to his wife Pam and the rest of the Rice family!

You are right. I had the pleasure of listening and watching both masters, Tony and Norman Blake together at a small venue in St Petersberg, Fl in the mid- '90s. Rice's right-hand movement was primarily at the wrist while Blakes was somewhat more fluid from the elbow. Watch the New River Train video of them playing together to see the two styles.

This was my first time ever hearing or seeing this man play...WHY?? There's something very wrong with the world when talent like this isn't a household name. At least not a household name to me. You can't hide imperfections playing acoustically, there's no Distortion or gain, just your fingers and the strings. This man sounds like he was born with an acoustic in his hands.
Blown away. What a beautiful song.

Not gonna lie, i teared up while i was watching this video. I have been playing guitar for 13 years and i identify with bluegrass and country more than i do with any other genre. Tony Rice’s 1996 album “Tony Rice Sings Gordon Lightfoot” is the first bluegrass album i ever listened to and it changed my life and also helped to shape the musician that i am today. I recently bought Tony’s 2000 album “Unit of Measure” and it is beautiful.

Beautiful. Watch that chord movement. There’s a Doctorate in making a guitar weep, cry and inspire!!! Thanks for this

He is the master of acoustic guitar , bluegrass and bluejazz lol ( listen to backwaters album) and will always be … you know what makes him so good and unique? The way he find space to do silences at the right time between all this fast notes … everything about his playing is just so good with his own particular sound .
There’s other good players but i don’t care about some who are just fast , the perfect example of art and to be a master of his craft tony was the perfect example… not to forget about his awesome voice too and his respect for his musicians .

That 1935 Martin D-28 with the enlarged soundhole is the definition of a cannon, Tonys talent and that guitar are the perfect marriage.

It was Clarence White's guitar before Tony had it. It has a very storied history. Only someone like Tony deserved to play it.

Tony's wife recently allowed Billy Strings to play it on stage. Did a helluva Freeborn Man with it among others.

Tony was, and forever will be, my god of flat-picking…
There are absolutely no wasted movements…not one. As for whatever list you might have of talented guitarists, Tony is at the tippy-top, and there is not a close second…we are talking miles away.
RIP to the best there ever was, and the best there ever will be.

Sheer brilliance. Technically perfect and a massive sense of melody. He has few equals in the history of guitar playing.
