2021 Acura TLX | Review & Road Test

  • For the latest Acura TLX pricing and information:
    www.kbb.com/acura/tlx/
The latest TLX is not showy. Instead, it has a tasteful shape with just enough visual interest to looks special.
More than that, the low, wide stance implies sporty potential.
And I’m pleased to announce that the implication is true.
The TLX has a spirited side waiting to be unlocked. From a power perspective, the base turbocharged 2-liter engine has plenty of hutzpah (272hp, 280 lb-ft). Choose the Type S and the numbers look even better (355hp, 354 lb-ft). But power is only part of the equation.
What really works for me is how the TLX steers. The ratio feels slow on-center but the further you turn the wheel, the quicker it steers.
The result is a car that’s both stable and playful. Ride quality is also outstanding, especially on our Advance model test car with its adaptive dampers.
Meanwhile, the 10-speed automatic transmission does a fine job delivering smooth shifts while responding quickly to driver inputs. If I have a dynamic complaint it’s the brake pedal.
I like the firm feel but changes in pressure don’t lead to fully predictable changes in deceleration.
Unlike many of its rear-drive luxury car competitors, the TLX comes standard with front-wheel drive. However, Acura’s super handling all-wheel drive is available for $2,000. The system can send up to 70% of the engine's power to the rear tires and 100% of that power to either rear tire.
By overdriving the outside rear tire Super Handling all-wheel drive can help rotate the car in corners. And where cars are concerned, rotation often equals fun.
And if you’re curious, here are some fuel economy numbers. (FWD 22city/31hwy) (AWD 21city/29hwy)
A base 2021 Acura TLX runs about $38,500 including destination charges. That’s a big jump versus the previous TLX but it is a much better car and that sum includes a moonroof, heated power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless access with pushbutton start, LED lighting, various drive modes, and a largely inoffensive automatic engine start-stop system that saves fuel when stopped.
Also standard is Acurawatch, a suite of safety and convenience tech.
And now, let’s take a moment to appreciate the TLX’s cabin, which channels elements from Acura’s NSX supercar. The center stack and hooded gauge cluster arrangement jump out first.
But it’s the NSX-style steering wheel I love the most. The ergonomics when held in the correct 9 & 3 positions are outstanding.
Elsewhere the interior matches the exterior’s understated initial impression but, the more time you spend inside, the more the TLX charms. It also feels more luxurious than the previous TLX.
I’ll also praise the front seats. They’re firm and supportive but with a pleasing layer of cushiness on top.
Trunk space lands at a middling 13.5 cu-ft, though a wide passthrough and easy-to-drop rear seats make it easy to carry larger loads.
Glance at the instrument panel and you’ll find super intuitive climate and seat controls. You might also recall that Acura’s previous 2-screen solution infotainment solution is gone. Now there’s a single 10.2-inch screen controlled by Acura’s True Touchpad Interface.
In simplest terms, where you touch on the pad correlates with what is highlighted on the screen. Upper right, upper right.
If you’ve used competitive cursor-style touchpads, this will take some getting used to. Especially since that True Touchpad philosophy doesn’t apply to Apple CarPlay, which you navigate like a traditional cursor. Just know, if this seems odd at first, time will help. Plus, it’s got this beefy hand rest for comfortable inputs. Another TLX ergonomic win! Oh, and one weird observation. The system’s page swap sound reminds me of a shaker sample from a 1980s Casio keyboard.
If you’d like the fanciest of fancy TLXs, that’ll cost you roughly $50k but you’ll enjoy leather seating, blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree camera system, natural wood trim, heated rear seats, and a 17-speaker ELS audio system that some folks love but, to my ears, sounds just OK.
There’s also an A-Spec package which imparts the TLX with racy vibes inside and out.
Obvious alternatives to the Acura TLX include the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. That Genesis G70 is awfully tempting, what with its slight price advantage and rear-drive chassis. Even so, the TLX has a lot going for it.
Composed road manners, compelling value, strong resale figures, and its new-found spirit of excitement. You know, among luxury cars there are plenty of predictable choices that can help tell the world you’ve “made it”.
The Acura TLX is different. It’s a subtler version of luxury. And the longer I live, the better that sounds.

After 10 years of trying to make it work, Lexus finally threw in the towel and gave the people what they wanted, A TOUCH SCREEN. NO ONE LIKES TOUCHPADS. Acura is now the ONLY lux brand not to offer a touch screen in its cars. The Germans all do it, Volvo does it, Cadillac does it, Lincoln does it, Genesis does it, and now Lexus as well. Acura is the only one to not get that, and think that this mess of a system where you put your finger relative to where you want to be on the screen is a good idea, unless you're using CP or AA in which case it DOESN'T do that, because that would be too sensible. Let's have it work two different ways! What could go wrong!?

  • @20gravedigger11
    @20gravedigger11 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I didn't need to own/lease this car to know very quickly what I would be in for in the long haul:
The steering is ridiculously sharp and responsive (especially on the SH-AWD), the powertrain delivers quick and strong acceleration, the driving position is good, and the craftsmanship is far superior to the 1st-Gen TLX.
However, and a BIG HOWEVER, for a (now) Acura flagship sports sedan, the ride is unbearable (at least on the TLX Tech Package without the Adaptive Dampers that come only on Advance Package models). On New England city roads, the new TLX rode so stiff, I thought I was in my colleagues Ford Mustang (minus the refinement)... that's how rough the ride was. Having lease a 1st-Gen TLX, and know how refined (albeit, less sporty) the ride was, Acura hit no middle-ground here.
In comparison, I drove an Audi A5 Sportback prior to the new TLX and that was the kind of ride-quality I was expecting out of this new TLX: tight but with some dampening, and certainly never jarring. Considering how much bigger the TLX is compared to the A5 (it's closer to the A7 in dimensions), I'm amazed at how much worse the ride was.
Another side note: the road noise from the tires was also very intrusive.
I'm highly disappointed, as I had an amazing lease deal on the table and I just couldn't pull the trigger. It was a car I wanted to love and I couldn't.
PLEASE... if you're considering it, make sure your test drive isn't just on freshly-paved highways... request a back-road route as well!

