it seems to me that driving in a straight line, making a turn, then driving again in a straight line is a common american "handling benchmark", and in that sense yes, there's nothing special about the 3 series. it's refined and you don't feel any excitement, the same as acura which is significantly cheaper to buy and run in the usa.
but if you took those cars on, say, a narrow mountain road, there the differences would suddenly widen. shorter overhangs, better balance, better weight transfer in connected corners, more responsiveness etc.
you may ask - well, how often do you take your 3 series or tlx to a mountain road? if you live in most parts of the usa, you don't. in that case the tlx really is a wiser choice overall. for most people, more than 99% of driving is daily commuting.
my point is, you simply cannot say that 3 series is dull by not even bringing it to its limit. every well insulated modern car is boring in that case, but some remain boring beyond that as well.

I have a 2021 TLX ASpec. I love the interior. All the features it has is incredible for the price!. the real leather, ventilated seats, navigation, and more is a better value over the germans.
I've also owned a 2017 BMW 530i, it didn't have half the features or even the power this TLX has.
When comparing a daily, the TLX hands down is the best value....at least for me.
Plus the ELS sound system is one of the best i've heard way better then the mark levinson in Lexus.
I am also a sucker for Acuras Jewel eye LED headlights. SUPER bright at night.
    Thats just me two cents....

I really appreciate this review and I was pulling my hair out at other channels bemoaning and complaining that this wasn't the enthusiast car they wanted it to be.
It appears to me that Honda went with a "safe bet" by not making it too sporty or not making it too soft/luxury. Goose's take brought realism to the review and he kept saying "the average driver" which is lost on a lot of people - there is a lot of bang for the buck here on the TLX, and Honda at least is doing a great job of kitting out their trims compared to what someone would get for equally priced German cars.
I think car reviewers get too lost in the enthusiast space between going to track days and reading the comments of people who actually watch car channels; the TH-cam community (reviewers and commenters) forget that we're a niche market of a niche market. The world according to the TH-cam Car Community has no fake-engine noise, manual transmissions, RWD or Rear-biased AWD, and twin turbo V6s.
98% of the comments I read and 50% of the videos I watch forget just who is actually buying cars and what consumers look for, because - again, as Goose said - they consume so much information and drive in so many cars that they forget the avg consumer isn't going to notice minutia like they will.
In looking for a midsize SUV, my GF test drove the CRV, Santa Fe, Forester, and the Outback. All of those stopped existing to her once she finally drove a CX-5. There are probably think pieces on why any of those cars is better than the CX-5 but at the end of the day, that one was the best car FOR HER.
Reviewers are stuck on comparing this to BMWs and Audis, but I think that A) ppl who have it in their heads that they're buying a RWD sport luxury car or ppl that "only buy German", aren't the target market for this car; and B) people that do cross shop will find a lot to love in *how* this car drives and what comes with the pricetag compared to the competition.

People buy cars today comparing specs/price and brand loyalty. The 4 cil TLX will be compared with entry level BMW, MB and Audi's. At that level, the Acura engine is really good, more power and torque than competition and interior has real materials as opposed to all the plastic you get in the Germans. I have an RDX A Spec and my dad has an entry level MB GLB and I fell downgraded when I sit in the MBs plastic, plain, almost utilitarian look. Never mind the driving and the stereo, where Acura wins by a large margin. But from outside, it has a MB badge, mine is an Acura. But objectively, for the same money, Acura is far more satisfying in every respect. What Acura was lacking is a sports trim that competes with the AMG, M series, and with the Type S it will be a great fight and I can't wait for the reviews

    • @MrTresto
      @MrTresto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ha ha ha, agreed, their grill is amazing, a perfect balance of being big enough to not be a tiny strip, but still looking good, not a giant electric razor like Lexus (they have the WORSE grills), or the newer BMWs (even worse, it's like they have a tumor or something), and I'm not even gonna talk about the last Toyota Avalon or the newer Audis, Fords, etc...
Anyway, I have a 2018 TLX and it looks REALLY GOOD from the front. Actually the 2018 TLX profile and rear kinda look like a Camry with bigger wheels (which is a LOT better that the camry), and the front end looks great too. My only real complaint about the car is its (VERY) sluggish transmission, which coupled with a v6 that has not much torque under 2500rpm (but is wonderful over that), means you always have a delay unless you're in sport+ mode which basically keeps the engine over 3000rpm cruising around. I heard the 2021 is better in that regard... Might upgrade in a couple years.
Also, I wouldn't mind the trunk being a sedan shaped hatchback opening, like a Tesla model S, because that means the big cooler that I use for groceries would be able to fit in the trunk without having to angle it first (which I'm not doing if it's full of groceries). Therefore I have to put it either on the back seat and put a seal belt to keep it in place, or, easier solution, use my wife's car, which IS a hatchback (but nowhere near as nice to drive around, it's a 2009 Prius).
But that's ok, I can deal with it. The only real complaint is the transmission. Apart from that it's a really pleasant car to drive, with enough power to be more sporty if I wish so, but more of a smooth luxury car if I keep it out of sport mode. The AWD is fantastic too, gets me around snow etc easily. Very good value car, very reliable and comfortable. I've also pulled off 32mpg of real life consumption on a trip from Boston to NYC, while driving pretty normally too, not particularly slow.

I’m a guy that is looking at this car for the spring, specifically the Type-S. I love the guys at The Straight Pipes, but they missed the mark on this review where I believe you nailed it. The performance will come with the Type-S, but the whole package, including the infotainment, which isn’t nearly as bad as they said (deal breaker??), is pretty much perfect. Another point you hit on the head is about the cross shopping with the Germans. If I wanted over-priced, over hyped, fall apart after (and sometimes during) warranty, then I would look at the Germans, butI’m not cross shopping them. Great dynamics, one of the best sound systems in the business, long term reliability (why look under the hood...lol), and likely great resale, the TLX has it.