Yet, you get none of that benefit with FWD, so your're back to equal footing as what an Accord 2.0t offers. Plus, for the consumer the problem is that the dealer lot has 18 of the FWD cars and only 2 AWD cars so your ability to wheel and deal on the AWD is nill at best.

Hello everyone! So i have some bad news for everyone that has a TLX, ILX and RDX. Not sure about the MDX but i am 100 percent sure almost all if not all of these models Re leaking from rear main seal! My new 19 ILX did and now my new 21 TLX does. Also had an RDX for a month it suffered from same problem this is not a coincidence. But... guess what heres the sad and toxic part. All of these cars had a slight smell coming through vents. Mostly when fan is on without AC. When motor is started and idling,etc.... get check asap. Look for small amounts of oil near fly wheel cover. And if youve been smelling oil fumes your not going crazy. The first vehicle this happened on was my new 19 ILX from the start, new. I had it upto 16,000km. Brought in for warranty rear main seal. They have to take tranny out to do. And change motor oil. Well... i got home the head mechanic didnt tighten motor oil drain plug! Oil all over lol. I do all of my own maintenence so this broke my heart, and if this wasnt bad enough. Then wife driving it home from work. Massive transmission failure she lost power when driving home from work. They put transmission in wrong. Traded it in for new 21 TLX. Exact same problem. :( pretty sad. What happens next we will see. This is real. Check it out everyone now. That being said if this wasnt a problem i would love the car. These are toxic fumes though. Your welcome. Please let me know what you find.

Honda builds the best engines. I've driven a Honda or Acura since 1980. That said, a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine putting out 272 or 345 HP is going to end up on the floor of your garage or some repair shop within 75k miles, less if you don't maintain it. Honda and Acura can do far better for engines, but they do not do so for CAFE reasons. Anyone who buys one of these babies should treat it like a Mini-Cooper: drive it for 75K, then dump it before it comes apart. Two years ago, I looked at an RDX, then waited to loose the 2.0 liter clockwork engine in favor of a Passport with the well proven V-6 drive train: Advantage Honda!

Almost perfect, but it wouldn't be a modern Honda/Acura without some odd quirks. Please replace that annoying push-button gear selector with a real gear shift lever.... this supposed to be a sports sedan, not a luxury cruiser. Also, ditch that odd, cumbersome touch-pad selector. Just redesign the entire center console.

Acura knocked the interior out of the park. The exterior though? Not so much. Despite the long hood, the TLX still looks obviously FWD thanks to it long overhangs. Why Acura decided to spend millions on a FWD platform is beyond me. They might as well had used the Honda Accord’s platform. I would take it over a Q50. But not over an IS, 3 Series, A4, or C Classe.

Norm T it shares a lot parts with, just like the CT4 shares a lot of parts via the GM parts bin which is why many people don’t buy the CT4, it never feels like you’re sitting in a 45k car, more like a 30k car.

@@Fadic4 the ATS have always been a $28-30K car with discounting. I had a 2013 ATS4 2.0T that I picked up used and had about 90,000 miles when I ecu tuned it to 390 lb-ft of torque on 92-93 octane. It was quite a hoot to drive. Before that I had a XTS VSport 3.6TT that had 43K and also had it ecu tuned to almost 600 lb-ft that would spin the tires at 50 mph!
They might have had a window switch or turn stalk that was shared and that was it.

      ● The system is confusing to use even when the RDX is parked, and it’s very distracting for drivers when the car is moving. For example, they’re forced to look at the screen to execute common audio tasks, and some adjustments are buried deep in submenus. We think it requires too much concentration, multiple steps and extended time with eyes off the road and hand off the wheel. It’s one of the worst systems that we’ve encountered recently.
●Braking performance is strong but the brake pedal has a spongy feel. The suspension quashes most bumps, but we found the ride to be rather firm and choppy. The cabin is quiet, barring a somewhat grainy engine noise.
●We got 22 mpg overall in our tests, which is average for the category, and no better than what we measured with the V6 in the previous-generation RDX. This figure also trails the performance from competitors’ small turbo engines, such as Audi, BMW, and Lexus.
●posting 52 mph through the course. Acura makes a big deal about its Super Handling AWD, which only comes into play when drivers accelerate through a corner.
●Most bumps are absorbed well, but the RDX has a jittery feel over rougher roads and on long drives.
●Most of the time the cabin is very quiet, but a coarse engine hum punches through under acceleration. It’s acceptable when driving aggressively, but annoying in everyday driving
●The brake pedal feels as if it isn’t responding at first, and it requires a bit of effort, which can make the driver feel less-than-confident.
●Although it’s nicely finished, the materials and build quality don’t quite match the best SUVs in this class. For example, the storage cubbies aren’t lined, there were some uneven panel gaps on the center console, and one of the dash vents didn’t move as freely as the others. Finally, there are plenty of soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin, but the material on the upper dash and window sill is quite thin.
●The RDX’s controls are among the worst we’ve experienced. There is a steep learning curve to use the infotainment system, but it is still distracting and confusing to execute common audio functions even after drivers have some familiarity. The system is slow to load after the initial start up.
